Unfortunately, there are many factors that can negatively affect your hormones - food, exercise, stress, supplements and today’s topic - 7 things in your home, that are lowering and killing your testosterone levels and at the same time, increasing your negative, “anti-testosterone” hormones. This is a problem for both men and women, but much more so for men because they are very dependant on testosterone. Basically, with all of these testosterone killers in your home, the end result is that you look and feel older. You’re going to lose your sex drive, lose muscle size and strength, get fatter, feel depressed, increase your risks for various cancers and diseases and basically, accelerate the aging process! And it seems that a primary cause of these problems is excess estrogen, which indirectly lowers testosterone. Also, estrogen is a primary cause of both breast AND prostate cancer. So, it’s a big problem that you want to fix. Now, your body can create its own estrogen internally (endogenously). However, there’s also environmental estrogens, from the outside (exogenously) and that’s what I’m going to quickly discuss today because these you CAN control. Thus, you should try your best to limit or hopefully eliminate the following 7 testosterone killers in your home. 1 -- Bisphenol A (BPA) Otherwise known as BPA, it is probably the most well-known of a family of chemicals used in the production of polycarbonate plastics for its effect of the hardness of plastic. Not only has it been linked to low testosterone levels, but also to erectile dysfunction and cancers, both prostate and breast. You can find it in: Reusable plastic bottles Kid’s sippy cups Clear, hard plastic items The lining of food cans 2 -- Parabens Another large family of chemical, which have a weak affinity for estrogen receptors. They are most present in sun blocking, SPF blocking lotions though... and this is where they have the potential to cause more damage because you’ll be applying these sunblocking lotions all of your body. This is not only a very large surface area, but you skin also absorbs the chemicals quickly. So if you’re out in the sun, please have a gradual exposure or use a parabens-free lotion. You will find those in a wide variety of products in your medicine cabinet: Cosmetics Shampoos Toothpaste shaving gels 3 -- Phthalates Many air fresheners, scented candles but also other items with the mysterious ingredient “perfume” are actually phthalates, a compound also used to make plastics more flexible. You can find them in many cosmetics and personal care items as well. Make sure you stay away from: Non-organic/non-Essential Oil-based scented candles Body spray Most commercial perfumes Air Fresheners Scented bathroom sprays Aromatic personal care products They have also been found in a lot of fast-food items 4 -- Soy This is a main food source for massive amounts of phytoestrogens. Many vegans and vegetarians want to compensate the lack of protein from animal sources by eating more soy, which leads to a host of health issues - one of the worst in my opinion, being a decrease in thyroid levels.1 5 -- Beer Hops found in beer, is actually a rich source of phytoestrogens, and even beer on the weekends does decrease testosterone levels. So regular drinking or large amount have effects on your androgen levels that are compounded by the other health hazards alcohol has. 6 -- Triclosan This is main antibacterial agent found in antibacterial soap. It, and its cousin triclocarban, have a testosterone-lowering by decreasing the biosynthesis of testosterone.2,3 In fact, it’s also a carcinogen (cancer causing). This simple exercise will also help avoid the embarrasing “premature ejeculation”, allowing you to statisfy your parter, better and long than ever before. If you’ve been following my work and watching my videos, you would know that certain exercises can either increase or decrease your libido, erection strength, hardness and even size, because of hormonal changes. If you didn’t already know, testosterone is the primary hormone that increases your libido, sex drive and “muscle size”. Unfortunately, this hormone starts to decrease around the age of 25. However, certain exercises can increase your decrease your testosterone. For example, doing too much cardiovascular exercise - like running, jogging, etc. can decrease your testosterone because of the increase in your stress hormone, cortisol. TWO things you do NOT want to do. One of the best forms of exercise for increasing your testosterone is lifting weights. However, too much of that isn’t good either. About 3-4x weekly, no more than an hour is just the right amount to increase your testosterone and help improve your libido and sex drive. The Non-Exercise, Exercise However, today I’m NOT going to discuss anything about lifting weights, cardio, etc. I’ve done that in the past. What I want to talk about is a very simple “non-exercise”, exercise... that you can do RIGHT NOW, while watching this video and that’s called, the Kegel Exercise. I call this the “non-exercise” exercise because it requires no gym, equipment or even real movement. Now, some of you may have heard of this. Unfortunately most do it incorrectly. Kegel exercises are done to strengthen the perineal muscles. To “flex” this muscle, it’s very simple. One way to describe how to do it is, by contracting your anus muscle, as if you’re trying to hold in gas. Go ahead and give it a try now... Another way to do it is stop peeing midway through. Thus, as you’re peeing, “contract the muscle” that will STOP the pee, midway through. That’s it - that’s a kegel exercise. Super simple, but extremely effective. You can literally do it anywhere, anytime and nobody would know. Sets & Reps You should do kegel’s about 3x a week to start with. Over time, slowly build up to 5x weekly. Just don’t do it every single day because like any muscle, it requires rest to gain strength. Contract the muscle (holding in gas or stop peeing) and hold for 3-5 seconds. Relax for 1-2 seconds. That’s ONE repetition Do this 10 of these, for 10 repetitions. That’s ONE set Do one set of 10 repetitions, 3x weekly. Then maybe the next week do 2 sets of 10 reps and work up to 3 sets of 10 reps, 3x weekly. You can do it all at once, or break it up 2-3x daily. Nothing it set in stone. What matters is consistency, persistence and patience. Benefits There lots of benefits when this muscle is strong Stronger, full erections Last longer, more stamina and the prevention of premature ejeculation. Stronger orgasms. Healthier prostate. Improvement for those who have overactive bladder or urinary incontinence. How To Improve Results Of course, doing the right exercises is a great start. However, the bottom line is that you need to have optimal levels of your anti-aging, “pro-sexual” hormones such as total and free testosterone levels. However, I first want to reveal 7 warning signs that you have suboptimal and most likely, “low” testosterone. And I say “warning signs” because low testosterone … or “not optimal” testosterone levels as I like to call it, is directly linked to many disease and health alilments2: High cholesterol Diabetes Thyroid problems High blood pressure Depression Memory loss Prostate cancer Osteoporosis etc Simply stated, low testosterone is causing you to age faster. So I’m going to quickly list the top 7 signs that you have low testosterone and then one of my favorite, natural solutions. 1 -- Low Sex Drive / Libido One of the biggest signs is that you have low libido. This includes physical and/or emotional drive. So, don’t think it’s just limited to erectile dysfunction or a physical “urge”. 2 -- Depression of Feeling “Unmotivated” Like I said, your brain has testosterone receptors also and thus, low testosterone leads to a lack of drive in life, not just sex. You’re not as motivated, you’re more irritable and “grumpy”.5 3 -- Muscle Loss I’m sure you already know that testosterone plays a big role in muscle size. How Testosterone Declines in Men (Physiologically, HPTA Axis, etc) HPTA = Hypothalamic Pituitary Gonadal Axis This axis produces circulating steroids important for male sexual function, fertility and development. Prostate and penis are steroid sensitive organs impacted by the regulation of the HPTA. This reproductive axis consists of three parts: 1. Hypothalamus -Produces GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) 2. Pituitary Gland -GnRH is sent to the pituitary gland where it stimulates the synthesis and release of gonadotropic hormones LH and FSH. 3. Testis -Gonads carry LH to the testis where they stimulate testosterone production through the testicular Leydig cells -Testosterone is produced by conversion of cholesterol -FSH is crucial for spermatogenesis Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the activated form of testosterone. 2% of testosterone is free or unbound, with the remainder being bound to SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin), albumin- and cortisol-binding globulin. Bioavailable testosterone is the testosterone that is not bound to SHBG. Testosterone and DHT act on organs. -Causes development of secondary sexual characteristics -Inhibit secretion of LH and FSH by the pituitary gland, thus stops further testosterone production = negative feedback loop. -There exist androgen receptors in the pituitary and the hypothalamic neurons that bind to testosterone and signal to stop GnRH release Homeostasis is maintained through this loop - once testosterone stops being produced, this inhibited secretion stops and GnRH again causes LH and FSH release to produce further testosterone. As men age, they undergo hormonal level changes: -Testosterone decrease -LH and FSH increase -Other hormones that decrease: T3, insulin, growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor 1, thyroid stimulating hormone -Also an increase in SHBG -Dihydrotestosterone levels are unchanged -Estrogen levels unchanged As men age, the decrease in testosterone paired with the increase in SHBG leads to a decline in free, or bioavailable, testosterone. These hormonal changes start in the 30s and are well established by the 50s. Levels of testosterone vary greatly between men and not all men will be classified as hypogonadal as they age. What causes these hormone changes? 1. Testicular failure due to a decline in Leydig cell mass 2. Hypothalamic-pituitary system, or secondary hypogonadism failure -Believed not to be due to primary hypogonadism (disease of the testes) due to small increase in LH and decrease in responsiveness of LH and FSH to GnRH 3. Change in androgen receptor site sensitivity One can distinguish between those with pituitary disorders or hypothalamic disease by administering GnRH. Those with pituitary disorders will not respond by producing more LH and FSH whereas those with hypothalamic disorders will respond with increased LH and FSH. Numerous studies have shown a positive impact of healthy, dietary fat intake on testosterone levels in men. Cholesterol is tied to the production of sex hormones. Testosterone is created in the Leydig cells when LH triggers the cells to convert cholesterol into testosterone. Cholesterol is the precursor to pregnenolone, which is the precursor of steroid hormones. Pregnenolone is the precursor of progesterone, which is then converted into testosterone (progesterone is also converted into cortisol and aldosterone.)
