I have been using this method successfully for the past 7 years and I want to share my experience plus tips on using natural family planning successfully to avoid unintended pregnancies without taking birth control or using a condom. It's different for everyone, I hear it can take even 6 months for a female body to start ovulating again. I must have gotten lucky, because it happened very quickly for me. They contain hormones that suppress ovulation. The most effective type is the combination pill which contains both estrogen and progestin - a synthetic form of progesterone. These 2 hormones interfere with the normal menstrual cycle to prevent ovulation. The menstrual cycle refers to the monthly events that occur within a woman’s body in preparation for the possibility of pregnancy. Each month, an egg is released from an ovary in a process called ovulation. At the same time, the lining of the uterus thickens, ready for pregnancy. If fertilization does not take place, the lining of the uterus is shed in menstrual bleeding and the cycle starts over. The menstrual cycle is under control of multiple hormones secreted by the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and ovaries. Basically, the hypothalamus produces gonadotropin-releasing hormone, GnRH; the pituitary secretes follicle-stimulating hormone, FSH, and luteinizing hormone, LH; while the ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are involved in a REGULATORY network that results in monthly cyclic changes responsible for ovulation and preparation for pregnancy. The 2 hormones that are required for ovulation are: FSH, which starts the cycle by stimulating immature follicles to grow and produce a mature egg; and LH, which is responsible for the release of the egg from the ovary - the ovulation event itself. Two other hormones, estrogen and progesterone, are at high levels after ovulation, in the second half of the cycle. They suppress FSH and LH during this time, preventing the ovaries from releasing more eggs. If fertilization occurs, estrogen and progesterone levels REMAIN HIGH throughout pregnancy, providing a continuous suppression of ovulation. On the other hand, in the absence of pregnancy, their levels FALL, causing menstrual bleeding. The levels of estrogen and progesterone in the combination pills mimic the hormonal state after ovulation, tricking the ovaries into thinking that ovulation has already occurred; FSH and LH are constantly suppressed, no egg is matured or released. The pills are taken every day for three weeks, followed by one week of placebo pills containing no hormones. During the week of placebos, estrogen and progesterone levels fall, triggering a so-called withdrawal bleeding, or fake periods. The bleeding serves as a convenient indication that fertilization did not happen, but it is not required for birth control. In fact, there exist continuous-use contraceptive pills with less or no placebos, resulting in less or no menstrual periods. These pills are particularly beneficial for women who suffer from menstrual disorders such as excessive menstrual bleeding, painful menstruation and endometriosis. For lactating women, or those who cannot tolerate estrogen, there are mini-pills that contain only progestin. These are not as effective as combination pills at preventing ovulation. Their effect relies more on the ability of progestin to promote secretion of a thick cervical mucus to obstruct sperm entry.

Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate and norethisterone enanthate are two long acting intramuscular injections used for contraception. It acts by inhibiting ovulation, by suppressing the reproductive hormone release from pituitary gland. The endometrium becomes thin and etrophic preventing the implantation of fertilized egg. After stopping the injection the body needs time to revert back the hormones, the return of fertility depends on duration since how long you have been using the injection. Average return of fertility is 9-10 months with DMPA, 4-8 wth norethisterone enanthate. Studies shoe that 68% become pregnant after 12 months and 83% after 15 months.

You wanted to know if it's risky to get pregnant before your period regulates after stopping birth control pills. And actually, most women should have regular cycles after stopping birth control pills. A lot of women are actually prescribed birth control pills, because they help to regulate their cycles, and they've had a history of having irregular periods, and so that helps to regulate them, and then after they stop taking them, their period should be regular, and that makes ovulation more predictable, and thus you can time intercourse with ovulation and have a higher chance at conceiving. If you go off birth control pills and haven't had a period within 3 months after, then talk with your doctor, and there may be underlying causes contributing to that, and they can determine if further investigation or intervention is warranted for you. Now as for it being risky to conceive, the time at which a doctor recommends that a woman tries to conceive is based on their knowledge of her medical history. For example, there might be some reasons why conception should be delayed. Maybe the woman has some medical problems that need to be addressed, like hypertension, obesity, thyroid problems. And actually, these things should be addressed while the woman is on birth control, so that when she gets off, it's well-managed, and if she gets pregnant, then it would be okay, as she has the best shot possible at having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. In short, if your doctor has told you to wait a few months before trying to have a baby, then it would be best to follow their advice, because it's based on their knowledge of your circumstances. How to Calculate Safe Period to Avoid Pregnancy: Free, Simple, and Effective Method

Learn how to calculate safe period to avoid pregnancy using a free, simple, natural and effective method. HOW TO CALCULATE SAFE PERIOD TO AVOID PREGNANCY: FREE, SIMPLE, AND EFFECTIVE METHOD! Calculating your safe period and using it in preventing unwanted pregnancy is free. It has no side effects; it is always available and quite effective if properly calculated and applied. But many people find this very confusing and difficult to calculate. And so, today, we will be looking at a simple method of calculating one's safe period and applying it in preventing pregnancy. 1) Okay, the first thing to note is that: you should start counting from the date you started bleeding (not the day you finished the bleeding). For example if you started bleeding on the 4th, you start counting from the 4th (not the day you finished but the day you started). The 4th will be day 1 then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and so on the day you started bleeding will be your day 1. 2) The second thing to note is: when it comes to calculating your safe period you must avoid Day-14 and days around Day-14: These days are the "dangerous days". So if you started bleeding on the 4th, that would be your day 1 then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14...then the 14th  day  -- and days around Day-14 should be avoided: these are the dangerous days because, these are the days the egg is likely to be released and the probability of getting pregnant is very high! 3) The third thing to note here is that: every other day apart from this danger period constitutes your safe period; so all these days aside Day-14 (and days around it) constitutes your safe period. As you get closer to Day-14, the likelihood of getting pregnant increases and away from Day-14, the likelihood decreases. So, the day you started bleeding is part of your safe period but as you get closer to Day-14, the likelihood of getting pregnant increases. Days around day 14...avoid, but other days are safe and down to your next period next month are safe. The danger period are the days to avoid intercourse which are the days around 14th day. I will repeat it one more time: The first thing is start counting from the first day you started bleeding that would be Day 1. The next thing is avoid Day 14 and days around day 14. I hope that helps but before we leave, 2 very important points to note: 1) First this method is best for ladies with a fairly regular menstrual circle where the difference in months is just few days. You might see your period 17th this month and 18th or 19th next month or 15th or 16th next month. The difference is just few days plus or minus. We can say you have a fairly regular menstrual circle then you can apply this method of contraception. 2) The second point is this method is not advisable for ladies with very short menstrual circle say for ladies that see their menses every 3 weeks and it is also not advisable for ladies with very long menstrual circle say for ladies that see their period once in every 2 months. To pill or not to pill? That is the question. Hormonal Birth Control Pills Hormonal or chemical birth control pills will be explained in this video, with the pros and cons of each type. But before I demonstrate the different types, I would like to explain to you how hormonal birth control pills work. When a lady is pregnant, ovulation (or egg release) does not occur. That’s how our body’s system normally works. The hormones in a woman’s body are balanced in a certain way that makes the hormones that stimulate the release of the eggs – called the ovulation hormones – to become inactive during pregnancy. So we thought: If we give the woman pregnancy hormones in pills, we will be able to inhibit ovulation, in other words: to stop it from happening, which, in turn, would prevent the pregnancy to occur. So the scientists decided to put the pregnancy hormone and the female hormone in a pill. This gives us an idea about the first type of birth control pills. This type consists of synthet-ic forms of hormones – the pregnancy hormone progesterone (called progestin) and the female hormone oestrogen. On the other hand there’s another type of birth control pills that consists of the pregnancy hormone only, and in a very small amount. It is called the mini Pill or the Progesterone-Only Pill (P.O.P.). The pills I will talk about are not the only hormonal birth control methods. We can take other forms of chemical or birth control at the doctor’s office, which would have the same mechanism of action. So, back to the pills. Let me explain them now. Let’s start with a combined pill. “Combined” because it has a combination of hormones. Let’s know more about it. The combined pill consists of progestin – a synthetic progester-one (the pregnancy hormone) – and oestrogen (the female hormone). You will need to take a pill daily for 21 days, starting from the 7th day of your menstruation. Even if you’re still bleeding, you must start using the pill. Take a pill daily for 21 days and stop the pill for 7 days, taking into consideration that your period cycle is 28 days. The combined pill is a good birth control choice in cases of: • You don’t mind to take hormones for birth control • You usually suffer from pains [I’m not sure about what comes here → 2:40] during menstruating, since it will ease the dysmenorrhea. • If your period is not regular, this will regulate it. • You bleed heavily during the period: it will decrease the amount of bleeding, which in turn might prevent you from becoming anaemic. • If you have acne: this might improve your skin condition. • You’re not a smoker The combined pills are not good if you … don’t wish to take any hormones … are Breastfeeding … are a heart patient … have hypertension or high blood pressure … have risk of thrombosis or atherosclerosis … have had diabetes for more than 20 years … have a liver or gall bladder disease … have a history of breast cancer in the past 5 years … are suffering from recurrent migraines or have the symptoms that proceed mi-graine, called the aura … are overweight … have been taking medications such as antibiotics, epilepsy medications or anti-depressants All these may weaken the effect of the combined pill. Always read the patient in-formation leaflets. This birth control method is 99% effective, on condition that the pill is taken on the same time every day. How to Prevent Nausea from Birth Control Pills Nausea and birth control pills Since the introduction of the first birth control pill in 1960, women have come to rely on the pill as an effective way to prevent pregnancy. More than 25 percent of women who use birth control today are on the pill. The birth control pill is more than 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy when it’s taken correctly. Like any drug, it can cause side effects. Nausea is one of the most commonly reported side effects of birth control pills. Why does the pill cause nausea? The queasiness is the result of estrogen, which can irritate the stomach. Pills that contain a high dose of estrogen, especially emergency contraceptive pills, are more likely to cause stomach upset than pills that have a lower dose of this hormone. Nausea is more common when you first start taking the pill. How to treat nausea when you’re on the pill There is no specific treatment for nausea caused by the pill. However, you may find relief from mild bouts of nausea with these home remedies: Consume only light, plain foods, such as bread and crackers. Avoid any foods that have strong flavors, are very sweet, or are greasy or fried. Drink cold liquids. Avoid any activity after eating. Drink a cup of ginger tea. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Take a series of deep, controlled breaths. Applying pressure to certain points on the wrist has also been found to relieve mild nausea. This traditional Chinese remedy is called acupressure. Nausea caused by the pill should resolve within a few days. If the nausea persists, make an appointment to see your doctor. Nausea that doesn’t let up can have an effect on your appetite and weight. You may need to switch to another type of pill or a different form of birth control. How to prevent nausea when you’re on the pill To prevent nausea, don’t take your birth control pill on an empty stomach. Instead, take it after dinner or with a snack before bed. You can also take an antacid medicine about 30 minutes before taking the pill. This may help keep your stomach calm. Before using the emergency birth control pill, speak with your doctor to see if an anti-nausea medication can also be used. They may give you a prescription for an anti-nausea medicine, especially if this pill has made you feel sick in the past. Progestin-only emergency pills are less likely to cause nausea and vomiting than pills containing both estrogen and progestin. Don’t stop taking the birth control pill just because you have nausea. You could get pregnant if you aren’t using another birth control method as a backup. How do birth control pills work? Birth control pills contain man-made forms of the female hormones estrogen and progestin or progestin only. These hormones prevent pregnancy by stopping the release of a mature egg from a woman’s ovaries (ovulation). Birth control pills also thicken mucus around the cervix. This makes it harder for the sperm to swim to the egg and fertilize it. The pill also changes the lining of the uterus. If an egg is fertilized, the altered uterine lining will make it more difficult for the egg to implant and grow. Emergency contraceptive pills such as Plan B contain a higher dose of the hormones found in the regular pill. This high dose of hormones can be hard on your body. Therefore, you should only take emergency contraceptives if you didn’t use contraception during sex or you experienced birth control failure. Examples of birth control failure are a condom that broke or an intrauterine device (IUD) that fell out during sex. Emergency contraceptives can stop ovulation and prevent an egg from leaving the ovary. These pills can also prevent sperm from fertilizing the egg. Other side effects of the birth control pill In addition to nausea, the most common side effects caused by the pill include: breast soreness, tenderness, or enlargement headaches moodiness reduced sex drive spotting in between periods, or irregular periods weight gain or loss Most of these side effects are mild. They usually go away within a few months after you start taking the pill. One rare but serious side effect of birth control use is a blood clot in the leg (deep vein thrombosis), which if untreated can lead to a blood clot in your lungs (pulmonary embolism) and possibly death. This risk is rare. However, your risk is increased if you have used the pill for a long time, you smoke, or you are older 35 years. Choosing a birth control pill that’s right for you When choosing a birth control pill, you need to strike a balance. You want enough estrogen to prevent pregnancy but not so much that it makes you sick to your stomach. Your doctor can help you find a birth control pill that suits your needs. While you’re taking the pill, follow the directions carefully. Take your pill every day. If you skip a dose, you’ll need to take the missed dose as soon as possible.

What that means is that you take 21 active pills, and instead of taking the week of placebo pills, throw the pill pack away and start a new pack of pills. When you do that, you can skip your periods and not cause any harm to your body. It does not affect the contraceptive effectiveness of the pills, and it does absolutely no harm to your body. If you are considering skipping your periods with the birth control pills and you are uncertain of how to do it, call your doctor or your nurse practitioner. We are happy to provide that information for you to make your life easier, and there is nothing wrong with making your life easier when you're on birth control pills.

What are the signs you are pregnant while on birth control? You hit that row of do nothing pills in the birth control pack and your period does not come. It could come late for other reasons like hormones out of whack. And it was concern that my hormones would be messed up that I did not use them. Then I cannot say that you got pregnant on the pill because you used antibiotics. Antibiotics can make you poop a lot, passing the pills through faster. If you were taking thyroid medication, it would metabolize them faster. However, if you get a stomach bug and throw them up, you could get pregnant. If I’m throwing up a lot, that’s a sign I am pregnant on birth control. If you are nauseous or throwing up in the morning but not in the afternoon or evening, then it is likely due to pregnancy. If it is all day, then you may need antibiotics or another medication. I have not been taking antibiotics. If you were on the pill, you’d be able to guess you were pregnant if you had a light period the next cycle and none the one after that. With a birth control implant, though, a woman would not have a period at all. Well, most of the time. You could develop breast tenderness in early pregnancy. I get that with my normal cycle. Peeing a lot is a sign of pregnancy. Or a urinary tract infection. If you used an injected contraceptive, your odds of pregnancy are really low barring medication that interferes with it. I do not use the injectables. What are the other signs I could be pregnant while on birth control? If you used an intrauterine, it causes heavier than normal periods. If you’re pregnant, the period stops. That’s usually normal regardless of the contraception method. You could be certain you did a pregnancy test and it came back positive. Don’t birth control methods interfere with that? If you used a condom, cervical cap or even an intrauterine, you’d have the normal hormonal cycles for ovulation and pregnancy. It is only the hormone based pills and shots that throw off your hormones. And it may be that my contraceptive method failed. If you were taking birth control pills, the estrogen or progesterone won’t throw off the pregnancy test. In fact, no medicine you take for anything would mess it up. So a pregnancy test is the best way to see if I’m pregnant. And it would be a sure sign to talk to your doctor about the best way to stop your birth control, since you clearly won’t need it for a while.

Theoretically, it would also help regulate my menstruation cycles, which were very irregular at the time. The first pill she recommended made me gain 4 kg in a month and look like an air balloon. My breasts inflated and were horribly painful. So we switched to a lighter one, with a lower dose of hormones. I adapted fairly well to that one and continued taking it for years - 12 years to be more precise. With a few breaks here and there, I took hormones to control my own hormones for 12 years. I never knew how my cycle worked, I didn't even know how many days my cycle had! Well, I know that 40 years back, the pill gave women unprecedented sexual freedom. But over the years studies have shown that it comes with a cost. Many diseases have been related to the intake of contraceptive pills, not to mention the pity that it is not to know how your body works. This year I decided I wanted to stop taking it once and for all. I was living in Germany at the time and started searching about copper IUDs. But for non-citizens, it costed 600€ and I'd have to wait for months to get it done. So one day I saw an ad for Natural Cycles, claiming to be the first certified contraceptive app. Even though I hate how ads follow our searches and I tend to block them all, that one particularly caught my eye. I clicked and started reading through the page. "Wow, is it really possible?" "Isn't it just another version of the rhythm method?" When I finished reading, I was convinced I wanted to try it. I showed it to my partner, who spent a couple of hours in the process of turning skepticism into conviction. In the end, we talked and decided to try it! The decision of what I take and how I manage my fertility would ultimately be mine, but we're a couple that plan and decide things together. :) I bought the package of app + thermometer. I couldn't wait for it to arrive. It sounds silly, but I really felt like a kid on Christmas Eve. On the first night I woke up many times, so excited I was to take my temperature for the first time. And the excitement continued as I saw the first rise in the temperature when I ovulated and the first drop on the day I got my period. Basically, the app tells you whether you're fertile or not based on your basal temperature. You have to measure it ideally every day, at around the same time, as soon as you wake up. Our hormones fluctuate during the cycle and this makes our basal temperature change. When you insert our daily temperature in the app, it calculates whether you're fertile and tells you whether you need to use protection on that day. It's so brilliant! I've been using it for 3 months and couldn't be happier! However, there are other ways to check on which stage of your cycle you're in, such as the cervical fluid, the cervical position and LH tests. Checking those 3 extra things will virtually guarantee a very precise information about your cycle. This is why I highly recommend reading the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. This book is important for any woman who wants to understand how her body, her cycles and her fertility works. Even though it can be highly scientific at times, the author just makes it as funny as it can be. She turns the process of getting to know your body into something fun and engaging. I would love to know how you control your fertility and prevent pregnancy. Pills, rhythm, condom, spermicide, app, iud... each woman should decide what's best for her. But one thing is true: knowledge about your body is invaluable! When you get to know your cycles, you'll start to listen to your body and profit from its knowledge. Applying Your Findings - Figure out when you're most likely to be fertile. Emergency contraception commonly known as the morning after pill i'm sure is known to many. What is this emergency contraception? It is a method of contraception that is used by a woman before she misses her periods or thinks that they might definitely be or more probability of having a failure having used to particular method of contraception. For example if there is a rupture in the barrier method of contraception like the condom. This emergency contraception works either by stopping the ovulation or postponing the ovulation or interfering with the normal post-ovulatory changes that are naturally occurs on the lining of the uterus following an ovulation to prepare a bit to receive if the egg is fertilized. This emergency contraceptive pill is best taken 72 hours within 72 hours of unprotected contact or exposure. But the efficacy is maximum if it is taken within 24 hours of the protected contact. But remember an emergency contraceptive pill does not give you a hundred percent protection against pregnancy. The efficacy is only between 90 and 95 percent. So after taking an emergency contraception if you miss your cycle, then please rule out a pregnancy first, it is a always preferable that you take an emergency contraceptive pill after consulting the gynaecologist especially if you are taking any medications on a long term basis for any chronic medical issues or if you have any history of any drug allergy. Also remember that this emergency contraceptive pill cannot be used in a regular basis as a regular contraception. It is not a substitute for a regular contraception and likewise it cannot be taken multiple times within one menstrual cycle as they can cause severe hormonal imbalance resulting in a normal uterine bleeding.
