480 Sq. Ft. Tiny Cottage in Los Angeles | Beautiful Small House Design

03:05
This is a 480 square foot tiny cottage in Los Angeles for sale. The property also features a separate garage/storage building. Inside, you’ll find one bedroom, one bathroom, a full kitchen, and a beautiful living area. LOS ANGELES – 05/27/2016 — Tiny houses are the wave of the future. We are seeing them as vacation rentals, in tv shows, subjects of blogs and on Pinterest. Less is more. More is expensive. So when Joanna & Ben hit the Los Angeles housing market to shop for their starter home most of the hip and “up and coming” areas were still out of their price range. Far out. Los Angeles is the land where dreams come true and the American dream of owning a decent sized home in a decent area in Los Angeles could start you at price point of $600,000 or more. “We found the most affordable home in the best area, a place we could entertain, walk and feel safe. Living in 480sq feet we would rather give up the junk in our lives and be able to enjoy our neighborhood more” says Joanna. The couple lived in the tiny house for two and a half years with 3 dogs and as of the summer of 2015, their newborn son. “There was plenty of space, we never felt crammed we do a lot of outdoor living! This is California after all! There was a place for everything we owned and everything in it’s place. Not having a huge mortgage over our head was liberating.” says Ben. The couple has just put the house on the market as their family is growing and evolving. The Humid Forest Of Brazil’s Costa Verde Is The Setting For This Unusual Small House

02:34
The humid forest of Brazil’s Costa Verde is the setting for this unusual small house. Nicknamed “Arca” (“Ark”) by the locals for its resemblance to an overturned vessel, the arched house was built as a getaway by architect Marko Brajovic. He designed it as a place where small groups could go to relax or to work while inspired by nature. Wanting to minimize site disturbance, the architect started with a prefabricated metal building typically used for storage or industrial purposes. This particular building was designed to be assembled by hand, and it took only a week to complete the shell on the concrete pier foundation. As the shell is entirely self-supporting, there are no support columns to impose constraints on the interior layout. In addition, since the end walls are non-structural, the architect could fully glaze both ends with a grid of aluminum-framed windows and sliding doors. To warm up the industrial look, Eucalyptus boards were used for all the interior walls. Two bedrooms and bathroom facilities are partitioned off along the sides of the 72.6 m2 (781 ft2) floor plan. The “roofs” of these side rooms could potentially be used as sleeping lofts as well. The center was left as an open living and work space with a ceiling nearly 5 m (16′) high. When the house is being used for a working retreat, the beds fold up into couches so the bedrooms can become office spaces or breakout rooms. A-frames, arched buildings and similar structures where the roof comes down to the ground on both sides often suffer from a cave or tunnel effect from having large windows on the ends and few if any on the sides. Here the architect avoided that by keeping the end-to-end distance shorter than the width. It would be cheaper to get the same floor area in a shell that is longer and narrower, due to the reduced span, but that wouldn’t make for as livable a home. The building doesn’t appear to have insulation, however the manufacturer claims that the Galvalume panels are very effective at reflecting the sun’s heat. The floor is raised above the ground, allowing breezes to flow both under and through the house. A pair of wind-driven roof turbine vents also pull out hot air. Stunning Modern Tiny Home Inspired by Japanese Living

01:34
One of the most appealing aspects of a tiny house is the minimal design and lifestyle that goes with it. And that's exactly what Chris Heining had in mind when he designed his first tiny home for himself back in 1999. Chris was originally inspired to build a small and simple home after living in various Asian countries over a number of years. He was particularly inspired by the simple design and minimal living lifestyle popular in Japan. Keeping that in mind, he built his first tiny home utilizing as much space as he could, while keeping things simple, modern and small. The home is 10 X 20 feet (200 sq ft) and 15 feet high. It has a bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining space, and a bathroom that features a full tub and shower. The home was sold for $59,000. Beautiful An Old Stone Tower Becomes A Small House In Hvar, Croatia

04:05
In 1761, a group of Franciscans built a windmill on a hill overlooking the port on the island of Hvar in the Adriatic Sea. The passage of time took a toll on the structure through, and a couple hundred years later the local residents were calling it the Ruina di Molino a Vento. The ruins passed to new owners who restored the tower’s stone base and converted the interior into a small home. It is now being used as a vacation rental. The tower’s living space is spread over five floors. Rooms are defined by changes in level rather than by walls. The entry door opens to the kitchen, with the dining area a few steps lower. A wood staircase curves up to a mezzanine level, used as a bedroom, before continuing up to the living room. The only interior walls separate the bathroom from the living room. Above the bathroom is a sleeping loft. Because it was never meant as living quarters, the stone tower has only small windows. However there is a great view over the old city from the top-level loft. Aside from the shortage of windows, the tower seems to make a fairly comfortable home, once you get used to going up and down all the steps. The tower is pretty conveniently located for visitors to Hvar. It is just a few minutes walk from the main square, although it is an uphill walk. You can rent the tower through Airbnb. “House Zilvar” Is A Small Wooden House With An Unusual Shape

03:18
“House Zilvar” is a small wooden house with an unusual shape. The home’s distinctive appearance is the result of what is essentially a shed roof that twists and folds along the length of the house, changing the direction of slope from one end to the other. Located in rural Bohemia, it was designed by Prague studio ASGK Design for a family of three who wanted a small energy-efficient house that would bring them closer together. The entrance is at one end of the house, together with the bathroom and storage closets. The rest of the 58.0 m2 (624 ft2) ground floor is an open living area comprised of an eat-in kitchen in the middle of the house and a lounge space at the far end Two separate bedroom lofts overlook the living area, allowing for easy communication between family members. Although both lofts overlook the living area, they cannot be seen from each other; the lowered roof valley in the middle divides the upper volume of the house in two, giving the bedrooms a degree of privacy. Each loft is reached by an industrial-style steel staircase. The ground floor is pinched in the middle, with an inset terrace pushing into the side of the house. That together with the roof shape results in a very dynamic space where more or less of the interior is visible as you move around the living area. The architects say that the interaction of sunlight with the angular design “dramatically changes the shape of the house and makes you feel like an explorer in a canyon.” The lounge area consists of a multi-level platform with large windows facing a pond on one side and meadows on the other. There is book and firewood storage under the edges of the raised floors, as well as hatches that provide access to additional under-floor storage. The house is very well-insulated with 18 cm of mineral wool insulation in the walls covered by 4 cm fibreboard on the exterior. The fibreboard allows the walls to “breathe”; water vapor can diffuse out rather than condensing within the wall cavity. The roof construction is similar but with a thicker layer of fibreboard. All the windows are high-efficiency triple-glazed units. Photographs by Petra Hajska, courtesy of ASGK Design. http://www.hajska.cz/ http://www.asgk.cz/ Text copyright 2015 SmallHouseBliss. The Cowboy Cabin | Tiny Texas Houses

04:09
A rustic little cabin sits on a beautiful piece of southeast Texas acreage, looking like it has been there for over a century. While the weathered siding and rusty tin roof are decades old, the cabin as a whole is not. It was placed there only a few years ago after having been built 50 miles away in the workshop of Tiny Texas Houses. If you’re not familiar with Tiny Texas Houses, they design and build small cabins and cottages almost entirely from salvaged materials. They obtain the material by deconstructing old houses and barns. While things like wiring and water piping are new for safety reasons, the company says that over 95% of the materials are reclaimed. The Cowboy Cabin is one of their larger builds. At 12′ by 28′, it has a 336 ft2 (31.2 m2) footprint. The kitchen is roughly in the middle of the ground floor, and is open to the living room. It looks like the living room is a pretty comfortable size and if you were willing to have one less armchair, you could fit in a small dining set. This cabin, however, has a fold-down table attached to the back of the kitchen peninsula. There is also the option of dining on the screened porch attached to the back of the cabin. The bathroom is behind the kitchen and features a shower lined with repurposed roofing tiles. The vintage sink has old-school separate hot and cold faucets, which look nifty but might not be so pleasant to use. Next to the bathroom is a nook that seems to be serving as a dressing area, with a good-sized closet and a storage cabinet. The small cabin has a sleeping loft at both ends, with the one over the living room being slightly larger than the one over the bathroom. The two loft ladders were cleverly integrated into the living room and kitchen shelving. The railing for one loft was created from a pair of old doors turned on their sides. This is a fantastic idea and very practical as most exterior doors are around 36″ wide, just the height required for interior railings. Besides the cabin itself, the property also has a lakeside pavilion ready for outdoor cooking and dining. Several photos of the pavilion are included at the end of the photo gallery. The plans for the Cowboy Cabin are available for purchase. Please see Tiny Texas House’s online store for details. KASITA TINY HOUSE: MODERN + MINIMALIST HOUSE

02:33
While dean at Huston-Tillotson University, Jeff Wilson spent his time living in a dumpster. Despite the small space, Jeff found big inspiration that prompted him to create the future of minimal living. In 2015, he started Kasita; an Austin-based company that builds prefabricated homes that have the option to be stacked to create an apartment building. Each home will be sold for $139,000 and has just 352 sq ft of space but there's already a waiting list! A fee of $1,000 gets you onto the list and the first of the homes begin shipping out to customers in June. Each home has a kitchen, sleeping space, storage, a bathroom, and a small raised living room. Large windows on one end of the home help to make the home feel bigger than it is. MINIMALISTE'S LE CHÊNE TINY HOUSE

Another beautiful tiny house from Minimaliste Tiny Houses! Named "Le Chene" (which translates to "The Oak"), the home is a stunning modern space and rather roomy at 300 sq ft, plus an 80 sq ft loft. The home's exterior is made from a white cedar, the majority of which is sealed with a polyurethane based varnish to keep the wood's natural colour. The rest of the wood exterior was dyed black to create a nice, contrasting look. The interior of the home features engineered red oak flooring and a knotted pine ceiling. There's a relatively spacious kitchen, a foldable dining table, a bathroom with a hidden washing machine, and what looks like a wood-burning fireplace. Le Chene is also self-sustained for water. There's a 250 gal. potable water tank and a 40 gal. hot water tank to supply the home's hydro needs. The home was sold to a customer who will be using the home as a year-round retreat. They'll also be adding a porch for an outdoor area to relax in. Keva Tiny House, A Smallish Living on Salt Spring Island

Birds’ Hill Cottage

03:02
A coastal rainforest surrounds Birds’ Hill Cottage in British Columbia. The vacation rental cottage is located on Salt Spring Island, a 90-minute ferry ride from Vancouver. With its board siding and peeled log porch posts, the exterior looks to my eye more like a classic cabin than a cottage. The inside, on the other hand, definitely says cottage with its white-painted board finishes accented by natural wood. This is a contemporary cottage, however, with an open-concept living area and soaring cathedral ceiling. Although the log post adds a rustic touch, it is countered by the modern flair of the concrete floors and counter tops. The cottage is roughly 800 ft2 (74 m2) with both a ground-floor bedroom and a large bedroom loft accessed by regular stairs. There is one full bathroom which features a large window in the bathtub/shower area, giving a bathing experience that one visitor described as like showering in the forest. If you look carefully, you’ll see that the bathroom has a partial vaulted ceiling to make room for the extra-tall window. That was made possible by keeping the loft above from extending all the way to the backside of the cottage. A small woodstove sits between the eat-in kitchen and the living area. With radiant heat embedded in the concrete floor, the stove is probably more for ambiance than heat, but would still be nice to cozy up to on chilly evenings. Porches on both front and back provide places to enjoy the forest air on hot summer days or rainy fall evenings. The back porch also offers the option of outdoor dining. The owners used welded wire panels to allow for a very transparent railing at much less cost than either tempered glass or commercially-available cable railing systems. Some building codes may not allow the wire mesh panels however, deeming them too easy for a child to climb. Birds’ Hill Cottage can be rented through VRBO. Enjoy the photos! A lakeside log cabin in Finland

02:17
Villa Maria is a family-sized vacation cabin on a small lake 40 km west of Helsinki, Finland. Though modern in design, the cabin was built using traditional methods. Each of the large-diameter logs was scribed and coped to fit the one below, and they are joined by hand-cut Scandinavian saddle notches at the corners. The cabin has a 90 m2 (969 ft2) floor plan with two bedrooms and a den. And of course, no Finnish vacation cabin is complete without a sauna. The cabin’s main living area is a great room facing the lake. A log beam divides the space into an eat-in kitchen and a living room section with a Scandinavian-style masonry stove. Large picture windows provide views of the lake while transom windows above bring in extra light. The two modestly-sized bedrooms open off the kitchen area. There is a two-piece bathroom along the entry hall, which gives it more privacy but does put it further from the bedrooms. The bathroom doesn’t have a shower as there is a shower room attached to the sauna. The rustic sauna is accessed through the den, suggesting that the den might originally have been intended as a change room for the sauna. Slightly altering the floor plan to have the sauna opening off the hallway instead would allow the den to be used as a third bedroom. There is also a small laundry room accessed from outside, although it would be possible to add a door from the bathroom. The cabin’s outside amenities include a large flagstone patio plus a covered porch perfect for outdoor dining. To keep the diners fed, there is a separate log barbecue hut with a built-in brick barbecue. But the main amenity is the lake itself, just steps away for a post-sauna dip. The tea house's interior features knotty spruce walls with contrasting black walnut. Crows’ Hermitage, A Converted Stone Barn In Ireland

02:56
A compact stone barn in the Irish countryside is now a sumptuous holiday cottage perfect for romantic escapes. The current owner converted the barn, now named Crows’ Hermitage, and has been using it as a vacation rental. It is located behind his house in the hamlet of Ardcath, less than an hour’s drive north of Dublin. The original barn was a two-storey structure, but with low ceilings on both levels. The limited interior height was further reduced by the need to build a new insulated floor over the existing floor, which would have been either stone or just compacted dirt. To get adequate headroom downstairs, a new bedroom loft was built a foot or two higher than the original upper floor, judging by the exterior stairs and doors at the back of the barn. That still left the small kitchen area below with a relatively low ceiling, but it benefits from being open to the double-height living room. In the photo below, notice how the side windows sit very low in the walls. Those windows were placed within the original door openings. The bathroom, tucked away at the back behind the kitchen, is split into two compartments. The bathroom door opens into a small space with just a shower stall. From there, another door leads to a second small room with the vanity and toilet. Although the floor and roof are now insulated, keeping the original character meant that the stone walls were left uncovered. That will lead to pretty chilly mornings in winter, the kind of chill where you can see your breath. There is a small woodstove that reportedly will warm the space up fairly quickly, but it is hard to keep a fire going overnight in a small stove. Luckily there is also a backup electric heater. Crows’ Hermitage would be an ideal base from which to explore Ireland’s east coast, including Dublin. It can be rented through Airbnb. Enjoy the photos! Garage Converted into 250 Sq. Ft. Tiny House | Perfect Small House Design

02:25
o this serves as a warning: don’t build on a foundation without permits because if you get caught, you’ll probably have to tear down all of your hard work. In this case, the homeowner seems to have rented the tiny house out to vacationers for a couple of years until someone notified the authorities about it and now he either has to tear it down or turn it back into a workshop/garage to meet code. Instead, he’s trying to sell it. The asking price is $20,000 but you have to remove it from the foundation since it’s not built on a trailer. According to the listing on Craigslist, you can hire a house raising service to help with this. It’s located in Vancouver. Please enjoy the tour, learn more, and re-share below. Thank you! Vintage Country Glamour: Sweetpea Cottage

04:35
Back in 1680, Isaac Newton was still working out his theory of gravity. That was the year this plastered stone cottage was built just a few miles inland from Cornwall’s northern “golden coast”. Many occupants later, it was purchased by a young couple who began a restoration and renovation project. After completing basic structural repairs and updates to the mechanical systems, they turned to the interior, redoing it in a style they call “vintage country glamour”. Like many old cottages, Sweetpea Cottage suffers from having very small windows and low ceilings, resulting in a dim interior. To brighten it up, the owners applied a coat of white paint to the walls, ceilings, trimwork and exposed beams. The white window surrounds help bounce the limited daylight into the cottage. Chandeliers add sparkle and a touch of elegance to the vintage country decor, while ornate mirrors help to spread the light around. The owners have chosen mostly pale fabrics and furniture, and they also gave the fireplace a good cleaning, removing centuries of soot to lighten the stone. The combined living and dining room takes up the entire ground floor of what was the original cottage as built 300 years ago. A much more recent extension at the back contains the country-style kitchen and the bathroom with its vintage fixtures. Prior to that addition, the cooking would likely have been done in what is now the living room fireplace. A switchback stair beside the fireplace leads to the two bedrooms tucked into the roof space. On the other side of the fireplace, a small inglenook was turned into cozy reading corner with an aged leather armchair and stacks of page-turners. Nearby, a sheepskin-lined window well provides another snug spot to curl up in. Sweetpea Cottage can be rented through Unique Home Stays. Babies are welcome, as the second bedroom has been set up as a nursery with everything a little one might need. Have a joyful Christmas! Beautiful Leachachan Barn | Rural Design | Small House Bliss

02:17
This traditional stone and slate barn stands on the south shore of Loch Duich in the Western Highlands of Scotland. It was originally built to shelter the farm’s working horses, and later used to store machinery. New owners bought the semi-derelict barn with an eye to using it as a family vacation home. They asked architect Alan Dickson of Rural Design to oversee the conversion. From the outset, the owners and architect were determined to retain the barn’s character. The main façade facing the loch and the road was kept true to the original appearance, so it still looks very much like a working barn. The entire roof structure had to be replaced and windows were installed in the three existing door openings, with wood shutters replacing the original wood doors. On the side gable, the stone wall was rebuilt around a large new picture window giving the living area views of the mountains to the east. A wood-clad extension was added onto the back side of the barn, where it would be least visible. Contrasting with the traditional outer appearance, a contemporary white living space was created inside. The main entry in the new wood extension leads into a central stair hall. From there, the large master bedroom is to the left in the west end of the original barn, the compact bathroom is straight ahead, and the open plan living area is to the right, taking up the east half. There is also a utility and laundry room in the extension The living area is open to the roof and exposed trusses, while the other half of the barn has an open loft above that is easily big enough to be shared by a few kids. But if more privacy is preferred, the stairs divide the loft into two distinct spaces, so it would be fairly easy to convert it into two enclosed bedrooms. Leachachan Barn is available for vacation rentals through Wilderness Cottages. Enjoy the photos! The Cubby | Bernard Maybeck

03:29
The “Cubby” started out as a single-car garage before being converted and expanded into an eclectic one-bedroom cottage. It was designed for his own property by Bernard Maybeck, a renowned architect associated with the Arts and Crafts movement in the San Fransisco Bay Area. When the 1923 Berkeley fire destroyed the family house, along with several hundred other homes, the Maybecks turned to tiny house living. Bernard Maybeck designed a one-room studio for his son Wallen to live in while the rest of the family took up residence in a tiny cottage that was moved onto the property. A few years later, Wallen was married and the couple had newborn twin daughters. Needing more space, Wallen moved his family into the Cubby. At that time it was just a long narrow room with French doors at each end. The building had a very wide sheltering roof, a typical feature of Maybeck’s residential designs. Taking advantage of the 4′ (1.2 m) overhangs, the young couple pushed the walls out to obtain more room inside. That added space was used for a two-piece bathroom and a simple kitchen on the downhill side, and seating nooks flanking an oversized concrete fireplace on the opposite wall. Some time later, a bedroom and bathroom addition was built into the hillside above the garage and connected to it by an internal stair. Together the two parts have 724 ft2 (67.3 m2) of floor space. Because of the slope, the bedroom’s ensuite bathroom and walk-in closet were raised a few steps higher than the bedroom itself. Like the main living space, the bedroom has French doors at each end with one set leading to a private patio and the other set opening to a deck with a view of the bay. Both parts of the cottage have high, airy ceilings. In the original garage, the exposed trusses were stained a teal blue to highlight them against the redwood paneling. The bedroom addition was finished with stained plywood. Maybeck was known for adapting industrial products for residential use, and plywood was then an innovative new material. The lower parts of the walls have since been covered in wallpaper. Not many people are fortunate enough to live in a Bernard Maybeck-designed home, but this one can be rented for vacation stays through Airbnb. Enjoy the photos! The Waterhaus, A Tiny Sustainable Prefab Home GreenPod

03:18
GreenPod Development is a prefab home builder in Port Townsend, Washington. As the name suggests, GreenPod places an emphasis on sustainable and healthy homes. Their houses are built from structural insulated panels, ensuring a well-insulated and tight building envelope. All the interior finishes are chosen to promote healthy indoor air quality, avoiding any product that might outgas volatile organic compounds. Clay wall finish is an option for customers who want to avoid paint entirely. The fabrics are made from organic naturally antimicrobial plant fibers that won’t support the growth of mildew or mold. With the requirement that the homes be narrow enough for road transport, many one-bedroom prefabs end up with similar rectangular floor plans having an open living area at one end, the bedroom at the other end, and the bathroom in between. GreenPod’s 450 ft2 (41.8 m2) Waterhaus model follows that formula but with a couple of novel twists. Rather than a normal rectangular bathroom, the Waterhaus architect designed a T-shaped layout. The bathroom is narrower at the shower, giving a bit of extra space to both the bedroom and the living area. The extra space in the bedroom corner creates a reading nook by the window, while a niche in the living room can be used for an optional fireplace or storage cabinets. Check out the floor plan in the gallery to see how this was done. Corner windows are great because they let daylight reflect off the flanking walls, lighting the room more evenly, and because they emphasize the long diagonal dimension of the room, making it seem larger. A unique aspect of the Waterhaus floor plan is the small inset area at the back of the house. This indent allows both the living room and the bedroom to have corner windows that are located towards the middle of the house rather than at the far corners. One benefit is that the view is directed away from any neighboring houses. A second benefit has to do with furniture placement. With the windows pushed towards the middle of the house, you can still enjoy the view from a couch or bed placed against an end wall. That helps to shorten circulation paths through the house. Clerestory windows are another way to get more even light levels while maintaining privacy. Both the living area and the bedroom have clerestory windows bringing in daylight from three sides. Optional translucent glass panes in the passage doors help with lighting the hallway. The United States has seen a lot of prefab and modular home builders come and go over the years. GreenPod Development has bucked the trend, surviving even the 2007-2009 housing market crash. That may be due in part to their flexible approach, offering customers the option of either factory-built modules or on-site construction using prefab panels. A modular build could be the better choice for remote locations where skilled tradespeople are hard to find, while a site-built home might be the only choice if lenders are unwilling to finance a modular home, as happened following the housing crash. Shown Here Is A Prototype Of The Soleta ZeroEnergy One, The Smallest Home in The Lineup.

03:05
The Soleta zeroEnergy is a new family of modular eco-friendly houses by the Justin Capra Foundation for Inventions and Sustainable Technologies (FITS) in Romania. FITS set out to design flexible homes that would be affordable, both in terms of the initial purchase price and ongoing operating costs. The houses combine proven, practical strategies with leading edge technologies. Shown here is a prototype of the Soleta zeroEnergy One, the smallest home in the lineup. The Soleta zeroEnergy has an unusual gambrel roof design that is more commonly associated with farm buildings and airplane hangars than houses. But unlike those utilitarian structures, the zeroEnergy One is covered in wood shingles, has huge windows on the side and gable end, and has massive wood pergolas shading those windows. The somewhat utilitarian appearance notwithstanding, the zeroEnergy One looks to be quite cozy inside, with exposed beams and wood finishes. The glue-laminated wood support arches leave the interior free of bearing walls or columns. The ground floor is 48 m2 (517 ft2), though the usable area will be slightly less due to the sloping sidewalls. Upstairs (with the stairs being a set of giant steps that double as storage cabinets) is a 9 m2 (97 ft2) lofted bedroom The FITS team hopes that purchasers will pair the zeroEnergy homes with some form of renewable energy system in order to actually achieve net zero energy use on an annual basis. However, even if one is hooked up to standard utility services, it will still use those services sparingly. Large high-performance windows make good use of available daylight for illumination, and when artificial light is needed, it is supplied by low-power LED fixtures. The houses are designed to use natural ventilation when the weather is warm. For cool weather they have heat recovery ventilators that extract the heat from exhaust air. To maximize energy savings, an intelligent control system continually monitors the energy use, climate and air quality. When the residents are away from home, they can operate the system remotely using a mobile phone. As well, a rainwater collection and treatment system is provided. Lots of photos for this one…enjoy! Two Birds Laneway House | Lanefab

01:58
The Two Birds laneway house is somewhat of an anomaly for Vancouver, Canada. Because it is built on a large (for Vancouver) lot of 80′ in width, architect Bryn Davidson of Lanefab Design/Build was able to design a floor plan with two bedrooms on a single level. The home’s 940 ft2 (87.3 m2) floor space is divided into two rectangular volumes arranged in an L shape around the sunny south-facing patio. The two parts are separated slightly, joined only by the narrow neck of the entry hall. The larger part contains the public spaces and one of the bedrooms, while the other is the master bedroom suite. The floor plan lends itself to building in phases, starting with just a small one-bedroom house and only proceeding with the second bedroom when it is needed or the budget allows. The main living space opens to the patio with a folding window wall. The room has a high ceiling that follows the line of the shed roof. Reclaimed timber beams add a slight rustic touch to the otherwise contemporary interior. A corner window seat with lowered ceiling creates an intimate dining alcove within the larger living space. Clerestory windows were used in the bathrooms and bedrooms to get natural light without giving up privacy. For views, the master bedroom has windows on either side of the bed looking into fenced-off pocket gardens. One small garden is tucked between the master bedroom wing and the main house, where it can also be seen from the entry hall. The small house was designed to be very energy-efficient with a superinsulated shell. Triple-glazed windows are set in 13″-thick walls built from structural insulated panels. With some passive solar gain, very little additional heating is required. Wildflower Cabin Still Retains That Old-Time Feel With Log Trusses

03:13
Wildflower Cabin was built in the 1920s and still retains that old-time cabin feel with log trusses, exposed rafters and knotty pine panelling. It sits near Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino National Forest, California. The cabin once housed U.S. Forest Service workers but is now privately owned and is being used for vacation rentals. The front door opens to the living room in the middle of the cabin’s 600 ft2 (55.7 m2) floor plan. As you come in the door, the kitchen and dining room are to the right while the bedroom and bathroom are to the left. The focus of the living room is the original brick fireplace, perfect for warming up after a day of skiing at one of the nearby resorts. A steep stair to one side leads up to a snug loft over the kitchen and dining room. The loft could be used as a guest bedroom but it wouldn’t be the most convenient as the only bathroom is reached by passing through the main-floor bedroom. Both the bathroom and the compact kitchen have been updated in styles appropriate to the cabin. The kitchen features custom cabinets and a vintage Wedgewood stove. Only a couple hours drive from Los Angeles, Wildflower Cabin provides an easy escape from the city. It can be rented through Airbnb.
