Lab8 vitamin C and iodine titration
Overview of Iodine-vitamin C titration using 1 wt % starch as an indicator. 1% Starch Solution Recipe: Bring 1 L water to a boil. Prepare a 1% starch solution by first making a smooth paste with 10 g of soluble (potato or corn) starch and about 50 to 100 mL of deionized water. Pour the starch paste into 1 L of boiling water while stirring. Stir until dissolved. Allow the solution to cool to room temperature before use. Starch solutions have a poor shelf life and will form mold if kept too long. Fresh solutions work best. Use within one or two months. After Lab: Store in Refrigerator. Good starch solution will stay suspended for long periods of time. If solid settles out, it may not work that well.

Determination of Vitamin C by Redox Titration (Iodometric Titration of Ascorbic Acid) Lab
The full procedure of the redox titration of vitamin C is outlined in four parts. a) Transferring 25.00 mL of ascorbic acid. b) Filling a buret with iodine. c) Standardizing an iodine solution. d) Titrating a sample of juice. Ascorbic acid (should be prepared fresh each semester) 3 L of ~0.005 M ascorbic acid solution. To prepare 1 L of this solution, weigh about 0.88 g of ascorbic acid (MW = 176.12 g/mol) in a 100 mL beaker. Measure carefully 1 L of DI water into a 1 L graduated cylinder. Use a powder funnel to transfer the bulk of the ascorbic acid to a 1 L plastic screw top bottle. Rinse in the remaining solid in the beaker using small portions of water from the graduated cylinder, washing the solid off the powder funnel into the bottle during the process. Add about half of the remaining water to the bottle, tightly screw the cap on the bottle and shake it well to dissolve the bulk of the solid. Add the remaining water to the bottle. Use the following formula to calculate the molarity of the ascorbic acid AA solution: Exact mass AA used x (1 mol AA/176.12 g AA) x (1 / 1 L) Write this value (in M) clearly on the bottle, to two significant figures. Iodine Solution (should be prepared fresh each semester) OR buy it pre-made, ~0.02 M solution (Fisher SI92-1) diluted to ~0.005 M. 3 L of ~0.005 M iodine solution. Weigh 4.00 g of potassium iodide in a 100 mL beaker. Measure carefully 1 L of DI water into a 1 L graduated cylinder. Use a powder funnel to transfer the bulk of the potassium iodide solid to a 1 L glass amber screw top bottle. Use about 100 mL of the water from the graduated cylinder to help transfer the residue in the beaker into the bottle. Tightly cap the bottle and shake it well to dissolve the solid. Weigh about 1.27 g of iodine solid (MW = 253.81 g/mol) in a 100 mL beaker. Pre-crush the iodine in a mortar and pestle to help it dissolve. Transfer the iodine to the bottle using a powder funnel. Rinse in the remaining solid in the beaker using small portions of water from the graduated cylinder, washing the solid off the powder funnel during the process. Add about half of the remaining water to the bottle, tightly screw the cap on the bottle and shake it well to dissolve the bulk of the solid. Add the remaining water to the bottle. After all of the solid has dissolved, add 2 drops of concentrated hydrochloric acid. Starch Indicator Solution (should be prepared fresh each semester) 100 mL of starch indicator solution Add about 1 gram of starch (either corn or potato) into 10 mL of distilled water, shake well, and pour into 100 mL of boiling, distilled water. Stir thoroughly and boil for a 1 minute. Leave to cool. If the precipitate forms, decant the supernatant (carefully pour off the liquid without the solid) and use as the indicator solution. Acetic Acid Solution 100 mL of 0.2 M acetic acid solution To prepare 1 L of this solution, measure 11 mL of glacial acetic acid (density = 1.049 g/mL; MW = 60.05 g/mol) in a 25 mL graduated cylinder. Measure 990. mL of DI water into a 1 L graduated cylinder. Add the acetic acid to a 1 L screw top plastic bottle. Rinse the 25 mL graduated cylinder with small portions of water from the 1 L graduated cylinder into the bottle. Add about half of the remaining water to the bottle, tightly screw the cap on the bottle and shake it well. Add the remaining water to the bottle. Commercial Apple Juice A commercial sample of apple juice (1 L) will need to be purchased each semester. As long as it is refrigerated, it will keep for several weeks. Tropicana 100% Apple Juice is recommended.

Potatoes Nutrition Facts: Carbs, Lose Weight, Health Benefits
Potatoes: Why Are They So Awesome? Reason 1: Vitamins & Minerals Potatoes might seem a dull and lifeless root, that doesn’t contain much of anything but my friend you would be mistaken. Potatoes are packed full of many beneficial vitamins and minerals that are necessary for human life. Potatoes are full of many B vitamins, vitamin C, Iron, Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, Sulphur, Potassium, and Sulphur. Making it a powerhouse for human health, and has even been shown to outrank onions, carrots in terms of antioxidant activity. Potatoes have even been shown in studies to be able to reduce inflammation, and help with cardiovascular health, most likely because of the high amounts antioxidants they contain. There is one catch however when it comes to obtaining the great nutrients that these tubers contain, and that is that most of the beneficial vitamins and minerals are found in the skin. Yes I know we have all had that baked potato that we tried to eat with the skin and got nothing but a mouthful of what tasted like pure delicious dirt. The best thing that you can do for that is number one clean your potato before you cook it, next you should try different kinds of potatoes (I have found that russet potatoes are the ones that taste like dirt most often), and finally try cooking them differently occasionally you will see that the skin can be the best part! Reason 2: Starch Starch isn’t just something that you use to get the wrinkles out of your jeans when you iron them. Starch is a carbohydrate that is found in many plants, and is broken down into the main fuel source that our bodies use called glucose. Potatoes are high in a specific kind of starch called resistant starch. The reason it is called resistant starch is because it isn’t broken down in the gut, but makes its way to the microbiota and is a good form of prebiotic to feed the bacteria of your microbiome. Resistant starch has been shown to help with helping improve insulin sensitivity, digestion issues, risk of colon cancer, help with absorption of minerals, and increases butyrate in the microbiome. Potatoes regularly have a good amount of resistant starch in them, but an easy way to allow them to gain even more is by cooking them and letting them cool down. No you don’t have to eat cold potatoes, because even when you heat them back up the resistant starch remains and you can still get the beneficial effects. Reason 3: Satiety Potatoes above other carbohydrates are extremely satisfying when it comes to overall satiety. What I mean by this is that you stay full for longer and have less hunger after consuming potatoes rather than other carbohydrate sources. I have found this to be true on a personal level. I have tried to use the classic chicken and rice bodybuilding diet, and found myself starving after about an hour after eating even though my calories were in point. Once I got away from that and started to eat potatoes with my main meal however this all changed. Once I get finished with my main meal of the day that contains a hefty portion of potatoes I don’t even think about food for hours on end because I am completely satisfied, but don’t just take my word for it, let’s look at what the research says. In one study that looked at the satiety index of 38 different foods boiled potatoes actually scored the highest. It’s also been shown that consuming potatoes with a meal resulted in less overall energy (caloric) intake than a meal with either rice or pasta. So if you are trying to stay satisfied on a low calorie diet, or are trying to maintain your weight but still find yourself being hungry I highly recommend putting some good organic potatoes into your diet. What They Do Not Have Makes Them Awesome Too! In a lot of foods, such as nuts and many leafy greens, there are things called antinutrients. Antinutrients are things in certain foods that have an adverse effect on the absorption of key micronutrients in the body, or bioenergetic system of the body. Some examples of antinutrients are things like phytic acid which has been shown to absorb minerals from the body leading to micronutrient deficiencies, phytoestrogens which have been shown to lead to excess estrogen in the human body, and goitrogens which have very detrimental effects on the health of the thyroid gland. Potatoes on the other hand contain little to no phytic acid whatsoever, making all of the nutrients in them completely available for the body to be able to use, with no adverse effects on the hormonal balance, or micronutrient content of the body. They do not naturally contain any phytoestrogens, although if they have been left in the heat in plastic or are ladened in pesticides this could easily change. They also do not contain any goitrogens, allowing them to contribute to optimal thyroid health and skyrocketing your metabolism, as long as you don’t fry them up in PUFAs, which ruins almost all benefits they have to offer.

Here Is Why You Should Rinse Your Hair With Potato Juice
Potato juice is very beneficial for your hair. In this video, we will explore some of the ways potato juice can solve your hair problems. Potatoes contains many nutrients that can be incredibly beneficial to your hair. Using this vegetable in your hair care routine is not totally new, but the best way to do it is by using potato water. Here's what you need to do: Ingredients 1 potato; 50 ml of water. Wash the potato well and chop it into small pieces. Mix the chopped up potatoes with the water and beat them in the blender for a few minutes. After they have been puréed, use a clean cloth to strain them. Squeeze the potatoes hard with the cloth in order to extract as much liquid as possible. The ideal is to prepare the mixture right before you preform the treatment so you make sure that you're not losing any of it beneficial qualities. The application process is very easy. Gently massage your scalp with the potato juice for five to ten minutes. Then apply it all over your hair and let it sit for at least 30 minutes but no more then 2 hours. Wash and condition your hair as usual. You can also mix the potato juice with 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel and apply it to your hair if you want to increase the growth rate even more. Based on these numbers, I would guess that lemon juice would have a higher EC than potato juice.

It feels so good on the teeth to bite into it, and my kids go crazy for them .. so I spent a bit of time researching how they're made commercially. My biggest motivation for doing this was to see if we could make our own at home, and I'm actually still trying to figure out how to make gelatin and corn syrup from scratch, so if I can figure out how to do that, maybe I'll show how to do it in another project video. Only a small handful of you have ever seen the LEGO Gummy video I made in 2010, and that's because it was nearly 5 years ago, before I really got serious about making videos. I took it off my channel in 2012 because I had full intentions of making a better version, so here it is .. 3 years later! :) Now I wanted to make candies that made people look twice, and LEGO bricks instantly came to mind because what's more awesome than LEGO and gummy put together? But I wasn't sure where could you get a mold for making LEGO bricks. Surfing around the internet, I stumbled across an awesome Instructable by SFHandyman: http://bit.ly/IBSFHandyman To my amazement, not only had he shown how to make a mold for making LEGO candy, he also made LEGO gummies as well! I played around with loads of variations in recipes to see what texture and tastes I liked the best. And I've kept experimenting off and on for the last 4 years, using my kids and wife for feedback. They gobble them up no matter what variations I use, but I've finally settled on 1/2 cup of very cold water, 1/4 cup of corn syrup, 2 packets of unflavored gelatin, and 1 pack of Jell-O. I've found that the corn syrup seems to help smooth out the texture and the taste. If you try making this recipe, it's very important to start the gelatin in cold water. Stir it up, then let it sit for 5 minutes before you turn on the heat. Otherwise, you'll get gobby clumps of undissolved gelatin in your syrup that doesn't look very appetizing. I originally made my silicone mold with a 2 part mix from a special effects supply company. I used real LEGO bricks set on a LEGO base, and built a makeshift retaining wall with bricks and play-dough. I don't plan to make a tutorial on how to make the mold, but I want to do a video on how to make a silicone mold in general. It's amazing to see how much detail the silicone can transfer to the final gummy products. If you look closely at my candies you can even see the little “LEGO” text on top of the gummy LEGO studs. To make sour gummies, we often add citric acid. They are incredible! But if you don't have citric acid, try taking SFHandyman's suggestion and add vitamin C. The citric and ascorbic acids in the vitamins sour them the same way, which actually makes them taste just as great, and enriches them with vitamin C as well.
