High School Students Get Hands-On Experience at UNR Med

01:02
More than 80 high school juniors and seniors from Incline Village, North Lake Tahoe and Truckee visited the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Thursday, June 7, where they did something extraordinary: Donning surgical masks and scrubs, they assisted in a full knee replacement surgery on a cadaver. Many of the students are enrolled in advanced-placement biology classes and have expressed an interest in medical careers, so getting hands-on experience in the UNR Med anatomy lab gave them a great preview of what their futures could be as medical students. Following the lab experience, UNR Med faculty answered questions and detailed the many possibilities a career in medicine offers, from an M.D. degree and PA programs to nursing and more. With these students leading the way, the future of medicine in Nevada is bright! #UNRMed50 #AHealthyNevada

ED cell rotation

The Yan Lab at UNR Med, led by professor Wei Yan, M.D., Ph.D., AAAS Fellow, department of physiology and cell biology, is researching sperm transportation and has revealed a new cause of male infertility. The Yan research team, along with other international collaborators, has found that eyelash-like extensions of specific epithelial cells called motile cilia in the male reproductive tract beat with continual changes in direction. If cilia stop beating, sperm will accumulate into clumps that block the efferent ducts. As a result, fluids build up, causing testicular damage and male infertility. These findings correct a 150-year-old wrong concept regarding sperm transport and could lead to new treatment for male infertility.
