Individuals suffering from medical conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis or osteoporosis also benefit from hand surgery techniques and procedures that help reduce pain and restore range of motion. Those suffering from birth defects or severe infections that cause pain or deformity also benefit from such procedures. Many different types of hand surgery are available depending on need. Some of the most common types of hand surgery procedures include but are not limited to. Tendon or nerve repair. Skin grafts. Closed Reduction and Fixation. Joint replacement. It is difficult to state the exact amount of money a person might have to spend on hand surgery because techniques and procedures vary. However, hand surgical procedures in the United States may cost anywhere from $500 to $20,000 for some procedures, and quite a bit more for those involving grafting. Medical travelers to Costa Rica may enjoy between a 50-60% decrease in costs for hand surgeries, while travelers to India and Thailand may enjoy as much as 50% savings. Medical providers in Germany may be able to offer up to 75% savings on common hand surgical procedures such as Carpal Tunnel surgeries. Hand Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo
Hand arthritis is pretty common, and it can be very debilitating. Since the joints in the hand are small, you don’t have to do much to relieve the pain, you just have to keep them moving. These stretches and exercises should help your hand arthritis feel better. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: http://www.askdoctorjo.com/hand-arthritis You can set your arm on a table or flat surface to relax it, or if you don’t have anything available, you can prop your elbow up on your knee or thigh. Start off with a fist and warm up your wrist. With your palm side facing down, move your fist up and down at the wrist for flexion and extension. Now move it side to side in a radial and ulnar deviation movement. Ten in each direction should be fine since this is just to warm up the muscles. Next, you will keep your fingers straight, and take your thumb and touch each finger in the middle of your hand, and then spread them all back apart. You can do three times back and forth. Now bend your fingers at the joint closest to your wrist, still keeping the fingers as straight as you can. Bend down and back up gliding the tendons up and down. Now move to the next joint down the fingers. This time open your fingers, and then curl the top part of your fingers down for the stretch. Finally, go to the last joint farthest down the finger. You might have to hold onto the near part of your finger so just the last joint moves. Just start off with ten of each of these with a continuous movement. For the last stretch, start with all your fingers close together, and then spread them out as far as you can, just like you are fanning them out. You don’t have to do a lot of these exercises since these are small joints. 2-3 minutes, 2-3 times a day should be plenty. Live Surgery: Ganglion Cyst: Distal Interphalangeal Joint (Finger)
www.hand411.com www.MPSurgery.com Digital mucous cysts (DMCs) are benign ganglion cysts of the digits, typically located at the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints or in the proximal nail fold. They usually occur on the hands, although they have also been noted on the toes. The etiology of these cysts is uncertain but may involve mucoid degeneration. Often, these cysts are asymptomatic and do not require treatment. When treatment is indicated, medical therapies and surgical interventions of varying magnitudes may be attempted. Recurrence is common. Historically, little attention has been directed at studying these cysts despite their frequency. In the literature, they have been referred to as cystomata, myxomatous cutaneous cysts, myxomatous degenerative cysts, periarticular fibromas, synovial lesions of the skin, periungual ganglions, mucous cysts, myxoid cysts, synovial cysts, dorsal cysts, nail cysts, cystic nodules, digital mucoid cysts, digital myxoid cysts, and digital mucinous pseudocysts. Hippocrates first appreciated ganglion cysts, describing a knot of tissue full of fluid. In 1746, Eller concluded that ganglia formed from the herniation of the synovial lining of a joint. In 1882, Hyde first described the digital mucous cyst. In 1893, Ledderhose suggested that ganglia arose spontaneously in the subcutaneous tissue. In 1895, Ritschel proposed the earliest formulation of the theory that mucoid degeneration may be responsible for digital mucous cysts; Carp and Stout popularized the theory in 1928. Then, in 1947, Anderson reported that cysts caused the nail deformities. The mechanism of formation of digital mucous cysts is unknown. Currently, it is believed that the cysts arise from mucoid degeneration of connective tissue and that this process, in most cases, involves communication with the adjacent DIP joint and possible coexistence of osteoarthritis. Clinical and radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis is common at the site of the cysts,[1] and the frequent presence of osteophytes and spurring of the DIP joint were recognized in the 1970s. Active connection to the joint space may or may not exist, as the mucoblasts associated with the cyst appear capable of sustaining the process. Ganglia are the most common tumor or cyst of the hand. They account for approximately 70% of all such tumors or cysts, with digital mucous cysts comprising 10-15% of the total. Women are affected more often than men (female-to-male ratio of 2-2.5:1). Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease or osteoarthrosis, is the most common form of arthritis. ELBOW PAIN CAUSES AND TREATMENT - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim
Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video about Elbow pain, describing the conditions associated with the area of the elbow. Tennis elbow ( lateral epicondylitis) It is an inflammation, soreness or pain on the outside (lateral) area near the elbow. Injury is usually seen in patients who perform manual labor or sports that require twisting and extension of the wrist against resistance. There is pain with resistant wrist extension. All these symptoms occur because of degeneration, irritation, tears and pain of the extensor tendons. Treatment includes ice, elbow pads, decreased activity, physical therapy, eccentric exercise, steroid injections or surgery as a last resort. Radial tunnel syndrome The pain of radial tunnel syndrome is very similar to the symptoms of tennis elbow. Pain is usually distal to the lateral epicondyle and radiates down the forearm. If the symptoms of tennis elbow are not going away with treatment, rule out the possibility of radial tunnel syndrome. Treatment: ice, elbow pad, decreased activity, physical therapy, eccentric exercise, injections (steroids or PRP), surgery( as a last resort). Anterior elbow pain ( biceps tendon rupture) The biceps muscle aids in flexion and supination of the forearm. Symptoms of biceps tendon rupture include pain, bruising, and swelling located infront of the elbow. It occurs in patients who perform manual labor, body builders, etc. rupture may retract the muscle casuing popeye sign. Rupture affects 40% of supination of the forearm and the tendon needs to be reattached to the tuberosity of the radius. Elbow arthritis Elbow injuries can lead to loss of cartilage and joint degeneration due to extra wear and tear on the surfaces of the joint. Symptoms include global pain, stiffness and loss of motion. This condition is called osteoarthritis, denerative arthritis or posttraumatic arthritis.Treatment includes anti-inflammatory medications, injections, therapy and rarely surgery. Golfer’s elbow ( medial epicondylitis) The flexor muscles of the forearm are responsible for flexion of the wrist. Golfer’s elbow is an inflammation, soreness or pain on the inside area near the elbow. This pain is due to repetitive overuse or overload activities and is aggravated by movement of the wrist. Treatment includes ice, decreased activity, physical therapy, eccentric exercise, steroid injections or surgery as a last resort. Cubital tunnel syndrome It is a condition due to compression of the ulnar nerve at the area of the medial ( inside) elbow resulting in pain, swelling and weakness of the hand. This problem occurs due to compression where the ulnar nerve passes around the elbow through the cubital tunnel. Treatment conservative then surgery if conservative treatment fails. Medial collateral ligament injury Injury typically occurs in throwing sports such as baseball as seen in pitching ( tommy john injury ). It can lead to chronic pain, valgus instability and can be potentially disabling. Treatment includes: stop throwing, physical therapy, evaluation with x rays and MRI. Injury may need reconstruction which is successful but takes a long time to restore function of the elbow. Posterior impingement syndrome Valgus and extension overload can result in injury of the posterior part of the elbow. Athletes present with posterior elbow pain that worsens when the elbow is extended with loss of velocity and control. Athletes may experience catching, locking, clicking and stiffness. With repeated forced extension of the elbow, the top of the olecranon is jammed into the fossa at the back of the elbow causing inflammation, cartilage injury, loose fragments and bony spurs. Treatment is usually conservative and rarely needs surgery. Olecranon bursitis It is inflammation of a small sac of fluid located on the tip of the elbow.this bursa allows the elbow to bend and straighten freely underneath the skin but can become irritated with repetitive movement. Treatment is usually conservative and rarely needs surgery. this video is created by university of Toledo orthopedic surgeon Please go to the following link and support the artist Johnny Widmer in his art contest - Sign to Facebook and click LIKE https://www.facebook.com/marlinmag/photos/a.10153261748858040.1073741838.134227843039/10153261754338040/?type=3&theater Thank you! https://www.facebook.com/JohnnyWidmerArt?fref=ts http://www.johnnywidmer.com/
