IFPMA: Biotherapeutic medicines explained

03:53
This IFPMA video illustrates what biotherapeutics are all about. They are typically derived from living organisms and are made by genetically engineering DNA. A high level of precision is required in the commercial manufacturing process to produce a consistent product each time. Every step we take in the production of these medicines requires highly controlled testing to ensure consistent quality, safety, and efficacy. A must watch.

Watch Out for False Friends (full version)

03:40
Every day, fake medicines find their way into online and physical pharmacies, hospitals, and street markets. This plague knows no borders. In the best case scenario, fake medicines leave patients with no side-effects but also without a cure. In many other cases, however, they can kill people. We have to get smarter than the criminals to put a stop to this silent public health threat. This video stars a genuine pill who explains the danger of fake medicines and their impact on our societies. Patients, nurses, doctors, pharmacists, carers, regulators, and policy makers need to be on the lookout, and everybody needs to better understand the danger of fake medicines and how to stay safe. Please help us raise awareness on fake medicines by sharing this video, tweeting it, talking about it, and showing it to the people that you care about... and tell us what you think about it. Dr Joan Awunyo-Akaba: Representative of the civil society on the GAVI Alliance Board Immunization: The Missed Opportunity In this interview, Dr Joan Awunyo-Akaba, Gavi Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Board Member gives her take on what “Immunization – the Missed Opportunity” is all about. She puts a special emphasis on how to reach that fifth child that is still not receiving the direly need immunization shots. By addressing immunization challenges, the international community can reduce the burden of vaccine-preventable diseases that affects the future of those children, sustain healthy communities, and reduce health disparities both within and across countries. Bio: Dr Awunyo-Akaba has a PhD in medical sociology from the University of Ghana Legon (2007). She is a community health development consultant; Founder and Executive Director of Future Generations International (FUGI), a Ghanaian based NGO on health promotion and development; and an expert in childhood immunisation advocacy; behaviour change communication; and water, sanitation, and hygiene. A registered nurse, she is involved in civil society organisational activities, and is currently the National Vice Chairperson of the Ghana Coalition of NGOs in Health. Joan also represents the national Health Coalition on the Ghana Health Services’ Gavi Consortium that assesses the eligibility and involvement of CSOs in immunisation and health systems strengthening; and is presently advocating for the establishment of a National Innovative Fund for Childhood Immunization that would ensure the sustainability of the EPI in Ghana when Gavi support ends.

Launch of the African Global Health Leaders Fellowship at the Graduate Institute in Geneva

02:19
Sub-Saharan African countries have sustained unprecedented transformation and change in the last decade, including constant economic growth, a growing middle class, increased political stability, and a skilled workforce. Recognition must be given to these advances, even though challenges remain: Africa’s population is expected to constitute 25% of the global population in 2050 (16% in 2017) with a sharp increase in the youth population under 25. This will also put health systems increasingly under pressure. This event brings together emerging leaders from Ghana and Nigeria to discuss the achievements and challenges across the continent by raising some of the following questions: What are the most promising approaches for efficient healthcare systems in Africa? What are the challenges to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC)? How can health policy-making skills be strengthened in the region to meet the needs of the future? What are politically and economically feasible solutions to improve health security and sustain healthier societies? How can investment in education for health be fostered and African leaders supported so that they can effectively shape and tailor public health policies? These questions and more are precisely what the Global Health Centre at the Graduate Institute, the Centre on Global Health Security at Chatham House, and the IFPMA had in mind to invite you to discuss.
