Open World: The Open Sourcing of Everything
Essentially, open source software is software that allows users to inspect, change and share the source code of the program. Instead of passive consumers of a program, users become part of a community to which they can choose to contribute if they are capable and inclined. The difference from everyday consumer culture, where shoppers simply line up to buy products that are already in their final form, and it is almost never expected that shoppers will actually try to open up or modify those products. Find out more about the open source idea and how it is transforming human interaction in this week's GRTV Backgrounder.

Corbett: Flying Towards War? Drone Race Signals Escalationin China-Japan Standoff
The development and acquisition of drones has become crucial to the ever-expanding arms race between China and Japan, as tensions over disputed islands in the East China Sea could soon reach boiling point. Weaknesses in Japan's surveillance capability and the ongoing territorial dispute over the Senkaku islands, known as the Diaoyu in China, have spurred Tokyo to purchase an advanced drone model from the US. Japan's vulnerability was highlighted late last year when Japanese radar failed to detect a low-flying Chinese aircraft passing over the group of disputed islands. The drones will seemingly be deployed "to counter China's growing assertiveness at sea, especially when it comes to the Senkaku islands," the Kyodo news agency quoted an unnamed defense ministry official as saying. Japanese concerns that the islands will be used by China as a prelude to testing regional power balances, prompted Japan's Defense Ministry to request $2.4 billion dollars from hawkish Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose conservative government swept to power on December 26. The funds will be used for extra PAC-3 missile interceptors and upgrades for F-15 fighter planes, Bloomberg cites a document distributed by the ministry as saying. Japan has further decided to increase overall defense spending to some $54.3 billion, the first defense hike in a decade. Abe further promised on the campaign trail to bulk up the country's army and coast guard. James Corbett, editor of the Japanese-based Corbett Report news website, told RT the latest conflict had yet to filter down to the citizen level in Japan like it had in China, where nationalistic sentiment is on the rise. With the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands serving as the focal point for the current standoff, Corbett says Sino-Japanese military conflict will likely become the new norm. "...now that Abe is in power -- he's known as a hardline nationalist -- and now that Xi JinPing is taking the helm of China for the next 10 years, I think he's looking to put his stake down as someone who is really a strong defender of China. So I think we're really going to see an entrenched position on both sides and it looks like there is a new normal of wars and increasing [military] expenditures that are likely for the next several years." China has taken measures to significantly ratchet up its drone program in a move which US analysts described as a "worrisome trend." In October Chinese state media said 11 drone bases would be built along China's coastline, and "at least one drone will be stationed at each base," the Guardian cites China Radio International as reporting. China rolled out eight new models in November at an annual air show in the southern coastal city of Zhuhai, photographs of which were featured prominently in the state-owned media. In December it was further announced that the People's Liberation Army were readying to test-fly a domestically developed drone, which analysts said is likely a clone of the US's carrier-based X-47B. The unclassified document published by the US Defense Science Board in July outlined fears China "could easily match or outpace US spending on unmanned systems." Sino-Japanese relations took a drastic turn for the worse after the Japanese government purchased the disputed islands from a private Japanese owner last September. Tensions have continued to rise, as an increasingly frequent cat and mouse came between Chinese surveillance planes and Japanese F015 fighters risks descending into a potentially deadly game of brinkmanship. Chinese government ships have entered Japanese-controlled waters on multiple occasions in recent months, prompting regular standoffs with the Japanese coast guard. On Tuesday Japan summoned China's ambassador to Tokyo to protest an incursion by 4 Chinese maritime surveillance ships, allegedly occurring Monday. China remained undaunted, with Reuters quoting the Communist Party chief of China's marine surveillance corps, Sun Shuxian, as saying "Japan has continued to ignore our warnings that their vessels and aircraft have infringed our sovereignty." "This behavior may result in the further escalation of the situation at sea and has prompted China to pay great attention and vigilance." Nuclear Danger: World Action Now on Fukushima
Journalist, author, activist and historian Harvey Wasserman has been reporting on, and participating in, the nuclear free movement for decades. In that time, by his judgment, only one other event matches the danger to the world posed by the Cuban Missile Crisis. That event is the ongoing nuclear disaster at Fukushima. Haven't heard about it in the corporate media? That's because the deadly and dying global nuclear industry and its allies don't want you to know. That's why he has organized a petition drive to the UN advocating international expert oversight of, and participation in, management of the Fukushima crisis. In this interview, he explains why we must all be involved in this world-historical challenge to human and planetary survival. Syria is NOT a Civil War, It Is a Foreign Intervention
Syria is entering a new stage of secular-on-extremist violence, with the collective war against President Assad almost sidelined by the growing mayhem. Outside plans for chaos have begun uncontrollably to shift the war, according to a number of experts. Analyst and editor of the Corbett Report, James Corbett, feels it important to emphasize the gap between the motives displayed by various factions inside Syria and the initial aim of external powers to remove Assad. This view is furthered by professor of international relations Mark Almond, who believes that a diffuse groupings all dangerously seeking personal gain may put disarmament process off the rails. On one hand, the Syrian conflict is seen as painstakingly planned and funded chaos from outside in Corbett's view. On the other are several civil wars within the main struggle, which are prone to constant shifts in allegiances due to the aforementioned chaos, according to Almond. Money Is Not Safe In The Big Banks
People think that money is safe in the big banks because the FDIC will protect the deposits. This assumption is not based on the facts. This video will show official government documents that describe the plans for confiscating deposits when, (not if) a big bank fails. Individual, as well as public funds from municipal, university, county deposits are at serious risk. YOUR taxpayer money will disappear in the next crisis! Public officials in charge of taxpayer funds need to be aware of the dangers here. The loss of taxpayer funds and the inability to meet payrolls and obligations will certainly prompt a response that will both immediate and forceful. This video may be useful to present to public officials to inform them of the dangers of losing public funds under their care. Inside Syria: Britain Violates Own Anti-Terrorist Legislation: Michel Chossudovsky
Press TV has conducted an interview with Michel Chossudovsky, Centre for Research on Globalization (www.globalresearch.ca) from Montreal about Britain's recent announcement that the al-Nusra Front group in Syria as an al-Qaeda terrorist group. The following is an approximate transcript of the interview. Press TV: Looking at how Britain is calling al-Nusra Front nothing but another name for al-Qaeda, one has to ask what took them so long to recognize this? Chossudovsky: This is a very important question. I should mention that the United States had already put al-Nusra on the State Department list. The United Nations Security Council of which Britain is a member has al-Nusra on their terrorist list. So in effect I think that Britain is simply towing the line in putting this terrorist organization on the blacklist while at the same time supporting them covertly in violation of their own anti-terrorist legislation. This is true for Britain, but it's also true for the United States and several other countries, which openly support the al-Nusra affiliate to al-Qaeda via the so-called Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army. Press TV: That's an interesting point you raised there because even though al-Nusra Front is on multiple terrorist lists by these Western governments they are still continuing to support, fund, send arms and other equipment to the insurgents fighting against President Bashar al-Assad's government and they have no idea whose hands these arms are falling into. Of course al-Nusra Front is getting these arms, it is getting the equipment and it is getting the funding. Chossudovsky: They know in whose hands these weapons fall because al-Nusra is the only relevant military or entity, paramilitary entity in Syria, which is currently fighting government forces. So, in effect, all or most of the military aid from US and allied forces including the United Kingdom is in fact channeled through the Supreme Military Council to al-Nusra. And I should mention also that al-Nusra is being trained in the use of chemical weapons and in fact that training is often entrusted to private security companies - in other words mercenary companies and British mercenary companies. Now... there is another dimension to this release concerning al-Nusra by the British authorities. In a ceremony, which took place I believe yesterday when the Chief of Staff General Sir David Richards took leave of the armed forces he emphasized that Britain should not only continue to support the rebels - in fact what he meant by that, but he didn't say it explicitly, al-Qaeda rebels - but at the same time General Sir David Richards emphasized that a 'no-fly zone' was not enough and what should be contemplated is an all-out ground war imply in effect an illegal land invasion of a sovereign country. He was very explicit on that, he said we should support the rebels, but we should also send in ground forces into Syria. Whether this is his personal position or whether this is actually the position of Britain's top military brass remains to be established. But it suggests that the UK must be prepared to go to war with Syria in violation of international law not only by supporting an illegal terrorist organization namely al-Nusra, but also contemplating actions, which would imply sending in ground forces in support of the alliance's foot soldiers al-Nusra, which are trained and financed out of Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The West is the Architect of Terrorism in Syria
Press TV has conducted an interview with Michel Chossudovsky of the Centre for Research on Globalization in Montreal about the issue of the Western proxy war in Syria and the fresh advances being made by the army of the Syrian government in its fight against insurgents backed by the West, Israel and some Persian Gulf states. The following is an approximate transcript of the interview, which appears on video after a short Press TV interview with retired Lebanese army general, Hisham Jaber. Press TV: How do you see the situation in Syria? Which side has the upper hand? Chossudovsky: It appears from the reports that the insurgency has been defeated. This is something we've known for quite some time. It's been a progressive and continuous process. And we should emphasize that this insurgency is a US-NATO-Israeli-sponsored terrorist operation, which is being defeated. And we should understand that this is a proxy entity of the Western military alliance recruited by NATO and its allies including of course Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. We have a severe opposition and an insurgency, which is largely a Western construct - it's a fake opposition and the military arm of this entity are the terrorists, which are supported covertly by Western intelligence, supplied and so on. So the question we have to ask ourselves now, which is of course very crucial: Do we need a peace plan or do we need peace? Because in essence Syria has achieved the goal of laying the grounds for peace through the defeat of these terrorists. Press TV: With regards to the plan to destroy Syria's chemical weapons... Belgium, France and Albania were chosen as host countries. Firstly, is there any significance as to why these countries; and secondly, what are the side effects of chemical weapons destruction for these host countries? Chossudovsky: With regards to the chemical weapons issue pertaining to Syria, this has been, on the part of the United States and its allies, it has been a mechanism in a sense to divert attention from the real conflict. It has been used as a mechanism also to divert attention from the fact that the weapons of mass destruction are held essentially by the Western military alliance and its...ally, Israel, which threatens the entire region. At the same time, putting aside the chemical weapons issue, we must establish the record of what has happened. This has been a criminal undertaking of unleashing terrorists against a sovereign State. We must declare an unconditional moratorium on support to these mercenary forces, [though] the Western military alliance will attempt to rebuild them. We have to raise the issue of war reparations because essentially this is a criminal war and those responsible for that war must pay reparations. Incidentally the United States has in fact destroyed several countries in the post-World War Two period, starting with Korea, Vietnam, of course Afghanistan and Iraq; they've never paid war reparations. But here we have a situation where the war criminals should be exposed and indicted under international humanitarian law. The actors of this undertaking are not the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists; these are the foot soldiers of the Western military alliance. The architects are in Brussels, Washington, London, Ankara, Tel Aviv, Doha and Riyadh. The End of American Power? Washington has Lost All Credibility
The Leader of Iran's Islamic Revolution says the United States has lost its political and military power and turned into a country grappling with its biggest economic and financial problems. He was addressing a group of school and university students on the occasion of Student Day in Iran. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the U-S is suffering from political problems and divisions which led to the recent shutdown of the federal government. The leader noted that Iran's current economic hardships pale in comparison with those of the US administration. He said US officials made projections some 11 years ago about having 14-thousand billion dollars in extra revenues by 2011 or 2012, and that now, in practice, they are suffering from a huge 17-thousand billion dollar deficit. He added that this alone shows America's true economic situation and the inaccuracy of their official calculations. Ayatollah Khamenei also made mention of deep divisions among Washington's allies, saying that the U-S has failed to convince even its closest partners like France or Britain to back its decision on launching a strike against Syria. American 'Exceptionalism' an Outdated Concept
The longstanding notion of US exceptionalism has deep roots in the American psyche, but as the world experiences a "tectonic shift in global geopolitics" the very idea of Washington's superiority is being challenged, analyst Eric Draitser told RT. Earlier this week, President Barack Obama reaffirmed Washington's desire to engage in the affairs of other states, particularly in the Middle East. "I believe America must remain engaged for our own security. But I also believe the world is better for it. Some may disagree, but I believe that America is exceptional -- in part because we have shown a willingness, through the sacrifice of blood and treasure, to stand up not only for our own narrow self-interest, but for the interests of all," Obama said in his address to the UN General Assembly in New York. Analyst Eric Draitser believes Obama's statement has nothing to do with the situation in Syria, but rather is about US-Russia political rivalry and a direct response to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who recently addressed the American nation through one of the most respected US media outlets, The New York Times. Derivatives are Destroying the Real Economy
Press TV has conducted an interview with Professor Michel Chossudovsky, economic analyst and researcher with the Centre for Research on Globalization in Montreal about the issue of the widening gap between the richest in society and the poorest globally. According to Chossudovsky: "It is not production and trade, which is the source of enrichment; it is manipulation and fraud at a global stage. We're dealing with institutionalized theft, which is embedded in the financial system. It is not what we might describe as capital accumulation from a productive process, nor is it through work performed by these wealthy people." The following is an approximate transcript of the interview. Press TV: That is a staggering difference as far as a percentage, a very small percentage basically controlling the majority of the wealth in the world and they continue to get richer. What do you attribute this, what seems to be a vast difference between the haves and the have-nots in this world? Chossudovsky: I think we have to focus on the sources of this enrichment. It is not production and trade, which is the source of enrichment; it is manipulation and fraud at a global stage. In other words, we're dealing with institutionalized theft, which is embedded in the financial system; it is not what we might describe as capital accumulation from a productive process, nor is it through work performed by these wealthy people. It is through displacement and destruction of the real economy where small and medium-sized enterprises are driven into bankruptcy. In other words, what I'm saying is that enrichment creates dislocation of the financial system of the real economy and in turn it leads to massive concentration of ownership. Now, we might ask, how do these people actually become rich? They essentially become rich through the powers of manipulation, through speculative activity. They have the ability to undertake secure speculative transactions; through derivative trade; through acts of deception. They conduct insider trading; they are able to influence and manipulate markets; they are able to influence those markets -- they know where the market is going, they can position themselves. At the same time they influence policies and legislation in government and the legislature; they co-opt politicians. So, in effect, this process of concentration of wealth is very different to what we have experienced historically, let's say in the course of the 20th century. Press TV: Do you see the situation continuing to get worse and if so what will it take to turn this around? Chossudovsky: Speculation will lead to increased concentration of wealth and assets because the underlying economic policies in fact favor this process. The massive austerity measures; the deregulation of financial markets; the development of trading blocs, which in turn wipes off the small and medium sized enterprises from the market. The only way to ultimately undermine this process of wealth concentration is through regulatory policy and I would say one of the major instruments would be in fact to cancel speculative trade -- derivative trade, trade in derivative markets. That would be the first step. Because... in a deregulated environment with complicit governments and very powerful financial institutions this enrichment is ultimately feeding on poverty, leading to a massive concentration of ownership. But you can see also in certain countries how these self-made billionaires are in fact fabricated at the expense of the large majority of the population, leading to mass poverty. Press TV: With what you are talking about, "leading to mass poverty;" how likely then do you think it will be that we're going to see mass demonstrations, people taking to the streets as they are getting less and less of the pie and a small percentage actually is taking the majority of the pie? Chossudovsky: Inevitably this process of concentration of wealth is leading to mass unemployment and poverty, but ultimately also destitution -- where people are no longer even within the labor market, they don't get work, they can't even apply for low wage work. This will lead to a massive protest movement. But at the same time we see particularly in Western countries the development of a large scale police apparatus, surveillance, which is intended essentially to quell the protest movement. This process is leading the world into a very serious global crisis because on one hand we see the development of the luxury goods economy; we see the development of the weapons economy -- the war economy; and at the same time we see the collapse in the production of essential commodities for the large majority of the population. Engdahl: Pentagon's Hand Behind French Intervention in Mali
As French soldiers pour into Mali in the fight to push back the advancing Islamist militants, questions have been raised as to the motives behind the intervention. Author F. William Engdahl told RT the US was using France as a scapegoat to save face. RT: At a time when France and the rest of the Eurozone are trying to weather the economic crisis, what's Paris seeking to gain by getting involved in another conflict overseas? F. William Engdahl: Well, I think the intervention in Mali is another follow-up to the French role in other destabilizations that we've seen, especially in Libya last year with the toppling of the Gadhafi regime. In a sense this is French neocolonialism in action. But, interestingly enough, I think behind the French intervention is the very strong hand of the US Pentagon which has been preparing this partitioning of Mali, which it is now looming to be, between northern Mali, where al-Qaeda and other terrorists are supposedly the cause for French military intervention, andsouthern Mali, which is a more agricultural region. Because in northern Mali recently there have been huge finds of oil discovered, so that leads one to think that it's very convenient that these armed rebels spill over the border from Libya last year and just at the same time a US-trained military captain creates a coup d'état in the Southern capital of Mali and installs a dictatorial regime against one of Africa's few democratically elected presidents. So this whole thing bears the imprint of US AFRICOM [US Africa Command] and an attempt to militarize the whole region and its resources. Mali is a strategic lynchpin in that. It borders Algeria which is one of the top goals of these various NATO interventions from France, the US and other sides. Mauritania, the Ivory Coast, Guinea, Burkina Faso. All of this area is just swimming in untapped resources, whether it be gold, manganese, copper. RT: Why was France the first Western country to get involved to such an extent? And what sort of message is this military initiative sending to its allies? FWE: Well I think that's the Obama Administration's strategy -- let France take the hit on this as they did in Libya and other places in the past year and-a-half and the US will try and play a more discrete role in the background rather than being upfront as they were in Iraq and Afghanistan which cost the US huge amounts of credibility around the world. They're playing a little bit more of a sly game here, but the rush for the US to announce its support the French military intervention and the actions of AFRICOM over the past year and-a-half, two years, in Mali make clear that this is a US operation with the French as a junior partner. RT: How far could this conflict potentially escalate? Could the French get bogged down, and who else is likely to get involved? FWE: The other European countries are loath to get involved in an Afghan-type ground situation with their troops. The Germans are providing humanitarian aid and some special forces training so far, but, frankly, I think al-Qaeda in northern Maghreb is a very suspicious operation and the timing of its activities coming over the border suggests that perhaps some NATO countries might be helping the al-Qaeda group to get military weapons and create the casus belli that justifies NATO intervention. I think we're seeing a very cynical game being played out here in Mali and it's a very dangerous one when Africa is suddenly becoming a continent that's been discovered by China, by the US and Europe and the rest of the world as the next place where untold wealth and resources can be captured.

Number of Foreign Mercenaries in Syria Much Higher than Estimates
Press TV talks with Michel Chossudovsky, from the Center for Research on Globalization from Montreal, regarding the figures released by Foreign Policy magazine about the number of foreign militants fighting President Bashar al-Assad's government in Syria. The following is an approximate transcription of the interview. Press TV: Some alarming figures are coming through based on this report by Foreign Policy magazine which I am sure you are aware of at this point. But tell us how is this going to then as a consequence affect the countries of the region of which these people are nationals of such as Europe? Chossudovsky: First of all, let me say that the Foreign Policy magazine, its figures are taken out of the blue. They have absolutely no evidence as to the statements which are made. If they are compared to Afghanistan, there were a hundred thousand foreign fighters recruited by the CIA. They were al-Qaeda affiliated foreign fighters. That report in Foreign Policy magazine has no authorities by an independent researcher based in Norway. What I can say is that the numbers of mercenaries and foreign fighters in Syria over nearly a three-year period has been substantial but it is impossible to establish the numbers because first of all, these mercenaries are arrested, some are killed and what is now disturbing is that these foreign supported mercenaries are coming in with new recruits. In other words, these foreign fighters which are supported by the Western military alliance and we have ample documentation to that effect. They are supported by NATO; they are supported by Israel, by Turkey, by Qatar, by Saudi Arabia; they are trained in Saudi Arabia and overriding this process is of course the US intelligence which is behind this process. So we are not dealing with a protest movement; we are dealing with criminal insurrection whereby these mercenaries trained in Saudi Arabia, in Qatar and then led into Syria; they commit atrocities and then these atrocities are blamed on the government. ...I fully concur with the statements of the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, I would add that to resolve and end this war, would require that the Western military alliance cease to support the terrorists, very simple. If no mercenaries are recruited and sent into Syria, the war is over because essentially the Syrian armed forces have managed to pacify pretty much all major sectors of the country so far and why is the war continuing because more mercenaries are being recruited. Some of these mercenaries in fact are prisoners in Saudi Arabia; they are criminals and then they are indoctrinated. This is not a "Jihadist" movement. It has the label of a "Jihadist" movement but it is not. It is simply the recruitment of people who are sent in and given instructions as to their mandate which is essentially to kill civilians and we have seen this happening and we have seen the various operations which have resulted in countless civilian deaths and atrocities. Human Trafficking: The Second Largest Industry in the World
A report by an international foundation on modern slavery has revealed that nearly 30 million people are enslaved across the globe. The index released by the Walk Free Foundation (WFF) on Thursday said the slaves are either trafficked into brothels, forced into manual labor, fall victims to debt bondage, or are even born into servitude. Almost half of these people are in India, where "by far the largest proportion of this problem is the exploitation of Indian citizens within India itself, particularly through debt bondage and bonded labor," the survey found. The index also showed that aside from India, the problem is most rampant in the West African country of Mauritania, where four percent of the population is estimated to be held in slavery. The report by the Australian-based group described Mauritania as a nation with "deeply entrenched hereditary slavery," where "people in slavery may be bought and sold, rented out and given away as gifts." Benin, Gambia, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Haiti and Nepal are among other countries with the highest prevalence of modern slavery, the report said. The WFF index ranked 162 countries on the number of people living in slavery, the risk of enslavement, and the strength of government action to counter the illegal activity. Figures indicate human trafficking along with arms dealing is the second largest industry in the world after drug dealing. Press TV speaks with Sara Flounders in New York to get further information. Manufacturing Dissent: The Truth About Syria
Manufacturing Dissent is a documentary posthumously dedicated to Syrian Palestinian actor Mohamad Rafea, who was kidnapped, tortured and finally brutally murdered on Sunday November 4th 2012 by terrorist groups that have been set loose on the country since the US, UK and their western and Gulf State allies launched a covert war in Syria in early 2011, dressed up by the media as a "revolution". The words spoken in this video by Rafea, and the courage he shows here, is why he was murdered. Manufacturing Dissent is a feature about the psychological-warfare by the media and political establishment of the west and their allies aimed at facilitating the US, European and Israeli agenda of getting rid of the current Syrian government. It demonstrates how the media has directly contributed to the bloodshed in Syria. Manufacturing Dissent includes evidence of fake reports broadcasted/published by the likes of CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera and others and interviews with a cross section of the Syrian population including an actor, a craftsman, a journalist, a resident from Homs and an activist who have all been affected by the crisis. Produced by journalists Lizzie Phelan and Mostafa Afzalzadeh. Edited by Lizzie Phelan. Website for the documentary here http://www.manufacturing-dissent.com/ designed by Shahinaz Alsibahie. Media Disinformation and the Framing of the Syrian War
Months after the events took place, Pulitzer prize winning journalists and others are finally reporting about the lies and manipulations of the US government regarding the recent chemical weapons attack in Syria. Far from shining a light on the true situation in the country, however, these reports continue to avoid the underlying causes and explanations for what is happening in Syria, and the forces that are behind it. Testimony by Dr. Ilan Pappe on Genocide in Palestine by Israel
The Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal Hearing on Palestine--Testimony by Dr. Ilan Pappe. On November 22, 2013, the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal (KLWCT) went into the third day of the hearing on genocide and war crimes charges against the State of Israel and Amos Yaron, a retired Israeli army general. The tribunal heard the testimony of renowned historian and socialist activist, Prof Ilan Pappe, who informed the tribunal about the systematic ethnic cleansing via expulsion and killing of the Palestinians from their homeland since 1948. Three witnesses from West Bank also gave an account of their trials and tribulations under the Israelis. The testimony of Dr. Pappe was an interesting and revealing account of the Israeli leadership strategy to rid the Palestinians from their homeland since the 1940s. He testified that the expulsions were not decided on an ad hoc basis, as other historians have argued, but constituted the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, in accordance with Plan Dalet drawn up in 1947 by Israel's leaders then. He testified that the expulsion of the Palestinians in 1948 constituted ethnic cleansing, as the Zionists movement was not concerned with the native people. He revealed that it was as early as in the 1940s when it began deliberating the fate of the indigenous people of Palestine and that they wanted to take over Palestine with as little Palestinians in it by having them leave voluntarily or be forced out. He further revealed that from 1948 until 1949, the plan was enforced by Israeli forces to cleanse villages and towns of Palestinians by encircling the villages/towns from three flanks to intimidate the residents into leaving by leaving one flank open. Some 530 villages were wiped out physically. Under the partition plan, 56% of the land was to be handed to Israel wherein the 2/3 of the population was Palestinians. In the end, 93% of the land came under the control of Israel and 750,000 Palestinians were left out as refugees in neighbouring countries, in Gaza and West Bank. After the 1967 war, Gaza and West Bank were occupied. He added that having taken over most of Palestine territories, the policy changed from expelling to destroying the Palestinians. Hence, the Sabra & Shatilla massacre was an attempt to destroy Palestinians in Lebanon. He told the tribunal that the use of military action against Palestinians in Gaza and West Bank was considered genocidal against people who cannot defend themselves. Military operations such as Summer Rains, Autumn Clouds, and Cast Lead were just to kill the Palestinians and destroy the economy, culture and their spirit. In cross-examination by Amicus Curiae Jason Kay, Prof Pappe agreed that his view of history is a minority view and that while he is grateful that the Zionist movement had saved his parents from the Nazi holocaust for which he is grateful; however, the moral way is to live together with the Palestinians, not expel and kill them.
