Quality Management: Essential Planning for Breweries
For more information: http://www.brewerspublications.com/books/quality-management/ To order: http://members.brewersassociation.org/store/detail.aspx?id=505 Craft beer sales are flourishing across the U.S. and breweries are opening at a rapid rate. Without a continual emphasis on producing the highest quality beer, the health of the entire craft brewing industry is at risk. In other words, proper quality management for small, regional and national breweries is critical. Mary Pellettieri's guidebook decodes how to create and manage a quality system in the context of the brewery environment. Written for staff who manage quality in breweries of all types and sizes—new and established alike—this book affords an understanding of how quality management is intertwined at all levels of the operation. Whether you are a brewmaster wearing many hats, lab staff, production staff or on a quality team, this book will guide you in developing a comprehensive program that will grow with your brewery, help ensure quality processes in the brewery and continue providing great beer for your fans.

Open-book Management at New Belgium Brewery
Open-book Management at New Belgium Brewery Most Americans define "working" as getting paid to make money for somebody else. As parts of a centralized organization, many employees are directed by a manager who in turn reports to another upper level boss, which eventually leads up to the top with the CEO. Such a rigid hierarchy can make it difficult for lower level employees to have a true understanding of how the business is run, let alone any say in the company's overall direction. That isn't the case, however, for Colorado-based New Belgium Brewery. The company has been an intimate operation ever since founders Jeff Lebesch and Kim Jordan poured their first pint in 1991. Inspired by the local breweries he encountered on a family trip to Belgium, Lebesch began brewing in his own basement with a limited clientele of friends and family. As craft beers grew in popularity through the 1990s and 2000s, New Belgium emerged as one of the biggest brands in the industry with its flagship ale Fat Tire finding its way into bars not just in Colorado (or Lebesch's basement), but across the country. Even as the company has expanded into a nationally-recognized brand, New Belgium remains committed first and foremost to the people directly responsible for its success: its employees. From brewmasters to bartenders, the staff at New Belgium enjoys a level of empowerment that other runners in the rat race could only dream of. First of all, several operational divisions are almost completely decentralized. For example, New Belgium's quality assurance section contains no ranking manager to direct the staff. Instead, employees are trusted to make their own decisions if they find an opportunity to improve a product's quality. With less red tape to wade through, quality assurance is given more time to focus on the task at hand, thus improving productivity significantly. But implementing such an open system is a risky endeavor. Employees need to be self-motivated and possess a legitimate interest in the overall performance of the company, or else productivity can suffer instead of soar. New Belgium keeps its staff tethered to the business's well being by turning them into shareholders. After an employee has worked at the brewery for a year, he or she is given a small slice of the company to own. As New Belgium profits go up, the value of that employee's share goes up as well. Since employees are not only staff but also shareholders, New Belgium treats them as such with regular updates on the status and future of the company. Called "open-book management," employees are trained in basic financial practices and business lingo, so that Lebesch and Jordan can deliver board of directors-style meetings with their staff that informs them about the company's performance and upcoming plans. Employees are even given a chance to discuss upper management's decisions and to chime in with their own ideas. Keeping staff apprised of the company's daily dealings motivates employees because it teaches staff the importance of how their specific job fits into the overall fabric of the company. Employees are in turn more aware of their own significance in the grand scheme of the brewery, making them more conscious of the decisions they make on the job every day. The overall environment of the American workplace is changing rapidly. As employees become more educated and managers more open to staff discussion, management structures like New Belgium's could become much more common.

How This Town Produces No Trash
Watch the next episode about Lauren Singer, who produced only a jar's worth of trash in 2 years: http://bit.ly/1QsnSqu Subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/c/seekerstories?sub_confirmation=1 In 2003, the local government in Kamikatsu, Japan decided to require that all residents comply with a new, rigorous recycling program - perhaps the most rigorous in the world. Since then, the town composts, recycles, or reuses 80% of its garbage. It may not technically be 100% zero waste, as the remaining 20% goes into the landfill, but it's a remarkable achievement for an entire community, in such a short amount of time. The impacts have been positive - cutting costs for the community drastically, as well as improving the conditions of the lush and beautiful environment that surrounds the town in Southeast Japan. Residents must wash and sort virtually anything that is non-compostable in their household before bringing it to the recycling sorting center. Shampoo bottles, caps, cans, razors, styrofoam meat trays, water bottles...the list goes on and on (literally) into 34 categories. At the sorting center, labels on each bin indicate the recycling process for that specific item - how it will be recycled, what it will become, and how much that process can cost (or even earn). It's an education process for the consumer. All kitchen scraps must be composted at home, as the town has no garbage trucks or collectors. And as for other items, reuse is heavily encouraged. According to Akira Sakano, Deputy Chief Officer at Zero Waste Academy in Kamikatsu, the town has a kuru-kuru shop where residents can bring in used items and take things home for free. There is also a kuru-kuru factory, where local women make bags and clothes out of discarded items. At first, it was difficult to be come accustomed to the new rules. "It can be a pain, and at first we were opposed to the idea," says resident, Hatsue Katayama. "If you get used to it, it becomes normal." Now, it's even being noticed within Kamikatsu's businesses. The first zero-waste brewery has opened in Kamikatsu, called Rise and Win Brewery. The brewery itself is constructed of reused materials and environmentally friendly finishes. By 2020, Kamikatsu hopes to be 100% zero waste, with no use of landfills, and to forge connections with other like-minded communities in the world, spreading the practice of zero-waste. How to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change | Allan Savory
"Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert. Engaging communities about planned burning in an iconic landscape: Mount Macedon
Keeping the community, businesses and stakeholders informed about bushfire management on public land is a key priority for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP). While working to reduce bushfire risk in the iconic Mount Macedon Ranges, DELWP staff from the Grampians Region worked hard to ensure that potentially impacted community members were well informed about intentions to carry out planned burning activity. In this video, DELWP District Manager (Midlands) Jon Rofe, Top of the Range Tea Rooms Proprietor Luke Chapman, and Braemar College Principal Russell Deer talk about living and working in a landscape with high bushfire risk, and being kept informed about activity undertaken by DELWP to reduce that risk.

Eco - Awesome Global Survival With a Multiplayer Focus - Let's Play Eco Gameplay Highlights - Part 1
Today we're checking out Eco, an awesome global survival game with a multiplayer focus. Eco isn't just about you surviving as a player, it's about helping the entire world you're living in to survive as well. Resources can be renewable, just like in our world, but only if there is a careful balance of consumption and re-population. You can hunt something into extinction, destroy a food supply, and even alter the very world you play in. Everything has a life pattern in the game, and it works 24 hours a day, with things living, eating, hunting, and just existing. This is the type of game that is probably best to be played on a multiplayer server with friends, I'll have to look into that for sure. For right now I'm just on a little private server to check out the systems and very first things in the game, but if anyone has any suggestions on a multiplayer server, I'd certainly be interested! Will you and your fellow builders collaborate successfully, creating laws to guide player actions, finding a balance that takes from the ecosystem without damaging it? Or will the world be destroyed by short-sighted choices that pollute the environment in exchange for immediate resource gains? Or, do players act too slowly, and the world is consumed by a disaster that could have been avoided if you developed the right technology? In Eco, you must find a balance as a group if the world is to survive. A world-survival game Eco is a survival game in a global sense, where it is not just the individual or group who is threatened, but the world itself. The world of Eco will be home to a population of thousands of simulated plants and animals of dozens of species, each living out their lives on a server running 24 hours a day, growing, feeding and reproducing, with their existence highly dependent on other species. Enter humans into this equation, and things get complicated. It is the role of players to thrive in this environment by using resources from the world to eat, build, discover, learn and invent. However, every resource they take affects the environment it is taken from, and without careful planning and understanding of the ecosystem, lands can become deforested and polluted, habitats destroyed, and species left extinct. In the extreme, the food supply of the ecosystem can be destroyed, along with all human life on it, resulting in server-wide perma-death. Eco is a game where the player’s actions have meaningful consequences. Everything you do affects the ecosystem, and players can destroy their food supply and world (server-wide permadeath) Create a player-run government to make decisions as a group, proposing and voting on laws Use data gathered from the world to propose and vote on laws as a group. Debate with scientific argumentation. Create a player-run economy that allows you to sell not only good but services in the form of server-enforced contracts (simulating a player driven quest system). PvP takes the form of a player-run criminal justice system. Breaking the player-made laws can result in arrest and punishment. Your food level determines your skill-increase rate, making food very important and tying players directly to the ecosystem from which it comes. A game with goals higher than entertainment. We plan to build it for schools as an augmented classroom world students share. ---------------------------------- Intro Music: Song: Kadenza - Harpuia [NCS Release] Music provided by NoCopyrightSounds. Fat Tire, Slim Footprint: Crafting Sustainable Beers and Brands
Fresh, foamy and deliciously hoppy, craft brews and sustainability seem to go hand-in-hand. Often local and organic, this is one industry where brewers often take an interest in being green and consumers are willing to pay a premium over the mass-produced competition. But, what makes craft beer an industry that is particularly interested in sustainability? Is it a unique target market or something special about beer itself? Please join Jenn Vervier, Director of Sustainability and Strategic Development at New Belgium Brewing and Chris OBrien, author of Fermenting Revolution: How to Drink Beer and Save the World, for a discussion of sustainability motivations, initiatives and messaging in the craft brew industry.

Helping Chinese Farmers Use Water More Efficiently
A World Bank-supported water conservation project integrates agricultural and management aspects, not just technical measures, to address water use and to help change farmers’ behaviors in the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi and Ningxia in China. *** TRANSCRIPT: A World Bank-supported Project Helps Chinese Farmers Use Water More Efficiently 0:03 Chang Mingqi, Chief Engineer, China Irrigation and Drainage Development Center Water scarcity is a major constraint to China’s social, economic and environmental development. Agriculture accounts for about 60% of total water use in China. There is great potential to raise irrigation efficiency. Our traditional approach was to use less water. But the World Bank focuses on achieving more efficient water use and increasing farmers’ incomes, and protecting the environment. We have set up farmers’ water users associations that has raised farmers’ awareness on saving water and addressed the “last mile” issues in water management, water fee collection, and particularly in irrigation systems maintenance. 00:51 Youngzhai Village Water Users Association, Guantao County, Hebei It is irrigation time again. According to the association’s plan, we will discuss how to arrange the order of irrigation. To be fair, let us draw lots to decide who will go first. No.1 is for those households in the west part of the village; No.2 for those in the east part; No.3 for those in the south part. 01:12 Zhao Jiangang, Head of Youzhai Village Water Users Association It is indeed easier. It used to be messy. People argued and fought. Nobody wanted to give in. After we formed the water users association, such things do not happen anymore. 01:28 Wang Weirong, Villager of Youzhai In the past, when we watered crops, we had to carry pipes to the field and make long furrows. Two or three households worked together and we flooded the fields. It was very wasteful. It is a waste of not only labor and water but also resources. 01:39 Zhao Jiangang, Head of Youzhai Village Water Users Association Our irrigation management system contains information of all water users in the village, such as the size of the farm fields and the amount of water allocated. 01:52 Wang Weirong, Villager of Youzhai A water right certificate and an IC card are all that I need. When I want to water crops, I just swipe the IC card and water will come. I just need to wait in the field and move the pipe. It takes little work, and saves more than 10 yuan ($1.50) for a mu (0.16 acre) of crops. 02:09 Jin Jianbo, Senior Engineer, Hebei Water Technology Experiemental & Extension Center This data terminal is part of the World Bank-supported Water Conservation Project. It transmits data such as the amount of water applied to the crops, soil moisture content and weather data to the data center. The data center generates irrigation scheduling and water requirements and publishes the information on the LED screen to guide farmers to irrigate more efficiently. 02:32 Wang Weirong, Villager of Youzhai We used to water crops without knowing soil moisture content. Now I look at the soil moisture forecast, and water crops according to actual water requirement. It saves money and labor. 02:42 Wang Weizhen, Villager of Youzhai Now everybody understands the need to save water. Not only should we save water but our children should also know how. 02:54 Wang Weirong, Villager of Youzhai Villagers all know water resources are scarce. We should save water for our future generations. This project has conserved water resources and achieved the goal of real water savings.

NEMA On Nairobi River Pollution
A bitter row is brewing between the National Environment Management Authority, NEMA and utility firm, Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company over the raw sewer draining into the river. Two sewer lines have been emptying their contents into the river along a 2.5 km rehabilitated stretch  commonly known as the Michuki memorial park. This comes as the country marks the 1st anniversary of the death of former environment minister John Michuki, who played a critical role in restoring the river.
