Open-book Management at New Belgium Brewery

11:10
Open-book Management at New Belgium Brewery Most Americans define "working" as getting paid to make money for somebody else. As parts of a centralized organization, many employees are directed by a manager who in turn reports to another upper level boss, which eventually leads up to the top with the CEO. Such a rigid hierarchy can make it difficult for lower level employees to have a true understanding of how the business is run, let alone any say in the company's overall direction. That isn't the case, however, for Colorado-based New Belgium Brewery. The company has been an intimate operation ever since founders Jeff Lebesch and Kim Jordan poured their first pint in 1991. Inspired by the local breweries he encountered on a family trip to Belgium, Lebesch began brewing in his own basement with a limited clientele of friends and family. As craft beers grew in popularity through the 1990s and 2000s, New Belgium emerged as one of the biggest brands in the industry with its flagship ale Fat Tire finding its way into bars not just in Colorado (or Lebesch's basement), but across the country. Even as the company has expanded into a nationally-recognized brand, New Belgium remains committed first and foremost to the people directly responsible for its success: its employees. From brewmasters to bartenders, the staff at New Belgium enjoys a level of empowerment that other runners in the rat race could only dream of. First of all, several operational divisions are almost completely decentralized. For example, New Belgium's quality assurance section contains no ranking manager to direct the staff. Instead, employees are trusted to make their own decisions if they find an opportunity to improve a product's quality. With less red tape to wade through, quality assurance is given more time to focus on the task at hand, thus improving productivity significantly. But implementing such an open system is a risky endeavor. Employees need to be self-motivated and possess a legitimate interest in the overall performance of the company, or else productivity can suffer instead of soar. New Belgium keeps its staff tethered to the business's well being by turning them into shareholders. After an employee has worked at the brewery for a year, he or she is given a small slice of the company to own. As New Belgium profits go up, the value of that employee's share goes up as well. Since employees are not only staff but also shareholders, New Belgium treats them as such with regular updates on the status and future of the company. Called "open-book management," employees are trained in basic financial practices and business lingo, so that Lebesch and Jordan can deliver board of directors-style meetings with their staff that informs them about the company's performance and upcoming plans. Employees are even given a chance to discuss upper management's decisions and to chime in with their own ideas. Keeping staff apprised of the company's daily dealings motivates employees because it teaches staff the importance of how their specific job fits into the overall fabric of the company. Employees are in turn more aware of their own significance in the grand scheme of the brewery, making them more conscious of the decisions they make on the job every day. The overall environment of the American workplace is changing rapidly. As employees become more educated and managers more open to staff discussion, management structures like New Belgium's could become much more common.

Agile Entrepreneurs | Learn to Adapt to Market Changes

02:05
http://jerrymitchellblog.com/ Q: Tell me about the -- previously you said that in every company the plans change. Six months in and the company looks different than it began six months after that. What is it about the planning process that is so inefficient that the. A: They're not inefficient. The market changes. I started out with some engineers -- my first startup company was in of San Diego, it was startup company that developed the first Ticketron terminals which would emulate any computer in the world. And looking at it in that sense, Ticketron was in its infancy you know, saying that this isn't a good market for us. My engineers, because they and the founders had come out of Control Data in La Jolla. They knew process control computers. Let's build an emulator for a process control unit and you look at the market and say, "let's build one to emulate the IBM 1130 computer" and we went after the IBM marketplace. But what changed, we had a business plan so we are going to be making terminals. I started this company with the graphic display stuff that we started before the CAD-CAM industry. Met a bunch of people that had written some software for logic simulation; you couldn't -- the cost that would go into making a prototype was very expensive. After going out and selling that product to a lot of people and having a lot of people saying, wow this is a great simulator and all we got to do now is take this computer, put this stuff on here, put it on a workstations on here and we can sell this software for a quarter of a million dollars and you'd get a million dollars out of it. So we changed and I think people have to change. I think entrepreneurs who have a single product in their mind fail because they don't know how to go to the next product as the market changes. The product's changing very rapidly in the technology area today, so you have to be attuned to it and say okay, I've got this product. The other problem and what I have done in my consulting business is I look at people who have existing technology and take them into new markets. If the product can be applied here, why can't it be applied somewhere else? I think people don't look at it that way.

New Belgium Plans 2015 Launch

03:00
New Belgium Brewery is set to open construction in West Asheville soon.Passersby on Craven St. might not see much on their side of the fence, but on the other side, some see a world of possibilities. The general manager can't wait to see that facility get off the ground. Lately, his company has faced rumors that the brewer is backing out of Asheville.Way back in the spring we announced we were going to delay construction for 8 months, says GM Jay Richardson. So with no activity on the site, I think it's quite natural to question whether it was really gonna happen. It was never a question for us.Richardson says beer production at their site in Fort Collins, Colorado had a lot to do with the launch date of Asheville's facility. We're able to make beer in Asheville right when we've reached capacity in Fort Collins. Richardson explains. Their goal now is to start making beer in the mountains by December of 2015.This brewery will be able to produce 500-thousand barrels of beer a year, says Richardson. The company says it will continue site work next month in preparation for groundbreaking next spring. We've largely focused on dirt work, preparing the site for construction, Richardson tells us.In next two years, New Belgium hopes those doubts will disappear. We can't wait to get started, Richardson says. We can't wait for the fruition of all the energy. The company will eventually have 140 employees here in Asheville. Job listings should be posted on their web site around mid-2015.

Production Arts

01:47
Performing Arts and accompanying Production Arts (Technical Theatre) programmes have a long and successful history at Kendal College, propelling many students into performance and production careers. The Performing Arts and Technical Theatre department at Kendal College has strong links with many North West venues, promoters, technical production companies and arts organisations including The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and The Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness on Windermere. As a performance student you will not be required to undertake any production arts (technical theatre) work, although opportunities exist should you wish to pursue them. This provides performing arts students with the industry experience and opportunity to perform major productions supported by students studying technical theatre and music courses. Our performing arts teachers have extensive, up to date, commercial experience in acting, singing, dance and directing. Our technical production tutors have a very broad range of experience in technical theatre production, stage management, large scale event management, venue management and promotion, stage/scenic design and construction, live music production, music tour management and film production. Our College is one of the few in the North West able to offer automated lighting tuition and WYSiWYG lighting design, which is carried out in collaboration with The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal. Why study performing arts at Kendal College? Last year the College opened a dedicated £1.7million performance space called The Box, which provides a professional theatre venue for performing arts and technical theatre students. College staff have significant industry experience and the ability to develop each individual's emerging strengths through a supportive 'Drama School' approach to the curriculum, which has a production driven schedule from the word go! Kendal College's 'end of year shows' have become a regular highlight of the Brewery Arts Centre's summer programme due to the high quality of production. Why study production arts (technical theatre) at Kendal College? Students are responsible for every aspect of the production including planning, stage management and technical operation. Led by industry experienced staff, the technical theatre courses follow a production driven schedule, heavily collaborating with performing arts, music and art departments to support theatre, dance, music gigs and catwalk shows. Working on productions at the Brewery Arts Centre and live music at a range of music festivals are just some of the projects that give you the opportunity to operate in a professional environment and gain invaluable experience. This offers unique opportunities for students to operate and perform in a professional environment and make a contribution to the development of the creative and cultural industries in the region and beyond.

But how to do this with the NAV development environment that is not integrated with Visual Studio? MVP Luc van Vugt will give you a resume of what he has been doing for years now: integrating TFS and NAV. Next to TFs itself a number of interfacing tools will be discussed and demonstrated. Michelle Alexander: Locked Out of the American Dream

35:26
After civil rights lawyer Michelle Alexander published her book The New Jim Crow in 2010 on our dehumanizing system of incarceration, she ignited a national conversation about justice in America and sparked a movement. In her book, Alexander explores how the war on drugs, "get-tough" sentencing policies and racism has created a caste system similar to that of our segregationist past. Since then, Alexander has traveled the country to meet advocates and everyday Americans working to end mass incarceration in America — home to 25 percent of the world's prisoners, despite representing only five percent of the world's population. She tells Bill that she has seen a grassroots movement brewing in communities across the country, "There are enormous victories that are being achieved precisely because the people whom we have written off and viewed as disposable are reclaiming their voice, standing up, speaking out, organizing even as they struggle to survive."

EU Commission to propose shareholders vote on executive pay BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission plans to propose legislation by the end of this year that would give shareholders in EU companies a mandatory vote on executives' pay. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/businessNews/~3/ewE4fpFwkh0/us-eu-pay-idUSBRE9250WM20130306 Microsoft fined $731 million in Europe for violating browser choice commitments The European Commission on Wednesday fined Microsoft (MSFT) €561 million, equal to roughly $731 million, for failing to properly inform users of alternative Web browser options. The company was required to offer users a browser choice screen in Windows 7 that would allow them to easily choose their preferred Web browser, however it failed to do so from May 2011 through July 2012. The Commission found that more than 15 million Windows users in Europe did not see this screen over the course of a year. Microsoft acknowledged its mistake, noting that it takes "full responsibility for the technical error that caused this problem and have apologized for it." The company does not plan to appeal the fine. BRISBANE STORM - Rolling Wave. Nov 14 2013

08:49
A couple storm cells brewed up over Brisbane, 1st being quite tame but the 2nd brewed up quite an impressive front as it moved over Brisbane. Reports of this slim storm being about 200 kilometers long. For the main part of Brisbane, with the ever increasing threatening sky, Brisbane was spared the brunt of it, just dealt some heavy rain and one great spectacle, but it was a different story for some parts of the agricultural areas of South East Queensland. For the areas of Darling Downs and the Lockyer Valley, they got a hammering. As i mentioned a long time ago in another video, these areas are like "The Salad Bowl" of Queensland. Quoted from Wikipedia: "The Lockyer Valley is an area of rich farmlands that lies to the west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and east of Toowoomba. The Lockyer Valley is rated among the top ten most fertile farming areas in the world as mentioned in page 13 of the Lockyer Valley Community Recovery Plan 2011. The intensively cultivated area grows the most diverse range of commercial fruit and vegetables of any area in Australia and is often referred to as "South East Queensland's Salad Bowl". To read of farmers, having crops only laid down, planted a week or so ago and to see them destroyed is pretty dam hard on the farmer, not only the farmer but the city dwellers as well. Destroyed food and crops brings scarcity, with scarcity comes price rises. Article in the Brisbane Times: ''Some had only been planted a week and some had been planted a month,'' he told 612 ABC Brisbane. ''It probably cost us $100,000 to plant that so there's that loss, plus the loss of not being able to harvest.'' Read more: http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/environment/weather/more-storms-and-rain-on-the-way-bureau-20131114-2xhsg.html#ixzz2kqfo5Mav There was also a huge amount of lightning, the skies were absolutely alive, "with 29,757 lightning strikes recorded by the Energex Lightning Tracker" No wonder these skies put on such a spectacular light show, loads of metallic oxides/salts being sprayed in the atmosphere, it has made these skies extremely conductive. With some classic weather events, its eyes to the sky and while most remain blind to what happens over head, just be warned, these storms, as we are seeing, not only here but globally, will pack quite a punch. While mainstream media continue to keep you in the dark, people you do need to be aware that these storms and weather events will be different, until this crap stops of aerosol spraying, geoengineering, weather modification etc etc, the weather you use to know, is no more natural. Its incredible to hear so many are now noticing the weather seems different but not sure how or why. BC3 Outdoor Adventure Time

16:09
How do you lead and manage a two day camping, hiking, and canoeing adventure? Students in the Outdoor Adventure Program Management at Butler County Community College did just that. They learned the importance of planning, logistics, safety, outdoor travel, meal planning, working as a team, dealing with the environment, and leadership. The trip consisted of overnight tent camping at Clear Creek State Park (CCSP). On the first day, students hiked five miles on the Tadler Run Trail. On day two, they paddled six miles on the Clarion River from the Heath Access back to CCSP campground. During their free time, students had the opportunity to just relax, fish, play corn hole, slack line, and enjoy spending time talking around the camp fire.
