US pharm industry creates diseases to cure them

03:59
From Russia Today: http://rt.com/news/us-pharm-industry-disorders-drug/ Published: 14 February, 2011, 11:31 US pharmaceutical companies get creative when it comes to disorders and drugs to treat almost anything, from canine depression to female sexual dysfunction. The American drug trade is a multi-billion-dollar business, and is only getting bigger. Meanwhile the industry has been accused of illegally pushing medicine onto the market, often endangering the lives of patients. In the US, the most common medication prescribed for dogs is to treat aggression and anxiety disorders. Pharmacists admit that Prozac works terrifically on dogs. Yes, there is such a thing as doggy Prozac, a beef-flavored version of the well-known "human" anti-depressant, government-approved and being proscribed by veterinarians for canines in crisis. "There is a significant population of dogs which is really suffering from separation anxiety," reveals veterinary behaviorist E'Lise Christensen, from NYC Vet Specialists. The drug company, one of the largest, is banking on that. They believe up to 17 per cent of US dogs are suffering from this mental affliction. It is an idea some would scoff at, and as Christensen says "I definitely understand being skeptical." "Companies are desperate to keep up their profit margin, and do things to keep the margin up, even though the number of new drugs that are important in the pipeline has diminished," argues Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen's Health Research. It turns out those companies do not need doggy drugs in order for critics to make that case. Medical researchers have crunched the numbers and found the pharmaceutical industry now tops the defense industry as the number one defrauder of the US government. "That was a finding that I didn't expect. No one had really ever looked at it before and it shows you how out-of-control really the pharmaceutical industry really is," Dr. Sidney Wolfe said. In some cases it is criminally out of control, perhaps helping this industry go from selling US$40 billion to $234 billion a year in prescription drugs. Over the last two decades, companies have been cheating and endangering patients. Their biggest violations are overcharging the government by billions and illegally marketing their drugs to treat conditions for which they have not proven safe or effective. One of the largest criminal penalties ever levied against an American corporation involved the drugs giant Pfizer. The illegal practices included essentially hiring positions despite the buzz about the drug, telling their colleagues to prescribe it for a condition it was not approved for. And when it comes to the drug companies, disease-pushers may not be an unfair way of describing them, as well as drug pushers -- that is what one filmmaker found when tracing a newly-minted disorder. "Female sexual dysfunction itself is something the pharm industry really pushed for and had a hand in creating," believes Liz Canner, filmmaker of Orgasm Inc. That is the conclusion Canner came to after following the process of a drug company developing female Viagra. She says only a small number of women need it, but the company has other plans. "Their marketing and the amount of money they're pouring into it really says they're trying to sell this to the whole population," insists Liz Canner. And with commercials for prescription drugs airing on TV in the US, companies are in a position to do just that. With billions being made and not much to lose, critics say even in the case of crime, for this industry nothing is likely to change. "Unless people go to jail unless the fines are much larger than they have been the companies will find that it's cheaper to cheat" Dr. Sidney Wolfe said. Companies that stop short of nothing to find some-syndrome, someone or something new to medicate. United States leads world in taking psychotropic drugs

03:36
The United States has a passion for pills, being the world's biggest users of psychotropic drugs, consuming 60 per cent of them. And pharmaceutical firms are keen to keep cashing in on the multibillion-dollar market, even if it costs people's health. America is regarded as a country with a prodigious appetite for consumption. Today, a widespread fondness for pharmaceuticals has turned the US into a nation of pill-poppers. With over $14 billion in annual sales, antipsychotics remain the top-selling therapeutic class of prescription drugs in the US. Dr. Harriet Fraad believes Big Pharma has manufactured a climate of insanity by manipulating and even creating illness for capital gain. "One of the things that drives Big Pharma is to find a diagnosis that is very vague, so that everybody can fall into that," she told RT. "Everybody is sad sometimes. There are good reasons. The point is to market pharmaceuticals. And the advertising strategy is to have vague diagnosis and then find wiggle room so that they apply to everyone." The US is the only Western country that allows direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs. For example, an ad for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder warns that untreated patients will likely end up divorced. Another commercial promises to make you happier, but side-effects may include dry mouth, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, diarrhea, nausea and sleepiness." Critics also say Big Pharma uses its financial muscle to ply doctors with gifts, cash kick-backs and research funding in exchange for endorsing or prescribing the latest and most lucrative drugs. Harriet Fraad says there is a whole network of doctors hustling these drugs. "If a patient comes in with a knee injury and says, 'I'm so sad.' Oh, are you depressed? Hey write a prescription! They're given out like M&Ms." Last year, prescription drug abuse became the number one cause of accidental death, with more than 30,000 Americans overdosing. For instance, Seroquel, medication for bi-polar disorder, generated $4.4 billion in sales last year.Listing all its side-effects requires 49 seconds of air-time. The number of children consuming antipsychotic medication has doubled in the past decade. Millions of American adolescents are taking drugs like Adderall, doled out by doctors to treat hyperactivity. Author of Surviving America's Depression Epidemic, psychologist Bruce Levine, told RT that, "All these drugs are very similar to illicit or illegal drugs, except they're more dangerous. Marijuana is a little safer. But kids have no choice." Pfizer, America's most profitable multinational pharmaceutical company makes anti-depressants not only for people, but also for animals. In 2009, the pharmaceutical giant paid $2.3 billion to settle civil and criminal allegations over illegally marketing one of its drugs. It was the largest healthcare fraud settlement and criminal fine in US history. That being said, the fine amounted to less than three weeks of Pfizer's drug sales. "The money is so huge that the fines are immaterial. They're not thinking about the social effects of what they're doing. They're thinking about the profits they accrue," says psychotherapist Harriet Fraad. The pharmaceutical industry remains the most profitable business in the US. More success and financial gain for the companies will always remain possible as long as more Americans are encouraged to take drugs.

Reimagining pharmaceutical innovation | Thomas Pogge at TEDxCanberra

18:10
By reforming harmful supranational regulations, Thomas Pogge is developing a complement to the patent system to stimulate pharmaceutical innovations that would be accessible, without delay, to poor and affluent patients alike around the world. In this talk at TEDxCanberra 2011, ANU and Yale academic and ethicist, Professor Thomas Pogge outlines an idea that could revolutionise health outcomes and distribution of pharmaceuticals in both the developed and developing world. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).

What is KI (Please Don't Say Radiation Pills)

06:37
http://www.tngun.com/what-is-potassium-iodide-please-dont-say-radiation-pills/ http://www.amazon.com/iOSAT-Potassium-Iodide-Tablets-130/dp/B00006NT3A/Sheschinc-20 Part of my job duties as a emergency planner involve training first responders in radiation safety. So after the Fukushima Nuclear plant emergency I was acutely aware of all the bad advice and rumors floating around about Potassium Iodide (KI). Now that a lot of that fear has subsided, and we can talk about it objectively and without our eyes bulging out in fear, I want to take a second and talk about what KI actually does. In the spirit of openness I want to say that I have some KI at my house, and since my in-laws live within 10 miles of a nuclear plant I gave them some also. But I have it out of an abundance of caution than fear. I doubt (and statistics bear it out) neither I nor my in-laws will ever have to use it. Radioactivity, or the process of an element giving off radioactivity, is a chemical property of a material. Since it is a chemical property, it behaves in predicable manners and we can take precautions against its effects. In order to survive your body needs certain things. Oxygen and water are the two basic things, but your body also needs chemical building blocks to perform a variety of biological processes. We get these through food. Just like we drink OJ when we are sick to get the vitamin C, or Milk for strong teeth and bones. We need iodide for proper production of thyroid hormones. These thyroid hormones are most closely linked with growth and mental development. Unfortunately not all people receive enough iodide to provide for their bodies' needs. As a matter of fact, the land around the Great Lakes was known as the "goiter belt" because the soil is particular iodine-deficient, this resulted in higher incidence of goiter among residents. Luckily, iodized salt has almost entirely wiped out iodine deficiency in the U.S. Since one of the isotopes of "fission products" created by nuclear fission (either in a reactor or in an explosion) is the radioactive form of iodine, it is possible that one of the radioactive products released in either a nuclear power plant disaster or in an attack using a nuclear weapon. If a person is exposed to radioactive iodine, and their thyroid needs iodine, the body will absorb the radioactive iodine and deposit it in the thyroid. The body cannot distinguish between the radioactive and non-radioactive isotopes. What KI does is fill the thyroid up with iodine. So if you take it BEFORE exposure to the radioactive iodine, it makes sure there is no room for your body to store the radioactive isotope. That way the bad stuff flows right out of your system as waste. The problem is that KI is often sold as a "radiation pill", so that people don't know its specific use. It only protects against one chemical in a very specific way. It does nothing to prevent damage by radiological exposure, or contamination by materials other than radioactive iodine. Some people are also allergic to KI, and while some people that are allergic to shellfish are also allergic to KI, it is possible to be allergic to one without the other, and since I am not a doctor, I am not capable of telling you what you are or aren't allergic to. I would suggest that if you think exposure to radioactive iodine is something you would like to prepare for, you might ask your doctor to test to see if you are allergic to iodine. You don't have to be scared of radiation, but you do have to have a little knowledge and respect for what it can and cannot do.

16. Evolution of Tobacco Law

47:20
Environmental Politics and Law (EVST 255) This lecture continues the previous class's discussion of tobacco law. In this class, Professor Wargo highlights the unique issues of freedom of choice and freedom of speech that tobacco regulation create, as tobacco regulation restricts individual choice and corporate freedom of speech via advertising restrictions. Tobacco law also illustrates the difficulties of managing environmental hazards in the face of an industry with the resources to fund its own research and to fight regulation at every step of the process. The passing of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act in 2009 is held up as a success story in tobacco regulation, as it places stricter standards on tobacco corporations. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Gilead - Drug Prices To Die For (8/1/11)

00:31
Last year Gilead generated over $6.5 billion in revenues for AIDS drugs, but has refused to lower prices for cash-strapped AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs). Today, more than 8,600 Americans are on ADAP waiting lists to receive lifesaving medicines. Due to the high price of AIDS drugs these ADAP programs can no longer serve all the people who rely on them.

We have a problem in Arkansas

13:13
Our teenagers are dying from recreational prescription drug abuse. One young prescription drug addict says simply, " Prescription drugs are just too easy to get." Surprisingly, seventy per cent of the Rx drugs kids experiment with come from our own homes. Juvenile Judges say it is not uncommon to see twelve year olds stealing drugs from their parents and selling them at school. Teenagers who take drugs prescribed for someone else and mix with other drugs or alcohol often end up in hospital ERs or on autopsy tables. At the request of the Arkansas State Drug Director and Arkansas Rotarians, Jones Television's Special Projects Producer, Carolyn Long, and Associate Producer Lance Herring reveal the shocking statistics that substantiate this crisis and, most importantly, what each of us can do to contribute to the solution. By monitoring our prescription drugs, securing them and by participating in Arkansas Rx Drug Takebacks, all of us can make a life-saving difference.

MANUFACTURING DRUG BABIES - (Doctors in denial) XANAX, KLONOPIN, ATIVAN (BENZODIAZEPINES)

07:10
Is your baby a "drug baby?" Benzodiazepines have been found to be one of the most addictive drugs known to mankind, yet they somehow remain legal, even in light of numerous studies tying withdrawal in newborns to their mothers prescribed medications. Over 10 million Americans are prescribed benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium & Librium each year, with an apathetic/arrogant medical community which seems to be doing little to curtail the epidemic. If you or a loved one are addicted to "benzos", and particularly if you're pregnant, please research the links below for knowledge. Your baby shouldn't have to experience weeks, or months of withdrawals from this tremendously underestimated drug. "As the father of someone going through benzo withdrawal, and a physician, I find it incredibly frustrating that our physician networks and knowledgebase in the U.S. is almost totally lacking. I am quite aware that the pharmaceutical industry, through marketing, has more effect on many physician decisions than the available literature. Any physician unwilling to appraise themselves of the great offering of articles on Benzo withdrawal and dependence/tolerance issues should not pretend to offer treatment. I would go to your visits armed with 1 or 2 Ashton papers or others published in scholarly journals, and insist they read them. Understanding that, I think the medical community in most places in the U.S., still believes benzos are more benign than aspirin. I feel great regret that I was not better educated about the benzo affliction with literature from England from the early 80s. Unfortunately this battle is against a large, well-financed industry that is bent on selling drugs. My goal would be a targeted campaign to get primary care doctors in the U.S. to understand the scourge of Benzo therapy and the difficulties and complexities of withdrawal. I am no expert, but have been greatly educated by my son who has been on benzos for 9 years and is currently tapering off Valium." Pharmacy Pharmacy most effective advertising campaigns Iwankiewicz dm2agency Stacewicz

01:48
PHARMACY Making effective advertising campaigns in the pharmaceutical branch requires two-way thinking, because an effective campaign is aimed at two, completely different target groups. On one hand there are patients (medicines from the OTC group), for whom one needs the art of showing emotional benefits because the rational benefits often do not distinguish the product from the competition. On the other hand there are doctors, who need facts, tests and concrete information.Nevertheless, the message and its „frame" must be consistent in case of both target groups With such a formula to prepare a campaign, the agency's team built its experience while cooperating with Polfa Kutno, Polpharma, Virapolfarm or Boots Healthcare Itd (TV, press, radio, BTL, PR, media relations). For many years we have specialized in creative launching on the market and consequent maintaining of the image of pharmaceutical products from the RX group. This task requires huge discipline because very specific, branch media are chosen, because we have to have a consistent vision that can be developed for many years ahead, because the content is very difficult to communicate. We take care that the content does not appear only as a graph and numbers -- which makes the target group, the concern, happy (due to the sales). The following biggest pharmaceutical concerns have trusted us: PLIVA, American Barr group, where we performed global marketing activities for all the medicines of the cardiological department and our solutions were implemented also outside the Polish market. Effective marketing campaigns examples between 2007 and 2009 are available here; Sandoz (division of generic drugs of the Novartis concern), in which we dealt with both RX and OTC drugs (read more); Schwarz Pharma -- a German pharmaceutical company where the members of the agency's team created new trends for the promotion of cardiological, circulatory and pulmonological drugs for 9 years; TEVA Pharmaceutical -- international pharmaceutical holding, for which we made the most effective advertising campaigns that were leaders in their categories: Sumemed -- a modern antibiotic or Atorvox -- a cardiological drug (read more). The output of the agency is also preparing and running particular events. They were particular because they were events which supported the promotion of a drug among doctors and they were aimed at trade representatives of pharmaceutical concerns. Nevertheless, only events which go beyond standards, with a huge dose of creativity contribute to „giving positive energy to the sellers" (social influence marketing). Entering into the concern's structures also allows us to make effective actions in the range of internal corporative communication (internal PR, company's publishing houses, effective social media marketing, activities concerning Personal Development). Apart from the companies mentioned above, the agency's members have added to the portfolio customers like MSD, Beafour Ipsen, Lekam, GlaxoSmithKlime.

8. Limits of the Neoclassical Synthesis

48:27
Moral Foundations of Politics (PLSC 118) Although the harm principle as introduced in the last lecture seems straightforward at first glance, today Professor Shapiro discusses its ambiguities. If it "must be calculated to produce evil to someone else," who will be doing the calculations? Second, what does "calculated" mean? Does committing harm imply mens rea, or should strict liability be observed? The class discusses such issues as prostitution, free trade, same-sex marriage, statutory rape, Good Samaritan laws, marital rape, discrimination, and tort adjudication (specifically the 1950s case on thalidomide). Professor Shapiro concludes that in calculating harm, one must make political choices, which places the Enlightenment ideal of replacing politics with science in jeopardy. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Pharmacy HD most effective advertising campaigns Iwankiewicz dm2agency Stacewicz

01:49

Libby Baney, of the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies at the 2011 PSM Interchange

13:01
Libby Baney, advisor for the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies, spoke as part of Panel 2, "Combating Drug Counterfeiting & Sales." Ms. Baney provided some sobering statistics on the state of counterfeit online pharmacies in the US. There are any where from 60,000 to 90,000 active online drug sellers, and NABP says that 96% are illegal - NOT in compliance in with US laws. NABP is the expert organization for legitimate medication. How do you know what an illegal online drug seller is? 1. No prescription required. Prescription drug abuse increase and no medical supervision by doctor or pharmacist. 2. Unregulated or unapproved prescription drugs available. Counterfeit, adulterated, expired and substandard meds are available which may be dangerous and ineffective. 3. Lack of valid/required pharmacy licenses. Not really a pharmacy, it could just be a warehouse or a basement. Patients are at risk: 1 in 6 Americans by medication online without a valid prescription (36 million people). Between 50 and 90% of all medicines bough on the internet may be counterfeit. A study estimates that 90% of all medications sold online worldwide may be counterfeit. 02:17

So grab a chair and pay attention cos' you are going to hear the truth about how to ensure that these attacks never happen again. They have got it all wrong: most medical doctors still claim Panic Attacks or Panic Symptoms can be treated only by using medication. But here is a fact: Just controlling the symptoms is not enough, cos' it is not a permanent cure! Statistics show that over 30% of the American population will suffer at least one panic attack in their lifetime -- and over 4 million people experience these attacks in the USA alone in any one year -- nearly 90 million in the world annually ! So why do therapists so stubbornly insist that medication is the cure??? Here is the real truth: They just can't make a profit promoting anything else! At least not as much money as you could make through making you pay for expensive therapy sessions and selling drugs and pills over the counters. Here is a secret: In many cases, you don't have to use medication, you just don't have to fill your body with chemicals that might have all kinds of side effects. Here is another secret that can help you eliminate your Panic Symptoms: recent studies have clearly shown a tight connection between getting professional psychological treatments and experiencing relief in panic symptoms. Hard to believe but it is true, this solution works in most cases. But... it is very expensive, of course. But I know of yet another secret , a solution that combines no usage of drugs or any medication, and does not involve spending so much money on private medical sessions. Following this program is easy, it is fully supported by medical professionals -- including psychiatrists and psychologists, and the cost is more than reasonable .Not only the program is chemicals free, it will improve your overall health and feeling in a very short time. The link on the bottom of this video will tell you all about it, and I suggest you visit it right now to discover what the fuss is all about! Wise Woman Herbals: The impact of EWTF training

03:38
Wise Woman Herbals, established in 1989, manufactures and distributes traditional whole herb dietary and health supplements. When Wise Woman ran into a workforce training problem, they approached their Local Workforce Investment Board, the Lane Workforce Partnership (LWP) for help. Due to a change in federal regulations, several of Wise Woman Herbals key products were designated by the FDA as Over the Counter‖ (OTC) Pharmaceutical Drugs. In order to continue production in 2010, Wise Woman Herbals would need training to become an FDA regulated pharmaceutical manufacturer. In addition, the company needed to become compliant with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices and Canada's Natural Health Products Directorate in order to increase market share. LWP provided the resources for Wise Woman Herbals to quickly train and certify all 21 of their employees in these regulatory compliance areas. A resulting increase in sales and market share enabled Wise Woman Herbals to open up 5 new job positions. "The employer workforce training grant enabled Wise Woman Herbals to achieve compliance with new US and Canadian federal regulations and as a direct result we were able to expand our market overseas and add 5 jobs." Why Not? -------- (Note: Special thanks to Julian Jordan for the official Spanish translation, which is now available under captions.) Script for Powerful Presentations: Simply Stated By Marc Strong Around the world every day, thousands if not millions of people give presentations. Some are great, and have a powerful impact on their audiences. Others...well, let's just say they're works in progress. This is Powerful Presentations: Simply Stated Meet Jim, an aspiring professional trying to make it in the world. Jim used to give presentations like just about everyone else he knew. PowerPoint was his tool of choice. He'd use it like an outline, with a header followed by bullet after bullet, and sometimes even sub-bullets! When he wanted to be fancy, he'd add what usually turned out to be an ineffective chart or sometimes a table. And when Jim wanted to really spice things up, he'd add...yep...clip art. Unfortunately, Jim's approach would often confuse and bore people. This was a problem because he had important things to say. And because it was dimming his prospects for success. Fortunately, Jim learned a better way and didn't stay in the dark for long. Perhaps most importantly, he now focuses on the story he wants to tell. In doing so, he tries to follow a simple structure, with a clear beginning, middle, and end that links together his various points and builds to his conclusion. When formulating his story, Jim uses a simple pad of paper or sicky notes. Staying low tech at this stage helps him think more creatively and stay outside the box. He then considers what tools will help him best tell his story. Jim sometimes opts to use a whiteboard, flip charts, handouts, or even no props at all. When it makes sense for him to use PowerPoint, he tries to remember the adage that sometimes "less is more." He doesn't dumb down his presentations, but he does try to limit each slide to one key idea. Or, depending on the content, he sometimes builds an idea incrementally so it's easy to follow. He looks for visual ways to tell his story, with minimal text, photos, and clear charts and graphs. Quote: "All the so-called "Secrets of success" will not work unless you do. -Unknown" Sometimes he'll use quotes, but he tries to remember that people can't read his slides and truly listen at the same time. Jim still uses plenty of text to help him remember what he wants to say, but he hides it in his notes that only he sees (show view notes screen). Jim's new approach takes more time, energy, and rehearsal, but it's been well worth the effort. His audiences are now much more engaged and better understand and remember his presentations. And, as if that weren't enough...(congrats on the promotion)...his pocketbook doesn't mind either. (Pause) This has been Powerful Presentations: Simply Stated. Open Innovation Part 3 - Where is the ROI (Return on Investment)?

06:59
Open Innovation is usually presented with a focus on ideas and technology and a look past of companies which has succeeded in advancing their ideas. What is missing is the ROI and an evaluation of an immediate cost (R&D) against future revenue (new products rolled out in 1-5 years). Where is the ROI in innovation? The ROI can be found in understanding the view from the offices of the financial managers and the sales managers. By maintaining a pipeline of new ideas and products, the company can maintain and grow income levels and maintain the stock price, which is critical to maintaining external financial relationships and stockholder relations. For sales management, new products mean new reasons to contact their customers and expand their relationships with these customers. Great ideas are great idea, but numbers are numbers and without maintaining corporate growth, you cannot maintain innovation.
