Smoking, Drinking and Drug Use among Young People in England 2014

04:30
Since 1982 we've been speaking to young people, aged 11-15, in schools across England about how smoking, drinking and drug use affects their lives. We collect this information to make sure that the government, charities and health professionals make the right decisions about how to help young people. It also shows how things are changing over the years. This short animation shows some of our key findings from last year's study. By watching this animation you'll discover smoking facts, drug information and alcohol statistics relating to young people in England. For those based in other countries like the rest of Europe, the US and elsewhere, the information makes for a really interesting comparison. We'll answer questions like is there really a teenage drinking problem among young people? How aware are young people of the dangers of alcohol and much more. This animation makes interesting watching for healthcare professionals, youth workers, people working in drug and alcohol services, those involved in developing drug, alcohol and tobacco policy, and anyone with a broader interest in substance abuse and society.

This short animation explains how we add information from other data sets to the answers you give us in surveys. This process is sometimes called data linkage. The video explains what adding data is, how the process works and why this is really helpful to researchers. Adding data helps make the information you give us more useful. It can help government, charities and other organisations make better use of your answers.

Why take part in ELSA 50+?

02:01
By 2020 around half the population of England will be over 50. The ELSA project is trying to find out more about the lives of people in this influential age group. ELSA is unique. We are the only major study in England talking to people from 50, right up to 100 years old and beyond, at the same time. That's why we're coming back to the same people every few years, to help us understand in detail how things are changing for people in this age group. It is funded by a number of Government departments including the Department of Health, Department for Transport, the Department for Work and Pensions and the National Institute on Aging in the United States.
