Her straight forward, common sense approach, and her practical, research-based, data-driven strategies yield positive, measurable results for all organizations. Patterns and Procedures Procedures are another way we use rules and familiar patterns to remember information. Patterns are the key to intelligence. Patterns are critical. Some of the ways we can use patterns include: • Saying pairs out loud • Finding ways to connect pairs together • Whispering information three times • Connecting pieces of information with a rhythm, a rhyme, or music • Writing them down • Diagramming Drill and Practice with Flash Cards Earlier, we discussed the value of repeating information while working with it to help move that information to long-term memory. One great way to accomplish this is through good old-fashioned drill and practice. When asking students to remember certain kinds of information, drill and practice activities are critical to getting that information through working memory and into long-term memory. One of my favorite drill and practice activities is an updated approach to the tried and true flash cards. For instance, when teaching phonics rules at the elementary level, have your students print their words on flash cards rather than writing them three times each. TEDxPennQuarter 2011 Sam Calagione Reinventing Beer
Sam Calagione is the founder and President of Dogfish Head, a Delaware craft brewery producing "off-centered ales for off-centered people." When Sam opened Dogfish Head in 1995, it was the smallest commercial brewery in America, brewing batches of 10 gallons at a time. Today, Dogfish Head is among the fastest growing breweries in the country, selling beer in 30 states and 3 countries. Sam is the maverick behind all of the "off-centered" things that happen at Dogfish Head, his passion and brainchild. He's creating brews with unconventional ingredients: herbs and spices, raisins, wood, corn and Aztec cocoa powder. Sam's innovative style has earned him a reputation as one of America's most adventurous entrepreneurs. Ranked among Fast Company's Most Creative People in Business in 2011, he's been named Businessman of the Year by The Small Business Association, and a Game Changer for 2010 by the Huffington Post. He's been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, Playboy, People, and Bon Appetit and was a finalist for the 2011 James Beard Awards (only the second beverage producer to ever be nominated). His books include Brewing Up a Business; Extreme Brewing: He Said Beer, She Said Wine and he was the host of Brew Masters on the Discovery Channel. Sam serves as the Vice Chair of the Brewers Association, an articulate ambassador for the craft-brewing world. He's often on the road promoting Dogfish Head and the spirit of small business through beer, song, dance, and words. He has spoken for Fast Company, Inc. Magazine, corporations and associations around the country. About TEDx: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. HP Catalyst Showcase: Using Technology to Support Teacher and Student Conceptual Learning
http://catalyst.nmc.org "Using Technology to Support Teacher and Student Conceptual Learning in Mathematics and Science" by Kenyatta University In Kenya, it is a fact that very few teachers have significant IT skills. There is also no concrete link between how pre-service education impacts a teacher's post-graduation professional development. Kenyatta University, located outside Nairobi, Kenya wants to address both of those challenges. They plan to work with colleagues from the Departments of Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Biological Sciences at Kenyatta University and mathematics and science education colleagues from Syracuse University, California State University--Fullerton, and California State University-San Marcos. The project will reach 300 pre-service mathematics and science teachers and 8 in-service high school teachers in an exploration of ways to more effectively develop mathematical and scientific curriculum. All participants will attend workshops to learn how to use Tablet PC technology, prepare and share classroom tasks with each other, and collaborate on techniques to incorporate technology in the scientific inquiry and problem-solving process. The primary purpose of the training will be to employ the technology as a means of fostering more comprehensive understanding in students. Kenyatta University is home to 3,200 students enrolled in education programs to become secondary math and science teachers. The project will further relationships between Kenyatta University and school-based sites. Armed with HP Mobile Calculating Lab Probes and graphing calculators, they aim to provide their pre-service teachers with the skill set necessary to instruct future students utilizing 21st century technology.

Prometheus and I: building new body parts from stem cells (15 Nov 2011)
UCL Lunch Hour Lecture: Prometheus and I: building new body parts from stem cells Professor Martin Birchall (UCL Ear Institute) Prometheus created life from clay, and within many biologists and surgeons there is a primal desire to do the same from the materials at hand, in an effort to stave off death and disease. Organ transplantation has been one Promethean solution, but a lack of donor organs, ethical and other issues limits the stretch of this technology. We performed the world's first stem cell based organ transplants in an adult and then in a child, and the results suggest a new future for organ replacement. The road will be a long one and raising the funds for the journey and managing expectations in the meantime are challenges. However, driven by such clinical successes, science is incrementally offering more and more opportunities to provide alternatives to and extend the scope of transplantation. A second Promethean myth has him punished for giving fire to man by being chained to a rock and having his liver pecked out by an eagle daily for eternity. In between, however, liver and man regenerate, and this reminds us that ultimately an understanding of the innate properties of tissues and organs to heal themselves may obviate the need for organ replacement altogether.
