Dr. Susan Love: Making Patients Participants

01:01
Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book changed the game in cancer literature, empowering patients and outraging many doctors. Educated in Puerto Rico, Mexico City, New York and Boston, Susan Love was already a pioneer when, in 1980, she became the first female General Surgeon on the staff of Boston's Beth Israel Hospital. She was determined not to become a breast surgeon, yet now more than thirty years later, Love has drastically altered the equations surrounding the disease. She founded the Faulkner Breast Center in Boston and the Revlon UCLA Breast Center in Los Angeles and remains a Clinical Professor of Surgery at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. And as president of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, she oversees an active $4 million dollar research program centered on breast cancer cause and prevention. But her impact is perhaps greatest where it is widest: as a trusted guide to women worldwide. 1990's Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book ("the bible for women with breast cancer" according to The New York Times) is now in its fifth edition and her Love/Avon Army of Women partners women and scientists in order to accelerate basic translational research.

Dr. Susan Love: Cancer Research on Real Women

02:30
Watch more of her interview at http://www.makers.com/dr-susan-love. Love explains her innovative breast cancer research initiative and its critical response to traditional cancer studies. Educated in Puerto Rico, Mexico City, New York and Boston, Susan Love was already a pioneer when, in 1980, she became the first female General Surgeon on the staff of Boston's Beth Israel Hospital. She was determined not to become a breast surgeon. But, she would later remember, "I started to realize how women weren't getting information. If they came in with a lump or what they thought was a lump, the doctor would say, 'Don't worry your little head about that, dear.'" Now more than thirty years on, Love has drastically altered the equations surrounding the disease. It all insures that Dr. Love's fierce intellect and her famous bedside manner continue to save lives worldwide.

What Makes the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation Unique?

01:55
Today, there are countless breast cancer organizations and it is hard to even keep up. But there are few organizations that come to mind when you mention breast cancer research. One of the most popular, is a research foundation called The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. We met with Chief Visionary Officer Dr. Susan Love and got to chat about her organization. She mentioned that as a breast cancer surgeon, she was getting more and more disappointed at having to put patients through all the breast cancer treatment and yet knowing they weren’t going to do well. That is why she started the foundation, to make a difference through research. Watch this video as she shares what truly makes the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation unique. #BoobProject (Hozier, Florence Welch etc) - Boob Spelled Backwards is Boob

05:05
DONATE: https://give.bcrf.org/fundraise?fcid=496734 DOWNLOAD: Rdio, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Rhapsody etc. All money raised goes to Breast Cancer Research Foundation, funding breast cancer research on six continents. As far as catchy palindromes go, ‘bOOb’ is a good one. Regardless of your age, it immediately grabs your attention. Now that we have your attention, let us remind you it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) and we have something important to share with you. KFOG Radio (San Francisco/San Jose) has released the charity single, “Boob Spelled Backwards is Boob.” The song was written by morning co-host Mike “No Name” Nelson’s eight-year-old boy (Archer) as a way of coping with the fact that his mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Mike was new to KFOG In The Morning, but had been friends with Renee and Irish Greg McQuaid for years. In January 2015, the show’s members and audience were told of Archer’s song and the inspiration for it. Listeners began calling in, sharing their stories and support for Mike’s family – it was a very emotional morning. So emotional, that Greg couldn’t stop thinking about what he (and KFOG) could do to help. An idea germinated – KFOG began involving the musicians who regularly visit the radio station by asking them to add their voices and instruments to the melody. Over the last several months, support for #BoobProject grew beyond everyone’s expectations. What began as a child’s lyrical tribute to his mother has been transformed into a song/video featuring world famous artists (it’s “We Are The World” for BCA).
