Don Hayter's MGB Story MG Abingdon design office #MGB50

09:01
Don Hayter's MGB Story - The birth of the MGB in MG's Abingdon Design & Development Office (Those were the days ... series) by Don Hayter. More info: http://www.veloce.co.uk/shop/products/productDetail.php?prod_id=V4460&prod_group=Cars%20Vans%20&%20Trucks& Published September 2012 by Veloce. ISBN: 978-1-845844-60-8 This is the inside story of the MG Design office, from 1956 until its closure in 1980. Explaining how the various models were drawn, planned, and developed by the small team of engineers, it also shows how the input and control changed from Morris, Wolseley, Riley Group, Austin-Morris, and Austin Rover. The effects of the Triumph-Austin merger are detailed in model changes, alongside the effects of safety legislation, mainly imposed by the United States. Trying to remain as individual as possible during this period, MG developed record breakers and a unique Competition Department. Special cars were built and tested, and prototypes for the MGB replacement were drawn up -- all in parallel with the development of MG production cars using engines from any part of the BMC company. The continuing support of the American market was essential and much valued, but the company's market support prioritised the TR7 -- a decision that, ultimately, led to the closure of a successful, happy company. Don Hayter was educated at Abingdon School, Oxford, winning the Bennett Scholarship to Pembroke College. With the outbreak of WWII he decided to take an apprenticeship in aircraft design at the Pressed Steel Company, Cowley. Attending Oxford Technical College, and attaining a Higher National Certificate in Metallurgy and Engineering, he worked at various aircraft manufacturers, before moving into the car industry after the war. Working on many cars, including the MG Magnette, in 1954 he moved to Aston Martin, working on the design for the DB2/4 and the Lagonda, before moving back to MG's Design & Development department. Promoted to Chief Design & Development Engineer in 1973, he was responsible for the design of the MGB body, and stayed with MG until the closure of its factory in 1980. Don remains passionately enthusiastic about this iconic car, and still runs one himself today.

Porsche 924 Carrera – Roy Smith & Derek Bell interview (full-length)

12:55
The full story of the Porsche 924 Carrera’s evolution to excellence by award winning motoring writer Roy Smith. Forewords by Norbert Singer, Jürgen Barth & Derek Bell. The brand new book available here: http://bit.ly/924Carrera This is the story of an incredible and very rare car. Road tests examined the 210bhp, 150mph road car’s performance, magazines hailed it as one of the greatest Porsche ‘specials,’ and rumour says that the last front-engined models could have threatened the sales of Porsche’s flagship 911, causing the front engined 968 model to be ‘killed off.’ From its early conceptual phase and the 924 Rallye Turbo of 1979, to the prototype 924 GTR/P that tested at the Paul Ricard Circuit and went on to place sixth at Le Mans in 1980, this book records the model’s evolution to excellence, based on extensive research in Porsche AG’s own archives. It covers the 406 Homologation models, built to qualify for Le Mans, and the 59 very special competition models, as well as the 17 GTR racing models. With race details covering Europe and the USA, from the Sports Car Club of America production D racers, to the GTO and Trans Am class 924 GTRs of the mid-80s, this is the first time that the full history of this rare supercar has been told.

First Principles – The Official Biography of Keith Duckworth OBE – Norman Burr interview

06:17
Order your copy here: http://bit.ly/First-Principles The names 'Keith Duckworth' and 'DFV' are practically synonymous, such is the reputation of the famous F1 racing engine which he designed. Whilst there are books covering the technical aspects of the DFV engine, and other designs from Cosworth, the company which he founded with Mike Costin, there are many gaps in the story of Duckworth's career, before and after Cosworth. This book comprehensively fills those gaps, taking the reader into the world of Britain's finest 20th century engineers. It was a world consisting of far more than motorsport, embracing an astonishing variety of mechnical devices, including aircraft, boats, and motorcycles – particularly Triumph, for whom he was a consultant during his retirement. A man of strong convictions and high integrity, Keith Duckworth OBE cared passionately about his work, fitting almost every aspect of his life around it. His northern industrial roots, the ups and downs of his personal life, his health problems, and his generous support of charities and business start-ups, combine to create the story of one of motorsport's – and engineering's – most endearing and enduring characters.

For 25 years, the full story behind the collection and its fate has remained untold ... until now. Say 'Sleeping Beauties' to committed car enthusiasts and they will immediately know what you're talking about: a world famous 1980s photo series, showing an extraordinary collection of classical automobiles rusting away in a French barn, neglected by their owner. Famous brands like Bugatti, Lancia, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Cord and Aston Martin, laying under thick layers of dust, spending their remaining days falling apart in isolation. Many have tried to find out what happened to these cars over the last twenty-five years -- decayed? destroyed? sold? -- but all leads fizzled out ... until two Dutchmen and a German hung on where others had given up. In true Boy's Own style, their book tells of the three-year-long search for the fate of the cars from that French barn. It tells the story behind the collection's origins in 1948, through the moment in 1983 when the famous photos were published, up to the day in 2007 when the authors talked to the current 79 year old owner -- a man who finally broke his silence about the fate of his collection for the first time in 25 years.

The Real Way Round - 1 year, 1 motorcycle, 1 man, 6 continents, 35 countries, 42,000 miles, 9 oil changes, 3 sets of tyres, and loads more ... by Jonathan Yates. Published June 2013 by Veloce. More info: http://bit.ly/SHy4tx This is a pictorial diary of a once-in-a-lifetime motorbike trip across 35 countries on a Yamaha Ténéré XT660, and a practical guide to motorcycling round the world -- what to do first, what to plan for, and how to cope with the unexpected. Features stunning photography, details of bike modifications, route maps, points of interest, and practical guidance on freighting your bike. Jonathan Yates has always been a keen traveller, backpacking Australia and Asia immediately after graduating from university. His father's motorcycling exploits on a BSA Bantam back in the '60s left a lasting impression, encouraging him to finally pass his bike test in 1999. The combination of wanderlust and a motorcycle licence proved a great temptation. Jonathan soon part-exchanged his Yamaha Fazer for a Ténéré, and the trip was on. He left the UK on the Eurostar, riding east to Beijing before continuing through South East Asia, Australia and the Americas during a one-year sabbatical. This book details how to organise such a trip, and features a series of daily photographs capturing Jonathan's own experiences on his amazing journey.

Harnessing Horsepower - The Pat Moss Carlsson story (Veloce). Stuart Turner & Sir Stirling Moss OBE

08:25
Interview with Sir Stirling Moss OBE at Goodwood Revival 2010 & Stuart Turner at Veloce House 2010. More info about the book: http://www.veloce.co.uk/shop/products/productDetail.php?prod_id=V4306&prod_group=Reference%20&%20Biography& The book covers the life of one of the greatest women rally drivers of all time: Pat Moss Carlsson. Pat had a highly successful show-jumping career before moving into motorsport, going on to become European Ladies Rally Champion no fewer than five times. In 1960, with her co-driver Ann Wisdom, she won the Liège, the toughest rally of all, a win as iconic in motorsport terms as her brother Stirling's famous one on the Mille Miglia. Stuart Turner is uniquely qualified to write about Pat because he not only navigated for her on British rallies -- they took the first win by a Mini together -- but was then her team manager at BMC. Pat later moved from BMC to Ford before having a successful rally programme with Saab, competing in the same team as her husband, Erik Carlsson. She also drove Renault Alpine, Lancia and Toyota rally cars before retiring in 1974, going on to help her daughter Suzy with her show-jumping career. Pat never lost her zest for life, and was once even stopped for speeding ... while towing a horse box. Featuring 150 evocative pictures, this is an intimate and unique account of one of motorsport's most formidable women. Stuart Turner has enjoyed a lifelong involvement in motorsport, both as competitor and team manager. After becoming British Champion navigator, he went on to manage the BMC Competitions Department when Mini Coopers were winning Monte Carlo rallies, and later Ford Motorsport when the Escort reigned supreme in rallies. He is now the Chief Executive of the Motorsport Safety Fund, which produces safety training material to help the sport. In 2009, Stuart received the Prince Michael Award of Merit, the Motor Sport Association's most prestigious award for services to British motorsport. Stuart is uniquely qualified to write a book about Pat Moss Carlsson, because he not only navigated for her on British rallies, but was then her team manager at BMC. He also rallied with Pat's husband, the legendary Erik Carlsson, with whom he won the RAC Rally. Interview with John Rosamond - Author of Save the Triumph Bonneville!

05:59
Save the Triumph Bonneville! The inside story of the Meriden Workers Co-op by John Rosamond. Foreword by The Right Honourable Tony Benn. There is no more famous motorcycle than the Triumph Bonneville, the Bonnie, "the best motorcycle in the world," and the Meriden factory producing this icon was a personal Mecca to fans of the marque. Film stars such as Steve McQueen visited Meriden for their Triumphs. But on the brink of what should have been its biggest ever sales season, the BSA parent company dramatically collapsed. The Conservative government reacted, and Norton-Villiers-Triumph was created. The new owners decided to close down Meriden ... so the workers locked them out. There followed protracted political negotiations, affected all the while by national government changes, ministers attitudes, national and international economic conditions and, throughout all this, the world's continuing desire for the Triumph. As much a study of changing sociopolitical attitudes as of an economically traumatic time for both Triumph and the country, socialist John Rosamond's unique position within the workers co-operative makes this work a fascinating account of a story never before told from the inside. The reversal of his role from worker to chairman brought with it new responsibilities, bringing home to him the passion that employees, customers and dealers had for Triumph, and how that could keep Meriden from closing and the Bonneville in production. During all these desperate struggles, the Triumph Bonneville became the best-selling motorcycle of its class, winning the coveted Motor Cycle News Motorcycle of The Year award at the end of the seventies. Yet within just a few years of this, Meriden and the Bonnie were finally gone. All the rescue attempts, the lifesaving international orders, and the negotiations for a reprieve with the new Thatcher government are covered here in unique detail, as is the introduction of new models that Meriden hoped would attract a 'white knight'. Lavishly illustrated with never-before-seen photographs from the personal collections of the factory's workers, this inside-story of Triumph's last years at Meriden is the definitive history of the most famous of the Tony Benn worker's co-operatives. Amédée Gordini - 'Le Sorcier' lives on ... Roy Smith interview

10:01
Amédée Gordini - a true racing legend by Roy Smith. Published April 2013 by Veloce Publishing Ltd. More info about the book: http://www.veloce.co.uk/shop/products/productDetail.php?prod_id=V4317&prod_group=Motorsport& Forewords by José Froilán González, Sir Stirling Moss OBE & Christian Huet. This is the story of a man, a team, and their life and times, as well as a complete record of all their achievements and failures. It logs the financial and personal cost of racing in the prewar and postwar periods. It tells of how the mighty car company Renault became involved with them in the late 1950s, and how Amedee Gordini became known throughout the world as one of the greatest engine tuners of his time. This is a story of excitement, laughs, astonishment and anger -- a story of the determination of a man with a dream and a passion for motor racing in the big leagues. It is the first time that the history of the always under-financed Gordini racing team has been documented in English, and the first complete story of Gordini himself in any language. This volume will appeal to new enthusiasts and old hands of Formula 1 and sports prototypes, especially those who have owned a Gordini engined-car. It charts Gordini's early life and beginnings in motorsport, up to 1969 when Renault took over the Gordini company, keeping his name on all the racing engines until 1986, before finally resurrecting it for a performance version of the Renault Twingo and Clio in 2009. The book is packed with evocative period images from important collections, supplementary transcripts in English from many contemporary interviews, plus recollections from former employees remembering their time working with Gordini, and an exhaustive set of statistics. All the way it's a roller coaster of joy, despair, humour, and stunning images. The racing legend of 'Le Sorcier' lives on. Roy Smith is a retired company director, now an award winning writer. His lifetime passion for motorsport began in the 1960s with articles for club magazines, mainly interviews with notables of the time. A 40-year business career in sales and marketing developed an attention to detail, crucial to writing a work such as 'Amedee Gordini' and his previous works about the development of the first turbo Formula 1 car, and two books covering the complete history of the Alpine Renault sports prototypes, for which he won the Guild of Motoring Writers Mercedes Benz Prize and the Montagu of Beaulieu Trophy in 2010. His aim is always to record a little known part of motoring history for future generations, before it is forgotten. Once again Roy has written a 'first in English' story, with the same desire to provide a good read to newcomers and hardened enthusiasts alike. He has written many specialist articles for magazines in France, and internationally as a UK historic correspondent. He is already planning his next work, which will, again, be published by Veloce in 2013: this too will be a 'first in English,' entitled 'Alpine Renault - The Fabulous Berlinettes.' http://www.veloce.co.uk/shop/products/productDetail.php?prod_id=V4317&prod_group=Motorsport&

Lotus 18 – Colin Chapman's U-turn

03:22
The first rear-engined Lotus racer! Charts the Lotus 18’s development and competition history, from its inception, up to 1966, via sensational victories over Ferrari at Monaco and the Nürburgring. http://bit.ly/Lotus18 Mark Whitelock’s enthusiasm for motor sport started in 1957, when his father took him to Goodwood. On Easter Monday 1960, he was at Goodwood again, cheering Innes Ireland and the Lotus 18 to victory over Stirling Moss, giving him a special affinity with both that car, and that driver. By the early ’90s, disillusioned with contemporary Grand Prix racing, Mark turned his attention to historic racing and cars, and became an early supporter of the return of motor sport to the Goodwood circuit. Mark retired from a career in banking in 1999, and took up writing for pleasure.

Graham Robson interview – The Daily Mirror 1970 World Cup Rally 40 (Veloce)

09:10
The Daily Mirror World Cup Rally 40 -- The World's Toughest Rally in Retrospect by Graham Robson. More info about the book: http://bit.ly/UwWyvH After the first ever intercontinental rally the London-Sydney in 1968 there was widespread enthusiasm for an even more difficult test. With the Football World Cup being held in Mexico in 1970, it was the perfect opportunity to hold a parallel, much tougher challenge the World Cup Rally. Organisers John Sprinzel and John Brown secured sponsorship from the Daily Mirror and planned a unique high-speed event, lasting six weeks and covering 16,000 miles from London to Mexico City via some of the most varying, tortuous and difficult terrain on three continents. Serious works teams such as Ford and British Leyland spent tremendous amounts choosing and developing new cars, completing months-long route surveys, and analysing every detail of diets, oxygen provision, and the number of crew members. Despite all this planning, out of an entry of more than 100, only 23 cars made it to the finish. It was then, and remains now, the toughest rally of all time.

Barrie Down Interview. Art Deco and British Car Design (Veloce)

09:14
UPDATE! Now available in paperback! http://bit.ly/NaKgAs This is a book about automotive styling, in particular the streamlined styling that defined what are now known as Airline cars. During the mid-1930s the majority of British car manufacturers and coachbuilders experimented with streamlined styling. This fashion was the result of Art Deco, an international movement that influenced design and marketing in many different industries, and produced some of the most unique and visually exhilarating cars ever produced in Britain. Part One of the book explains and illustrates the Art Deco styling elements that link these streamlined car designs, and describes their development, their commonality, and their unique aeronautical names. The stories of the individual cars, their designers, and their development, are told in Part Two. Here, Barrie Down has collected examples of all the significant British streamlined production cars made between 1933 and 1936, many of them still represented by beautifully restored survivors. The book is well illustrated with over 200 contemporary pictures and colour photographs of existing cars, many of which have never before been published. This book is an instructive and visual feast for all car lovers. Barrie Down has had a fascination with cars from as long ago as he can remember, and his childhood drawings were almost exclusively cars, cars, and more cars. Those he owned as an impecunious bachelor were from the 1920s and '30s, from which he gained a healthy respect for the design and quality of vintage and thoroughbred cars. After emigrating to Canada in 1964, he spent over 20 years in the industrial design field, concerned primarily with transportation design. From his art historian wife, he learned to link design and social history, and discovered that the design of the cars he loved were strongly influenced by Art Deco.

Bonjour! Is this Italy? A Hapless Biker's Guide to Europe. Kevin Turner author interview

07:37
Bonjour! Is this Italy? - A Hapless Biker's Guide to Europe by Kevin Turner. More info about the book: http://bit.ly/J4YG3d ISBN: 978-1-845843-99-1 Following his dismissal from a job he never should have had, the author packs a tent, some snacks, and a suit, and sets out on a two-wheeled adventure across Europe. With no idea where he's going, and only two very large and confusing maps to rely on, he heads out to prove that planning and forethought are the very antithesis of a motorcycle adventure. Is This Italy? offers a unique and often hilarious insight into the challenges and excitement afforded by a lone motorcycle journey though Europe. In his quest to escape the frantic nature of London life, Kevin Turner heads south across France, crossing the Alps into Italy, and onto Rome, before returning via Germany -- and the treacherous Nürburgring -- in the hope of rendezvousing with the beautiful Nina. Throughout, the author provides valuable advice to those considering a similar journey, noting the best and most scenic routes, where to stay, and what to see. This is interspersed with a raft of comic anecdotes that demonstrate exactly what NOT to do when lost on a motorbike in Europe.

Tatra – The Legacy of Hans Ledwinka – Ivan Margolius interview

05:43
Hans Ledwinka’s innovative Tatra cars were models of design excellence: this book, at long last, places Ledwinka in his well-deserved place amongst the great car designers. More info about the book here: http://bit.ly/-Tatra Tatra – The Legacy of Hans Ledwinka is the story of the Tatra company, which originated in the Central European country of Czechoslovakia. It is a tale of great innovation and avant-garde design in automobile engineering. It is also the story of one man – Hans Ledwinka – and his visionary concepts which have become highly influential, although often undervalued, contributions to the development of car technology. Until now, Hans Ledwinka's talent has hardly been recognised; in retrospect, he can be judged equal to car designers such as Benz, Daimler and Porsche, whose endeavours have been fully recorded many times over. With his revolutionary Tatra cars Ledwinka consistently pushed back the frontiers of automobile construction, and it’s certain that without his inspiration, the Volkswagen in its air-cooled rear-engined form would perhaps never have been conceived. This book suggests that Ledwinka played a greater part in this development than has previously been appreciated. The authors have covered the full history of the Tatra company, which is one of the oldest factories in continuous automobile manufacture, dating back to the 19th century. By doing this, they have placed both Ledwinka and the Czechoslovak Tatra company in their rightful place in the history of car design, and provided a fully comprehensive assessment of the influence of Tatra car designs and their inspired creator. The text of this larger format 2nd edition has been fully revised and updated since the 1990 edition. This new edition also contains many additional illustrations. The book also has a new foreword, written by Norman Foster, the British architect, and proud owner of a Tatra T87, who pays tribute to the aesthetic qualities of this design classic and captures the fascination of both designers and motor historians with the development of Tatra. Ivan Margolius is an author of memoirs and a number of books and articles on art, architecture, engineering, design and automobile history. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, where he studied architecture, he moved to London in 1966, where he practised at Foster and Partners, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and Yorke Rosenberg Mardall. His interest in Czech politics, history, technology and design spurred on his publishing ventures. Ivan has been the owner of a 1949 Tatra T600 Tatraplan since 2000.

Racing Line – British motorcycle racing in the golden age of the big single

05:03
Racing Line is the story of big-bike racing in Britain during the 1960s – when the British racing single reached its peak; when exciting racing unfolded at circuits across the land every summer; and when Britain took its last great generation of riding talent and engineering skill to the world. More info: http://bit.ly/RacingLine ABOUT THE AUTHOR The sight and sound of an MV-mounted John Surtees in action, at Silverstone in the late ’50s, set Bob Guntrip on course for a lifetime spent on and around motorcycles. A career in journalism led to stints on bike magazines in the UK and Australia, firing the passion still further, and, despite later wanderings into cricket, rugby and science writing, it seemed inevitable that Bob would one day return to his first love. The result is Racing Line, his first book, documenting the excitement of the 1960s, one of the most dramatic decades in the history of British motorcycle sport.

Jeroen Booij author of Maximum Mini at MINI United 2009 Silverstone

04:25
http://www.velocebooks.com Maximum Mini The essential book of cars based on the original Mini by Jeroen Booij. This is the first book to focus solely on the cars derived from the classic Mini. Small GTs, sports cars, roadsters and fun cars: Mini derivatives made the specialist motoring market roar in the sixties, but after that they didnt fade away. The seventies, eighties, and nineties saw new variants on the car that simply wouldnt die some genius, some crazy, but always out of the ordinary and colorful. From the well known Mini Marcos and Unipower GT that even raced at Le Mans, to the very obscure but at least as exciting Coldwell GT or Sarcon Scarab, almost 60 cars are thoroughly researched, described and photographed. Many of the people originally involved with designing and building them were interviewed, and some cars that were thought to be long gone were found during the researching of this book. Others werent, but nevertheless made it in as old material came to light. Of the over 500 pictures in this book, most have never been seen in print before. Just like the enthusiasm needed to build the cars described, this book has been written with a true passion.
