The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate students unparalleled training for future careers in pharmacy, medicine, and biomedical research. Our innovative, rigorous curriculum integrates concepts from biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmacology and physiology. Alumni pursue exciting professional opportunities that improve our society’s health and well-being. Pharmaceutical scientists are rapidly changing the field of drug discovery and development. Graduates of our program are well qualified to seek employment in the public and private sectors, or to pursue graduate degrees such as a PhD, MD, or PharmD. UCI’s location near large biomedical companies and strong reputation in chemistry and biological sciences make UCI the No. 1 California school for producing pharmacy school applicants. Nearly half of our graduates pursue a doctorate degree in pharmacy school, with many getting accepted into competitive programs at USC, UCSF, and UCSD. First year PhD student Noora Siddiqui shares her experience so far in the MCP program at UCI. MCP Program The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers a unique gateway graduate program in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology leading to a PhD in Chemistry, Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, or Pharmacological Sciences with a Concentration in either Pharmaceutical Sciences or Pharmacology. The program is both interdisciplinary in nature while at the same time offering an in-depth, individualized state-of-the-art practical and theoretical training in each student’s specific field of interest. This integration of specialization and exposure across disciplines offers a breadth of expertise that is not easily achievable in any single, individual department, and which uniquely prepares graduates for success in the rapidly changing field of pharmaceutical sciences. This dual goal of specialization, with an interdisciplinary foundation, is accomplished through a one-year initial program of coursework and lab rotations, followed by a transition into one of the participating department’s PhD programs for in-depth specialization and research. Upon completion of the one-year MCP curriculum, students choose a faculty advisor affiliated with one of the above-listed participating departments and transition into their “home” department to complete the remaining degree requirements for their PhD. A Day in the Jafari Lab

Behind-the-scenes of what goes on in the Jafari Lab at UCI. Led by Professor Mahtab Jafari, the Jafari Lab's ultimate goal is to add healthy years to human life by slowing the aging process and delaying the progression of age-related diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease. Using fruit flies as their model system, the Jafari Lab has developed an algorithm and a number of bioassays to identify compounds that increased lifespan and improved healthspan.
