10 Things You Didn't Know About Marijuana

02:56
Marijuana has been legalized in two states and approved for medical use in a whole bunch of others, the drug has become a much more typical topic of conversation. Here are 10 things to talk about. Dude. Since recreational marijuana has been legalized in some states and approved for medical use in a whole bunch of others, the drug has become a much more typical topic of conversation. Here are 10 not so common facts about cannabis you can use to dazzle your friends at your next gathering. Number 10. It hails from a celebrity family. Marijuana -- or, cannabis if you're so inclined -- and beer-making hops come from the same plant family. And yes, people have experimented with making beer out of marijuana. Many say the best route is to follow a dark ale recipe. Number 9. Pot has been to space. Last year a weather balloon hauled 95 seeds, a clone plant, and a joint 19 miles up into the air. As far as real space, the verdict is still out. Rumors that NASA researchers threw a couple of weed seeds into zero gravity growing chambers have been alluded to by one of the agency's former agricultural team members. Number 8. Cannabis is legit. There are by some estimates 2000 slang terms for marijuana -- weed, mary jane, pot, ganja, and, according to purists, marijuana itself is an unofficial and pejorative street lingo. Prior to it being vilified in the 20th century, it was referred to as cannabis. Number 7. Marijuana accounts for many arrests despite an increasingly liberal public policy. According to the FBI, legalization has done little to decrease the pot-related arrest rate of 1 every 42 seconds as of 2012. Number 6. Medical marijuana has been around since at least 2737 BC when its use was first recorded by Chinese Emperor Shen Nung. He enlisted its help in treating gout and managing rheumatism pains. Number 5. Canada was the first modern country to offer medical marijuana. They began dispensing it in 2003. Number 4. Up until 1942, the US dispensed it as well. Prescribing pot to relieve nausea, rheumatism, and labor pains began around 1850. Producers even had ads printed boasting the cost effectiveness and purity of their locally produced goods. Number 3. To overdose would take a superhuman ability. It's estimated that to pose a deadly threat to one's health 1500 pounds of weed would have to be consumed in a 15-minute period. Number 2. Presidents sometimes inhale. On the issue George W. Bush said, "I wouldn't answer the marijuana questions. You know why? Because I don't want some little kid doing what I tried." President Obama kept his response more succinct, saying about inhaling, "That was the point." Number 1. They sell marijuana smoothies in India. The drink is a simple yogurt and cannabis blend. Reportedly, it tastes horrible, but considering the dancing that follows, it seems to go down easily.

Smoking, Drinking and Drug Use among Young People in England 2014

04:30
Since 1982 we've been speaking to young people, aged 11-15, in schools across England about how smoking, drinking and drug use affects their lives. We collect this information to make sure that the government, charities and health professionals make the right decisions about how to help young people. It also shows how things are changing over the years. This short animation shows some of our key findings from last year's study. By watching this animation you'll discover smoking facts, drug information and alcohol statistics relating to young people in England. For those based in other countries like the rest of Europe, the US and elsewhere, the information makes for a really interesting comparison. We'll answer questions like is there really a teenage drinking problem among young people? How aware are young people of the dangers of alcohol and much more. This animation makes interesting watching for healthcare professionals, youth workers, people working in drug and alcohol services, those involved in developing drug, alcohol and tobacco policy, and anyone with a broader interest in substance abuse and society.

Around one in every 10 people will suffer from depression. Brain regions that control mood are often disrupted in depression. Antidepressant drugs or behavioral therapy can offer some relief. By understanding the brain better, our ability to treat depression should also get a boost. Watch the video to learn about the neural circuits affected in depression, and the molecular and cellular changes that might hold the key to treating it. Mechanism of Drug Addiction in the Brain, Animation.

Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Addiction is a neurological disorder that affects the reward system in the brain. In a healthy person, the reward system reinforces important behaviors that are essential for survival such as eating, drinking, sex, and social interaction. For example, the reward system ensures that you reach for food when you are hungry, because you know that after eating you will feel good. In other words, it makes the activity of eating pleasurable and memorable, so you would want to do it again and again whenever you feel hungry. Drugs of abuse hijack this system, turning the person’s natural needs into drug needs. The brain consists of billions of neurons, or nerve cells, which communicate via chemical messages, or neurotransmitters. When a neuron is sufficiently stimulated, an electrical impulse called an action potential is generated and travels down the axon to the nerve terminal. Here, it triggers the release of a neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft - a space between neurons. The neurotransmitter then binds to a receptor on a neighboring neuron, generating a signal in it, thereby transmitting the information to that neuron. The major reward pathways involve transmission of the neurotransmitter dopamine from the ventral tegmental area – the VTA - of the midbrain to the limbic system and the frontal cortex. Engaging in enjoyable activities generates action potentials in dopamine-producing neurons of the VTA. This causes dopamine release from the neurons into the synaptic space. Dopamine then binds to and stimulates dopamine-receptor on the receiving neuron. This stimulation by dopamine is believed to produce the pleasurable feelings or rewarding effect. Dopamine molecules are then removed from the synaptic space and transported back in to the transmitting neuron by a special protein called dopamine-transporter. Most drugs of abuse increase the level of dopamine in the reward pathway. Some drugs such as alcohol, heroin, and nicotine indirectly excite the dopamine-producing neurons in the VTA so that they generate more action potentials. Cocaine acts at the nerve terminal. It binds to dopamine-transporter and blocks the re-uptake of dopamine. Methamphetamine – a psychostimulant – acts similarly to cocaine in blocking dopamine removal. In addition, it can enter the neuron, into the dopamine-containing vesicles where it triggers dopamine release even in the absence of action potentials. Different drugs act different way but the common outcome is that dopamine builds-up in the synapse to a much greater amount than normal. This causes a continuous stimulation, maybe over-stimulation of receiving neurons and is responsible for prolonged and intense euphoria experienced by drug users. Repeated exposure to dopamine surges caused by drugs eventually de-sensitizes the reward system. The system is no longer responsive to everyday stimuli; the only thing that is rewarding is the drug. That is how drugs change the person’s life priority. After some time, even the drug loses its ability to reward and higher doses are required to achieve the rewarding effect. This ultimately leads to drug overdose.

Drug bust: China white and crystal meth uncovered in Taipei

01:01
This week Taipei police busted a prominent boss of a drug ring. The police have only released his nickname, calling him A-jin. They say that A-jin had at least six underlings who would sell drugs for him around the Taipei area. A-jin’s ring could potentially earn $100K US dollars per month. It must’ve really helped out with the household expenses as he’s a family man with a wife, two children, and a sick mother. A-jin took over the business from an old school buddy who had suffered a “stroke” and was no longer able to continue the drug dealing business. A-jin was such an entrepreneur that he even offered a $3K US dollar year end bonus to the drug dealing underling who sold the most smack! That’s equal to three months average salary for a masters degree holder in Taiwan, which these guys definitely weren’t. Whoopie! Taipei police said that they are still investigating as there may be others who are connected with the drug ring. Heroin, amphetamines and other hard drugs were found neatly packaged for distribution in the man’s office, along with guns, tasers, and a bunch of drug paraphernalia. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoWorld, where we animate the biggest headlines from around the world. Drug-Eluting Stents: information and side effects

06:28
Drug-eluting stents are coated with drugs that are slowly released and help keep open a blood vessel/artery. The inside lining of the artery (the endothelium) grows over the metal surface of the stent and patients are put on anti-clotting medicines, such as Plavix and/or aspirin. In addition to the increased drug-eluting stent blood clot risk, patients also risk Plavix side effects, such as severe gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, heart attacks, strokes and death.
