Quality Management: Essential Planning for Breweries

01:34
For more information: http://www.brewerspublications.com/books/quality-management/ To order: http://members.brewersassociation.org/store/detail.aspx?id=505 Craft beer sales are flourishing across the U.S. and breweries are opening at a rapid rate. Without a continual emphasis on producing the highest quality beer, the health of the entire craft brewing industry is at risk. In other words, proper quality management for small, regional and national breweries is critical. Mary Pellettieri's guidebook decodes how to create and manage a quality system in the context of the brewery environment. Written for staff who manage quality in breweries of all types and sizes—new and established alike—this book affords an understanding of how quality management is intertwined at all levels of the operation. Whether you are a brewmaster wearing many hats, lab staff, production staff or on a quality team, this book will guide you in developing a comprehensive program that will grow with your brewery, help ensure quality processes in the brewery and continue providing great beer for your fans.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) Kim Jordan is co-founder of New Belgium Brewing Company which began in 1991. In New Belgium's early days, Kim performed many of the usual duties of an entrepreneur in a start-up brewery: packaging, cleaning, sales and delivery, marketing, and human resource development to name a few. Nearly 20 years later, Kim is CEO and President of New Belgium and is still actively involved particularly in Sales, Branding and Organizational Development. Much of her time is spent on mid-range and long-term company strategy development. She is currently a Member of Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper's Renewable Energy Authority Board, Vice Chair of the 1% for the Planet Board, Director on the Brewers Association Board and Ex Officio Board Member for the Beer Institute. She remains involved in a few Fort Collins community Boards as well.

Open-book Management at New Belgium Brewery

11:10
Open-book Management at New Belgium Brewery Most Americans define "working" as getting paid to make money for somebody else. As parts of a centralized organization, many employees are directed by a manager who in turn reports to another upper level boss, which eventually leads up to the top with the CEO. Such a rigid hierarchy can make it difficult for lower level employees to have a true understanding of how the business is run, let alone any say in the company's overall direction. That isn't the case, however, for Colorado-based New Belgium Brewery. The company has been an intimate operation ever since founders Jeff Lebesch and Kim Jordan poured their first pint in 1991. Inspired by the local breweries he encountered on a family trip to Belgium, Lebesch began brewing in his own basement with a limited clientele of friends and family. As craft beers grew in popularity through the 1990s and 2000s, New Belgium emerged as one of the biggest brands in the industry with its flagship ale Fat Tire finding its way into bars not just in Colorado (or Lebesch's basement), but across the country. Even as the company has expanded into a nationally-recognized brand, New Belgium remains committed first and foremost to the people directly responsible for its success: its employees. From brewmasters to bartenders, the staff at New Belgium enjoys a level of empowerment that other runners in the rat race could only dream of. First of all, several operational divisions are almost completely decentralized. For example, New Belgium's quality assurance section contains no ranking manager to direct the staff. Instead, employees are trusted to make their own decisions if they find an opportunity to improve a product's quality. With less red tape to wade through, quality assurance is given more time to focus on the task at hand, thus improving productivity significantly. But implementing such an open system is a risky endeavor. Employees need to be self-motivated and possess a legitimate interest in the overall performance of the company, or else productivity can suffer instead of soar. New Belgium keeps its staff tethered to the business's well being by turning them into shareholders. After an employee has worked at the brewery for a year, he or she is given a small slice of the company to own. As New Belgium profits go up, the value of that employee's share goes up as well. Since employees are not only staff but also shareholders, New Belgium treats them as such with regular updates on the status and future of the company. Called "open-book management," employees are trained in basic financial practices and business lingo, so that Lebesch and Jordan can deliver board of directors-style meetings with their staff that informs them about the company's performance and upcoming plans. Employees are even given a chance to discuss upper management's decisions and to chime in with their own ideas. Keeping staff apprised of the company's daily dealings motivates employees because it teaches staff the importance of how their specific job fits into the overall fabric of the company. Employees are in turn more aware of their own significance in the grand scheme of the brewery, making them more conscious of the decisions they make on the job every day. The overall environment of the American workplace is changing rapidly. As employees become more educated and managers more open to staff discussion, management structures like New Belgium's could become much more common.

The Architecture of a Multi-Cloud Environment with Kubernetes [I] - Brian Redbeard, CoreOS

36:11
The Architecture of a Multi-Cloud Environment with Kubernetes [I] - Brian Redbeard, CoreOS Kubernetes is an orchestration platform that enables running distributed systems, which are designed with the philosophy of spreading wide to best prepare for outages. This is achieved by deploying your cloud applications at least across multiple hosts, and at best across multiple cloud vendors. Getting Kubernetes configured to run across multiple cloud environments, including on-premises, hybrid deployments, is a tricky undertaking. Hybrid deployments are a feature many organizations want to implement for a variety of reasons, including security over their data, reliability, and more. Brian Redbeard, chief architect at CoreOS, will discuss the importance of using open source tools to prevent cloud vendors from locking their users into their walled gardens, and will explore the challenges of making Tectonic, CoreOS’s Kubernetes implementation, able to run on multiple cloud platforms. About Brian Redbeard Brian Harrington, also known as Redbeard, is chief architect at CoreOS. He is a developer, hacker, and technical writer in the areas of open-source development and systems administration. His time spent in both defensive and offensive computing have combined with his readings of classical anarchism to present new ideas in organizational hierarchies for software development. He has been featured on Al Jazeera as an expert in the field of computer security, and has been seen and heard on Bloomberg Television and National Public Radio. He currently resides in Oakland, CA and was grudgingly elected president of the hackerspace HacDC.

How This Town Produces No Trash

05:06
Watch the next episode about Lauren Singer, who produced only a jar's worth of trash in 2 years: http://bit.ly/1QsnSqu Subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/c/seekerstories?sub_confirmation=1 In 2003, the local government in Kamikatsu, Japan decided to require that all residents comply with a new, rigorous recycling program - perhaps the most rigorous in the world. Since then, the town composts, recycles, or reuses 80% of its garbage. It may not technically be 100% zero waste, as the remaining 20% goes into the landfill, but it's a remarkable achievement for an entire community, in such a short amount of time. The impacts have been positive - cutting costs for the community drastically, as well as improving the conditions of the lush and beautiful environment that surrounds the town in Southeast Japan. Residents must wash and sort virtually anything that is non-compostable in their household before bringing it to the recycling sorting center. Shampoo bottles, caps, cans, razors, styrofoam meat trays, water bottles...the list goes on and on (literally) into 34 categories. At the sorting center, labels on each bin indicate the recycling process for that specific item - how it will be recycled, what it will become, and how much that process can cost (or even earn). It's an education process for the consumer. All kitchen scraps must be composted at home, as the town has no garbage trucks or collectors. And as for other items, reuse is heavily encouraged. According to Akira Sakano, Deputy Chief Officer at Zero Waste Academy in Kamikatsu, the town has a kuru-kuru shop where residents can bring in used items and take things home for free. There is also a kuru-kuru factory, where local women make bags and clothes out of discarded items. At first, it was difficult to be come accustomed to the new rules. "It can be a pain, and at first we were opposed to the idea," says resident, Hatsue Katayama. "If you get used to it, it becomes normal." Now, it's even being noticed within Kamikatsu's businesses. The first zero-waste brewery has opened in Kamikatsu, called Rise and Win Brewery. The brewery itself is constructed of reused materials and environmentally friendly finishes. By 2020, Kamikatsu hopes to be 100% zero waste, with no use of landfills, and to forge connections with other like-minded communities in the world, spreading the practice of zero-waste. Supported Employment Program / SEMP Supported Employment encourages people to work within their communities and experience social interaction, integration and pride in accomplishing work goals. Keon acts as a hiring agency for individuals with developmental disabilities. Keon has numerous individuals who are pre-screened, pre-trained & work ready. Keon provides assistance such as Job Coaching, Case Management, transportation, assistive technology and specialized job training. Types of Employment: Individual Placement - A consumer is placed in a job within the community which best suits his or her abilities and preferences. Training is provided by a Job Coach. As the employee gains skills and confidence, the job coach gradually spends less time at the worksite and is eventually replaced by a Case Manager. Enclave - A group of consumers (generally 2-5) working in a community business or industry, while receiving full-time training, supervision, and support by a Job Coach. In an enclave, individuals may be assigned separate tasks and the group may be dispersed throughout the jobsite. Our Supported Employment Staff Consists of: Job Coaches: People who are hired to provide specialized on-site training to assist the consumer with learning and performing the job and adjusting to the work environment. These individuals also provide transportation to job sites and provide oversight and supervision to consumers while working in an enclave or mobile work crew. Case Managers: People who are hired to provide complete oversight of the consumer in all aspects of their employment needs (i.e. completing 6-month service plans, monthly worksite visits, providing or arranging Job Coaching if necessary, maintaining contact with employer(s), family/caregiver, medical professionals and Medicaid Service Coordinator workers if applicable). Engaging communities about planned burning in an iconic landscape: Mount Macedon

05:36
Keeping the community, businesses and stakeholders informed about bushfire management on public land is a key priority for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP). While working to reduce bushfire risk in the iconic Mount Macedon Ranges, DELWP staff from the Grampians Region worked hard to ensure that potentially impacted community members were well informed about intentions to carry out planned burning activity. In this video, DELWP District Manager (Midlands) Jon Rofe, Top of the Range Tea Rooms Proprietor Luke Chapman, and Braemar College Principal Russell Deer talk about living and working in a landscape with high bushfire risk, and being kept informed about activity undertaken by DELWP to reduce that risk.

005 - Water Resources In this video Paul Andersen explains how water is unequally distributed around the globe through the hydrologic cycles. Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. Freshwater is divided between surface water and groundwater but must me stored and moved for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Subsidized low cost water has created a problem with water conservation but economic changes could help solve the problem. Do you speak another language? Lucette Brewing Expansion

11:26
Many things are afoot at Lucette Brewing Company, in Menomonie, WI. A new facility is going up, which joins the two original buildings. The facility housing the brew plant, fermenters, canning line and keg cleaning operations with the cold storage building. The new building will provide expanded space in the brewery by moving some operations into the new area. They are also planning a tasting room with bar and lounge area, and a dry storage area to open space in their cold storage for beer. I got to visit with the head brewer, Jon, and he walked me through the changes that will be happening. Swing by their new facility when it's open. It's the perfect spot to relax after a ride, run or walk on the Red Cedar Trail.

Power Players with Mikey Taylor & Grant Cardone

50:04
Grant interviews Mikey Taylor, professional skateboarder, entrepreneur and real estate investor. Mikey grew up firmly in the middle class in Thousand Oaks, California. He never really thought or worried about money or issues while he was growing up. He picked up a skateboard when he was 14, was consumed by it and never stopped. He says he enjoyed it so much because it was hard to learn and master. It was the first time that he could channel his addictive and hyper-competitive personality into a sport. Skating became a competition against himself. He pushed how good he could become and how far he could take the sport. He says that his obsession and drive were something he was born with. He harnessed it with his talent to become successful. He enjoyed skateboarding and knew he wanted to make money at it. But he also knew that skateboarding alone wouldn’t get him to the goal he created for himself. As he became more popular in the sport of skateboarding, he struggled with the culture. It was anti-establishment and success. He found it hard to keep positive in the negative environment and struggled. He finally had a wake-up moment and acknowledged he hated living his life like that. He started working on the person he wanted to be. He started meditating, setting goals, seeking guidance, working on his reactions and responses to his life. Now he is very active with family, business, planning and managing the life he wants to live. Mikey is very open about his finances and always lived well below his earnings. He always planned on a transition from skating to another life. He wanted the freedom to choose what that was. He always invested as much as he could into passive-income producing opportunities. At the height of his career, he made $450,000 per year. Averaged out he was making $140,000 per year. The normal path for a skater was to make the most money you could, spend it, and then downsize the rest of your life. He started investing in real estate storage units. These were low overhead and high cash flow opportunities. At the same time he was very entrepreneur-focused and started a clothing, backpack, craft brewery and skateboard companies. He and his partners later sold the craft brewery for a little over $60,000,000. He currently has eight storage properties valued at close to $200,000,000. Fat Tire, Slim Footprint: Crafting Sustainable Beers and Brands

59:40
Fresh, foamy and deliciously hoppy, craft brews and sustainability seem to go hand-in-hand. Often local and organic, this is one industry where brewers often take an interest in being green and consumers are willing to pay a premium over the mass-produced competition. But, what makes craft beer an industry that is particularly interested in sustainability? Is it a unique target market or something special about beer itself? Please join Jenn Vervier, Director of Sustainability and Strategic Development at New Belgium Brewing and Chris OBrien, author of Fermenting Revolution: How to Drink Beer and Save the World, for a discussion of sustainability motivations, initiatives and messaging in the craft brew industry.

NAVTechDays2013 NAV ALM with VS Team Foundation Server Microsoft Dynamics NAV

01:37:23
NAV ALM with VS Team Foundation Server (TFS) A perfect - no, even better - alternative to the various home brewed source control and product planning systems is Visual Studio Team Foundation Server (TFS). TFS is a powerful ALM (Application lifecycle management) tool that can support your NAV development projects. Secure your code with history using TFS source control or easily propagate your product to your customer projects. Track bugs and plan your work using TFS work items. Design and manage your test using TFS test manager and even build your fobs using the TFS build system. But how to do this with the NAV development environment that is not integrated with Visual Studio? MVP Luc van Vugt will give you a resume of what he has been doing for years now: integrating TFS and NAV. Next to TFs itself a number of interfacing tools will be discussed and demonstrated. How to stay calm when you know you'll be stressed | Daniel Levitin

12:21
You're not at your best when you're stressed. In fact, your brain has evolved over millennia to release cortisol in stressful situations, inhibiting rational, logical thinking but potentially helping you survive, say, being attacked by a lion. Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin thinks there's a way to avoid making critical mistakes in stressful situations, when your thinking becomes clouded — the pre-mortem. "We all are going to fail now and then," he says. "The idea is to think ahead to what those failures might be." 2. Principles & Strategies in Environmental Law

50:21
Environmental Politics and Law (EVST 255) The United States' fragmented, piecemeal approach to environmental law is presented through the cases that led to the creation of major environmental statutes such as the Clean Water Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The variety of federal agencies and levels of government that participate in creating and implementing regulation contribute to the fragmentation of American environmental law. Environmental law seeks to balance the costs of environmental degradation with the economic benefits that companies reap. However, the uncertainty of environmental costs leads to a slow and ineffective regulation process. 00:00 - Chapter 1. A Course About Defining and Solving Problems 04:09 - Chapter 2. The US's Fragmented Approach to Environmental Law 09:22 - Chapter 3. The Central Questions of Environmental Law 30:08 - Chapter 4. A Society with Elaborate Environmental Law 37:33 - Chapter 5. Overview of Cases for the Course Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: http://open.yale.edu/courses This course was recorded in Spring 2010.
