Industrial implementation of the ammonia synthesis -- How does it work?

In September 1913, the first industrial-scale ammonia production plant came on stream at BASF in Ludwigshafen. The Haber-Bosch process for ammonia synthesis, which was first successfully operated at BASF Ludwigshafen in September 1913, was the decisive step into the age of mineral fertilizers. This innovation became a key driver in the development of the industrialized society and is still securing the nutrition of billions of people today. The foundations for the "Synthesis of ammonia from its elements" were laid by Professor Fritz Haber from 1904 onwards with his work at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The industrial upscaling of ammonia synthesis entrusted by BASF to Carl Bosch in 1909, however, initially raised unforeseen problems. Because the high-pressure process required pressures and temperatures considerably exceeding those that had so far been technically possible. The first plants couldn't stand the strain and its steel reactors burst. Bosch the chemist, who was experienced in metallurgy, closely studied the metals that had been used and finally identified the cause: the hot, highly pressurized hydrogen was taking the carbon essential for strength out of the steel walls, making them soft and simultaneously brittle. Bosch overcame this challenge by fitting the inside of the apparatus with a thin lining of low-carbon soft iron and drilling holes in the pressure bearing steel wall. This allowed the hydrogen that had penetrated into the material to escape without causing damage. This innovative high pressure technology required further components that were not available anywhere, and had to be designed and tested within the company. BASF established the chemical industry's first material testing facility for this purpose in 1912. The reactor of the newer ammonia production plant in which the synthesis gas mixture reacts over a catalyst bed at above 400 degrees Celsius and more than 150 bar pressure to produce ammonia, has a 15 centimeter thick wall of high-strength steel. Its advanced alloy resists the pressurized hydrogen, making the legendary casing unnecessary today. The raw material used to generate the synthesis gas is also different today: in the first few decades of the Haber-Bosch process, a large number of employees prepared a bed of glowing coke and passed steam over it. Today, ammonia plants use natural gas as a feedstock and energy source, which also makes up the lion's share of the production costs. At Ludwigshafen site, the ammonia production is the second largest natural gas consumer after the company's own power generating plants. As in the early days, the necessary nitrogen is obtained from the air supply and, for a change, costs nothing at all. Dazwischen befinden sich eine positive Elektrode, die Kathode sowie eine negative Elektrode, die Anode. Die Kathode besteht aus einem Lithiummetalloxyd, die Anode ist eine Grafitschicht. Damit die Li-Ionen in der Zelle wandern können, ist die Zelle mit einem Elektrolyt gefüllt. Das Elektrolyt der Batterie muss extrem rein sein. Three-way catalytic converter - how does it work?

The widespread introduction of such catalytic converter systems in North America (starting in 1976) and Europe (1986) resulted in a marked decrease in metropolitan air pollution from harmful tailpipe emissions despite a growing population of vehicles. The development of the first three-way catalytic converter in 1979/80 marks a milestone in exhaust gas technology. This device was able to catalyze the conversion of the three main pollutants (unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides) simultaneously. As a general principle, a catalyst allows chemical conversions to desired products to occur more rapidly and at lower temperatures. For this reason, in addition to pollution control, industrial catalysts find use in a wide field, be it the processing of petroleum to produce transportation fuels or the production of chemicals including polymers and pharmaceuticals. Ideally, the catalyst itself is not chemically consumed during this process. Automotive emissions catalytic converters consist of special combinations of precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium dispersed on high surface area carriers which in turn are coated onto the walls of ceramic or metallic monolithic structures. In the modern three-way catalytic converter, uncombusted fuel residues are oxidized with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water, nitrogen oxides are converted to ubiquitous nitrogen, and toxic carbon monoxide is oxidized with oxygen to carbon dioxide. Like this, a typical catalytic converter is capable of destroying around 98 percent of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides produced by the car's engine. Durch die Einführung von Katalysatorensystemen in Nordamerika (1976) und Europa (1986) nahm die Belastung der Innenstädte durch schädliche Autoabgase trotz steigender Autozahlen deutlich ab. Mit der Entwicklung des ersten Dreiwegekatalysators, der den Abbau der drei wichtigsten Schadstoffgruppen (unverbrannte Kohlenwasserstoffe, Kohlenmonoxid und Stickoxide) gleichzeitig katalysieren kann, gelang 1979/80 ein Meilenstein der Abgastechnologie. Das Prinzip eines Katalysators ist einfach: Indem er die Reaktionspartner zusammenbringt, beschleunigt er chemische Umwandlungen, die sonst nur durch die Zufuhr einer wesentlich höheren Aktivierungsenergie in Gang gebracht werden können. Der Katalysator selbst verbraucht sich dabei im Idealfall nicht. Im Autoabgaskatalysator sind es spezielle Mischungen aus Edelmetallen wie Platin, Palladium und Rhodium, die die Umwandlung der Schadstoffe beschleunigen. Sie bilden eine dünne katalytische Schicht auf einem Trägermaterial mit extrem großer Oberfläche, das wiederum auf eine meist wabenförmige Keramikstruktur aufgebracht ist. Im modernen Dreiwegekatalysator lassen sich mit ihrer Hilfe unverbrannte Treibstoffreste mit Sauerstoff zu Kohlendioxid und Wasser verbrennen, Stickoxide zum allgegenwärtigen Stickstoff umwandeln und giftiges Kohlenmonoxid mit Sauerstoff zu Kohlendioxid oxidieren. The film looks at biogas and its role as a major energy mix resource. In about four minutes, the film describes the increasing importance of biogas and BASF's contribution to making its use more efficient. BASF customer Verbio AG, Germany's leading biofuel manufacturer headquartered in Leipzig, Saxony, serves as an example. Biogas is obtained by fermenting the most diverse substrates such as domestic waste, plants or sewage sludge. Depending on the starting material, the gas mix this generates contains only 50 to 70 percent of useful methane. The rest is made up by associated gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which may cause severe corrosion. So the gas must be purified before it can be fed to the natural gas grid. BASF offers a new gas treatment process for this, which Verbio is using sucessfully. Many millions of square meters of flat roof are not yet green – this means wasting an enormous potential of living space. Flat roof systems consist of a supporting structure and several functional layers. Almost all these systems require an insulation layer. It warms in winter, cools in summer, saves energy, and reduces CO2 emissions. The classical layer structure of an insulated flat roof is shown in the video, together with the options and benefits of a heat insulation with the insulation material Neopor®. In 1997, BASF had presented this product, a further development of the classical insulation material Styropor®. Neopor contains small infrared absorbers and thus ensures that even more heat stays inside the building in winter. This film explains the principle of the lithium-ion battery: The battery is enclosed in an aluminum and copper layer. In between are a positive electrode, the cathode, and a negative electrode, the anode. The cathode consists of a lithium metal oxide, the anode is a graphite layer. In order for the Li ions to migrate into the cell, the cell is filled with an electrolyte. The electrolyte of the battery must be extremely clean. Cathode and anode in the battery are split by a separator, which is permeable to the Lithium-ion. In addition, the process of charging and discharging is displayed. Organic waste for compost -- whether food scraps, peels, coffee grounds -- can be found in every kitchen. This organic waste can be treated in a composting facility and turned into nutrient-rich compost. A simple contribution to the environment -- if the consumers fulfill their part. A new development by BASF helps by collectiing organic waste in bags, that are suitable for the compost: the compostable plastic Ecovio ® FS. The bags for the compost are made with Ecoflex and polylactic acid, a natural substance made from corn starch. The trash bags are strong and tear-resistant -- even with wet content. In an industrial composting facility with controlled conditions, the material and the organic waste will be transformed into water, carbon dioxide and biomass by microorganisms. Environmentally friendly deicing of runways and roads with Formic Acid - Ice-free through the winter

Ice-free through the winter: There are hardly any limits to the use of formic acid. The acid has a history of successful use in numerous applications over several decades. In animal nutrition it preserves feeds, it is used in leather and textile manufacture and is a constituent of oilfield chemicals. European airports are also among the users. They have been using the salts of formic acid for more than ten years to deice their landing strips and taxiways. The salts, also known as formates, make sure that water doesn't freeze at zero degrees Celsius as it usually does. Depending on the concentration of the deicing agent, the freezing point is reduced to as much as minus 50 degrees Celsius and is then much lower than the outdoor temperature. In this way, formates rapidly remove thin layers of ice and effectively prevent new snow from sticking to the landing strip or a new layer of ice from forming. Formates are also very eco-friendly. If the salts of formic acid enter the airport waste water treatment plant together with the melt water, their waste water polluting effect is much less than that of other deicing agents because of their good biodegradability and low oxygen demand during the breakdown process. Novel method for distance measurement: Focus-Induced Photoresponse (FIP) developed by trinamiX

Focus-Induced Photoresponse (FIP) is a novel approach to measure distances. Its working principle is fundamentally different from established techniques to acquire depth information, such as time-of-flight, triangulation, stereo vision or image processing based methods. FIP takes advantage of a specific phenomenon in photodetector devices: the irradiance-dependent photoresponse. The photoresponse of these devices depends not only on the amount of light incident, but also on the size of the light spot on the detector. We call this the “FIP effect” and we use it to measure distance measurements. The main components of the system are a modulated LED as light source, a camera lens, and two FIP photodetectors. The sensor output is impacted by the irradiance on the sensor i.e. how well the light is focused, and by the total amount of light collected by the lens. By forming the quotient of the signals of two detectors, the dependence on total light as well as fluctuations in the output of the light source cancel out. Due to the FIP effect, the quotient changes with the distance, yielding a unique signature for each LED position. A calibration curve is created that assigns an unambiguous quotient signal to each distance. Hence, the FIP technique does not require computationally intensive algorithms. FIP is very versatile and the FIP effect can be observed in various materials like DSSC, silicon, lead sulfide and more. This enables us to provide depth sensing from the UV to the infrared range. FIP has been developed and patented by trinamiX – pioneer in adaptive 3D sensing. Precast concrete elements for Vienna’s Allianz Stadium

The new Allianz stadion in Vienna is to be ready for the 2016/17 season and is to offer space for more than 24,000 spectators. Concrete admixtures from Master Builders Solutions were used for the pre-fabricated concrete components of the nine kilometers of grandstands. This project called for a self-compacting concrete with high segregation resistance. For this reason, the experts from Applications Technology optimized the concrete formulation with MasterGlenium ACE 430. This concrete admixture promotes the fine dispersion of the cement and is therefore suitable for the production of self-compacting concrete. Appearance was a key factor for the construction of the grandstands. The exposed concrete surfaces were to be free from air inclusions and pores and to show uniform coloring. These objectives were achieved thanks to the use of MasterFinish DF 370. During concrete mixing and placing, this product functions as a “de-aerator”, preventing air bubbles forming on the shuttered concrete surfaces. Liquid crystal displays, better known by the abbreviation LCDs, are everywhere: in TVs, laptops, smartphones or navigation systems. The images on a liquid crystal display with the standard resolution are made up of about two million picture elements, better known as pixels. The color filter pigments attached to the liquid crystal cells are what give each pixel its color. Every pixel contains the three primary colors red, green and blue. The colors are composed of tiny crystals about a thousand times smaller in diameter than a human hair. The crystals act as a filter for the white backlight and only allow light waves from a selected range of the visible spectrum to pass through. These light waves show one of the three colors in its purest possible form. The basic principle is simple. When the color red appears on the screen, the corresponding subpixel lets the red portion of light pass through and absorbs the rest. The other two subpixels – for blue and green – are deactivated when this happens. If, on the other hand, light penetrates through the red and green subpixel while the blue is deactivated, the colors combine to give a rich yellow. Fine-tuning the portions of the three primary colors in this manner produces millions of hues.
