Stopping a Disastrous Plan with Science: the Bay Model

John Reber had a plan: to dam the San Francisco Bay. He convinced some politicians - and it took the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Bay Model they built in Sausalito, to prove him not just wrong, but dangerously wrong. British Military FINAL WARNING to invading Rus Air Force Aircraft Documentary

23:20
The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's aerial warfare force. Formed towards the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918,[3] it is the oldest independent air force in the world.[4] Following victory over the Central Powers in 1918 the RAF emerged as, at the time, the largest air force in the world.[5] Since its formation, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history, in particular, playing a large part in the Second World War where it fought its most famous campaign, the Battle of Britain.[6] The RAF's mission is to support the objectives of the British Ministry of Defence (MoD), which are to "provide the capabilities needed: to ensure the security and defence of the United Kingdom and overseas territories, including against terrorism; to support the Government’s foreign policy objectives particularly in promoting international peace and security."[1] The RAF describe its mission statement as "... [to provide] An agile, adaptable and capable Air Force that, person for person, is second to none, and that makes a decisive air power contribution in support of the UK Defence Mission."[7] The mission statement is supported by the RAF's definition of air power, which guides its strategy. Air power is defined as: "The ability to project power from the air and space to influence the behaviour of people or the course of events."[8] Today the Royal Air Force maintains an operational fleet of various types of aircraft,[9] described by the RAF as being "leading-edge" in terms of technology.[10] This largely consists of fixed-wing aircraft, including: fighter and strike aircraft, airborne early warning and control aircraft, ISTAR and SIGINT aircraft, aerial refueling aircraft and strategic and tactical transport aircraft. The majority of the RAF's rotary-wing aircraft form part of the tri-service Joint Helicopter Command in support of ground forces. Most of the RAF's aircraft and personnel are based in the UK, with many others serving on operations (principally Afghanistan) or at long-established overseas bases (Ascension Island, Cyprus, Gibraltar, and the Falkland Islands). Although the RAF is the principal British air power arm, the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and the British Army's Army Air Corps also deliver air power which is integrated into the maritime, littoral and land environments. History[edit] Main article: History of the Royal Air Force Further information: List of Royal Air Force operations Origins[edit] While the British were not the first to make use of heavier-than-air military aircraft, the RAF is the world's oldest independent air force: that is, the first air force to become independent of army or navy control.[4] It was founded on 1 April 1918, with headquarters located in the former Hotel Cecil, during the First World War, by the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). At that time it was the largest air force in the world. After the war, the service was drastically cut and its inter-war years were relatively quiet, with the RAF taking responsibility for the control of Iraq and executing a number of minor actions in other parts of the British Empire. The RAF's naval aviation branch, the Fleet Air Arm, was founded in 1924 but handed over to Admiralty control on 24 May 1939. The RAF developed the doctrine of strategic bombing which led to the construction of long-range bombers and became its main bombing strategy in the Second World War.[11] Second World War[edit] A later version of the Spitfires which played a major part in the Battle of Britain. Further information: Air warfare of World War II The RAF underwent rapid expansion prior to and during the Second World War. Under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan of December 1939, the air forces of British Commonwealth countries trained and formed "Article XV squadrons" for service with RAF formations. Many individual personnel from these countries, and exiles from occupied Europe, also served with RAF squadrons. By the end of the war the Royal Canadian Air Force had contributed more than 30 squadrons to serve in RAF formations, similarly, approximately a quarter of Bomber Command's personnel were Canadian.[12] Additionally, the Royal Australian Air Force represented around nine percent of all RAF personnel who served in the European and Mediterranean theaters.[13] The Avro Lancaster heavy bomber was extensively used during the strategic bombing of Germany. In the Battle of Britain in 1940, the RAF (supplemented by 2 Fleet Air Arm Squadrons, Polish, Czecho-Slovak and other multinational pilots and ground personnel) defended the skies over Britain against the numerically superior German Luftwaffe. In what is perhaps the most prolonged and complicated air campaign in history, the Battle of Britain contributed significantly to the delay and subsequent indefinite postponement of Hitler's plans for anvasion of the United Kingdom (Operation Sealion). The Largest Aircraft in The U.S. Military

51:38
The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a large military transport aircraft built by Lockheed. It provides the United States Air Force (USAF) with a heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability, one that can carry outsize and oversize cargos, including all air-certifiable cargo. The Galaxy has many similarities to its smaller C-141 Starlifter predecessor, and the later C-17 Globemaster. The C-5 is among the largest military aircraft in the world. The C-5 Galaxy had a complicated development; significant cost overruns were experienced and Lockheed suffered significant financial difficulties. Shortly after entering service, fractures in the wings of many aircraft were discovered and the C-5 fleet were restricted in capability until corrective work was conducted. The C-5M Super Galaxy is an upgraded version with new engines and modernized avionics designed to extend its service life beyond 2040. The C-5 Galaxy has been operated by USAF since 1969. In that time, it has been used to support US military operations in all major conflicts including Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan; as well as in support of allies, such as Israel during the Yom Kippur War and NATO operations in the Gulf War. The C-5 has also been used to distribute humanitarian aid and disaster relief, and support the US Space Shuttle program run by NASA. http://military-transport-aircrafts.blogspot.com

Putin puts a SHOW OF MILITARY POWER to show US Military who is boss

11:07
A great video of Russian military power in Russian military exercise. The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (Russian: Вооружённые Си́лы Росси́йской Федера́ции, tr. Vooruzhonnije Síly Rossíyskoj Federátsii) are the military service of Russia, established after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. On 7 May 1992, Boris Yeltsin signed a presidential decree establishing the Russian Ministry of Defence and placing all Soviet Armed Forces troops on the territory of the Russian SFSR under Russian control.[5] The commander-in-chief of the armed forces is the president of Russia. Although the Russian armed forces were formed in 1992, the Russian military dates its roots back to the times of the Kievan Rus'. The armed forces are divided into: the three "branches of Armed Forces" (вида вооружённых сил): the Ground Force, Air Force, and the Navy the three "separate troop branches" (Отдельные рода войск): the Strategic Missile Troops, the Aerospace Defense Forces and the Airborne Troops the Rear of the Armed Forces, which has a separate status of its own There are additionally two further "separate troop branches" maintained by the Ministry of the Interior, the Border Force and the Internal Troops. These are not normally included as branches of the "Armed Forces" but are nonetheless used in armed conflicts. The number of troops is specified by decree of the President of Russia. On 1 January 2008, a number of 2,019,629 units, including military of 1,134,800 units, was set.[6] In 2010 the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimated that the Russian Armed Forces numbered about 1,040,000 active troops and in the region of 2,035,000 reserves (largely ex-conscripts).[7] As opposed to personnel specified by decree, actual personnel in the forces and paid was reported by the Audit Chamber of Russia as 766,000 in October 2013.[8] As of December 2013, the armed forces are at 82 percent of the required manpower.[9] According to SIPRI, Russia spent nearly $72 billion on arms in 2011. Russia is planning further increases in its military spending, with draft budgets showing a 53% rise in real terms up to 2014. However, SIPRI adds that many analysts are doubtful whether the industry will be able to deliver on such ambitious plans after decades of stagnation following the collapse of the Soviet Union.[10] Structure[edit] The Defence Ministry of the Russian Federation serves as the administrative body of the Armed Forces. Since Soviet times, the General Staff has acted as the main commanding and supervising body of the Russian armed forces: U.S. expert William Odom said in 1998, that 'the Soviet General Staff without the MoD is conceivable, but the MoD without the General Staff is not.'[22] However, currently the General Staff's role is being reduced to that of the Ministry's department of strategic planning, the Minister himself, currently Sergey Shoygu may now be gaining further executive authority over the troops.[citation needed] Other departments include the personnel directorate as well as the Rear Services, railway troops, Signal Troops and construction troops. The Chief of the General Staff is currently General of the Army Valery Gerasimov. The Russian military is divided into three services: the Russian Ground Forces, the Russian Navy, and the Russian Air Force. In addition there are three independent arms of service: Strategic Missile Troops, Russian Aerospace Defense Forces, and the Russian Airborne Troops. The Air Defence Troops, the former Soviet Air Defence Forces, have been subordinated into the Air Force since 1998. The Armed Forces as a whole are traditionally referred to as the Army (armiya), except in some cases, the Navy is specifically singled out. Since late 2010 the Ground Forces as well as the Air Forces and Navy are distributed among four military districts: Western Military District, Southern Military District, Central Military District, and the Eastern Military District which also constitute four Joint Strategic Commands — West, South, Central, and East. Previously from 1992 to 2010, the Ground Forces were divided into six military districts: Moscow, Leningrad, North Caucausian, Privolzhsk-Ural, Siberian and Far Eastern and Russia's four fleets and one flotilla were organizations on par with the Ground Forces' Military Districts. These six MDs were merged into the four new MDs, which now also incorporate the air forces and naval forces. There is one remaining Russian military base, the 102nd Military Base, in Armenia left of the former Transcaucasus Group of Forces. It likely reports to the Southern Military District. The Navy consists of four fleets and one flotilla: Northern Fleet (HQ at Severomorsk) subordinated to Joint Strategic Command West. Baltic Fleet (HQ at Kaliningrad in the exclave of Kaliningrad Oblast) subordinated to Joint Strategic Command West.

A Bridge Too Far 1977 1080p World War II Sean Connery, Robert Redford HD

02:56:13
Operation Market Garden, September 1944: The Allies attempt to capture several strategically important bridges in the Netherlands in the hope of breaking the German lines. However, mismanagement and poor planning result in its failure. Director: Richard Attenborough Writers: Cornelius Ryan (book), William Goldman (screenplay) Stars: Sean Connery, Ryan O'Neal, Michael Caine . The true story of Operation Market Garden, the Allies attempt, in September 1944, to hasten the end of WW2 by driving through Belgium and Holland into Germany. The idea was for US airborne divisions to take the towns of Eindhoven and Nijmegen and a British airborne division, reinforced by a Polish airborne brigade, to take the town of Arnhem. They would be reinforced, in due course and in turn, by the British XXX Corps, land-based and driving up from the British lines in the south. The key to the operation was the bridges, as if the Germans held or blew them, the paratroopers could not be relieved. Faulty intelligence, Allied high command hubris and stubborn German resistance would ensure that Arnhem was a bridge too far.

Бауыржан Момышұлы | Bauyrzhan Momyshuly, USSR military commander, strategic and tactical.

04:15
Bauyrzhan Momyshuly 24 December [O.S. 11 December] 1910 – 10 June 1982) was a Kazakh-Soviet military officer and author, posthumously awarded with the titles Hero of the Soviet Union and People's Hero of Kazakhstan. Momyshuly was born in Orak Balga, a now abandoned Aul in the modern Zhualy Districtin southern Kazakhstan, to a family of nomadic herders from the Dulat tribe. He lived with his relatives until the age of thirteen, but spent his teenage years in Soviet boarding schools. After completing his secondary education in 1929, he worked as a teacher, a secretary of a district committee and as an assistant-prosecutor. He was later employed as a department chief in the Kazakh ASSR's Central Agency for Economic Planning. In November 1932, Momyshuly was conscripted for a two-year service in the Red Army, and posted as a cadet in the 14th Mountain Infantry Regiment. After his discharge, he studied a course in economics in the Leningrad Institute of Finance and worked in the Kazakh branch of the Commercial-Industrial Soviet State Bank. On 25 March 1936, Momyshuly was again called for military service, becoming a platoon commander in the Central Asian Military District's 315th Regiment. He remained in the military for the next two decades. In March 1937, the regiment was transferred to the Far Eastern Front in Siberia. While not subject to repression during the Great Purge, the remark "unreliable, with extreme nationalist views" was inscribed in his personal dossier in 1937. His biographer, Mekemtas Myrzakhmetov, believed this happened because Momyshuly was known to read the poetry of Magjan Jumabayev and works of other authors associated with the Alash Orda. In 1939, Momyshuly was assigned to command the 105th Infantry Division's artillery. From February 1940, he headed the 202nd Independent Anti-Tank Battalion, based in Zhytomyr. In January the following year, Lieutenant Momyshuly returned to Kazakhstan, serving in Alma-Ata's military commissariat. When Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June, he was appointed a battalion commander – Kombat – in the 1073th Regiment of the newly formed 316th Rifle Division, headed by the military commissar of the Kyrgyz SSR, Major General Ivan Panfilov. In September 1941, the division was sent to the front in Malaya Vishera, at the vicinity of Leningrad. During October, as the Wehrmacht advanced on Moscow, the 316th – now part of General Konstantin Rokossovsky's 16th Army – was transferred to the theater and tasked with defending the highway passing through the city of Volokolamsk and the surrounding area. Momyshuly's battalion was assigned an eight-kilometer-long sector along the Ruza River; Senior Lieutenant Momyshuly took part in 27 engagements during the defense of the Soviet capital. From the 16th to the 18th of November, he and his unit were cut off from the rest of the division in the village of Matryonino, yet managed to hold off the German forces and eventually broke out back to their lines. For its performances, the 316th was awarded the status of a Guards formation on 23 November, and named the Panfilov 8th Guards Rifle Division in honor of its fallen commander, who was killed in action on 18 November. In late November, Momyshuly was promoted to the rank of captain. Momyshuly participated in the Soviet counter-offensive and was severely wounded on 5 December, though he declined to be evacuated to receive treatment. In March 1942, war correspondent Alexander Bek arrived in the 8th Guards Division. During the spring of that year, Bek convinced Momyshuly, who was reluctant at first, to cooperate with him in writing a novel about the fighting in Volokolamsk, which would eventually be published in 1944 under the title Volokolamsk Highway. Momyshuly strongly disapproved of Bek's book, which he claimed to be an unrealistic depiction of events, and criticized the author relentlessly for the remainder of his life. In April 1942, his commanding officer approved his promotion to the rank of major. In August 1942, his superiors had submitted a highly positive report on his conduct, and he was recommended to be awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. The proposal was rejected. The poet Mikhail Isinaliev, a friend of Momyshuly, wrote that a former political officer from the 8th Guards told him that this was due to his Kazakh patriotism, which was regarded as dangerous nationalism by the unit's commissars. Momyshuly joined the Communist Party during the same year. In October, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. After eight months, he became a colonel. During 1943, due to the effects of his old injury, he was forced to rest in a hospital for a prolonged period. After being released from the hospital in March 1944, he underwent an advanced officers' course in the Voroshilov Academy. On 21 January 1945, Colonel Baurzhan Momyshuly was appointed as the commander of the 9th Guards Rifle Division, a unit of the 2nd Rifle Corp https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wi

It will protect America and Canada. Our North Atlantic Alliance is firm on this subject,” Hutchison added. Germany, Italy, Turkey, and the United States are RS framework nations, meaning they command the different regions in Afghanistan. They also represent some of the largest troop contributors to Resolute Support and the former International Security Assistance Force. Afghan Security Forces took over the lead for combat operations from ISAF in January, 2015, and RS became exclusively a TAA mission. In 2017, Afghan Security Forces denied the Taliban any of their stated battlefield objectives—preventing them from capturing a single provincial capital—and have continued to pressure insurgents across the country throughout the winter. “What we are seeing is a lowering of ambition of the Taliban,” said Gen. Nicholson. “Following the announcement of the U.S. South Asia Policy, the enemy made another decision to lower their ambition again and resort to terrorist attacks and to avoid the kind of fights where they have lost so heavily. So this exposes the hypocrisy of the Taliban, who every year talk about the desire to decrease civilian casualties and now are directly targeting civilians and taking credit for it.” Gen. Scaparrotti and the ambassadors also visited Train, Advise, Assist Commands North, West, and Capital. German-led TAAC-N in Mazar-e-Sharif includes 21 allied and partner nations and works closely with Afghan partners from the 209th Afghan National Army Corps, and the 707th and 808th Afghan National Police Zone. Italian-led TAAC-W in Herat advises Afghan partners from the ANA 207th Corps and 606th ANP Zone. Turkish-led TAAC-C advises Afghan forces securing Kabul, including the 111th Capital Division and Kabul City Police Center. “Afghan Security Forces continue to improve their expertise and capabilities day-by-day,” said Gen. Scaparrotti. “NATO remains committed to supporting them as they develop their capabilities, strengthen command and control, and prepare the next generation of military leaders.” At the NATO Summit in Warsaw, 2016, NATO Allies and Resolute Support operational partners committed to sustain the NATO-led Resolute Support, to continue national contributions to the financial sustainment of the Afghan security forces, and to strengthen the Enduring Partnership between NATO and Afghanistan through political dialogue and practical cooperation. At their meeting in November 2017, Defence Ministers from NATO Allies and Resolute Support operational partners committed to increase the strength of the Resolute Support Mission from around 13,000 to around 16,000 troops; they also confirmed they will continue to fund the Afghan Security Forces until at least 2020. In July, 2018, a NATO Summit will be held in Brussels where heads of state and government from NATO Allies are expected to reaffirm NATO’s continued commitment to Afghanistan. NATO’s support to the Afghan Security Forces and institutions is key to supporting the implementation of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s roadmap to further develop the Afghan security forces and institutions. The roadmap, unveiled by the Afghan National Unity Government in early 2017, outlines a plan for securing and maintaining control of 80% of the population, as well as committing to continuing reforms on good governance TAGS,NATO,SACEUR,Afghanistan

1945 BRITISH DOCUMENTARY BURMA CAMPAIGN WORLD WAR II 42464

21:54
Made in 1945, BURMA VICTORY is a British documentary about the Burma Campaign during World War Two. It was directed by Roy Boulting. The introduction to the film outlines the geography and climate of Burma, and the extent of the Japanese conquests. The film then describes the establishment of the South East Asian Command (SEAC) under Mountbatten, "a born innovator and firm believer in the unorthodox", and gives a comparatively detailed account of subsequent military events, including the Battle of Imphal-Kohima and Slim's drive on Mandalay, Arakan landings, the northern offensive of the Americans and Chinese under Stilwell, and the roles played by Chindits and Merrill's Marauders. The film ends with the capture of Rangoon and the Japanese surrender. The film focuses on the difficulties of climate, terrain, the endemic diseases of dysentery, malaria, etc., the vital role of air supplies, the shattering of the myth of Japanese invincibility and the secondary role of the Burma campaign in overall Allied strategy. This film represents a British look at the campaign and was the pet project of Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander, South-East Asia, and he planned it as a joint Anglo-American production. But this scheme foundered over the inability of the U.S. leadership and British to agree on the main theme of the film. The British wanted it to concentrate on the drive southwards to liberate Burma. The Americans, anxious not to be seen to be participating in the restoration of the British Empire, wanted to emphasize the heroic building of the Ledo Road and the drive northwards to relieve the Chinese. In the end the two sides went their separate ways. The Americans produced the Ronald Reagan narrated film "The Stilwell Road" and the British made "Burma Victory." It was the final production of the Army Film and Photographic Unit (AFPU) and was directed, like Desert Victory (1943), by Roy Boulting. Not released until after the war was over, it was hailed and promoted as ‘the real Burma film’. The Burma Campaign in the South-East Asian theatre of World War II was fought primarily between the forces of the British Empire and China, with support from the United States, against the forces of the Empire of Japan, Thailand, and the Indian National Army. British Empire forces peaked at around 1,000,000 land, naval and air forces, and were drawn primarily from British India, with British Army forces (equivalent to 8 regular infantry divisions and 6 tank regiments),[29] 100,000 East and West African colonial troops, and smaller numbers of land and air forces from several other Dominions and Colonies.[5] The Burmese Independence Army was trained by the Japanese and spearheaded the initial attacks against British Empire forces. The campaign had a number of notable features. The geographical characteristics of the region meant that factors like weather, disease and terrain had a major effect on operations. The lack of transport infrastructure placed an emphasis on military engineering and air transport to move and supply troops, and evacuate wounded. The campaign was also politically complex, with the British, the United States and the Chinese all having different strategic priorities. South East Asia Command (SEAC) was the body set up to be in overall charge of Allied operations in the South-East Asian Theatre during World War II. Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten served as Supreme Allied Commander of the South East Asia Command from October 1943 through the disbandment of SEAC in 1946. The Unknown War - Survival at Stalingrad - 03/05

The Unknown War - Survival at Stalingrad 03/05 Documentary series about 1941-45 The Great Patriotic War. Made in 1970's. Narrated by Burt Lancaster. Youtube Play-list: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=46C36E7EC5FC8324 Unknown War, The (Neizvestnaya Voyna) Episode 1 of 20 http://www.memocast.com/media.aspx?id=343417 Воин Красной Армии - Спаси! Red Army Warrior - Save (us)! Recognizing that German troops were ill prepared for offensive operations during the winter, the Stavka decided to conduct a number of offensive operations of its own to exploit this weakness, with the recognition that most of the German troops were redeployed elsewhere on the southern sector of the Eastern Front. Seen in post-war history as a pivotal strategic period of war that began the Second Period of the Great Patriotic War (19. November 1942 - 31. December 1943), these operations would open the Winter Campaign of 1942-1943 (19. November 1942 - 3. March 1943) taking on the strategic and operational planning structure below, employing several Fronts, and some 15 Armies. Soviet Order of Battle Southwestern, Don, Stalingrad Fronts Operation Uranus 19 November 1942 - 30 November 1942 Southwestern Front 1st Guards, 21st, 5th Tank, 17th Air Armies, and the 25th Tank Corps Don Front 24th, 65th, 66th, 16th Air Armies Stalingrad Front 28th, 51st, 57th, 62nd, 64th, 8th Air Armies Kotelnikovo Offensive Operation 12 December 1942 - 31 December 1942 Stalingrad Front 2nd Guards, 5th Shock, 51st, 8th Air Armies Middle Don Offensive Operation (Operation Little Saturn) 16 December 1942 - 30 December 1942 Southwestern Front Don Front Operation Koltso (English: Operation Ring) 10 January 1943 - 2 February 1943 Don Front 21st, 24th, 57th, 62nd, 64th, 65th, 66th, 16th Air Armies The Soviet counter-offensive planning used deceptive measures that eventually trapped and destroyed the 6th Army and other Axis forces around the city, becoming the second large scale defeat of the German Army during the Second World War. During the siege, the German, Italian, Hungarian, and Romanian armies protecting Army Group B's flanks had pressed their headquarters for support. The Hungarian Second Army, consisting of mainly ill-equipped and ill-trained units, was given the task of defending a 200 km section of the front north of Stalingrad between the Italian Army and Voronezh. This resulted in a very thin line, with some sectors where 12 km stretches were being defended by a single platoon. Soviet forces held several bridgeheads on the western bank of the river and presented a potentially serious threat to Army Group B. Similarly, on the southern flank of the Stalingrad sector the front south-west of Kotelnikovo was held only by the Romanian VII Corps, and beyond it a single German 16th Motorized Infantry Division. ...

Search & Destroy by 173rd Airborne Brigade: "Operation Kickoff" 1966 US Army, Vietnam War

14:55
more at http://news.quickfound.net/intl/vietnam_news.html Vietnam War: An overview of "Operation Kickoff" 173rd Airborne Brigade US Army search & destroy operations in the Mekong Delta South of Saigon in 1966. From "Your Army Reports" No. 4. NEW VERSION with improved video & sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JV14zzreUkM Vietnam War playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF7FC7A2D880623F7 Originally a public domain film from the Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_and_destroy Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Search and Destroy, Seek and Destroy, or even simply S&D, refers to a military strategy that became a large component of the Vietnam War. The idea was to insert ground forces into hostile territory, search out the enemy, destroy them, and withdraw immediately afterward. The strategy was the result of a new technology, the helicopter, which resulted in a new form of warfare, the fielding of air cavalry, and was thought to be ideally suited to counter-guerrilla jungle warfare. The complementary conventional strategy, which entailed attacking and conquering an enemy position, then fortifying and holding it indefinitely, was known as "clear and hold" or "clear and secure." In theory, since the traditional methods of "taking ground" could not be used in this war, a war of attrition would be used, eliminating the enemy by the use of "searching" for them, then "destroying" them, and the "body count" would be the measuring tool to determine the success of the strategy of "search and destroy." It is common practice among military forces to enforce strict rules on a search and destroy mission. ...The Zippo missions were mainly assigned to the second phase around 1966 and 1967, along with operations "Clear and Secure." Search and destroy missions entailed sending out platoons, companies, or larger detachments of US troops from a fortified position to locate and destroy Vietcong or NVA units in the countryside. These missions most commonly involved hiking out into the "boonies" and setting an ambush in the brush, near a suspected VC trail. The ambush typically involved the use of fixed Claymore Antipersonnel Mines, crossing lines of small arms fire, mortar support, and possibly additional artillery support called in via radio from a nearby firebase. In February 1967, some of the largest Zippo missions was operated in the Iron Triangle, located between Saigon and Routes 13 and 25. The area consisted of a mass centre of Viet Cong logistics and headquarters, with some of the most high-ranking NLF officials stationed there. The offensive began with Operation Junction City, where the American units assigned had destroyed hundreds of tons of rice, killed 720 guerrillas, and captured 213 prisoners. However, the Iron Triangle area's defenders was thought to be over 10,000. The offensive failed to destroy the NLF's headquarter nor capture any high-ranking officer, therefore having little effect toward Hanoi's plan... Search and destroy missions had many flaws. First, there was lack of distinction between "clearing" and search and destroy missions. Thus "clearing" missions, which were less aggressive, eventually morphed into a more violent and brutal form of tactic just as search and destroy missions were. With the lack of distinction between "clearing" and search and destroy missions, pacification was not pushed. Guenter Lewey, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, argued that the generals and war planners severely underestimated the enemy's abilities to match and exceed U.S. forces. Large numbers of Viet Cong troops would be killed or captured, but they were quickly replaced. Although enemy forces were initially pushed out of certain territories, as soon as the American forces left the areas, they simply returned with more reinforcements and weapons. The effectiveness of the missions are also doubtful. In one of the first Search and Destroy missions northwest of Dau Tieng, named Operation Attleboro, US report states that 155 U.S. soldiers were killed, while the North Vietnamese lost 1,106. In Operation Junction City, the report also states that 282 U.S. soldiers were killed while the Viet Cong lost 1,728 guerrillas. These figures, however, should be considered in light of the methods by which they were obtained. The estimates were almost exclusively gathered by indirect means: sensor readings, sightings of secondary explosions, reports of defectors or POWs, and inference or extrapolation.

Robin Schulz’s new single “OK” is a beautifully melodic deep house anthem paired with James Blunt’s distinctive vocals that releases today and is already creating quite a stir. The two superstars hit it off from the start and their chemistry on the track is undeniable: “I’ve had many great nights in Ibiza clubs listening to the very talented Robin Schulz DJ’ing, so this collaboration is very exciting for me,” James Blunt confirms. The feeling is mutual, as Robin Schulz adds: “I’m really looking forward to this release. What a great experience to work with a fantastic artist like James. This song is perfect for the summer!” Also releasing is the brand new companion video, directed by Liza Minou Morberg and starring James Blunt alongside German actress Lisa Tomaschewsky (“Deutschland 83”), who was very much impressed by the clip’s visual aesthetic: “I was really drawn in by its cinematic approach.” The video pays homage to Michel Gondry’s movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and details a young man trying to rid himself from the memories of a past relationship, before the chorus reminds us that in the end: “It’s gonna be okay!” What’s more, “OK (feat. James Blunt)” gives listeners a first taste of Robin Schulz’s forthcoming new album. On September 8th the superstar DJ and record-breaking producer will release his third studio album “Uncovered” with a total of 18 new tracks. “Uncovered” is the follow-up to his Platinum-certified breakthrough debut “Prayer” (2014) and his Gold-certified sophomore LP “Sugar” (2015). Less than three years in the making Robin Schulz ranks among the most sought after acts on the globe and currently holds DJ residencies at Ibiza venues Ushuaia and Pacha as well as the Wynn in Las Vegas. It all began with his record-setting remix “Prayer in C” (the internationally most successful hit of a German act to date). All in all he landed six Top 10 single releases in just under one and a half years. Late in 2016, the German ECHO award winner dropped his extraordinary David Guetta collab-single “Shed A Light (feat. Cheat Codes)”. The track was certified Gold in Germany and Platinum in several other countries. This spring he released his fifth studio album “The Afterlove”, to be followed by an extensive world tour later this year. His previous album “Moon Landing” (2013) was awarded Platinum in UK and included the stunning #1 single “Bonfire Heart”.

The second challenge was to keep this mission secret until the Indian Forces land in the Maldives because the Indian government didn't want the rebels to have any hint of India's action through the media. Soon, Indian Army will stop intrusions using this technology

03:47
Indian defence will soon use predictive analytics to stop intrusions. Over the last 6 months, a Delhi-based startup CRON Systems — an Internet of Things-based border security startup has been building technology that will help the Army in predicting intrusions and prevent them. CRON Systems, co-founded by Tushar Chhabra, Saurav Agarwala, and Tommy Katzenellenbogen— is working at the borders to build the product based on Army’s requirements. On a call from border area of high terrain with almost no cellular network zone Chhabra explained, “We have found three painpoints that they face daily - There is no communication channel and with lack of infrastructure they cannot install new-age products and most of the time it becomes too complicated for end user that they cannot even use it.” So, CRON has installed multiple sensors used in the polls which includes Sensor Fusion of Active Infra-Red, Passive Infra Red, Microwave and IR Cameras with Day and Night Capability, thermal cameras for accurate intrusion verification. These polls have a range of 100-200 meters which is capable of recognizing friends or foe movement. As soon as an intrusion happens or a movement is detected beyond the perimeter/border an alarm is raised, detected by these sensors and an alert is sent to an analytics platform, through an encrypted wireless communication system. Simultaneously, the nearest drone and rover are sent an alert for live surveillance & visual verification. However, when someone blocks this communication, the object is differentiated if its an animal or a human. Instantly, data is transmitted to each station where the jawan then has to press a button saying either he is in trouble or secure. “Collecting such data points, the platform is creating descriptive analytics, which probably in the next 5-6 years will help you predict the threat around the perimeter before an attack likely happens. For instance, if he is carrying any weapon, the light radar and thermal technology will detect it. He explains over the last two-three years, through their data points they found that during November, intrusions usually spike up. But also, before an intrusion happens lot of activities take place. “Such data points help in predicting these intrusions.” Chabbra adds, “We also realized just checking in line will not solve the problem but we need to look at the counterpart’s territory. All perimeters have different threats so a camp in Kashmir will have altogether a different set of data point from an Indo-Nepal border and even the level of threats are different. For example in the Indo-Nepal border, a person will always try to move alone so that he isn’t caught whereas in Kashmir territory while doing areas inspection, they will move in larger groups. Proximity to the perimeter is another crucial criteria. In heavy threat areas, proximity will be very less around 10-12 ft and it will be around months before the attack whereas otherwise, it will be 3 days before and around 100-200 metres away. The Unknown War - Survival at Stalingrad - 05/05

The Unknown War - Survival at Stalingrad 05/05 Documentary series about 1941-45 The Great Patriotic War. Similarly, on the southern flank of the Stalingrad sector the front south-west of Kotelnikovo was held only by the Romanian VII Corps, and beyond it a single German 16th Motorized Infantry Division. ...

China showcases ADVANCED new weapon systems at Airshow China

The People's Liberation Army (PLA; simplified Chinese: 中国人民解放军; traditional Chinese: 中國人民解放軍; pinyin: Zhōngguó Rénmín Jiěfàngjūn) is the military arm of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the de facto armed forces of the People's Republic of China, consisting of land, sea, strategic missile and air forces. Initially called the Chinese Workers and Peasants Red Army, the PLA was established on August 1, 1927 which is celebrated annually as "PLA Day". The People's Liberation Army's insignia consists of a roundel with a red star bearing the Chinese characters for "Eight One", referring to August 1 (Chinese: 八一), the date of the 1927 Nanchang Uprising. The PLA is the world's largest military force, with a strength of approximately 2,250,000 personnel (about 0.18% of the country's population). The PLA comprises five main service branches, consisting of the PLA Ground Force, PLA Navy (PLAN), PLA Air Force (PLAAF), Second Artillery Corps (strategic missile force), and the PLA Reserve Force. Military service is compulsory, in theory, for all men who attain the age of 18; women may register for duty in the medical, veterinary, and other technical services at ages as young as 14. However, a draft in China has never been enforced due to large numbers of volunteers from China's huge population. Demobilized servicemen are carried in a ready reserve, which is reinforced by a standby reserve of veterans and by the militia. China (Listeni/ˈtʃaɪnə/; Chinese: 中国; pinyin: Zhōngguó), officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state located in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a single-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing.[14] It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Chongqing), and two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau).[15] The PRC also claims Taiwan -- which is controlled by the Republic of China (ROC), a separate political entity -- as its 23rd province, a claim controversial due to the complex political status of Taiwan and the unresolved Chinese Civil War.[16] The United States Armed Forces[N 1] are the military forces of the United States of America. They consist of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard.[6] The U.S. has a strong tradition of civilian control of the military. The President of the United States is the military's overall head, and helps form military policy with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), a federal executive department, acting as the principal organ by which military policy is carried out. The DoD is headed by the Secretary of Defense, who is a civilian and Cabinet member. The Defense Secretary is second in the military's chain of command, just below the President, and serves as the principal assistant to the President in all DoD-related matters.[7] To coordinate military action with diplomacy, the President has an advisory National Security Council headed by a National Security Advisor. Both the President and Secretary of Defense are advised by a seven-member Joint Chiefs of Staff, which includes the head of each of the Defense Department's service branches as well as the chief of the National Guard Bureau. Leadership is provided by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.[8] The Commandant of the Coast Guard is not a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The United States of America (USA or U.S.A.), commonly referred to as the United States (US or U.S.) or America, is a federal republic[10][11] consisting of 50 states and a federal district. The 48 contiguous states and the federal district of Washington, D.C. are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is the northwestern part of North America, west of Canada and east of Russia which is across the Bering Strait in Asia, and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-North Pacific. The country also has five populated and nine unpopulated territories in the Pacific and the Caribbean. At 3.79 million square miles (9.83 million km2) in total and with around 315 million people, the United States is the third largest country by land area and population. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries.[12] The geography and climate of the U.S. is also extremely diverse, with deserts, plains, forests, and mountains that are home to a wide variety of wildlife. War is an organised and often prolonged armed conflict that is carried out by states or non-state actors. It is characterised by extreme violence, social disruption, and economic destruction.[1][2]

Desertions undermine Afghan army - 02 Dec 09

02:38
Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe An exclusive Al Jazeera investigation has found that the number of existing security forces in Afghanistan has been greatly exaggerated with widespread desertions by members of the army and police. Senior officials in the Obama administration say US troops will start to return home from July of 2011. That is when Afghan forces are supposed to be ready to take over. But an investigation by Al Jazeera's James Bays shows that may not be feasible. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives.
