Can you repair dents in an automobile with a hair dryer and a can of compressed air? Yes and no. It depends upon the location and severity of the damage. But as I have demonstrated, with a heat gun, $9 worth of Endust Duster, and about 15 minutes, you can achieve some remarkable results. Read more at... http://blog.yagelski.com/2011/10/paintless-dent-repair-using-heat-gun.html Responses to the most common criticisms: Q. Why didn't you just push the dent out from behind? A. This is a hybrid vehicle and there is A/C equipment for battery cooling that is located between the sheet metal and the interior finish. The dent was simply not accessible from the inside. Q. Why didn't you just use a toilet plunger and pull the dent out? A. That may have worked on the larger of the two dents, but the surface area of the smaller dent would have made that impossible. Q. This video and photos of the dents have been Photoshopped and faked! A. Absolutely not. I will gladly attest that this video and the images of the dent, before and after, have not been retouched. I also have a witness who observed the process and would attest the same. Q. "Tapping" the panel like you did in the video would have popped the dent out without the heating and cooling. A. My attempts to pop the dent out with persuasive tapping by hand and a rubber mallet prior to the heating / cooling did not have any impact. Q. This process didn't help, you can still see the dents! A. Yes. if you look closely you can still see the smaller of the two dents. However, the larger of the two is not distinguishable to the casual observer. This process made a significant improvement to the appearance of both dents. It is not a factory perfect repair, but this is not a valuable vehicle either. I could not justify the expense of a professional body shop for a vehicle that is seven years old and +150,000 miles. This process provided a good alternative.

http://www.trustmymechanic.com/auto-repair/4639/should-you-steam-clean-your-car-engine/ I wanted to make a follow up video to my original video about why you should not steam clean the engine in your car. Now...if you want your engine to be all shiny and new looking by all means clean it how you wish, but be very careful to not get water or high pressure water in places it should not be. Most people would drive to the local car wash and use the high pressure hose to do it yourself steam clean....and cause major electrical issues later on. CRC Brakleener is a safe alternative to cleaning the oil and grease from your hard engine parts without the risk of damaging delicate wiring with the use of water. So here's the story... We dropped of the Impala for some repairs at a local mechanic shop, and after getting it back I noticed that EVERY wire, fuse, fastener, terminal and distribution block were missing. That's a lot of 1/0 wire! Being very upset at this, I decided to calm down and go back to the shop and politely ask the mechanic about my gear. So I did - And his reasoning for removing it?? He thought it was "his wire" - claiming he thought "it was already installed" in the car when he initially sold it to my girlfriend... Well, having YouTube'd pretty much the entire install, we all know that's not the case - something wasn't right - I mean, why would EVERY wire be removed, even the ones in the trunk? Last time I checked, engines aren't in the trunk! So yeah, I definitely think something shady was going on. But in the end, I didn't let it get the best of me, and I kept my composure - but next time I will be sure to TELL THE MECHANIC NOT TO TOUCH THE AUDIO GEAR :)

Although having a car can be helpful, when it comes time for repairs it would be good to know these 25 things your car mechanic won't tell you. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the text version too! - http://list25.com/25-things-your-car-mechanic-wont-tell-you/ Be wary of scare tactics, especially when they claim they wouldn't drive your car another foot. Make sure to check for certification in the shop and if you're in the US, a state license. Look for a clean garage. A cluttered floor filled with dirty rags may be a red flag. Although it seems obvious, never sign a blank work authorization form. Always have a specific estimate for each job first. If the mechanic claims they don't need fancy equipment like a basic engine analyzer, go elsewhere. As a rule of thumb, when you get a second opinion don't tell the mechanic what the first diagnosis was You don't need to have your fuel injector cleaned. Coolant flushes are usually a gimmick. Same with power steering flushes. Many of your car's fluids are designed to last up to 100,000 miles. If you're getting a strangely good deal on your tires you may be getting two year old treads. Ask about the build date. Avoid lifetime mufflers. While you can get free replacements you'll have to pay for pipe repairs anyway. If there is something wrong with your catalytic converter or emissions system consult your dealer. A free replacement is often legally required. Many times you will get charged double labor, especially for multiple tasks. Ask about labor time beforehand. Ask for your old parts back. At least you'll know they've been changed. Be careful with brake jobs. Many mechanics will use cheap parts and mark them up. Watch out for certified pre-owned cars. The certification usually means nothing. Bring your car in on Monday not Friday. On Friday the mechanics will rush the job to get done by the weekend. A transmission pan with metal particles in it is normal. Don't get duped. Be wary of advertisements for $100 brake jobs. A mechanic won't make any money on this. A transmission flush is almost guaranteed to be a scam. They aren't recommended by manufacturers and cars almost never need them. Cheap parts from China are getting popular. Ask to see the box. If they show you an air filter full of dirt and debris make sure it actually came from your vehicle. Some parts (like an air filter) are relatively easy to change yourself. Request factory equipment. This is just another to way to make sure you have legitimate parts. There are no legal standards in the US for used tires. Make sure to inspect them.

http://www.trustmymechanic.com/auto-repair/3045/tire-wear-problems-and-symptoms/ Check out this video showing you what tire wear symptoms are and how they can effect your vehicle. Take a closer look at your tires to see if you can stop excessive tire wear from costing you lots of money in tire replacement. "What are the signs of tire wear" The most common complaint I get in my shop related to tire wear is a loud roaring noise, which gets worse as the vehicle goes faster. When a tire wears unevenly there are high and low spots like those in my video above. Those high spots cause the roaring noise you hear inside the vehicle. What causes uneven tire wear? Usually lack of proper tire rotation and balancing is the biggest culprit, but improper tire air pressure can also be a cause as well. http://www.trustmymechanic.com/auto-repair/3045/tire-wear-problems-and-symptoms/ What about worn shocks? Can worn out shocks cause tire wear? Yes, to some degree it can if the shocks are totally worn out and allowing the tire to bounce up and down after contact with a pot hole. For the most part, the weight of the vehicle is enough to keep the tire in constant contact with the road surface. Can a bent wheel cause the tire wear? Yes, but a bent wheel will also cause a tire imbalance which should produce a shimmy inside the cab of the vehicle. Regular tire balancing and rotating should spot this. A steel wheel can sometimes be straightened pretty easily. An aluminum wheel can still be straightened but most shops cant do it in house. Can a defective tire be to blame? Yes, and I have seen a few out of round "new" tires that we had to replace due to a defect from the factory, rare, but can happen. Can driving too fast cause tire wear? Sure can, talk to my 86 year old grand mother who takes turns like an Indy racer. We have to replace her front tires quite often...way to go granny! Will out of alignment cause tire wear? Sure, happens just about all the time. I live in Houston and our streets are horrible. You can rest assured that your car is due for an alignment just about as soon as you hit the freeways. :) http://www.trustmymechanic.com/auto-repair/3045/tire-wear-problems-and-symptoms/ Other points of interest tire wear patterns tire wear indicators how to read tire wear tire wear pictures uneven tire wear tire wear problems tire tread wear what causes tire wear

http://www.trustmymechanic.com/auto-repair/3388/wipe-new-review/ Free $19 Gift and UPDATED VIDEO I apologize in advance for the small width, my 8 year old daughter was my videographer. :) Are you thinking about buying Wipe New seen on TV auto plastic renew product? I DID, and made this short video showing you how to use it and what it really costs. I have 2 vehicles with black plastic exterior body parts that have faded and look more white or gray than black any more. I have tried all kinds of products in the past but they only seem to last about 1-2 weeks before they start to fade again. I have been seeing this Wipe New product adverted on TV a few times and decided to give it a try for myself. It smells like Acetone, so I would assume it is making a chemical bond to the plastic, which should make it last much longer. When you go to buy Wipe New, you will have to go through a few (like 4) "upsells" before you can complete your order. The standard size bottle is 1.5 oz, which is TINY! So, I was sold by the upsell to double the product for an additional $19.95 plus an additional $9.95 shipping fee. My total purchase was $62....so be prepared to be upsold and not walk out with a $19 purchase. Now, with that said. They claim that 1 bottle will be enough to do 1 vehicle. I was skeptical, but I think they are correct. I did my full size pickup and my wifes mini van and still had half of the 3 oz (upsell bottle size) left over. I did both bumpers and the side view mirrors and the door handles...and it took less than 10 minutes to apply. You get 2 rubber gloves (which you better use), 2 application pads and a sand paper pad to use on the headlight lenses. It has been about 1 week since the video was shot and the plastic still looks awesome. I really hope this product lives up to it's claim to last about a year. If you have used it for longer than 1 week, please leave your comments below. Thanks for your help. Blessings, http://www.TrustMyMechanic.com http://www.MyHonestMechanic.com

http://www.MyHonestMechanic.com Tire Balancing How do you know when the tires on your car are due for wheel balancing or wheel alignment? Does the steering wheel in your car shake and shimmy from side to side while you are driving? Does the shimmy get worse the faster you drive? Can you drive out of the shimmy? "How often should you have the tires and wheels balanced on your vehicle?" I like to rotate and balance my tires about every 3 oil changes, so about every 12,000 miles of driving. Tires are pretty expensive these days so I want to make sure I take care of them and get the most life out of them that I can. The "new" rule of thumb is to place your newest and best tires on the rear of the vehicle, so you have more traction and control during wet weather stopping on curves. If the rear tires are worn out and do not have much traction to them your vehicle could hydroplane if you were to make a panic stop in wet weather while driving around a bend or a curve in the road. "How often should you get the front end aligned in your vehicle?" There really is no set in stone answer here. It can depend on many things, like how many curbs or pot holes you have come in contact with? How is the alignment doing, is there a pull to one side? Is there excessive tire wear going on, which is worse on just 1 or 2 tires? I personally like to align the wheels (4 wheel alignment) on my cars about every 25,000 miles unless I have a problem or experience an issue like I talked about above. Most vehicles these days will use a 4 wheel alignment machine which is laser guided. Most shimmies, shaking or steering wheel vibrations are NOT due to a wheel alignment issue but rather a wheel BALANCE issue. If you can drive out of the tire shimmy, say it starts to shimmy at 50mph but at 60mph it is better or gone...its usually a wheel balancing issue that needs to be addressed.

http://www.MyHonestMechanic.com I am sure you have heard people say their car got water in the fuel after they got some gasoline, right? Do you know how you can tell and what to look for? What can you do if you do have water in the gas of your vehicle? Are there any additives that really work to remove the water or prevent it from happening inside your fuel tank? I took this video and a fuel sample from a 4 wheeler I have. As you can see in my gas sample there is a darker looking blob at the bottom of the glass jar. That blob is water (and there is also some dirt that came out too) and that water causes all kinds of problems. Backfiring Running bad /engine miss Slow starts or no starts I like two products to help remove and prevent water from getting in my fuel systems. Seafoam - great gas additive for removing water from the fuel system Sta Bil - great for preventing water from getting in the fuel in the first place. In this video the plastic looked like ash gray, but the car owner insisted that it used to be a dark BLACK. Wow, was I shocked that Wipe New did virtually nothing to restore the old color...it just looked a little less ashy gray. When I sprayed the Eastwood Plastic Resurfacer product on the bumper it immediately turned back to the original black color. It does take a little more effort and time to use than Wipe New, but seemed to work 100% better on this vehicle. Please make sure you shake the can WELL, hold can about 8 inches from the surface and tape off any painted surfaces. I will update this video as time goes on to show the lasting results. Please leave your comments if you have tried either product and let us know how it worked for you. Austin Davis http://www.TrustMyMechanic.com http://www.MyHonestMechanic.com

http://www.trustmymechanic.com/auto-repair/4373/pocket-hose-review/ Pocket Hose Reviews I bought 3 pocket hoses from Walmart a few months ago and everyone of them has failed and I will be returning them to Walmart for a refund. The Pocket Hose is a great idea in concept, but they need to go back to the drawing board and come up with a better fabric to use. All 3 pocket hoses I purchased failed with the fabric part of the hose not the hard plastic fittings. Now, what I wanted to point out to you is the much better garden hose to use. The red hose in the video is much larger in inner diameter than the standard water hose, and it does not kink or break. The red hose in the video is probably at least 10 years old, and can be buried under ground for years without an issue. Tractor supply stores, Lowes and I even saw them for sale in Home depot the other day, so check out your stores or farm and ranch supply stores and see if you can buy one. Ok, got a car repair question for me? http://www.TrustMyMechanic.com http://www.MyHonestMechanic.com I'm here to help. My personal pocket hose review

http://www.MyHonestMechanic.com READ BEFORE YOU COMMENT!!!! - This is an old video with no sound, a very shade tree mechanic test to determine if you have bad spark plug wires causing an engine miss. This is done with a spray bottle of DISH SOAP AND WATER - do not use anything flammable!!!! BE NICE in your comments, I just was trying to help people with a simple and effective way to check for a damaged spark plug wire. I have never burned out a coil, shocked myself or anything else these commentors are talking about. Blessings, Austin http://www.TrustMyMechanic.com http://www.MyHonestMechanic.com

http://www.trustmymechanic.com/auto-repair/4345/head-gasket-repair-this-works/ (visit my site for more tips) Did your mechanic tell you your car has a headgasket leak? I get TONS of questions like this everyday and many of them are NOT head gasket leaks. I made this video to help you determine if you DO or DO NOT have an internal coolant leak. The FIRST, FIRST, FIRST thing you need to do is get a cooling system pressure test. This fast and cheap test will help you determine if you have an internal or external coolant leak. If you are absolutely sure there are no external leaks, and the radiator is not restricted and the electric radiator cooling fans are working, then try this awesome sealer. The product is called Engine Block Sealer, made by K&W. They have the old version in a hard metal can and their new and "improved" version in a green plastic bottle called Nano Technology. Both seem to work just fine. I do not personally use the product as the instructions on the can say (been using it my way for years with a 75-80% success rate and its much easier) My instructions for using K&W Block Sealer are: 1. Drain out all coolant from radiator as you possibly can. 2. Get a bucket and mix up the block sealer with tap water 3. Pour contents of the bucket into the radiator, top off with tap water 4. Then put 500 miles on the car as soon as you can 5. After 500 miles drain out the mix and reinstall coolant and water as needed The seal should be permanent You will NOT have boil over or freeze protection during this time period so please keep the engine from freezing and overheating. And no, I do not remove the spark plugs or the thermostat as the can says.. Just the steps above. http://www.TrustMyMechanic.com visit my site for more free information So my wife bough be a very nice birthday present this year, a wireless backup camera for my truck. She bought it at Costco, brand name is YADA, and it was cheap....like $100 or so, so I was not holding my breath as for the quality of the camera. The installation was sure fast and easy to do, anyone should be able to install this backup camera. So, I made this quick video showing you how I hooked it up to the backup lights and how I attached it to my dashboard inside the vehicle. Got a comment? Do you have one, or a better one?
