10 Lessons You Wish They'd Taught In School

Subscribe for a new video ►► http://goo.gl/XFN9BN 10. Barry White Jr., an English teacher at an elementary school in North Carolina, is one cool dude. He shakes hands with many students, but has very different routines in doing so for each student. The routines range from those understated handshakes to elaborate dances, shuffles and salutes. Now how cool is that? Gimme five, fist-bump high, do the twist and let’s end it on a high high-five that misses. See… I can be cool too…. Source: https://goo.gl/YBSw2v 9. In Phoenix, Oregon, the Armadillo Technical Institute, a charter school, has no janitors. Do you know why? It doesn’t need any… because all the students there in grades 6 through 12 take turns cleaning up their school and keeping it very presentable. Hey, I don’t wanna suggest putting any of our hard-working school janitors out of work, but this seems to me a great thing to put our young ones to work and keep them busy and proud of the work they do. Maybe our school janitors can take some students under their wings and show ‘em how it’s done. Source: https://goo.gl/O4hPbe 8. The headteacher of an elementary school is cracking down on parents who send their kids to school with terrible packed lunches. Examples included a cold Happy Meal bought the previous evening and one that had only two packets of crisps. Jon Carthy insisted parents pack better lunches for their kids, with fruits and vegetables and fresh meat or fish. Parents responded positively. Source: https://goo.gl/SxruFr 7. One school in Essex, England, is having parents return to the classroom for some tutoring on math. This is being done because the parents can’t help their kids with solving problems. It’s actually a voluntary program, but, surprisingly, more than 50 parents have shown up to take part in it. Source: https://goo.gl/mNbP9W 6. In Germany, it’s becoming very popular for children ages 3 to 6 to enjoy an outdoors kindergarten. This forest-type of kindergarten allows kids to play, explore and learn in a natural, outside environment. Studies show that a child’s development is greatly enhanced through this. And although the education union there is looking down on the process, Peter Hutton, the principal of Templestowe College, say it’s a fantastic process and about 70 percent of the staff there are employed through this unusual hiring method. So… what do you teachers out there think of that? Source: https://goo.gl/qI96Pf

Carols from Kings College

01:14:37
King's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. Formally The King's College of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas in Cambridge, the college lies beside the River Cam and faces out onto King's Parade in the centre of the city. King's was founded in 1441 by Henry VI, soon after he had founded its sister college in Eton. However, the King's plans for the college were disrupted by the Wars of the Roses and resultant scarcity of funds, and his eventual deposition. Little progress was made on the project until in 1508 Henry VII began to take an interest in the college, most likely as a political move to legitimise his new position. The building of the college's chapel, begun in 1446, was finally finished in 1544 during the reign of Henry VIII. King's College Chapel is regarded as one of the greatest examples of late Gothic English architecture. It has the world's largest fan-vault, and the chapel's stained-glass windows and wooden chancel screen are considered some of the finest from their era. The building is seen as emblematic of Cambridge.[3] The chapel's choir, composed of male students at King's and choristers from the nearby King's College School, is one of the most accomplished and renowned in the world. Every year on Christmas Eve the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols (a service devised specifically for King's by college dean Eric Milner-White) is broadcast from the chapel to millions of listeners worldwide.[4][5] Music, Art, Film, Authors, History, Transportation and the Sciences http://www.sherwayacademy.ca

"Sustaining Happiness Through Mindful Living" | Barry Margerum | TEDxSantaClaraUniversity

21:57
Your brain is a powerful tool, but is wired for you to survive and at times subconsciously operates at cross purposes with what you might consider to be the best behavior. This presents a problem in the world where digital devices have led to increasingly high levels of stress in our lives. Being “Mindful” insures that you properly reflect on the situation before acting and behave in a way that would be most beneficial. Being present, in an open and accepting way, with the right mindset, to what you are experiencing, prepares you for this optimal behavior. Barry Margerum has more than twenty-five years of C-level management, strategy, and marketing experience in the electronics and communications industries and is a recognized pioneer in bringing mindfulness programs into the corporate workplace. Barry brought Google’s Search Inside Yourself program to Plantronics Inc. in 2012, where he was serving as the Chief Strategy Officer. He subsequently became certified to teach the SIY curriculum and has taught mindfulness classes to executives and knowledge workers around the world. He consults with F1000 to develop compassionate leaders and corporate-wide mindfulness work practices to achieve higher levels of engagement, increased well-being and optimal performance. Margerum holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Princeton University and a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University. In this highly engaging talk, leadership expert Lars Sudmann will dive into the past, present and future of excellent leadership. Your body language may shape who you are | Amy Cuddy

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy argues that "power posing" -- standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don't feel confident -- can boost feelings of confidence, and might have an impact on our chances for success. (Note: Some of the findings presented in this talk have been referenced in an ongoing debate among social scientists about robustness and reproducibility. Bill Gates: Teachers need real feedback

10:22
Until recently, many teachers only got one word of feedback a year: "satisfactory." And with no feedback, no coaching, there's just no way to improve. Bill Gates suggests that even great teachers can get better with smart feedback -- and lays out a program from his foundation to bring it to every classroom. Learning styles & the importance of critical self-reflection | Tesia Marshik | TEDxUWLaCrosse

18:15
The belief in learning styles is so widespread, it is considered to be common sense. Few people ever challenge this belief, which has been deeply ingrained in our educational system. Teachers are routinely told that in order to be effective educators, they must identify & cater to individual students' learning styles; it is estimated that around 90% of students believe that they have a specific learning style but research suggests that learning styles don't actually exist! This presentation focuses on debunking this myth via research findings, explaining how/why the belief in learning styles is problematic, and examining the reasons why the belief persists despite the lack of evidence. Dr. Tesia Marshik is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Her research interests in educational psychology include student motivation, self-regulation, and teacher-student relationships. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Sociological Imagination

05:59
This video is an introduction of C. Wright Mills concept of the sociological imagination. Understanding and being able to exercise the sociological imagination helps us understand the relationship between the individual and society. Mills focuses on the distinction of personal troubles and public issues. For example, exercising is not just a personal behavior but is vastly influenced by society. The example of obesity in the United States is used to help explain this concept. Further examination of the sociological imagination can be found on page 6 in the text Sociology 2e by OpenStax College.

How language shapes the way we think | Lera Boroditsky

14:13
There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world -- and they all have different sounds, vocabularies and structures. But do they shape the way we think? Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares examples of language -- from an Aboriginal community in Australia that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian -- that suggest the answer is a resounding yes. "The beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is," Boroditsky says. "Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000."
