The reason behind this is that the urethra is located close to the anus and bacteria such as E.coli, which is present in the large intestine, can escape from the anus and enter the urethra. From here, they can reach the bladder, causing bladder infection. The infection should be treated as soon as possible otherwise there is a possibility of the kidneys getting infected. Post menopause, there are changes in the normal bacteria which reside in the vagina. This can increase the incidence chances of urinary tract infections(UTIs). UTIs can also happen due to use of a catheter (a tube inserted into the bladder to allow draining urine into a bag when someone cannot urinate normally) which makes it easy for bacteria to enter the bladder.
