TEDxUTK 2014 at the Howard H Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy The University of Tennessee Knoxville Filmed on February 22, 2014 http://www.tedxutk.com/ Barry Bruce: Growing Electricity: Plugging into Plants Barry Bruce, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology, is a leading expert in sustainable energy research; his work focuses on adapting the biological machinery in plants to produce electricity and biofuels. Dr. Bruce is a highly recognized researcher and educator. He was recently recognized as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2014. In 2007, Forbes recognized Dr. Bruce as one of “Ten Revolutionaries That May Change the World”. This was an international recognition that is based on his seminal work on applied photosynthesis. Dr. Bruce has developed a system that taps into photosynthetic processes to produce efficient and inexpensive energy. He collaborated with researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ecole Polytechnique Federale in Switzerland to develop a process that improves the efficiency of generating electric power using molecular structures extracted from plants. The biosolar breakthrough has the potential to make "green" electricity dramatically cheaper and easier. He has been featured in the New York Times, NPR, the Boston Globe, Discover, ABC news and many technical publications. He has published nearly 100 publications and has been invited to speak in over 15 different countries. UTK recently honored him with the Senior Faculty Research and Creative Achievement award, which is the highest award, offered to a scientist in the College of Arts and Sciences. 10 Lessons You Wish They'd Taught In School

Subscribe for a new video ►► http://goo.gl/XFN9BN 10. Barry White Jr., an English teacher at an elementary school in North Carolina, is one cool dude. He shakes hands with many students, but has very different routines in doing so for each student. The routines range from those understated handshakes to elaborate dances, shuffles and salutes. Now how cool is that? Gimme five, fist-bump high, do the twist and let’s end it on a high high-five that misses. See… I can be cool too…. Source: https://goo.gl/YBSw2v 9. In Phoenix, Oregon, the Armadillo Technical Institute, a charter school, has no janitors. Do you know why? It doesn’t need any… because all the students there in grades 6 through 12 take turns cleaning up their school and keeping it very presentable. Hey, I don’t wanna suggest putting any of our hard-working school janitors out of work, but this seems to me a great thing to put our young ones to work and keep them busy and proud of the work they do. Maybe our school janitors can take some students under their wings and show ‘em how it’s done. Source: https://goo.gl/O4hPbe 8. The headteacher of an elementary school is cracking down on parents who send their kids to school with terrible packed lunches. Examples included a cold Happy Meal bought the previous evening and one that had only two packets of crisps. Jon Carthy insisted parents pack better lunches for their kids, with fruits and vegetables and fresh meat or fish. Parents responded positively. Source: https://goo.gl/SxruFr 7. One school in Essex, England, is having parents return to the classroom for some tutoring on math. This is being done because the parents can’t help their kids with solving problems. It’s actually a voluntary program, but, surprisingly, more than 50 parents have shown up to take part in it. Source: https://goo.gl/mNbP9W 6. In Germany, it’s becoming very popular for children ages 3 to 6 to enjoy an outdoors kindergarten. This forest-type of kindergarten allows kids to play, explore and learn in a natural, outside environment. Studies show that a child’s development is greatly enhanced through this. Source: https://goo.gl/onlfwh 5. In Australia, students as young as 13 are interviewing prospective teachers who have applied for jobs at their school. And although the education union there is looking down on the process, Peter Hutton, the principal of Templestowe College, say it’s a fantastic process and about 70 percent of the staff there are employed through this unusual hiring method. So… what do you teachers out there think of that? Source: https://goo.gl/qI96Pf

Check out these: https://www.drberg.com/reviews And get more info with Dr. Berg's Books: http://amzn.to/2ypFAXw http://amzn.to/2fANYvK Take Dr. Berg's Advanced Evaluation Quiz: http://bit.ly/EvalQuiz Your report will then be sent via email analyzing 104 potential symptoms, giving you a much deeper insight into the cause-effect relationship of your body issues. It's free and very enlightening. Dr. Berg talks about the power of intermittent fasting. This is not a diet, but a pattern of eating. Why does it work? Because it triggers Growth Hormone and inhibits insulin. The purpose of intermittent fasting is to lower insulin, take the stress off insulin and the gland that makes it - pancreas, and thus restore your metabolism. This can heal a plateaued set-point. If you have fat in your mid-section, then we know you have high insulin. INSULIN RESISTANCE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxl8h... WHAT TO EAT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHKay... Start with 3 meals per day, no snacking. Then do 3 meals per day but only eating your 3 meals in a 8 hour window, thus fasting for 16 hours. Ultimately, you want to fast for 20 hours and eat within a 4 hour window - 2 meals per day. If you add exercise, high intensity interval training, you can greatly enhance Growth Hormone even more. Why no one cares about Syria | Barry Andrews | TEDxUCD

18:40
Barry Andrews is CEO of GOAL, an international humanitarian agency, whose TEDxUCD 2014 talk is entitled 'Why No One Cares About Syria' Every generation has its humanitarian catastrophe and ours, according to Barry, is Syria. In this TEDxUCD talk Barry asks the question as to why we have an inability to separate the political from the humanitarian in order to address the morally indefensible death of people in conflict zones. Giving examples of Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur, Barry in his TEDxUCD talk notes that the international community may not recognise the catastrophe at the time it is happening. In Syria 160,000 people have been killed, 3 million refugees have left the country and 6 million people are internally displaced. In this TEDxUCD talk Barry asks with evidence like this, why is this humanitarian catastrophe not being addressed? Barry Andrews has been the CEO of GOAL since January 2013. A former Minister with the Irish Government, Barry was educated at Blackrock College, Dublin and at University College Dublin (UCD), where he received a Master's Degree in Modern History. He began his career as a history teacher, and spent seven years teaching in secondary schools in Dublin. He was called to the Bar in 1997, and practiced as a barrister for five years. Barry became a public representative in June 1999 when he was elected to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for the Blackrock Ward. He was subsequently elected to the Irish parliament, Dáil Éireann, in 2002 and served as a member of Parliament until 2011. He was appointed Minister of State for Children and Youth Affairs in 2008. In that capacity, he drove a reform agenda in Child Protection services. One of his lasting achievements was the establishment in 2010 of free pre-school education for all children. Barry is particularly interested in the plight of mothers and children in the developing world. We are looking for stocks that we expect will move in a predictable direction. We want to take a position with a predefined stop level and profit target. Sounds easy right? In a lot of ways it is. But there are literally thousands of different strategies for trading the market. Every trader has a unique approach to trading. Our goal is to teach you our strategies. I have developed a series of profitable trading strategies for beginners. Our Trading Courses focus on the most fundamental aspects of a successful trade. // Chart Patterns After you understand risk management and proper stock selection, we teach you how to find stock patterns on charts. These patterns are how we base our risk and reward. We look for chart patterns that have well defined areas of support and resistance. We will use previous support levels as our stop price, or our risk, and we look at previous resistance areas as our initial profit target, or our reward. If the profit vs loss ratio is 2:1 we will take the trade. I teach both day trading strategies and swing trading strategies. For day trading we focus primarily on 5min charts while swing traders focus more on daily charts. The patterns in general are the same. I teach traders how to find patterns in real-time including Bull Flags, Bear Flags, Flat Tops, Flat Bottoms, and Rubber Band Reversal Setups. // Trading Strategies Learning risk management, proper stock selection, and chart patterns is important, but those alone don’t create a trading strategy. A trading strategy requires details on the time of day you take these trades, what type of stocks you like to trade, what percentage to success you expect. All our students are required to papertrade and prove to me that they can trade on a percentage of success that is high enough to justify real trading. If you can’t make money in a demo account, you have no business trading a real account. We have saved students hundreds of thousands of dollars by encouraging paper trading while they are learning. The market will be here for a long time to come. The important thing for you right now is to build up the skills to trade the market successfully. You will learn that once you possess the skills to consistently make $20.00/day all it takes to make $200 is larger share size. Then all it takes to make $2000 is again, larger share size. The hardest part is being consistently green just $20/day. So that is our initial target for all of our students. Profitable trading 4/5 days per week for at least 3 months. How great leaders inspire action | Simon Sinek

http://www.ted.com Simon Sinek presents a simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question "Why?" His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers -- and as a counterpoint Tivo, which (until a recent court victory that tripled its stock price) appeared to be struggling. Music as a Language: Victor Wooten at TEDxGabriolaIsland

18:31
Victor Wooten is an innovator, composer, arranger, producer, vocalist, and multiinstrumentalist. He has been called the greatest bass player in the world. He is a skilled naturalist and teacher, a published author, a magician, husband and father of four, and a five-time Grammy award winner. In Music as a Language Wooten makes the case for learning music in the same way as we learned our first language, calling for a more natural, less academic approach. He makes the point that, as babies, we weren't taught our first language or corrected when we made a mistake. We didn't even know we were beginners and got to 'jam' with people much better than us. Wooten draws on his own musical education as an example of how taking this approach can deliver great results. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Let's teach for mastery -- not test scores | Sal Khan

Yes, it's complicated, but educator Sal Khan shares his plan to turn struggling students into scholars by helping them master concepts at their own pace. Why you should make useless things | Simone Giertz

11:58
In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions -- designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more -- rarely (if ever) succeed, and that's the point. "The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don't always know what the best answer is," Giertz says. "It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn't the answer, but at least you're asking the question." Environmental Literacy and the Four Laws of Ecology

Here you will find a treasure of information on the world’s greatest challenge: taking care of our planet for everyone around us and those to come. http://www.project-el.eu We dig into the information mountain called the Internet and we turn every coin of the treasures we find to give you only the best. Of course, we ask you what you like the most and adapt our digging to your preferences. We do not produce much new stuff as we like to save resources, but when we do not find what we are looking for, we go ahead and make it ourselves. We believe that being well informed, or literate, is the only way to be on top of the mountain of actions and decisions we need to take and make, every day. Especially those that really make a difference. “Be the change you want to see in the world” – Gandhi So with this website we are trying to make a little change: educating and raising awareness among people. We are Clara, Danielle, Federica and Lara and we come from Sweden, USA, Italy and Germany. The master’s programme Environmental Management and Policy at Lund University in Sweden brought us together, and helped us develop the ideas that led to this website. We hope you will enjoy it and most of all, you will find it useful. Now, go get literate!

Arthur Ramthun: Plant Electrotropism | EU2015

30:14
JOIN US for the EU2016 Conference: Elegant Simplicity//June 17-19//https://www.thunderbolts.info/wp/2015/12/30/eu2016-home-page/ Plant electro-tropism is plant response to natural internal and external electrical forces. Voltage recordings done on a variety of trees and plants show very large numbers of electrons continuously flowing towards branch tips, with or without leaves. Using voltage recordings, ohm measurements, the strength of Earth’s electric field from references, and assumptions, electrical forces were then calculated using basic electric force equations. Two dimensional electrical forces with assumed angles were reduced using vector analysis to a resultant force at the branch tip, as an example. From the vector analysis, the resultant electric force vector and the branch tip is strong enough to define its direction. As the branch tip grows, lignin forms and structurally holds the growing tip direction. The branch tip growth eventually forms an “electric line of force” in all parts of the woody plant strong enough to resist gravity and other mechanical influences. Plant parts with insufficient lignin to resist gravity, droop downward. In short, woody tree parts are a physical record of electrical flow, just like a Lichtenstein Figure is a physical record of electrical flow. Arthur Ramthun PE grew up on the family farm and graduated with honors with a BS in Agricultural Engineering from Michigan State University in 1978. He has worked at John Deere, Sperry New Holland, Flower Creek Dairy Farm and is presently working as a supervisory engineer doing civil engineering works. His work on Plant Electro-tropism has been done on his own time and expense, is outside his current employment duties, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by his current employer.
