"Sustaining Happiness Through Mindful Living" | Barry Margerum | TEDxSantaClaraUniversity

21:57
Your brain is a powerful tool, but is wired for you to survive and at times subconsciously operates at cross purposes with what you might consider to be the best behavior. This presents a problem in the world where digital devices have led to increasingly high levels of stress in our lives. Being “Mindful” insures that you properly reflect on the situation before acting and behave in a way that would be most beneficial. Being present, in an open and accepting way, with the right mindset, to what you are experiencing, prepares you for this optimal behavior. Barry Margerum has more than twenty-five years of C-level management, strategy, and marketing experience in the electronics and communications industries and is a recognized pioneer in bringing mindfulness programs into the corporate workplace. Barry brought Google’s Search Inside Yourself program to Plantronics Inc. in 2012, where he was serving as the Chief Strategy Officer. He subsequently became certified to teach the SIY curriculum and has taught mindfulness classes to executives and knowledge workers around the world. He consults with F1000 to develop compassionate leaders and corporate-wide mindfulness work practices to achieve higher levels of engagement, increased well-being and optimal performance. Margerum holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Princeton University and a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University. We are looking for stocks that we expect will move in a predictable direction. We want to take a position with a predefined stop level and profit target. Sounds easy right? In a lot of ways it is. But there are literally thousands of different strategies for trading the market. Every trader has a unique approach to trading. Our goal is to teach you our strategies. I have developed a series of profitable trading strategies for beginners. Our Trading Courses focus on the most fundamental aspects of a successful trade. // Chart Patterns After you understand risk management and proper stock selection, we teach you how to find stock patterns on charts. These patterns are how we base our risk and reward. We look for chart patterns that have well defined areas of support and resistance. We will use previous support levels as our stop price, or our risk, and we look at previous resistance areas as our initial profit target, or our reward. If the profit vs loss ratio is 2:1 we will take the trade. I teach both day trading strategies and swing trading strategies. For day trading we focus primarily on 5min charts while swing traders focus more on daily charts. The patterns in general are the same. I teach traders how to find patterns in real-time including Bull Flags, Bear Flags, Flat Tops, Flat Bottoms, and Rubber Band Reversal Setups. // Trading Strategies Learning risk management, proper stock selection, and chart patterns is important, but those alone don’t create a trading strategy. A trading strategy requires details on the time of day you take these trades, what type of stocks you like to trade, what percentage to success you expect. All our students are required to papertrade and prove to me that they can trade on a percentage of success that is high enough to justify real trading. If you can’t make money in a demo account, you have no business trading a real account. We have saved students hundreds of thousands of dollars by encouraging paper trading while they are learning. The market will be here for a long time to come. The important thing for you right now is to build up the skills to trade the market successfully. You will learn that once you possess the skills to consistently make $20.00/day all it takes to make $200 is larger share size. Then all it takes to make $2000 is again, larger share size. The hardest part is being consistently green just $20/day. So that is our initial target for all of our students. Profitable trading 4/5 days per week for at least 3 months. For Students: http://l.prageru.com/29SgPaX JOIN our Educators Network! http://l.prageru.com/2c8vsff Script: Once upon a time, every student of history – and that meant pretty much everyone with a high school education – knew this: The Democratic Party was the party of slavery and Jim Crow, and the Republican Party was the party of emancipation and racial integration. Democrats were the Confederacy and Republicans were the Union. Jim Crow Democrats were dominant in the South and socially tolerant Republicans were dominant in the North. But then, in the 1960s and 70s, everything supposedly flipped: suddenly the Republicans became the racists and the Democrats became the champions of civil rights. Fabricated by left-leaning academic elites and journalists, the story went like this: Republicans couldn't win a national election by appealing to the better nature of the country; they could only win by appealing to the worst. Attributed to Richard Nixon, the media's all-purpose bad guy, this came to be known as "The Southern Strategy." It was very simple. Win elections by winning the South. And to win the South, appeal to racists. So, the Republicans, the party of Lincoln, were to now be labeled the party of rednecks. But this story of the two parties switching identities is a myth. In fact, it's three myths wrapped into one false narrative. Let's take a brief look at each myth in turn. Myth Number One: In order to be competitive in the South, Republicans started to pander to white racists in the 1960s. Fact: Republicans actually became competitive in the South as early as 1928, when Republican Herbert Hoover won over 47 percent of the South's popular vote against Democrat Al Smith. In 1952, Republican President Dwight Eisenhower won the southern states of Tennessee, Florida and Virginia. And in 1956, he picked up Louisiana, Kentucky and West Virginia, too. And that was after he supported the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education that desegregated public schools; and after he sent the 101st Airborne to Little Rock Central High School to enforce integration. Myth Number Two: Southern Democrats, angry with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, switched parties. Fact: Of the 21 Democratic senators who opposed the Civil Rights Act, just one became a Republican. The other 20 continued to be elected as Democrats, or were replaced by other Democrats. On average, those 20 seats didn't go Republican for another two-and-a-half decades. Myth Number Three: Since the implementation of the Southern Strategy, the Republicans have dominated the South. Fact: Richard Nixon, the man who is often credited with creating the Southern Strategy, lost the Deep South in 1968. In contrast, Democrat Jimmy Carter nearly swept the region in 1976 - 12 years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. And in 1992, over 28 years later, Democrat Bill Clinton won Georgia, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia. The truth is, Republicans didn't hold a majority of southern congressional seats until 1994, 30 years after the Civil Rights Act. Why no one cares about Syria | Barry Andrews | TEDxUCD

18:40
Barry Andrews is CEO of GOAL, an international humanitarian agency, whose TEDxUCD 2014 talk is entitled 'Why No One Cares About Syria' Every generation has its humanitarian catastrophe and ours, according to Barry, is Syria. In this TEDxUCD talk Barry asks the question as to why we have an inability to separate the political from the humanitarian in order to address the morally indefensible death of people in conflict zones. Giving examples of Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur, Barry in his TEDxUCD talk notes that the international community may not recognise the catastrophe at the time it is happening. In Syria 160,000 people have been killed, 3 million refugees have left the country and 6 million people are internally displaced. In this TEDxUCD talk Barry asks with evidence like this, why is this humanitarian catastrophe not being addressed? Barry Andrews has been the CEO of GOAL since January 2013. A former Minister with the Irish Government, Barry was educated at Blackrock College, Dublin and at University College Dublin (UCD), where he received a Master's Degree in Modern History. He began his career as a history teacher, and spent seven years teaching in secondary schools in Dublin. He was called to the Bar in 1997, and practiced as a barrister for five years. Barry became a public representative in June 1999 when he was elected to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for the Blackrock Ward. He was subsequently elected to the Irish parliament, Dáil Éireann, in 2002 and served as a member of Parliament until 2011. He was appointed Minister of State for Children and Youth Affairs in 2008. In that capacity, he drove a reform agenda in Child Protection services. One of his lasting achievements was the establishment in 2010 of free pre-school education for all children. Barry is particularly interested in the plight of mothers and children in the developing world. Sociological Imagination

05:59
This video is an introduction of C. Wright Mills concept of the sociological imagination. Understanding and being able to exercise the sociological imagination helps us understand the relationship between the individual and society. Mills focuses on the distinction of personal troubles and public issues. For example, exercising is not just a personal behavior but is vastly influenced by society. The example of obesity in the United States is used to help explain this concept. Further examination of the sociological imagination can be found on page 6 in the text Sociology 2e by OpenStax College.

Why you should make useless things | Simone Giertz

11:58
In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions -- designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more -- rarely (if ever) succeed, and that's the point. "The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don't always know what the best answer is," Giertz says. "It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn't the answer, but at least you're asking the question." Ronald A. Beghetto & James C. Kaufman - Creativity and the Common Core

02:52
For more information on the book, Teaching Creativity in the Common Core Classroom, click here: http://store.tcpress.com/0807756156.shtml Creativity and the Common Core State Standards are both important to today’s teachers. Yet, for many educators, nurturing students’ creativity seems to conflict with ensuring that they learn specific skills and content. In this book, the authors outline ways to adapt existing lessons and mandated curricula to encourage the development of student creativity alongside more traditional academic skills. Based on cutting-edge psychological research on creativity, the text debunks common misconceptions about creativity and describes how learning environments can support both creativity and the Common Core, offers creative lessons and insights for teaching English language arts and mathematics, and includes assessments for creativity and Common Core learning. Featuring numerous classroom examples, this practical resource will empower teachers to think of the Common Core and creativity as encompassing complementary, rather than mutually exclusive, goals. Book Features: Shows how teaching skills mandated by the CCSS and teaching for creativity can reinforce one another. Helps teachers better understand what creativity is, how to develop it, and how to assess it in meaningful ways. Examines the many misconceptions about creativity that prevent teachers from doing their best work. Provides classroom examples, ideas, and lesson plans from successful teachers across disciplines. Ronald A. Beghetto is associate professor of educational psychology at the Neag School of Education, University of Connecticut. James C. Kaufman is professor of educational psychology at the University of Connecticut and founding director of the Learning Research Institute at California State University at San Bernardino. John Baer is professor of teacher education at the School of Education, Rider University, Lawrenceville, NJ.

On being young black men changing the world | Brandon Hill & John-Lancaster Finley | TEDxStanford

12:46
The opening photo of Brandon Hill and John-Lancaster Finley as Stanford seniors in graduation gowns welcoming the latest class of freshmen breaks too many stereotypes to count on one hand, say the self-described activists. In their talk sharing the secrets of making change within the elite world of their top-tier university and the community beyond, best friends and VP and President of the Stanford student body, Hill and Finley explain what they’ve learned about speaking out and being heard without caving to stereotypes, unreasonable expectations and a culture where they want to push without being labeled “angry black men.” It’s a dance they have perfected with lessons applicable to every walk of life. Brandon is a graduating senior at Stanford where he serves as the student body Vice President over the university's 16,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Originally from Eden Prairie, Minnesota he is double majoring in political science and African/African American studies and is driven to make an impact on long standing social injustices like racial caste and educational inequality. Brandon has interned for the White House, UNICEF Tanzania, and YouTube and in 2012 co-founded an urban social innovation incubator for high school students called Enza Academy. He is currently building an education startup called Grio with three other Stanford students. Brandon eventually plans to run for public office. John-Lancaster Finley is a senior majoring in Political Science and minoring in Urban Studies, and was born and raised in America’s Finest City: San Diego, California. He currently serves as Stanford's student body president. Within student government, he has served as Frosh Council President, and two terms on the ASSU Undergraduate Senate. Elsewhere at Stanford, he is currently a student event coordinator for Cardinal Nights, a core member of the Black Student Union, and on the leadership board for Stanford Democrats. He is also a proud Eagle Scout, and usually spends his free time playing the saxophone. John-Lancaster aspires to a career in public service and plans to run for office in the future. How language shapes the way we think | Lera Boroditsky

14:13
There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world -- and they all have different sounds, vocabularies and structures. But do they shape the way we think? Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky shares examples of language -- from an Aboriginal community in Australia that uses cardinal directions instead of left and right to the multiple words for blue in Russian -- that suggest the answer is a resounding yes. "The beauty of linguistic diversity is that it reveals to us just how ingenious and how flexible the human mind is," Boroditsky says. "Human minds have invented not one cognitive universe, but 7,000." Best Guitar Lessons: what to look for in a private teacher or instructor

04:54
Best Guitar Lessons: what to look for in a private teacher Looking for private Jazz guitar instruction? Make sure that you get the most out of it. Finding a good teacher can be tricky. Here's some advice (from a teacher). A good Jazz guitar teacher should be : -Well Located: Close to your home, or not too far, at least! You don't want to drive 3 hours for a 60-min lesson. -Available: Don't get a tutor that is NOT able to teach you on a regular basis. For example, if your Jazz guitar instructor is a "hot" player in town, he may go on tour a lot, and cancel lots of the lessons with you. -Flexible: Schedule-wise, you want to ability to decide on the frequency. My personal advice for adult is one lesson every 2-3 weeks. (Every week is too much.) -Not too expensive nor too cheap: You want to get the best teacher in your area that you can afford. But don't get the cheapest guy around either. So, get a teacher that charges more than 15$ per lesson!!! We often see this in classified ads: "30 years experience, first lesson free. 17$ an hour." Don't call that guy! If he's been around 30 years and can't charge more than this, he's probably a very bad, disorganized tutor. Or worst: a desperate one! Seek a university teacher if you can. They often teach outside the university. Make sure you can afford 4-5 lessons at LEAST. -Organized: Seek a Jazz guitar mentor that is organized, that has a method. See if he has clear follow up on previous students. See if you can get references from past students... See how the teacher prepares for each lesson with *you*. YOU are the customer and you are trying to improve. Does your tutor have clear planning? Or is it just "winging it" and showing you some stuff at each lesson? Also: Does the teacher have enough materials to teach? (handouts, tunes, exercises, etc.) and lastly: find a tutor that is well BALANCED. A guy that won't have you practice just scales (or just chords) for 6 months! :-) -Interested in your progress: Your Jazz guitar teacher should genuinely interested in YOU and your progress. A teacher discussing more his life and his career is not likely to help you. He's going to "vibe" you. A crucial example of this: how much does the teacher play during the lesson? I strongly believe that the STUDENT should be playing more notes, chords, etc. during the lesson. If the teacher is more interested in himself (playing lots), then it's a bad sign. ---- In summary: see your lessons as an investment in YOURSELF. Call some teachers, shop around and seek a tutor that can provide for you. Even if your teacher will have shortcomings (we all do), strive to get the best Jazz guitar instructor around! Good luck. How to Maximize Your Financial Aid With Special Circumstances

05:02
Brian Nash, owner of Nash College Planning Strategies, is a college planning advisor who steers parents through the confusing and frustrating financial aid process and student positioning . Brian has also written the free eBook "How to Beat The High Cost of College", filled with important financial planning advice that can save parents tens of thousands of dollars on their child's college tuition. CONTACT US PHONE: (951) 225-4622 EMAIL: Brian@nashcps.com WEBSITE: http://www.NashCollegePlanning.com FACEBOOK: http://tinyurl.com/nashcps **************************************** In this short video, Brian Nash, a college financial aid consultant, looks at specials circumstances that could affect the financial aid package a student is eligible for. This includes having an academically-gifted, athletically-gifted or minority student, being divorced or separated, owning your own business or being unemployed. Divorce or separation If you are divorced or separated and have a child applying for college, make sure that the financial aid forms are completed by the parent with whom the student lives for the greater part of the year. If the parent is remarried, you must include the income and assets of the step-parent as if he or she was the biological parent. Strange, I know, but that's just how the formulas work. Academically or athletically gifted students Many parents believe that if their child is not the valedictorian or the star quarterback that they can't possibly get a scholarship or a preferential financial aid package. This is not so. In fact, it's all about proper positioning and we've made a video specifically on this issue. The truth is, if you and your child have realistic expectations then there are many opportunities available for you. Students who apply to colleges where they academically rank in the top 25% of incoming freshmen have a good shot at getting a strong financial aid package. Likewise, talented athletes can get great packages from division II and III schools who want to beef up their sports teams. The point is, you don't have to be in the top 1% of scholars or athletes to get a great deal on college. It's all about finding the right fit for your son or your daughter. Parents and students with unrealistic expectations often spend a year at the wrong school before coming back home with a lowered self esteem and lowered excitement about school. Getting positioned properly will save you the time and the money of this type of tragedy. Minority students Colleges love to promote the fact that they have a diverse student body and are always hungry to enroll minority students. If your child is Black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian or generally non-white, you are probably eligible for a money saving program so contact your child's top colleges and find out about the availability of scholarship programs for minorities. Owning your own business Owning your own business can be a big help when it comes to getting money for college. Business assets are counted much less heavily than personal assets. Also, you have the ability to control (or lower) your income during the years that your child is in college, thereby making you eligible for more financial aid. Recently unemployed If you recently lost your job or you own your own business but cannot make a living in the current economy, you must make the college financial aid officer aware of this. There is something called "special circumstances", and a financial aid officer can use "professional judgment" to help you out in this situation.
