Science Documentary: Mental Disorders, Brain Trauma, Stress and Anxiety, a Documentary on the Brain

56:12
Science Documentary: Mental Health Disorders, Brain Trauma, Stress and Anxiety, a Documentary on the Brain Dealing with mental health disorders is one of the greatest challenges facing governments around the globe. Diseases such as alzheimers and depression rob the individual and society of mental capital and well being. One in four people suffer from a mental health disorder. Disorders like alzheimers, schizophrenia, depression, mania, etc. , impact our cognitive functioning. And as a result, it impacts how we function in our homes and at work. So it is imperative to detect these disorders early, and treat them early. There are two types of cognition. There is cold or rational cognition, and hot cognition. Cold cognition helps us make the majority of our decisions in our daily life. Hot cognition helps us with making social decisions and emotional decisions. There are key areas of the brain that respond to stress and trigger anxiety. The thalamus is the area of the brain that responds to sights and sounds. The thalamus breaks down things we see by size, shape and color and then sends a signal to the cerebral cortex. This gives the things we see meaning and enables us to be conscious of what we are seeing or hearing. The prefrontal cortex is very important for stopping the anxiety response after a threat has gone away. The section of the brain that is responsible for emotion is the amygdala. The amygdala's primary function is to trigger the fear response. The bed nucleus of the striaterminals prepetuates the fear response the locus ceruleus receives a signal from the amygdala and causes rapid heart beat, sweating, pupil dilation and other classic anxiety responses. The hippocampus is the part of the brain that stores memory or emotional baggage derived from stressful situations. Stress, anxiety, and fear are triggered through your senses. Fear is a essential, and very useful, response; whereas anxiety is something that is completely irrational. You think with your brain, and ideas are not floating in air. So how do you get ideas from neurons? Because you think with your brain, every idea you have is physical, and is given by a neural circuit in the brain. Many of those neural circuits are fixed for life, and so are the things you learn early on in life and very often they are metaphorical ideas. So if you do not have a neural circuit for understanding an idea, you wont understand it at all. The classical view of what reason actually is, has failed. And that view says that all reason is conscious, but in fact, 98% is unconscious. This is because the brain functions in parallel and reason, or consciousness, functions linearly. Many things are happening inside your brain and you don't even truly understand why they are there. People mostly think in frames and metaphors. Metaphors are not in language, but are in thought. What is BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOPATHOLOGY? What does BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOPATHOLOGY mean?

What is BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOPATHOLOGY? What does BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOPATHOLOGY mean? BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOPATHOLOGY meaning - BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOPATHOLOGY definition - BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOPATHOLOGY explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Biological psychopathology is the study of the biological basis of mental illness. It attempts to elucidate the genetic and neurological etiology behind psychological disorders, including schizophrenia, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders. Although it interacts with clinical psychology, it is a specialized subset that usually takes place in an experimental context. It is known by several alternative names, including clinical neuroscience and experimental psychopathology. It is an interdisciplinary approach that comes from sciences such as neuroscience, psychopharmacology, biochemistry, genetics, and physiology, in order to examine the biological basis of behavior and specifically psychopathology. Biological psychopathology and other approaches relating to mental illness are not mutually exclusive, but many basically attempt to deal with the illness through different levels of explanation. Due to the focus on the biological processes of the nervous system, however, biological psychopathology has been particularly important in developing and prescribing drug based treatments for mental disorders. In practice, typically both medication and psychological therapy are used in synchronization to treat mental illness. Biological psychopathology is specifically offered as a specialty in the PhD program at the University of Minnesota, in its high ranked psychology department. Biological psychopathology is a field that focuses mostly on the research and understanding the biological basis of major mental disorders such as bipolar and unipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. Much of the understanding thus far has come from neuroimaging techniques such as radiotracer positron emission tomography(PET), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, as well as genetic studies. Together, neuroimaging with multimodal PET/fMRI, and pharmacological investigations are revealing how the differences in behaviorally-relevant brain activations can arise from underlying variations in certain brain signaling pathways. Understanding the detailed interplay between neurotransmitters and the psychiatric drugs that affect them are key to the research within this field. Significant research includes investigations relevant to biological bases such as biochemical, genetic, physiological, neurological, and anatomical fields. In a clinical viewpoint, the etiology of these diseases takes into account various therapies, diet, drugs, potential environmental contaminants, exercise, and adverse effects of life stressors, all of which can cause noticeable biochemical changes. Sigmund Freud initially concentrated on the biological causes of mental illness and its relationship to evident behavioral factors. His belief in biological factors lead to the concept that certain drugs, such as cocaine, had an antidepressant functionality. In the 1950s the first modern antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs were developed: chlorpromazine (Thorazine), which was one of the first widely used antipsychotic medications to be developed, and iproniazid, which was one of the first antidepressants developed. The research on some of these drugs helped to formulate the monoamine and catecholamine theories, which alluded to the fact that chemical imbalances provide the basis for mental health disorders. New research points to the concept of neuronal plasticity, specifically mentioning that mental health disorders may involve a neurophysiological problem that inhibits neuronal plasticity. This field expresses the importance of accurately identifying and diagnosing mental health disorders. If not accurately diagnosed, certain treatments could only worsen the previous condition. This can be difficult since there are numerous etiologies that could reveal symptoms of mental health disorders. Some important disorders to focus on are: seasonal affective disorder, clinical depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, generalized anxiety disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Schizophrenia - Mental Disorder (Hindi) शक की बिमारी

Please watch: "Black Magic - (Hindi)- काला जादू By Amol Kelkar (M.D.)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdw88XrroFk --~-- Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by abnormal social behaviour and failure to understand what is real. Common symptoms include false beliefs, unclear or confused thinking, hearing voices that others do not hear, reduced social engagement and emotional expression, and a lack of motivation. People with schizophrenia often have additional mental health problems such as anxiety disorders, major depressive illness, or substance-use disorders. Symptoms typically come on gradually, begin in young adulthood, and last a long time. The causes of schizophrenia include environmental and genetic factors. Possible environmental factors include being raised in a city, cannabis use during adolescence, certain infections, parental age, and poor nutrition during pregnancy. Genetic factors include a variety of common and rare genetic variants. Diagnosis is based on observed behaviour, the person's reported experiences, and reports of others familiar with the person. During diagnosis a person's culture must also be taken into account. As of 2013 there is no objective test. Schizophrenia does not imply a "split personality" or "multiple personality disorder" – conditions with which it is often confused in public perception. The mainstay of treatment is antipsychotic medication, along with counselling, job training, and social rehabilitation. It is unclear whether typical or atypical antipsychotics are better. In those who do not improve with other antipsychotics clozapine may be tried. In more serious situations – where there is risk to self or others – involuntary hospitalization may be necessary, although hospital stays are now shorter and less frequent than they once were. About 0.3–0.7% of people are affected by schizophrenia during their lifetimes. In 2013 there were an estimated 23.6 million cases globally. Males are more often affected than females. About 20% of people do well, and a few recover completely. Social problems, such as long-term unemployment, poverty, and homelessness are common. The average life expectancy of people with the disorder is ten to twenty-five years less than for the general population. This is the result of increased physical health problems and a higher suicide rate (about 5%). In 2015 an estimated 17,000 people worldwide died from behaviour related to, or caused by, schizophrenia. Epidemiology, Etiology, and Risk Factors in Mental Health

04:55
This video describes the concepts of epidemiology, etiology, and risk factors. Epidemiology includes studying the risk factors, causes, progression, characteristics, and distribution of mental health disorders (or any disorder). Etiological factors are causal, although in the mental health treatment field, etiology can be difficult if not impossible to identify for many mental health disorders. If a factor is truly etiological to a specific mental health disorder, then removing that factor, in theory, would prevent the development of that mental health disorder. Risk factors are associated with the development of a mental health disorder, but are not necessarily etiological. All etiological factors are risk factors, but not all risk factors are etiological.

Anatomy of an Epidemic - The Explosion of Mental Illness in the West

01:01:13
Buy Book: http://www.fdrurl.com/whitaker Robert Whitaker discusses his book 'Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America' In this astonishing and startling book, award-winning science and history writer Robert Whitaker investigates a medical mystery: Why has the number of disabled mentally ill in the United States tripled over the past two decades? Every day, 1,100 adults and children are added to the government disability rolls because they have become newly disabled by mental illness, with this epidemic spreading most rapidly among our nation's children. What is going on? Anatomy of an Epidemic challenges readers to think through that question themselves. First, Whitaker investigates what is known today about the biological causes of mental disorders. Do psychiatric medications fix "chemical imbalances" in the brain, or do they, in fact, create them? Researchers spent decades studying that question, and by the late 1980s, they had their answer. Readers will be startled—and dismayed—to discover what was reported in the scientific journals. Then comes the scientific query at the heart of this book: During the past fifty years, when investigators looked at how psychiatric drugs affected long-term outcomes, what did they find? Did they discover that the drugs help people stay well? Function better? Enjoy good physical health? Or did they find that these medications, for some paradoxical reason, increase the likelihood that people will become chronically ill, less able to function well, more prone to physical illness? This is the first book to look at the merits of psychiatric medications through the prism of long-term results. Are long-term recovery rates higher for medicated or unmedicated schizophrenia patients? Does taking an antidepressant decrease or increase the risk that a depressed person will become disabled by the disorder? Do bipolar patients fare better today than they did forty years ago, or much worse? When the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) studied the long-term outcomes of children with ADHD, did they determine that stimulants provide any benefit? By the end of this review of the outcomes literature, readers are certain to have a haunting question of their own: Why have the results from these long-term studies—all of which point to the same startling conclusion—been kept from the public? In this compelling history, Whitaker also tells the personal stories of children and adults swept up in this epidemic. Finally, he reports on innovative programs of psychiatric care in Europe and the United States that are producing good long-term outcomes. Our nation has been hit by an epidemic of disabling mental illness, and yet, as Anatomy of an Epidemic reveals, the medical blueprints for curbing that epidemic have already been drawn up.
