Everytime you smoke your blood gets thick and dirty with toxins

00:31
The 'Toxic cycle' advert from Public Health England shows the toxic cycle of cigarette smoke as it enters the blood and affects the lungs, heart and brain. It shows the damage that smoking can do to every part of the body -- and explains that every time you smoke, blood that's thick and dirty with toxins circulates through your body in seconds, increasing your chances of a heart attack or stroke. If you could see the damage, you'd stop. NHS Smokefree helps thousands of people quit smoking every year and knows how challenging it can be. If you are looking to make a fresh start this New Year, search Smokefree online for a range of free support and resources to help you quit successfully in 2014. nhs.uk/smokefree

The adverts dramatise the fact that over 80% of secondhand smoke is invisible and odourless, making it impossible to control. So, even if you smoke near an open window or door, the smoke can travel and harm others. The campaign encourages smokers to order a free Smokefree Kit either by texting or from the Smokefree website. The Kit will provide additional information on the harms of secondhand smoke as well as giving smokers tools to help them make their home and car Smokefree, along with information and support on quitting.

2009 Smokefree campaign: Worried

00:32
The Worried campaign was part of the smoking as the 'enemy of the family' strategy and aimed to reinforce motivation for smokers to quit. The campaign looked at smoking from the perspective of a concerned son or daughter. In TV, radio, press and outdoor advertising, children openly dismissed things that would normally be perceived as worrying -- like popularity on social networking sites. What they actually viewed as worrying was their parent's smoking. The campaign was created as a 'wake-up call' to smoking parents, motivating them to quit for their children's sake. More information on this campaign can be found at http://smokefree.nhs.uk/resources/news/campaigns/2009-smokefree-campaign-worried/

2003 Smokefree campaign: Death Repackaged

00:43
Recognising the power of charity voices to engage with smokers, the Department of Health partnered with Cancer Research UK for the "Death Repackaged" campaign. It was created to highlight the hidden dangers of smoking, particularly the perception that 'light and mild' cigarettes are less dangerous. Featuring a range of dangerous animals with cuddly names, the hard-hitting ads exposed how smokers have been misled by terms such as 'Low Tar' and 'Light'. This was also the Department Of Health's first integrated anti-smoking campaign, including TV, radio, outdoor and press advertising.

00:42
This campaign took a totally different approach to previous campaigns by focusing on the power of smoking addiction. Shocking images of people literally impaled on fish hooks, showed how an addiction is serious and irrational, making people do things that they don't necessarily want to do. The campaign was featured on TV, billboards and other outdoor media as well as in the press. "I quit for my daughter"

01:27
Brendan, 37, got help from his local stop smoking service. He had been smoking since he was 18, but he was finding it tough to keep up with his young daughter in the park and decided it was time to quit. Brendan found out about Smokefree and the local stop smoking services on offer, so he decided to give it a try. From the start he found that having the "emotional support ... of guys all looking to give up in various ways but all looking to do the same thing - and that was stay off cigarettes" was a "massive help". It's a great feeling for Brendan when he sees that his daughter is happy because he has successfully quit smoking for good: "Going back to smoking isn't an option for me because I want to be able to keep up with her; I want to be able to see her grow up. It's a daily reminder that I have no intention of going back to smoking at all."

2009 Smokefree campaign: Smokefree Generation - 'Ryan'

00:31
"Smokefree Generation" was a multi-award-winning campaign that featured children making real stop smoking appeals to their parents, which took a similar approach to 'Scared', 'Worried' and 'Wanna be like you' in showing smoking as the 'enemy of the family'. Real kids -- not actors -- were asked a simple question: 'If you could give your parents a message about stopping smoking, what would it be?' Their responses formed this emotionally charged campaign, rolled out across TV, radio, outdoor, press and digital. 'The support I received from the NHS was nothing short of fantastic!'

02:08
Michelle had been smoking for nearly half her life before she quit. As the mum of two young children, Michelle was worried about her health and her ability to look after her children in the future. She used the Quit Kit to prepare herself for quitting and then followed it up with the group sessions at her local stop smoking service. She also used nicotine replacement therapy to ease her cravings and keep her on track. This combined approach really worked for Michelle: "The programme really helped by constantly reminding me that I did not want to be a smoker. I also went to one-to-one sessions, where the adviser arranged for me to get a nicotine replacement programme. The support I received from the NHS was nothing short of fantastic!"

"I can exercise much longer at the gym now"

02:58
Mario, 51, had been smoking for 30 years before he went Smokefree, alongside his colleagues. His local NHS stop smoking service offered to run a group session in his workplace so that Mario and the partners and staff at his catering business could support each other to break the addiction. The group sessions had a 100% success rate and Mario and his team were delighted. Mario has noticed a wide range of changes since giving up for good: "I'm able to taste, smell - all my senses seem heightened. I can also exercise much longer at the gym now. Although social gatherings were initially the hardest time to resist the urge to reach for a cigarette, now I feel a real sense of freedom."

From 1st October 2015 it is illegal to smoke in vehicles with someone under the age of 18 present. The law is changing to protect children from the dangers of secondhand smoke. The best way to protect children from secondhand smoke is to stop smoking altogether and as 1st October is the start of Stoptober, we’re encouraging smokers to join the country’s 28-day mass quit attempt. Half a million have successfully remained smokefree for 28 days in previous years and today thousands more will start their Stoptober quit challenge together.

"Alisha has used the money she saved to go on holiday"

02:39
Mum and daughter Beverley and Alisha couldn’t believe how much money they saved by quitting. They both used their local NHS stop smoking service to go Smokefree. Beverley, 46, had been smoking for 30 years before she quit. She had gone through a period of ill-health shortly before she took the decision to quit, and had been using nicotine replacement therapy. Alisha decided to quit as well, helping to support her mum — and they did it together by seeing an expert adviser from their local stop smoking service. The adviser helped them figure out the best treatment to suit each of them individually. Now, Beverley says, they are reaping the rewards: "Alisha has used the money she saved to go on holiday ... My partner and I completely redecorated our house so it doesn't smell of smoke any more. Receiving so much support from my local stop smoking service has inspired me to encourage my friends to stop smoking too!"

"It was important to me that my partner quit"

03:10
Victoria quit smoking when she found out she was pregnant. The hardest thing for her was staying stopped after she had given birth, and that's when Victoria decided to get in touch with her local stop smoking service. Victoria was also keen for her partner Mark to stop smoking. Mark was quite a heavy smoker, and it was something that had been worrying Victoria after the birth of their son: "It was important to me that he quit as well - just to give me that extra bit of encouragement." Mark says: "To start with I found it really tricky. There were loads of people smoking at work and they didn’t really seem to care. But I just persevered with it and carried on. In the end I just got there ... I'm so glad I did".

"If I can beat smoking then I can take on anything"

01:24
Jo, 32, made the decision to quit when her son told her he was worried about her smoking. Jo said that her son Dylan was the biggest motivation of all to help her quit smoking. Hearing him say: "stop smoking, mummy" was enough to make her want to stop for good. She had tried to break the addiction several times before, but eventually did it with help from her local stop smoking service. After trying to quit smoking numerous times with nicotine replacement therapy, including inhalers and patches, she always ended up relapsing. This time she's trying a medicine named Champix (Varenicline) and it's working really well for her. Jo has also been using her local stop smoking service and because her advisers are ex-smokers themselves, she's found their advice and support invaluable in helping her to stop smoking for good. Finding the type of NHS stop smoking support that was right for her really helped Jo: "It will have a positive impact on how I tackle anything in life now, knowing I can do this, which is the hardest thing I've ever had to do. If I can beat smoking then I can take on anything."
