Video: The Foreign Legion, another French exception

21:10
Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN Shrouded in mystery and prestige, the French Foreign Legion is just as feared by its enemies as it is envied by its allies. The legionnaires come from across the world, prepared to fight for a country that is not even their own. In the Legion, they learn to fight in extreme conditions, live together and work as a team. But who are these soldiers and what motivates them? While embedded with the 13th Half-Brigade of the Foreign Legion in Mali, our reporters found out. “The Legion is our home” is the motto of the Foreign Legion, the legendary elite branch of the French Army. Africans, Americans, Asians, Europeans, anyone between 17 and 40 years old can sign up to fight for France. The Legion was formed in 1831 and, to this day, inspires fascination. From the very start, it earned a reputation for being an army made up of wanted criminals. Today though, the Legion says entry is forbidden to anyone linked to violent crimes, sexual assault or drug-trafficking. However, the Legion still gives a chance to those who want to leave their pasts behind, earn a living and serve in an army with one of the best reputations in the world. Only one in five hopefuls makes it through the notoriously tough selection tests and once they’re in, the Legionnaires have to agree to a strict set of rules if they are to stay in. They’re punished if they fail to learn French and misunderstand orders. Claire Paccalin and Fanny Allard followed the 13th Half-Brigade of the Foreign Legion at their French base and during a counter-terrorism operation in Mali. They spent six days camping out in the desert near the border with Niger to find out how the Legion works and what motivates these men to fight for a country that is not their own. Maxime, an 18-year-old Belgian, told them why he quit a carpentry apprenticeship to join the Legion. They spoke to Brandon, an American who drives his comrades crazy by playing country music at the barracks. Then there's Sergeant Giacomo, who started out camera-shy but later opened up about being a Legionnaire. http://www.france24.com/en/reporters Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/France24_en

Understanding 'laicité': The ins and outs of state secularism - French Connections

05:55
Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN This week we take a closer look at a concept that is fundamental to life in France: "laicité". Quite literally it’s translated as secularism, the separation of church and state, but France’s brand of secularism is quite particular and controversial. A product of French philosophy and history, "laicité" was signed into law in 1905. The Law on the Separation of the Churches and State requires the government to remain neutral in terms of faith, while at the same time safeguarding everyone’s freedom to practice their own religion. Concretely, religion is banned from state matters and public schools. But the application of secularism in practice is subject to some controversy. Critics say state secularism is too extreme and is increasingly used to stigmatize Muslims. Meanwhile, proponents say laicité allows us to live together in harmony and protects our freedom. State TV released images of Bashar al Assad walking into work, in the presidency building in central Damascus. And its military was defiant. "Three treacherous acts of aggressions were carried out at 3:55am by the US, France and Britain. //Our air defences responded efficiently and downed most of the rockets. While some hit scientific research buildings, the damage was only material. Other missiles were diverted before they could hit a military location in HomsAnd as they brushed off the damage as material only, it fell to Damascus's most important ally, Russia, to warn of wider ramifications. Sergey Rudskoy, Chief of Russian General Staff Main Operations Directorate:"This American aggression shows us that they aren''t interested in an objective investigation of the alleged chemical atatck, but only in disrupting the peace process and destabilising the Middle East Back in Damascus, civilians - and ardent regime supporters - celebrated what they said was a clear victory by their government. "I came to congratulate the Syrian air defence forces, who managed to bring down your missiles, Trump. You can''t shake us, the Syrian people.""These strikes have given us more determination and persistence. It hasn''t affected us, we''ve seen worse than this. The vicious cycle of student debt in the US

16:52
Subscribe to France 24 now : http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN Student debt in the United States now stands at over a trillion dollars. And it’s going up, to the tune of 2,700 dollars per second. FRANCE 24 reporters Philip Crowther and Gallagher Fenwick spoke to Americans struggling to pay back student loans and the lucky few who managed to avoid the debt trap. Our reporters met current students, parents, teachers, and former students in three states: Maryland, North Carolina, and New Orleans. In Maryland, FRANCE 24 spoke to Nina Ogor and her mother. After recently graduating from the University of Maryland, Nina still lives at home with her mother. Several small jobs keep Nina afloat, but she earns just 12 dollars an hour. That’s not enough to cover her monthly 1,200 dollar student loan repayment. She’s not the only one in debt in this household. Her mother is still weighed down by her student loans. Together they owe 150,000 dollars. Theirs is one of the many shocking examples of student debt accumulated over the years by Americans. The price of an education in North Carolina, for example, stands at over 120,000 dollars for an out-of-state student. That’s approximately the national average. Our reporters met one of the few debt-free students at the University of North Carolina in Asheville. Gray Barrett pays nothing, not a single dollar. He’s one of the lucky winners of the ultimate prize, a full scholarship. Gray happily shows us the complete package on offer at his college. In the USA, a university needs to have it all to attract students and their tuition payments: the sports stadium, the idyllic campus, and all the other bells and whistles necessary to get a young American to sign up for the college experience. But Gray Barrett is an exception. Like 70% of all American university students, David Augustine Jr., took out loans to pay for his business studies degree which he completed in 2009. Our reporters met the man now known as Dee-1 in his hometown of New Orleans. He also owed thousands to Sallie Mae, the company that provides student loans. He became a full-time rapper, and luckily his success enabled him to pay back his loan. David Augustine Jr. has now written a song in which he slams a system that is "out of control". His video, posted in February, was viewed more than a million times in only a week. The Washington Post newspaper even says his hit might be "the anthem for a generation". The rapper now takes his song to university campuses around the country. And each time it touches a nerve – there are 40 million Americans who still have not paid back their student loans. Worked to death: Japan questions high-pressure corporate culture

Subscribe to France 24 now : http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN In Japan, some employees are literally working themselves to death. Death from overwork – known as "karoshi" in Japanese – is a problem for one in five Japanese companies, according to the first government white paper on the issue. The paper, released last month, shows that about 200 people die from overwork every year - mainly from heart attacks, strokes or suicide. But some Japanese think the government have not gone far enough. They want to see the official definition of karoshi expanded. Now the families of victims are fighting to gain recognition of karoshi as a serious threat to the health of the nation's workforce. FRANCE 24 explores some of the social and corporate factors behind Japan’s culture of overwork. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Elom Marcel Toble. #Reporters - In Indian Ocean, Jarawa tribe risks dying out

For tens of thousands of years, the Jarawa have been self-sufficient hunter-gatherers, living in harmony with nature on India’s Andaman Islands. But their way of life was turned upside down with the mass arrival of tourists at the start of the 2000s. Disturbing reports document "human safaris", sexual abuse of women, as well as the introduction of alcohol and tobacco. Our reporter went to meet this population, who risk dying out. Deep in the Indian Ocean, a few hundred kilometres from India, the Andaman Islands archipelago has become the El Dorado of the Indian middle class. Each year, thousands of tourists enjoy the coral beaches of this little corner of paradise on Earth with its stunning landscape. It is also a strategic location, where the government has chosen to build the Indian Ocean’s largest port. But this spectacular economic development comes at the expense of the Afro-Asian peoples who live in the archipelago and who are among the last primitive tribes on the planet. EXCLUSIVE - Iraq: On the road to Mosul with Iraqi, Kurdish forces

15:28
Subscribe to France 24 now : http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN A few weeks before Iraqi and Kurdish forces launched their offensive to retake Mosul from Islamic State group jihadists, our reporters in Iraq witnessed the final preparations for the strategic battle. FRANCE 24 brings you an exclusive report, filmed at the end of August in northern Iraq. Our reporters travelled to the Kurdish front line, where block by block, the Peshmerga have retaken eleven villages around Mosul, the largest city in northern Iraq and the stronghold of the Islamic State (IS) group since June 2014. Our team also went to Qayyarah, a town located around 60 km south of Mosul, where the Iraqi army has set up its rear area position and was busy preparing for the offensive on Mosul. The operation to drive out thousands of jihadists from the north Iraqi city began overnight on Monday October 17. The crucial battle could last "several weeks, maybe months", French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Tuesday. It will be "a difficult fight'", US President Barack Obama admitted. FRANCE 24's reporters witnessed the offensive's final planning, alongside Kurdish and Arab troops, rival forces now joined to fight a common enemy. As the noose tightens around them, the IS group jihadists use all sorts of tactics - suicide attacks, car bombings, landmines and torched oil wells - to repel the offensive on Mosul and thwart the US air strikes. ►► On France24.com: Iraqi coalition comes together to fight IS group in Mosul, but can unity last?  Visit our website : http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel : http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter : https://twitter.com/France24_en

FOCUS - Syrian refugees meet with hostility in Egypt

Since President Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the Egyptian Army in July, many of the estimated 250,000 Syrian refugees living in Egypt are feeling the backlash. They're being increasingly stigmatised, accused of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood - the Islamic organisation that formed the backbone of Morsi's deposed government. Some State and private-owned media are accused of whipping up anti-Syrian feeling, after some Syrians took part in the pro-Morsi protests following his removal from power. 09/17/2013 FOCUS An exclusive in-depth report from a FRANCE24 correspondent, followed by comment and analysis with the author and the anchor in the newsroom in Paris.
