I like to think of the baby as ‘snug as a bug in a rug,’ and I used to tell my son this every time I’d swaddle him snugly. 2. Dream feed. The dream feed is the feeding given to the baby right before you go to bed, and it helps prevent the baby from waking up just after we moms finally drift off to sleep. Isn’t this the pinnacle of sleep deprivation? You just fall asleep and the baby wakes up. The dream feed can really help your newborn baby sleep for longer while you sleep. We used it until about age 4 months. 3. Limit the length of naps during the day. I know it’s hard to wake a sleeping baby, but sleeping too long of a stretch during the day can rob nighttime sleep. If the baby sleeps past the 2 – 2.5-hour mark, I would go ahead and wake the baby up, feed him, keep him awake for a bit, and then lay him down for another nap. If you feel the baby truly needs longer naps, feel free to increase the nap limit to 2.5 hours. Breaking up sleep during the day will help your newborn baby sleep better at night. 4. Use white noise. No one wants to miss a party, so if your baby is listening to all the fun going on in the house it can be hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. I place a fan on medium in the baby’s room rather than directly next to the baby, so it does not blow directly on him or sit too close to his sensitive ears. Using white noise also helps immensely when we are traveling! We are usually able to avoid asking friends or family to be quiet 🙂. 5. Use a pre-snap and bedtime routines. A bedtime routine would typically be a little longer and may include a bath, a massage, reading a story, offering a feeding, placing the baby in a wearable blanket or swaddle, turning on the white noise, a few cuddles, and saying your sleepy words. Following the same exact routine as consistently as possible cues the baby for sleep, and over time the baby will learn that sleep immediately follows the nap and bedtime routines. Combine vitamin E oil of 2 capsules and 1 teaspoon of fresh aloe vera gel or juice. Using fingertips, gently massage the mixture onto the affected areas in circular motions for few minutes. Leave it on for about half an hour. Wash off with lukewarm water and pat the skin dry. Repeat on a daily basis. 3. Vitamin E Oil, Honey, Yogurt and Lemon Juice. Honey helps to hydrate the skin and protects it from damaging toxins. Yogurt improves the elasticity and moisture content of treated skin. Lemon juice works towards tightening pores, bleaching age spots and preventing wrinkles. Extract the oil from 3 Vitamin E capsules. In a bowl, add ½ teaspoon honey, ½ teaspoon lemon juice, 2 teaspoons yogurt and vitamin E oil. Stir well and apply it on the face using your fingertips. Allow it to stay on for about 20 minutes. Use lukewarm water to wash it off and pat skin dry. Follow this process every day. 4. Vitamin E Oil and Coconut Oil. Coconut oil is very rich in essential fats, nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants. It helps to prevent early signs of wrinkles and skin aging. Squeeze the oil out of 1 Vitamin E capsule. Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to it. Gently massage the mixture onto the affected area. There is very little reliable human data, but some very interesting animal data, as recently reviewed. There are many potential benefits. While I tend to focus on weight loss and type 2 diabetes, there are many other benefits, including autophagy (a cellular cleansing process), lipolysis (fat burning), anti-aging effects and anti-seizure effects. From an evolutionary standpoint, we can look at other mammals for some clues. In many mammals, the body responds to severe caloric deprivation with a reduction in the size of all organs with two prominent exceptions – the brain and the male testicles. This suggests that cognitive function is highly preserved. This makes quite a lot of sense from an evolutionary standpoint. Suppose you had some trouble finding food. If your brain started to slow down, well, the mental fog would make it that much harder to find food. Our brainpower, one of the main advantages we have in the natural world, would be squandered. No, the brain maintains or even boosts its abilities. In stories of Japanese prisoners of war in World War II (Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand), many have described the amazing clarity of thought that often accompanies starvation. In humans, the benefits to the brain can be found both during fasting and during caloric restriction (CR). During exercise and CR, there is increased synaptic and electrical activity in the brain. In a study of 50 normal elderly subjects, memory test improved significantly with 3 months of CR (30% reduction in calories). Neurogenesis is the process where neural stem cells differentiate into neurons that are able to grow and form synapses with other neurons. Both exercise and CR seem to increase neurogenesis via pathways including BDNF. Even more, interestingly, the level of fasting insulin seems to have a direct inverse correlation to memory as well.
