At the same time however, money is the highpoint of human tolerance. Money is the one thing in this world that crosses culture, religious beliefs, and social habits. In fact it is the only thing that doesn’t discriminate against religion, race, gender, age, or sexual orientation. Osama Bin Laden, the guy who hated what America stood for so much, still used and agreed on the idea of money – in fact his net worth was estimated to be $50 million dollars. You see even groups around the world – like the KKK that hate other people because of their religion, skin color, or whatever it is – still agree with those that they hate the most – they agree on the value of money. The question is then, how has money become the ultimate uniter of humans across the globe? Well before money was used people traded. For example, Bob may be great at making shoes and Joanna might have an amazing plum tree farm. Maybe Joanna needs a pair of new shoes to help her pick plums in the summer heat. Joanna might trade her plums for Bob’s shoes. The problem here is that Bob has to want or need plums. Maybe he already has a deal with another plum farmer. So what now? Joanna has to figure out what Bob wants in return for a pair of new shoes. Maybe his wife is ill and needs medical attention from a doctor. So Joanna then needs to find a doctor who wants plums in return for his services. Joanna gives the doctor plums, the doctor gives Bob’s wife medical attention, and Bob makes Joanna a pair of new Nikes. You can probably already see the problem. Trading requires that the people you are trading with actually want what you are offering. At the same time in a bartering economy people have to rethink the value of what they are trading is every day. If there are only 100 different commodities being traded in a market, that means buyers and sellers need to know 4,950 different exchange rates. Here’s where money comes in to play. Money was created all around the world at different times. Money was not some kind of technological invention, but instead a revolution of the collective mindset. When one thing was agreed upon and trusted by all members of a community as representing value that could be exchanged for any goods or services, money was invented. Money in a way became magic. With money you can convert anything into anything else. Sell your cow, and buy tuition to a school and learn. Work for a few hours and use the money given to you for your time to buy a joint so you can waste your time. If you have enough money you can even change your biological sex. How is this possible? It’s all about collective trust. The first known form of money was used 5000 years ago in ancient Sumer and was barley. People agreed that a certain weight of barley was worth a certain amount – the most common measurement being one sila or about 1 liter. So people would head to market with barley in hand and use it to buy goods or services. Eventually this gave way to the silver shekel or 8.33 grams of silver. The shekel eventually gave way to the coin – a standardized weight of metal – usually silver or gold – with an imprint of the kingdom it came from. The coin was first developed in 640 BC by Lydians in what is now modern day Turkey and is a monetary system that we still use today.

By sixteen he regularly attended the Buddhist Lodge in London, where he met Zen scholars Christmas Humphries and D. T. Suzuki. As a speaker and contributor to the Lodge's journal, The Middle Way, he wrote a series of philosophical commentaries and published his first book on Eastern thought, The Spirit of Zen, at age twenty-one. In the late thirties he moved to New York, and a few years later he became an Episcopalian priest. In 1942 he moved to Illinois and spent the wartime years as chaplain at Northwestern University. Then, in 1950, he left the Church, and his life took a turn away from organized religion back toward Eastern ways and expanding horizons. After meeting author and mythologist Joseph Campbell and composer John Cage in New York he headed to California and began teaching at the American Academy of Asian Studies in San Francisco. There his popular lectures spilled over into coffeehouse talks and appearances with the well-known beat writers Gary Snyder, Jack Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg. In late 1953 he began what would become the longest running series of Sunday morning public radio talks, which continue to this day with programs from the Alan Watts tape archives. In 1957 he published the bestselling The Way of Zen, beginning a prolific ten-year period in which he wrote Nature, Man and Woman; Beat Zen, Square Zen and Zen; This Is It; Psychotherapy East and West; The Two Hands of God; The Joyous Cosmology; and The Book: On the Taboo against Knowing Who You Are. By 1960 Watts's radio series Way Beyond the West on Berkeley's KPFA had an avid following on the West Coast, and NET television began national broadcasts of the series Eastern Wisdom in Modern Life. The first season, recorded in the studios of KQED, a San Francisco television station, focused on the relevance of Buddhism, and the second, on Zen and the arts.

Like the strings of a harp, if they are not in tune, in the proper pitch, they will vibrate like an unbalanced wheel; but tuned, in the proper pitch, the strings will vibrate smoothly, waves touch each other, crossing over each other and back again, like fluid, like water in a stream passing softly over the pebbles it encounters along its path. Chakras are wheels of energy, and they must be balanced. This video will help you find that balance. The Mexican-American War in 5 Minutes

Soon after Mexico's Independence from its colonizer, Spain, it went to war with the U.S. This war would lead to the loss of the modern day states of California, Arizona and New Mexico. While the Mexican-American War was hardly justifiable by the U.S., the fact remains, our country would be vastly different than it is today if the U.S. had never pursued its aggressive expansionist period in the 1800s. Enjoy the video and please subscribe! Script: It wasn’t that long ago that the United States went to war with its neighboring country, Mexico. Most wars in American history have not been popular amongst the American public and the Mexican-American war was no exception. Years before war broke out between the two countries, Mexico had fought its own war of independence against the Spaniards. It was in 1812 that Mexico freed itself from its colonizers. At the time the new country spanned from current day northern Oregon to the modern country of Guatemala. Its northern territory was sparsely populated and because of this the government supported plans to welcome settlers from the United States in the hopes of further developing the region. It was through this program that the majority of the population in Texas became American – by the time of the Texas Revolution nearly 10,000 of the 14,000 people living in Texas were American settlers. The only condition that the Mexican government placed on its foreign population in Texas were that they pledge loyalty to Mexico, convert to Catholicism, and live on the land they purchased for at least 10 years – Mexico also didn’t allow slavery in its country. This proved hard for the American settlers to follow because they were mostly protestant, loyal to the U.S. and proslavery. It wasn’t long before Texas erupted in rebellion and fought a revolution of its own against the Mexican government. After Texas won its independence from Mexico it tried to become part of the United States two times. However, the U.S. Congress rejected its application because many Congressmen didn’t want to antagonize the Mexican government. Additionally some Congressmen from the free north eastern states did not want to add another slave state to the country. In 1844 President James K. Polk was elected president who was an avid supporter of Manifest Destiny, or the belief that God has meant for the United States to conquer the land from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific. Polk’s eye was not just on Texas – but veered all the way to California. When Polk became president, Congress voted to annex Texas into the United States. It was in 1845 when the president sent troops under the command of General Zachary Taylor into an area between the Nueces River – which was the traditional southern border of the Mexican state of Texas – and the Rio Grande – which marks the current border between Texas and Mexico. At the same time Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico City to try and purchase California. Both of these acts angered the Mexican Government and because of this Slidell was sent back to the U.S. Polk, who felt that the Mexican government mistreated Slidell, seized the opportunity and when he was told that on May 9, 1846, Mexican soldiers had fired upon American soldiers between Rio Grande and the Nueces River Polk declared that “We have tried every effort at reconciliation. The cup of forbearance had been exhausted even before the recent information from the frontier of the Del Norte. But now, Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil.” With this Polk declared war on Mexico. However, Mexicans thought of this act as one of banditry because of course, the shots that were fired upon American soldiers, were in Mexico’s eyes still in Mexico – south of the traditional Texas state border – the Nueces River. In fact a Mexican article written just days after war was announced in the paper El Tiempo declared that “The American government acted like a bandit who came upon a traveler.” There were even U.S. Congressmen that declared the war an act unjustifiable. Senator Charles Sumner stated that “Certainly Mexico might justly charge our citizens with disgraceful robbery, while, in seeking extension of slavery, [our own citizens denied the great truths of American freedom…”

These meditation techniques, known as Zazen, have been passed down generation after generation from the Shakyamuni Buddha. Transcript: Hazy Moon Zen Center: Meditation Instruction "The Zazen I speak of is not learning meditation. It is the manifestation of ultimate reality." - Dogen At the Hazy Moon, we practice classical meditation as taught by the Shakyamuni Buddha and his successors, passed down from India to China, to Japan, to America. The form is simple and enduring. To begin, you will need a quiet room, comfortable clothes, and a cushion. Choosing Your Position. Sit on the forward third of your cushion. The lower body will form a tripod - knees on the ground and the base supported with a cushion, bench or chair. Choose a position you can sustain for comfort and stability. For the full lotus position, place your right foot on your left thigh, and your left foot against your right thigh. The half lotus position places the right foot on the left thigh and the left foot on the floor against the right thigh. In burmese, both feet are on the floor, tucked against each leg. To sit in the seiza position, set the cushion up vertically. The shins lie on either side of the cushion. A bench can also be used. When sitting in a chair, place your feet flat on the ground, and sit towards the chair's edge to ensure an erect spine. Whatever position you choose, your upper body will be the same. Place your hands in the cosmic mudra - right palm up against the lower belly. Left atop right, middle knuckles overlap. Thumb-tips lightly touch and form an oval. Use a supporting cushion if your hands fall low or pull your shoulders. Finding Your Posture Whatever position is right for you, begin by swaying side to side to center the spine. Elongate your spine by pushing up towards the ceiling then relax. Tip the pelvis forward slightly to encourage the natural curve of your back. Relax the belly and let it protrude. Ears should be in line with the shoulders, shoulders over hips. Center the tip of the nose over the navel, and tuck the chin in slightly. Eyes are open, lowered at a 45 degree angle in an unfocused and gentle gaze toward the floor. Look out a few feet in front of you. Have a relaxed but alert posture. Take time to set up your body correctly every time you sit. Breathing Begin by paying attention to your breath. Let it move naturally, without effort. Count each exhale and inhale, one to ten. Onnnnne, onnnnnnne. Twooooooo, twooooo. Threeee, threeeee. Breathe from the lower belly, about two fingers width below your navel. Your breath may be shallow at first. It will deepen naturally with practice. Set an alarm for yourself for 10 minutes. You can experiment with longer times. It is best to sit every day. Count silently from one to ten, one to ten, one to ten. If you lose the count, resume where you left off or go back to one. When thoughts come up, don't engage with them and don't suppress them. Visit the site to find details of Zen Habit's courses and books. Transcript Zen Habits - Rules for Getting Organized & Decluttered What would it take to get your life decluttered and organized? That might be a tall order for many of us, but the truth is, we could do it in bursts and spurts, using a handful of easy-to-follow rules. The other day I wrote about the idea of setting rules instead of goals … today I want to share a few ideas for rules to help you get decluttered and organized. I know in my life, going from being overwhelmed with clutter to minimalism was a slow but rewarding journey, and now I feel happy every time I look around and see the lovely space around me. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I’m here to testify that it’s not impossible, and it just takes some small steps that add up over time. Here are the rules I suggest — though I don’t suggest adopting them all, and especially not all at once. Try a few out, see how they work for you, then try a few others. Get yourself organized at the start and end of a day. As you start your work day, write down your 3 Most Important Tasks (MITs). Write down a handful of other things you’d like to do today as well. Clear your desk, get things in order. At the end of each day, tidy things up, check off your list, maybe even get things ready for tomorrow When you get up from your desk, put one thing away. Whenever you get up for a glass of water, to go to the bathroom, to take a break … pick up something off your desk and put it away. If your desk is clear, look for something nearby. When you’re done eating, wash your bowl. This is self-explanatory. Mindfully wash your dishes instead of leaving them in the sink. If there are other dishes in the sink, wash a few of them too. Wipe down the sink when you use it. Whenever you wash your hands or brush your teeth in the bathroom, wipe down the sink so it’s clean. Do the same in the kitchen sink. Clear away a few things around the sink too if you can. When you walk through a room, find one thing to put away. If you’re going from your bedroom to the living room, find one thing during that trip to put away. You don’t have to get stuck in putting everything away, just one thing. When you take off a piece of clothing, put it away. When you shower or change clothes, instead of leaving them on the floor or on a piece of furniture, put the clothes away or in a hamper. Look for a few other clothes to put away too if there are more lying around. Keep flat surfaces clear. Your tables, counters, desks, floors … keep them clear. If there’s a ton of clutter there now, see the rule below about decluttering on Saturdays. But if it’s doable, just start clearing whatever is on the floor (except furniture and the like). When you walk by the kitchen counter, look for things other than oft-used appliances to put away. At the end of the work day, file stuff. If you still use papers, file them at the end of the day. If you are all digital, clear your computer desktop and put files where they belong. Deal with an email instead of putting it off. When you open an email, give it the space to deal with it immediately. Read it, reply, take action, or archive it. Or put it on your to-do list for later if it’s a big task. Don’t just constantly open emails without handling them.
