Earlier this week, George Lopez was slated to emcee the Carousel Ball in Denver, a gala for juvenile diabetes, where tables go for anywhere from $5,000 to $100,000 to benefit the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. When the comedian tried to politicize the charity event, which was chock-full of successful businesspeople who support President Donald Trump, the fed-up “white” audience decided to make him pay for his irreverence in the perfect way.
Greg Maffei, a supporter of President Donald Trump and the CEO of Liberty Media, generously donated $250,000 to the Carousel Ball this year, and he asked that Lopez cool it with the anti-Trump jokes. When the comedian didn’t listen, the audience effectively gave him no choice, booing him off stage.
An attendee at the Carousel Ball commented on a YouTube video taken from the event, explaining that “George was asked nicely to stop making Trump jokes by a man in front row [Maffei] who just donated $250K. George doesn’t, continues. Gets booed.”
According to Page Six, Lopez responded to Maffei, “Thank you for changing my opinion on old white men, but it doesn’t change the way I feel about orange men.”
Trying to recover and sensing the audience turn, Lopez decided to “apologize” for his anti-Trump jokes by insulting the audience with a racist jab. “Listen, it’s about the kids,” he said. “I apologize for bringing politics to an event. This is America — it still is. So, I apologize to your white privilege.” That’s when the audience, having had enough of the comedian’s antics, booed him off stage.
With attendees shaking their heads and audibly expressing their disgust with Lopez’s decorum, he announced a video segment, but he did not return to the stage. A local newscaster toke over the hosting duties instead. TV host Chris Parente posted on Twitter, “big controversy: host of HUGE charity #CarouselBall, @georgelopez, makes political comments about Trump, drops f-bomb and is escorted out.”
A source close to the comedian insisted that Lopez’s segment was “only supposed to be four minutes,” but it appears this was just an excuse to help him save face because Lopez was listed as the evening’s emcee. Despite his efforts to derail the gala benefitting children with a very serious health condition, though, the Carousel Ball was a success, raising $1.65 million.
According to BizPacReview, this is not the first time Lopez has attacked his own audience after one of his politically-charged jokes fell flat. Back in February, he called a woman a “b*tch” and kicked her out of his show because she didn’t like the comedy routine he was presenting.
“Sit your f*ckin’ ass down!” Lopez yelled at the female in his audience. “Sit your f*ckin’ ass down! I’m talking, b*tch. You paid to see a show. So, sit your f*cking ass down,” he berated her, before kicking her out of the event altogether, saying, “I tell you what, I’ll make the choice for you. Get the f*ck out of here!”
In November 2016, Lopez was among the liberal celebrities who promised to leave the United States if Donald Trump was elected president. Nearly one year later, we’re all still waiting for the washed-up comedian to make good on his word. Get moving, Geroge.
