Joule Thief PLUS Crystal Radio Equals ???

What happens when you cross a Joule Thief with a Crystal Radio? Here it is. A free energy light? OK, it's not very bright, but it's a first attempt. Maybe I could charge a capacitor? Small battery? Operate a remote weather station? I wonder what other broadcast bands have to offer for power? NOTES: - I thought it would work better if I removed the earphone. It does not work at all. - Added big and small capacitors around the circuit to try to boost output = no improvement. - The joule thief coil is 11 turns main and 21 turns for transistor - The position of my hands and body influence the output. - It works better without a ground and just the antenna. Update: it can be made to work both with and without ground. See the next note. - I tried a 365 pF air cap to connect the ground and a small amount of capacitance between ground and radio helps noticeably. - An hour after I made the video I was showing an friend and it barely lit up. I originally suspected I was picking up AC interference from the house wire, but the brightness was clearly connected to the radio loudness and there was no significant interference. It could be as simple as the most powerful local station changing power levels at different times of the day. I've got a lot of trying to see what is going on. Update: it does change with the time of day. MATERIALS: - Joule Thief - Crystal Radio 20150798: update. It's been raining lately and I can only get the tiniest flicker from the JT. I suspect my antenna is wet / grounding when it rains. I think the antenna is very important. The 2nd experiment using an Infrared LED and Sensor to detect inputs on a Raspberry Pi, this time using interrupts in Python 3 with much faster / more reliable detection. Interrupts are interesting because it allows the Pi to carry on with 1 program while waiting for a real-time trigger to tell it to do something else immediately. It works until it is **interrupted** to perform a higher priority task. A relatively simple python program allows you to power the LED and use the photodiode to detect any interruption of the IR beam. Can be used for counting, detection of objects, location of moving parts, etc. MATERIALS - IR photodiode - IR LED - 330 ohm resistor x2 - 1M ohm resistor - Jumpers - Breadboard - Pi WARNING: Warning: mis-wiring or mis-programming your Pi or miswiring of accessories can ruin the Pi and accessories. Ground Rod, Stake or Post Driver Tool, DIY - Accessory

This tool is used with a hammer drill (wired or cordless) to drive stakes or rods into the ground. I use it primarily for driving electric ground rods. The last one I did was 3 meters long and took less than 3 minutes and did not bend nor mushroom the rod. It was also tight against a wall. Materials Used: - 1/2" steel pipe cap (soft steel better than cast). Do NOT use galvanized because of the toxic gases / poisoning that can result. - Old hammer drill bit or similar - Welding stuff The pipe cap is there to center the hammer drill over the rod, so any pipe or similar will work. Collectable Imco IFA Slide Sleeve Lighter or "trench lighter". This one is c 1927. 90 years old as of this year. The inscription is in script font = IFA (not "YFA" or "TFA") and it stands for "Imco Feuerzeuge Austria" ('Feuerzeuge' fire machine) IMCO started in 1907 as a button factory in Austria. They made their first wind-resistant trench lighters in 1918 from WWI scrap artillery shell casings. They were owned by Julius Meister & Company Vienna Austria. The company manufactured over 500,000,000 cigarette lighters. IMCO had the first wheel / flint cigarette lighter. In 1913 Ronson had a lighter that used a match-like striker. As of June 2012, IMCO went out of business.

A look inside & around a TukTuk 3 wheel taxi in Thailand. Most run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). For a while they looked like they were going extinct, but they've come roaring back. Literally. The poor man's taxi. The poor man's pickup truck. The poor man's second job:driving one. The let's-see-how-many-schoolgirls-we-can-pack-into-one-before-the-driver-says-no vehicle. Sure TukTuks are fun.... once. That's why you see so many white tourists in them. Because the locals aren't stupid enough to ride in a hot, dirty 3 wheeled motorcycle with no AC and pay 5x the regular taxi fare. Oh, and locals know that most of the "drivers" are either drunk or just learning to drive... or both. OK, bit of an exaggeration. Never ride one in the rain, unless your only alternative is walking (you'll be equally wet both ways, but at least your shoes won't be full of dirty water.) I've seen them new for 185k baht or roughly $6k USD and a good used for less than half that. How To Make A Crystal Radio - No Batteries, No External Power

How to make a robust crystal radio. DIY step by step. No special tools or skills needed. Most parts can be had from recycled things. The purchased parts run about $3. Good during power failures, when batteries are not available, for prepping and similar. Depending on your design (coil mostly) it can receive in the AM broadcast band, approximately 535 to 1700 kHz. See Warnings below. This one is loosely based on the Cub Scout / Wolf Scout / Boy Scout crystal radio design. OPERATION TIPS & TRICKS - A good antenna is important. Longer is usually better (see antenna warning below), a good ground is next most important. More below - With some stations, you can put a finger or 2 or 3 inside the tuner coil to improve reception. Move them around for best reception. - A finger near the coil can also improve reception. Touching the coil directly usually lowers sound volume, BUT a piece of paper or thin plastic between finger and coil often improves sound / tuning. Move finger around. - Touching different parts of the radio or getting near them can affect performance. TOOLS - Screw driver - Knife - Sandpaper (small piece, fine) - (Optional) Saw, if you do not have the wood & tube already cut - (Optional) Hand drill for screw holes - (Optional) Soldering iron, solder MATERIALS - 1 x Germanium Crystal Diode (1N34A)(bought: Amazon, Radio Shack 276-1123, Digikey, Jameco, Mouser...) - 1 x Resistor (10k ohm)(bought: ditto)(see note below) - 1 x Crystal earphone (can NOT be other type)(bought: Amazon, Jaycar, Jameco?) MUST be like the type in the video. Regular iPod or similar will NOT work. - 1 x Base 21 x 17.5 cms x 2 cms thick or more (wood scrap) - 1 x PVC pipe 15 cms long or stiff cardboard tube x 2.5 inch diameter - 1 x motorcycle / bicycle spoke, 2mm diameter or brass rod or stainless rod - Enameled bell wire (can be from old transformer, solenoid, ...) 0.3 to 1.5mm (note: I used 0.5mm or roughly 19-20 AWG, the number of turns and length of pipe change with wire size.) Bigger wire has lower resistance (better sound), BUT you get fewer turns per centimeter (less tuning). - Screws, stainless or brass (6 for wire hold downs, 2+ for coil mounting), - Fahnestock clips (6) (bought: Amazon & electrical shops). OR brass washers (13) (bought, hardware store) - 2 bigger washers for wiper. - 1 bigger, large head screw for wiper. ANTENNA & GROUND - The antenna is just a long piece of wire (I use scrap wire from old transformers, fluorescent light ballasts and such). The longer the better. - Try different lengths and orientations (vertical, horizontal) - A good ground helps. A wire to a ground rod is good. Metal water pipes also work well. NOTES: - I ran the calculations on the coil and with 2.25 inch tube and 170 turns it's about 425 micro Henries (but it varies up to 650 depending on whose calculator I use). That's a bit more than the typical design which runs about 350 - 400, but still very workable. It means you can get by with more like 150 turns of wire. - The resistor is necessary to get the best sound from these "new" crystal earphones. The new ones are piezoelectric and have lots of capacitance. Without the resistor the charge builds up then discharges so you get constant "static" sounds. The resistor bleeds off charge so you get louder, and much clearer sound. - Also called a foxhole radio. WARNINGS: - Never connect radio to any source of power. Not house current, nor batteries, nothing! - Never use the radio during lightning storms. - Never run an antenna over or near power lines. - Disconnect antenna when not in use. - Never ground to electrical items, plugs or similar. - If you don't know, don't do it. Crystal Radio, Capacitive Tuning - WORKS GREAT!

The BEST crystal radio I have used or built! This radio works very well. I've tried many crystal radio designs with variable capacitor tuning and none worked. (I've got a video on a failed one.) The starting point for this model came from a 1997 ARRL article (based on a design from the 1930's by Elmer G. Osterhoudt) and I've made changes in both parts and construction. This is now one of my 2 favorite crystal radios. The other is the modified Boy Scout radio. The BSA radio is simpler to construct, cheaper - requires only 2 purchased parts, easier to operate / tune, does not require a significant ground. It gives a loud output. On the downside selectivity is not good; weaker signals are often buried under crosstalk from stronger stations. The modified ARRL 1997 radio is more expensive, and more complex to build. It requires a good ground. Where this radio shines is in clarity of reception, i.e. selectivity - it tunes very precisely and even the weakest signals can be heard without crosstalk. The output is only slightly weaker than the BSA radio. Overall a very good radio. If you like radio and / or electronics, you might consider joining ARRL (Amateur Radio Relay League). www.arrl.org MATERIALS - 1N34a germanium diode (can NOT use substitutes) - Piezoelectric earphone (can NOT use substitutes) - 2 x 450 pF variable capacitors (can be air or mica types) - 10K ohm resistor (can vary to suit your radio) - Inductor: approx 146 microhenries. Core - 4 inch diameter PVC pipe. Wire - 32 turns, 35 feet (10.668 m) of 0.5mm diameter (23-24 wire gauge) enamel wire. 1.1 feet per turn. 1.1 feet = 33.582 cms. 35 feet = 10.668 meters. Circumference of 1.09 feet = diameter of 4.16349 inches. ANTENNA The best antenna would be 152.4m (500 feet) long. A "good" antenna would be 30.48m (100 feet). The video uses an antenna of only 12 meters (40 feet) and it works OK. WARNING - Never run antennas over or near power lines or electric wires. Serious injury or death may result. Bizarre stuff with a spinning magnetic field. Magnetized aluminum? You use it every day... Our lifetime experience tells us that aluminum and magnets do not attract. I knew theoretically this worked, but wanted to see it myself. It was still surprising. MATERIALS - The U-shaped piece of aluminum is molding / tack strip for flooring. - The magnet is from a AC desk fan. (Got it from a shop that repairs fans). - The v-block is the biggest chunk of aluminum I had around the house. It's used for drilling round stock (pipes and such). - The drill press is running at its lowest speed.

A few simple steps and you can avoid cross-threading or stripping screws. From tiny watch screws to big truck bolts, it will work for just about any type and in any material including steel, brass, plastic, wood, etc. This technique will preserve threads in things that are frequently disassembled or where conservation / preservation is important (antique / museum pieces). Excellent for plastics, brass and other soft materials where re-creating new threads each time can seriously weaken threads and lead to early, unnecessary failure.

New Crystal Radio Design

A different crystal radio and a comparison to the original "modified Boy Scout" radio I made earlier. Also a new (better) way to do the wiper. Depending on your design (coil mostly) it can receive in the AM broadcast band, approximately 535 to 1700 kHz. There is a similar design sold as a kit they call the "Pickard" however they include a capacitor across the antenna / ground leads which I found was no help. They also used a much higher value resistor which lowered the sound volume with my earphone. OPERATION TIPS & TRICKS - A good antenna is important. Longer is usually better (see antenna warning below), a good ground is next most important. For the video I used about 15 meters or 45 feet. More below - With some stations, you can put a finger or 2 or 3 inside the tuner coil to improve reception. Move them around for best reception. - A finger near the coil can also improve reception. Touching the coil directly usually lowers sound volume, BUT a piece of paper or thin plastic between finger and coil often improves sound / tuning. Move finger around. - Touching different parts of the radio or getting near them can affect performance. TOOLS - Screw driver - Knife - Sandpaper (small piece, fine) - (Optional) Saw, if you do not have the wood & tube already cut - (Optional) Hand drill for screw holes - (Optional) Soldering iron, solder MATERIALS - 1 x Germanium Crystal Diode (1N34A)(bought: Amazon, Radio Shack 276-1123, Digikey, Jameco, Mouser...) - 1 x Resistor (10k ohm)(bought: ditto)(see note below) - 1 x Crystal earphone (can NOT be other type)(bought: Amazon, Jaycar, Jameco?) MUST be like the type in the video. Regular iPod or similar will NOT work. - 1 x Base 21 x 17.5 cms x 2 cms thick or more (wood scrap) - 1 x PVC pipe 15 cms long or stiff cardboard tube x 2.5 inch diameter - 1 x motorcycle / bicycle spoke, 2mm diameter or brass rod or stainless rod - Wiper pylon: Wood block, carriage bolt (2.5"), spring, 3 stainless or brass washers, 2 screws to attach block. - Enameled bell wire (can be from old transformer, solenoid, ...) 0.3 to 1.5mm (note: I used 0.5mm or roughly 19-20 AWG, the number of turns and length of pipe change with wire size.) Bigger wire has lower resistance (better sound), BUT you get fewer turns per centimeter (less tuning). - Screws, stainless or brass (6 for wire hold downs, 2+ for coil mounting), - Fahnestock clips (2) (bought: Amazon & electrical shops). OR brass washers (13) (bought, hardware store) ANTENNA & GROUND - The antenna is just a long piece of wire (I use scrap wire from old transformers, fluorescent light ballasts and such). The longer the better. - Try different lengths and orientations (vertical, horizontal) - A good ground helps. A wire to a ground rod is good. Metal water pipes also work well. NOTES: - The modified Boy Scout radio has about 170 turns, this new design has 138 turns. - The resistor is necessary to get the best sound from these "new" crystal earphones. The new ones are piezoelectric and have lots of capacitance. Without the resistor the charge builds up then discharges so you get constant "static" sounds. The resistor bleeds off charge so you get louder, and much clearer sound. - Also called a foxhole radio. WARNINGS: - Never connect radio to any source of power. Not house current, nor batteries, nothing! - Never use the radio during lightning storms. - Never run an antenna over or near power lines. - Disconnect antenna when not in use. - Never ground to electrical items, plugs or similar. - If you don't know, don't do it. Joule Thief, No Toroid Coil - How to Build

How to build a "no coil" Joule Thief. Fewer parts, small size., no coil to wind. Most of these parts can be found in broken routers, radios, etc. Solid state Joule Thief. It was powered by a weak / dying rechargeable battery at around 1 volt. MATERIALS - Transistor (2n2222 or equivalent) - 2x surface mount inductors (4 x 1.5 x 1 mm approx) - LED If you can't tell the difference between a surface mount inductor and capacitor you should be able to use a volt meter set on resistance (ohms). An inductor should show a steady reading. A capacitor should show a brief reading then settle down to near zero. NOTE: a resistor on the base (center connection) was not used and is probably not needed for smaller inductors. UPDATES: 20151227: Quit working. Looks like the transistor quit because I can get the LED to light by tapping the battery on the lead. I have 2 guesses: 1) I used too much voltage at some point; or 2) the flyback from the inductors exceeded the base voltage max. In the first case I need to avoid doing stupid things. In the second I will need to add a (surface mount) resistor at the base. If you do not know soldering safety, learn it or don't solder. - Never solder live circuits of any type. - Soldering house wiring, power wiring, etc. is outside the scope of this video. That should be left to professionals only. - Electricity can cause damage, fires, burns and death. The roof tank water system will work in areas where there are no hard freezes. To date I have never had to use the AC mains powered pump to compensate for a lack of sunlight. It runs on cloudy days and only stops only during the most violent parts of storms. DIY Wonder Wrench / Super Spanner - Stick Welding Project - Weekend Welding Warrior

Needed a 6 sided megawrench for a 4 inch pipe cap. Stores were closed (and I doubt they would have one anyway). Decided to make one. It's made from 1.8mm (5/64") roof tile straps. 2 pieces 4" long on each side. The last side has a 6mm thick piece where a handle could be welded (I used a 3/4 drive socket from an old extension. You could use a horizontal pipe fitting or piece of pipe as a place to attach a handle.). I tack welded using 2 mm rod at 30 amps (yes, that is too high, but I could not afford to have the rod stick). Finished off the corners with 2.6 mm (1/8") rod at 35 amps. The rules of engagement on this job were: 1) Could not take all day 2) Stores were closed so I had to use what I had 3) Could not damage the plastic end cap. It was a special order, cost a lot and the stores were closed anyway. This technique could be used to make much bigger wrenches / spanners for things like pipe caps. Materials Used: - 1.8mm (5/64 inch) steel flat stock. For this wrench they were cut to 4 inches (10 cms) and excess cut off after tack welding. - 6 mm steel (T shaped to hold handle mount) - Square drove end from ratchet extension (the extension is the "point" on my post hole auger). This can also be a piece of pipe mounted to insert a bar handle or such. WARNING: The video depicts acts and work that, if done wrong or used improperly, can lead to injury or death. Building movement has opened a space between 2 townhouses allowing rats to move from one to the next. This is 1 method I have used before to block their run-ways. These buildings are still moving so patching the crack with cement would only be only temporary until the buildings moves more and broke the cement (again). NOTE: Foam alone will not work. Rats chew through it quickly. They can also eat through lightweight wire given enough time. Heavier wire is better. MATERIALS - Construction / insulating foam, spray - Wire mesh. Heavier is better, but harder to bend. Expanded metal lath is really good, but harder to work into place.

I was watching a guy repair a wooden boat on a beach in Thailand one day. He had some glue and a thin rope he was stuffing into the spaces between the slats. When the 25 year old wooden doors in our house started to dry out and crack. I tried caulking and such, but it did not last long and popped out. I decided to try the boat repairman's technique and it works very well. In 6 years only one crack has had to be redone. When the seed is mature, turns brownish and dries out, a few seconds soaking in water causes the seed pod to burst open flinging seeds in all direction. Its names Popping Pod, Duppy Gun and Cracker Plant come from the fact that children like to play with the dry pods that pop when rubbed with spit or water.[4] In animal models, this plant has antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties.[5] In folk medicine[6] and Ayurvedic medicine[7] it has been used as a diuretic, anti-diabetic, antipyretic, analgesic, antihypertensive, gastroprotective, and to treat gonorrhea.[8] It is also used as a natural dye for textiles.[9] Some butterfly species, like the Lemon Pansy (Junonia lemonias) and the Mangrove Buckeye (Junonia genoveva), feed on the leaves of Ruellia tuberosa.
