Date rape drugs: Facts vs. myths explained | FACTUAL FEMINIST
How common is drug-facilitated sexual assault? Should women really live in constant fear of GHB, or "roofies?" Women are often taught to take precautions at parties, because allegedly, predators are waiting to slip a colorless, odorless, incapacitating substance into their drinks. But is this a serious threat, an urban myth, or something in between? Deputy Factual Feminist Caroline Kitchens examines the statistics behind the stories. Have you asked a friend to watch your drink because you’re afraid to leave it alone, even for a moment? Women are often taught to take these precautions, because there are supposedly predators waiting to slip a colorless, odorless, incapacitating substance into our drinks. How common is drug-facilitated sexual assault? Should women really live in constant fear of roofies? That’s coming up next on the Factual Feminist. Hi, I’m Caroline Kitchens, in for Christina Hoff Sommers, who will return next week. Last month, a story about a predatory fraternity at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee made headlines. After a Tau Kappa Epsilon party, three women became severely intoxicated and were taken to the hospital. All three of these women had been marked with red X’s on their hands when they arrived at the party. That’s all it took for accusations of a color-coded date-rape drug conspiracy to unfold. Finally, Ashe Schow at the Washington Examiner looked at the facts. She found that there was no evidence that the X’s had anything to do with labeling women for the date rape drug. At least one woman marked with a red X mentioned in a Journal Sentinel article had multiple drinks and didn’t end up hospitalized. As for the drugs? Police did find marijuana and Adderall when they searched the fraternity house. But no evidence of date rape drugs ever turned up. This story is not unique. Panic and dubious allegations about the date-rape drug are rampant. Everything from lip gloss to nail polish to coasters has been invented to protect women from rapists armed with roofies. But the evidence does not match the hype. In 2005, forensic scientists in the United Kingdom tested blood and urine for various drugs in more than 1,000 cases where drug-facilitated sexual assault was suspected. The scientists found that alcohol was the most commonly used substance, and it was usually consumed voluntarily. Only 21 of the cases—about 2%-- could be classified as potential drug-facilitated sexual assault cases. But even in these cases, the researchers warned that they couldn't determine whether or not the drugs were taken voluntarily. Numerous other studies from around the world have come to the same conclusion. An Australian study of 101 suspected cases found no toxicological evidence that a sedative had been added any drinks. The vast majority of suspected cases involve high levels of alcohol consumption and sometimes illicit drug use. But there is no evidence that covert drink spiking is widespread. A 2009 study in the British Journal of Criminology proclaimed that date rape drugs are largely an urban myth. But when the researchers spoke with college women, they found that their perception of the risk of being drugged did not match the reality. More than half of the British students surveyed said they personally know someone whose drink has been spiked. Students believed that date-rape drugs were more likely to lead to sexual assault than being drunk or walking alone in a dangerous area at night. The researchers concluded that students often “mistakenly linked sickness, blackouts and dizziness to poisoning by a stranger—when it was likely to be caused by excessive alcohol consumption.” So what does this all mean? Calling date rape drugs a “myth” may not be right. These drugs do exist, and there are some cases in which women are drugged and sexually assaulted. Watching over your drinks at the bar and abstaining from fraternity jungle juice might still be a good idea. But a reality check is in order. Date rape drugs: Fact vs myths explained #aei #feminism

What is Heroin? Heroin Facts and Effects
Looking for hope and help? (707) 942-6888 http://www.duffysrehab.com During the last decade, heroin use has grown at a far faster rate than other illegal drugs. In fact, it's exploded, (with) the number of users skyrocketing 50%. Heroin use may bring to mind graphic images of the epidemic of the 70's, (with)of homeless junkies shooting up in dark alleys and abandoned buildings. But today's heroin addict stands in stark contrast to that picture, as use has spread from urban streets to quiet suburbs. As pharmaceutical companies make prescription drugs more abuse resistant, many young middle class adults are moving from expensive drugs like OxyContin and Vicodin to heroin, which can be as cheap as $10/bag. While heroin might be cheaper and easier to access than prescription drugs, those who take it are exposing themselves to the world's most addictive substance. In fact, one in four people who try heroin become addicted. When you first take heroin, you experience an instant rush of excitement and pleasure, as heroin counterfeits your body's natural endorphins. However, it's impossible to recreate that first rush, as subsequent highs never match the intensity of the first time. That doesn't stop users from trying. Often addicts increase their intake to recreate that initial high. This is called "chasing the dragon." It results in thousands of deaths every year. The most frightening thing about overdosing on heroin is that you won't even know it's happening. When you overdose, heroin slows your breathing, causing you to suffocate under the weight of your own chest. By this time, it's too late. Sadly, the number of heroin deaths continues to increase. In the last decade, the number of teens overdosing from heroin more than doubled. And while in 1999, 2100 people died with heroin in their systems, by 2010, the number had increased to nearly 3100. That's 3100 families devastated by drugs. Heroin addiction does not disappear on its own. If you or a loved one is struggling with heroin use, seek help today.

Smoking, Drinking and Drug Use among Young People in England 2014
Since 1982 we've been speaking to young people, aged 11-15, in schools across England about how smoking, drinking and drug use affects their lives. We collect this information to make sure that the government, charities and health professionals make the right decisions about how to help young people. It also shows how things are changing over the years. This short animation shows some of our key findings from last year's study. By watching this animation you'll discover smoking facts, drug information and alcohol statistics relating to young people in England. For those based in other countries like the rest of Europe, the US and elsewhere, the information makes for a really interesting comparison. We'll answer questions like is there really a teenage drinking problem among young people? How aware are young people of the dangers of alcohol and much more. This animation makes interesting watching for healthcare professionals, youth workers, people working in drug and alcohol services, those involved in developing drug, alcohol and tobacco policy, and anyone with a broader interest in substance abuse and society.

Over the Counter Medicines - What You Need To Know
See much more honest health information at: http://www.rehealthify.com/ Rehealthify offers reliable, up-to-date health information, anytime, anywhere, for free. -- video script below -- Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are drugs you can buy without a prescription. Some OTC medicines relieve aches, pains and itches. Some prevent or cure diseases, like tooth decay and athlete's foot. Others help manage recurring problems, like migraines. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration decides whether a medicine is safe enough to sell over-the-counter. Taking OTC medicines still has risks. Some interact with other medicines, supplements, foods or drinks. Others cause problems for people with certain medical conditions. If you're pregnant, talk to your health care provider before taking any medicines. It is important to take medicines correctly, and be careful when giving them to children. More medicine does not necessarily mean better. You should never take OTC medicines longer or in higher doses than the label recommends. If your symptoms don't go away, it's a clear signal that it's time to see your healthcare provider. Food and Drug Administration

Drug-Eluting Stents: information and side effects
Drug-eluting stents are coated with drugs that are slowly released and help keep open a blood vessel/artery. The inside lining of the artery (the endothelium) grows over the metal surface of the stent and patients are put on anti-clotting medicines, such as Plavix and/or aspirin. In addition to the increased drug-eluting stent blood clot risk, patients also risk Plavix side effects, such as severe gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, heart attacks, strokes and death. Tik Tik Time Bomb
Each year around a thousand young women addicted to crystal methamphetamine, or tik, give birth to so-called tik babies in Cape Town. ‘€œI started smoking [heroine, dagga and tik] while I was 16 years old,’€ said Meggan Adams from the Cape Flats while filling her glass pipe with more of the white tik crystals. She is six-and-a-half-months pregnant with her second child. ‘€œWith my first child I was smoking five packets [of tik] a day ‘€“ one packet just wasn’t enough for me,’€ Meggan said. ‘€œThere were times, after I smoked, that I could feel the child being like hyperactive in my tummy.’€ Meggan has been living on the streets of Cape Town since she was a child, and despite her pregnancy, prefers to sleep out on the street. According to her, she doesn’€™t like spending time at home and would rather roam around, begging for money to buy food. ‘€œI’€™m very worried about her on the streets, very worried,’€ said Meggan’€™s mother, Amiena, who often comes to town to meet with her and to get some money from her to help support Meggan’€™s 5 year old son. A Health-e News documentary investigating the use of tik among pregnant women was produced by Johann Abrahams and first broadcast on Special Assignment (SABC 3) on Thursday 4 October 2012.

Design of a RESTful Web Information System for Drug Prescription | IEEE | IEEE projects 2014
Drug prescription and administration processes strongly impact on the occurrence of risks in medical settings for they can be sources of adverse drug events (ADEs). A properly engineered use of information and communication technologies has proven to be a promising approach to reduce these risks. In this study, we propose PHARMA, a web information system which supports healthcare staff in the secure cooperative execution of drug prescription, transcription and registration tasks. PHARMA allows the easy sharing and management of documents containing drug-related information (i.e., drug prescriptions, medical reports, screening), which is often inconsistent and scattered across different information systems and heterogeneous organization domains (e.g., departments, other hospital facilities). PHARMA enables users to access such information in a consistent and secure way, through the adoption of REST and web-oriented design paradigms and protocols. We describe the implementation of the PHARMA prototype, and we discuss the results of the usability evaluation that we carried out with the staff of a hospital in Florence, Italy. 10 Things You Didn't Know About Marijuana
Marijuana has been legalized in two states and approved for medical use in a whole bunch of others, the drug has become a much more typical topic of conversation. Here are 10 things to talk about. Dude. Since recreational marijuana has been legalized in some states and approved for medical use in a whole bunch of others, the drug has become a much more typical topic of conversation. Here are 10 not so common facts about cannabis you can use to dazzle your friends at your next gathering. Number 10. It hails from a celebrity family. Marijuana -- or, cannabis if you're so inclined -- and beer-making hops come from the same plant family. And yes, people have experimented with making beer out of marijuana. Many say the best route is to follow a dark ale recipe. Number 9. Pot has been to space. Last year a weather balloon hauled 95 seeds, a clone plant, and a joint 19 miles up into the air. As far as real space, the verdict is still out. Rumors that NASA researchers threw a couple of weed seeds into zero gravity growing chambers have been alluded to by one of the agency's former agricultural team members. Number 8. Cannabis is legit. There are by some estimates 2000 slang terms for marijuana -- weed, mary jane, pot, ganja, and, according to purists, marijuana itself is an unofficial and pejorative street lingo. Prior to it being vilified in the 20th century, it was referred to as cannabis. Number 7. Marijuana accounts for many arrests despite an increasingly liberal public policy. According to the FBI, legalization has done little to decrease the pot-related arrest rate of 1 every 42 seconds as of 2012. Number 6. Medical marijuana has been around since at least 2737 BC when its use was first recorded by Chinese Emperor Shen Nung. He enlisted its help in treating gout and managing rheumatism pains. Number 5. Canada was the first modern country to offer medical marijuana. They began dispensing it in 2003. Number 4. Up until 1942, the US dispensed it as well. Prescribing pot to relieve nausea, rheumatism, and labor pains began around 1850. Producers even had ads printed boasting the cost effectiveness and purity of their locally produced goods. Number 3. To overdose would take a superhuman ability. It's estimated that to pose a deadly threat to one's health 1500 pounds of weed would have to be consumed in a 15-minute period. Number 2. Presidents sometimes inhale. On the issue George W. Bush said, "I wouldn't answer the marijuana questions. You know why? Because I don't want some little kid doing what I tried." President Obama kept his response more succinct, saying about inhaling, "That was the point." Number 1. They sell marijuana smoothies in India. The drink is a simple yogurt and cannabis blend. Reportedly, it tastes horrible, but considering the dancing that follows, it seems to go down easily.
