Feeding Baby Pit Vipers: T. venustus
Due to the small size of these snakes, it' very important to get some food in them as soon as possible, after their first shed. Some feed on their own, others need a little help getting started. I don't push the food all the way as their neck is very fragile and I don't want to risk hurting them. Saw Scaled Viper
A bad tempered E. c. sochureki, showing why they're one of the deadliest snakes on earth. The noise they make is caused by rubbing their heavily keeled scales together (stridulation), and is an attempt to scare off predators, and to warn other animals of the presence. Ignore the warning signs and they won't hesitate to bite defensively, often injecting a lethal dose of their incredibly toxic venom. Leave them alone and they'll leave you alone.

Baby Cobra. Only a day old
One of the hatchling N. siamensis from this years breeding. The snake in this video is only a day old but still fully capable of delivering a life threatening envenomation. They can 'spit' at this age too, but their small size means they have a low yield and lack the power to spit long distances. Eye protection is a must with all species of spitting cobras.

Spitting Cobra: Eye cap removal
A good grip is essential when restraining any venomous snake. Just as I go to remove the eye cap, the snake opens it's mouth and lunges forward, squirting venom at my hand. In the video, it look a lot closer than actually was, but my hand did get a little wet. SEE THE SLOW MOTION VIDEO HERE https://youtu.be/-dU57fG0EPI

Rattlesnake Bite. VERY GRAPHIC
The bite I received from one of my western diamondback rattlesnakes (C. atrox), as I administering oral medication. I was holding the snakes head in my left hand, when my grip became a little awkward. This is when I made the mistake of trying to alter my grip, rather than releasing the snake and starting again. As I shuffled my fingers back into position, the snake managed to twist its head, sinking both fangs into my middle finger. Do not underestimate a rattlesnake. They're not aggressive animals, but if they feel threatened, they will defend themselves. If you have any contact with these amazing animals, never forget their will to survive rivals that your own. In the mind of a snake, we are a giant mammal trying to eat them.

Cobra handling
This method of pinning isn't the safest method there is, but if done correctly, it's a lot less stressful to the snake, making it easier and quicker to get the snake feeding I do NOT recommend this method, it's just one of many I use, so please don't try it yourself unless its something you already do. Here is a link to a video with a safer method of pinning http://youtu.be/Z-rBwyrFyb0

Handling a Cobra Safely.
Restraining a venomous snake is one of the most dangerous parts of working with them. The method shown in this is a little more time consuming than the conventional methods, but in my opinion; it's probably the safest of them all. REMEMBER. Watching videos is good research, but there is no substitute to learning from an experienced handler. Be safe and get a mentor.

Removing the eggs from the adult female N. siamensis went a lot better than I expected. I was ready for the snake going mental (hence the reason for staying well back) but she behaved pretty well. Poor girl was still tired after her good work.

Tubing Rattlesnakes
I've recently started using tubes for my venomous snakes. I found it quite tricky at first, but after a little practice, I think I've started to get the hang of it. The one thing I did notice on this video, is on the final 'tubing', I may have put my hands on the snake a little early. It didn't feel that way as I was doing it, but after seeing this video, it does appear a little soon.

Assist Feeding Tree Viper - Trimeresurus venustus
These snakes can be a real pain to get feeding. The young often, but not always, need to be assist fed before they take food themselves. A bit from these are rarely fatal, especially at this size, but they will still cause a lot of damage, so the safest method of assist feeding them is to use a sponge to hold them down and some tweezers to pop the food into their mouth . It's important to make sure you avoid the breathing pipe. A bit of food down there could easily choke the snake. . . Please do NOT try this at home unless you know exactly what you are doing. A procedure like this is for experienced keepers only! . . . .YES you CAN hear children in the background, they're NOT in the room as me or the snakes. The door is LOCKED and they cannot get in.

Sodium hydroxide and aluminum reaction
I added half a tea spoon of sodium hydroxide to a little water, then added the tin foil. The reaction creates a lot of heat, and gives off flamable hydrogen gas. If you look closely, you can see a flame when I light the gas. The reaction in this video, is the same reaction you would see in a 'works bomb'. Only difference is this one was not done in an enclosed space.

Rattlesnakes are defensive, not aggressive
Are rattlesnakes aggressive animals? As you can see, this video clearly demonstrates that rattlesnakes will go a long way to avoid conflict. At first, it tries to scare me away with bluff strikes and a rattling tail. When that doesn't work, it tries to flee. Rattlesnakes need their venom to subdue their prey. The last thing they want to do is waste it something they cannot eat.

Nose horned viper. A lot of people wrongly assume these have similar venom to the V. berus, however that's not the case. These are far more toxic, and contain neurotoxins as well as the usual hemotoxic. It's said to be one of the most venomous snakes in Europe.

Cobra With Nose Rub
This video is a collection of pictures, with dates and notes; showing the progression and healing period of nose rub, on an adult male Indochinese spitting cobra (Naja siamensis). After noticing his nose was getting a little sore, I knew it was from all the digging he's been doing, so I moved him into a tub to give it time to heal. I used newspaper as bedding, a cereal box for a hide and lots of shredded paper. It took 2 months to heal, now he's now back in his vivarium, with a slightly different substrate mixture.

Saw Scaled Viper: A safer way to assist feed dangerous snakes.
This male saw scale viper (E. coloratus) is possibly the most dangerous snake in my collection, due the amount of contact I have with him. Pope's tree viper
This guy came to me as a rescue, and was a little dehydrated. Normally, I'd mist the enclosure a few times a week, and they drink from their scales, the sides of the enclosure and the decorations. When I got him home, I misted him with water, but he came closer and closer to the source, and started drinking directly from the bottle. Very cute, but also very dangerous. .
