U.S. Naval Academy - 5 Things You Must Do On Campus

02:36
http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-things-you-must-do-at-the-u-s-naval-academy/ - You must stay on track to graduate in eight semesters. It’s somewhere between a good idea and a rapidly fading dream at most schools, but you must graduate from the Naval Academy in eight semesters unless you are a very exceptional case. If you fail or incomplete a class that is a prerequisite for another series of classes that you can’t complete within four years, you’re either going to mandatory summer school or in danger of being summarily booted.

http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-things-i-wish-i-knew-about-before-attending-u-s-naval-academy/ - Don’t bring anything you don’t have to. In addition to being relieved of most of your hair, you will be given everything you need down to pens, pencils, and nail clippers on your first day. Everything else you bring will end up in a storage room for the first couple months. When you see it again, whatever it is will almost certainly not be useful to you and will be a pain to store or dispose of later. So, take the chance to start fresh in a new place with absolutely nothing but the clothes on your back, which will themselves be placed in a cardboard box for shipment back to where you came from a couple hours after you arrive.

There is only so much one can discern from those generic college tours and even during orientation weekends. However, part of the college experience is that steep learning curve; living away from home for the first time is simultaneously exciting and terrifying.

http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-things-i-wish-i-knew-about-manhattan-school-of-music/ - For any aspiring classical or jazz musician looking for the best educational experience, it’s highly likely that Manhattan School of Music is one of their top choices. The prestigious faculty, successful graduates, and its prime location in New York City speak for itself at least, that was all I knew about the school before I made the final decision. Seven years and three degrees later, I would like to share my stories and some inside information that I’ve learned about this place that I can proudly call my “home.” I was the only one who went to a music conservatory from my local public high school. At MSM, basically everybody is a wonder-kid in their hometown from all over the world! Regardless of their nationality, age, gender, or major, each and every student here is crazy talented.

If you got into the Naval Academy, like any top tier or elite school, you probably were in fact pretty special wherever you came from. On Induction Day, you’ll be getting your head shaved (guys) / hair cut (girls) alongside 1,200 other people who were special wherever they were from. In the land where everyone’s special, no one is special. Get in line with everyone else, keep your mouth shut, do your best at whatever gets tossed at you, and help your classmates in the early going.

Before you dive into your first semester here are a few things to consider that will help make the transition to college much more pleasant. If you’re going to be a productive student you need brain food. Everyone that lives in the dorms is required to have a food plan. But it doesn’t take long for the cafeteria food served at the Heritage Center to get old.

That can be great, especially if you’re a commuter. But if you’re an 18-20 year old, either directly out of high school, or transferring from community college, you might want more of the stereotypical “college experience.” It’s not impossible to have that type of experience, but it takes vigilance. A lot of your friends will be driving back to Santa Clarita, Hollywood, the Westside, and other parts of LA after class – they might not be as available to hang out as they would have been at other local choices like UCLA or USC.

That only lasted a few weeks though, and before I knew it, I was talking to anybody and everybody around campus because I realized that I wasn’t alone they were all new at some point or another. The gluttonous dining halls, complete lack of curfew, gigantic auditorium style classes, and endless on campus events allowed me to revel in FREEDOM! Still, there was a lot that I didn’t expect, some things more pleasantly surprising than others.

These are the five things I wish I had been told before I kicked off my fast paced and zany four years at UChicago. University of Chicago’s reputation for academic rigor is not exaggerated. Most students take far too long to realize that the most important part of their UChicago education is not the compulsory stuff like classes or homework.

This was how it was for me when I went to study at Bloomsburg University to pursue my dream of being a lawyer. Here are five things I wish I knew about Bloom before I chose to attend. Bloomsburg University is located on a beautiful Pennsylvania landscape with green trees and fresh air. Most of the classes are held in five buildings located next to one another around what is known as the academic quad. When the weather is warm the campus is filled with lively people – for when it is cold, the buildings are only a short walk from one to the other. With an awesome library updated with the latest technology as the headpiece to the setting, Bloomsburg University’s campus is the best place to be. The only sources of food on campus from from Aramarc, a chemical company that produces highly processed food that is not good for your health at all. Anywhere except for the commons, all you can really get are burgers and chicken sandwiches, fried appetizers, pizza, low quality salads, and processed shelf snacks. The wraps are acceptable but the prices are ridiculous. At the Commons, they try to give it a more home cooked feel but you can taste fakeness in what they are trying to pull off.

http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/five-things-to-avoid-at-the-university-of-florida/ - There are many unspoken social rules at University of Florida, like to not wear your high school sport’s shirts, or play humans vs. zombies on campus; and, there are other rules of more practical relevance These rules have been learned over an entire college experience, and are undoubtedly the most important. No matter what the season is or how beautiful of a day it might be, it is very likely that it will rain at least once. So, always be prepared and keep an umbrella on you. You may need it for an unexpected monsoon, the persistent humidity, or even just the harsh sun’s rays. Just remember that nothing is as miserable as shivering in the freezing lecture halls while you are soaking wet, and you will certainly find a permanent place in your backpack for an umbrella. Even if the meals seem delicious during Preview, when you come sleep in the dorms and get used to campus before your semester stars, it is meaningless. The food quality is a trap- it goes down almost immediately. More importantly, the meal plans end up being overpriced because extremely easy to end up with leftover money on your balance that cannot be spent anywhere else, and because you could spend less money cooking for yourself.

On warm spring days, students can be found playing Frisbee on the extensive grounds, studying in the courtyard outside the dining hall, or just bathing in the sunlight. In addition to the beautiful grounds, Western Carolina has excellent academic programs that provide extensive training for the job world.

Flagler College - 5 Things to Avoid

http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-Things-to-Avoid-at-Flagler-College/ - Flagler advocates building a community and keeping students from going home on the weekends, but there are a couple things that contradict this. The weekend hours of all campus buildings are greatly reduced. If you want to go to the library on the weekend, it better be before 5-pm. Bug’s Bistro (the only on campus alternative to the dining hall) also closes early.

University of Chicago - 5 Things You Must Do On Campus

02:42
http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-things-you-must-do-at-the-university-of-chicago/ - Every college has its traditions and NUANCES, and University of Chicago is no different. Here are some things you just have to do in order to have the fullest experience at the University. The University of Chicago Scavenger Hunt, or “Scav,” is UChicago’s most VENERATED tradition. At midnight on the Thursday prior to Mother’s Day, a list of hundreds of “items” surfaces. Each item is its own cryptic, bizarre clue, asking each dorm affiliated team to create, find, or enact something. The items vary so wildly that I couldn’t begin to describe them here, though you might find some photos or videos from the event online.

http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-Things-I-Wish-I-Had-Known-About-Rice-University-Before-Attending/ - If you’re considering applying to Rice University or if you have done even brief research on the school, I’m sure you’ve heard of the residential college system. Think of it as the houses in Harry Potter. All incoming freshmen are randomly sorted into one of eleven residential colleges at Rice. Every college has some 200-300+ students, and while each one functions as a dorm, in reality the colleges are so much more than a collection of bedrooms. Of course the colleges are a place for eating, sleeping, and socializing.

University of Arizona - 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Attending

02:27
http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-things-i-wish-i-knew-before-attending-the-university-of-arizona/ - During my four years until graduating in 2012, I spent my time in Tucson, Arizona, immersing myself in school spirit like it was required for a participation grade. I took advantage of upperclassmen contacts and by the end of my first semester I knew which restaurants had the cheapest appetizers, which libraries always had an open computer, and which professors showed the most mercy while grading papers. These are the type of school hacks everyone learns with time, but there are still five things I wish I knew before attending that would have made the experience even better.

University of Chicago - 5 Things to Avoid

02:36
http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-things-to-avoid-at-university-of-chicago/ - From major to minor discomforts, here are five quintessential University of Chicago experiences you don’t need to learn the hard way You may grow ashamed of the goofy, fresh faced photo on your UChicago ID card or “UCID,” but there is a reason why the card they issue you during Orientation is meant to follow you throughout your four years. The UCID is your skeleton key to everything on campus, so losing track of it can be a severe handicap on daily productivity. Having limited access to the library, the dining hall, the printing system, and even your residence hall is enough to drive a busy student insane.

UMass Amherst - 5 Things I Wish I Knew About Before Attending

http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-things-i-wish-i-knew-about-umass-amherst-before-attending/ - College is probably the best and worst time you will ever have in your life. That being said, I have a love-hate relationship with my alma mater, UMass Amherst. I remember walking into the Southwest territory of the campus, for my first day of orientation, and the amount of electric excitement pulsing through my body was outstanding. Here I was; my first official step to freedom’s door, the freedom from high school, curfews, and a lack of autonomy. I thought for sure the next four years of my life would be full of orange mocha Frappucinos, blackout bliss, food comas, and learning some pretty cool things about life.

http://www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/Things-to-Know-About-Marist-College-Before-You-Show-Up/ - My first day of college consisted of confusion, nervousness, and excitement. The combination of these three emotions, multiplied by thousands of other freshmen, was overwhelming (to say the least). But, from listening to our older brothers, sisters, and friends who had already made the departure to college years prior, we were ready or at least we thought we were. When touring Marist, our group leader showed us many of the beautiful facilities including the brand new cafeterias, libraries, dorms and laundry rooms.
