Medical Students and Seminarians to Learn More About Aging by Living With the Elderly

03:19
As Featured on Twin Cities Live on Wednesday, November 23rd, 2009. What do elders, seminarians and medical students have in common? This fall, they are all under the same roof. A new initiative designed to bring the generations together is enabling medical and seminary students to move into a senior housing facility at Augustana Apartments in Minneapolis. While medical students have visited residents at the apartments in previous years, the decision to live side by side with the older generation is a novel one. We continue to look for new ways to teach geriatrics, says Dr. Edward Ratner, associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Minnesota and medical director of Heartland Home Health Care in Roseville. Dr. Ratner began bringing students to Augustana in 2000 to give them practical experience with the unique needs of the elderly. Senior housing can be very segregated, says Dr. Ratner. At one time there were 65—95 year olds in a senior setting. Now the average age of those moving in is 80. A large fraction is frail, with little exposure to younger generations, and the potential for much loneliness. Many may lack a neighbor who can easily change a ceiling-light bulb. To remedy the older adults isolation and give them a chance to mentor a younger generation, Ratner proposed that medical students move to the Augustana Apartments to learn from and about their elderly neighbors. As Augustana currently has vacancies and students often need housing, the plan meets the needs of all involved. Dr. Ratner chose Augustana because, when bringing his second-year students to the apartments for a brief exposure, he found it was always such a helpful place. The service coordinators always made sure everything went smoothly. The residents are a really special group of people, committed to helping others. The volunteerism in the building is much greater than in other places. The universitys commitment to the service-learning concept, helping students learn by engaging in community service, was the basis for the new program which provides the medical schools only geriatric course offering. To date, two medical students have moved into Augustana Apartments. They will eat meals, attend social, recreational or religious activities, and socialize with their older neighbors. Some may transport a neighbor to see the doctor and help them navigate the health care system. Students will also complete home health aide training so they can be on call in case of emergencies. They might have to help someone in the middle of the night with something like an elastic sock, says Dr. Ratner. They will learn how to put them on and remove them. When he learned from Augustanas chief operating officer, Tim Middendorf, about medical students moving into the apartments, Gary Wilkerson, visiting professor of congregational and community leadership at Luther Seminary, was intrigued. Wilkerson who is also president of Augustana Cares board, talked with Middendorf and Patricia Lull, the seminarys dean of students, about creating a live-in program. As a result, three seminary students are moving into the Minneapolis apartments this fall. Many of the students at the seminary say they dont get the chance to work with older people or children. The program at Augustana is excellent for these people, when theyre going to go out into the world and work with the elderly, says Joan Edwards, director of housing at Augustana. Im excited about a partnership with this depth and breadth, says Dean Lull. It offers students a real context for ministry and a wonderful option for housing while they are in the seminary. In exchange, it offers the residents of Augustana an opportunity to interact with a wider variety of seminarians. Seminary student Jane Harris agrees. She moved into the apartments recently and says, Right off the bat, I could feel a sense of love and warmth from both the residents and the staff here. Jane and her fellow seminarians will be interning with Chaplain Amy Luukkonen and Pastor Jim Meyer in the coming year. Medical student Lindy Watanaskul moved in to her apartment this summer and is looking forward to getting to know her neighbors. The population is getting older, and anyone working in health care should have experience working with the elderly, she says. Its just invaluable. A very different experience from anything else thats out there. To learn more about the program, call Carol Ashwood at 612-238-5255. Article by Jenna Zark

Must See Home Care Tips - http://bit.ly/1k7Rcok Click the - like - or thumbs up tab under video above. Click -Show more- for money saving reviews! HOME CARE --RESIDENTIAL CARE HOME LINKS. Downfalls of Home Care- For people who want to stay in their own home, in- home care is an option, but often has many downfalls associated with it. This first down fall is the cost. Home care services are very expensive. Personal care agencies charge $20 to $25 dollars per hour and most have a four hour minimum which equals $80 -$100 per day for only four hours of assistance that is $2,400-$3,000 per month. The second downfall is lack of continuity of care. Often the agency sends different caregivers or personal care assistants, which can cause anxiety, mistrust and frustration for the person receiving the assistance and the family who is responsible for coordinating and making sure the schedule runs smoothly. This also makes it very difficult for the patient and the family to build a trusting relationship. While the idea of in home care is a good one and one that most people would choose, the reality, for most of us caring for loved ones at home, is that as the care needs of our loved ones increase so does the cost, both financially and emotionally. Keeping a loved one at home can easily cost about $9,000.00 per month if not more. That is $300 per day for live in care. It can also cause increased stress and strain on the family, often putting most of the responsibility on one family member, who likely has many personal and professional responsibilities to manage of their own. - See more at: http://tlcsr.com/home-care.html RESIDENTIAL CARE HOME-HOME CARE LINKS. http://www.retireathome.com/services/personal-care/ Do you have a loved one with Alzheimer's that requires care? http://www.retireathome.com/services/personal-care/ - visit here for more information! About Alzheimer's Disease: As documented by The Alzheimer's Association: Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia and accounts for 50 to 80 percent of dementia cases. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. Those with Alzheimer's live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others, but survival can range from four to 20 years, depending on age and other health conditions. Although current Alzheimer's treatments cannot stop Alzheimer's from progressing, they can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. About Retire-At-Home™ Services: The Retire-At-Home™ team is dedicated to providing comprehensive, personalized services while upholding the highest standard of excellence -- improving clients' quality of life by respecting each person's dignity and independence. Nursing Home Care Planning | Greensboro North Carolina | The Elderlaw Firm

The ElderLaw Firm North Carolina Estate Planning and Elder Care https://www.elderlawfirm.com/category/elder-care/ Call (336) 378-1122 A major part of our mission at The ElderLaw Firm is providing useful education to help folks navigate elder law estate planning in North Carolina. A pioneer in elder law, Dennis Toman became frustrated and sad that so many people could be helped but they never got the information they needed in time. So he started by writing articles and giving talks to share information that lawyers and the system traditionally used to make things complicated. Our success is based on sharing information with hard working families in North Carolina. Our clients love this. The more information we give away, the more clients call us and let us help. The secrets we share gives families knowledge and confidence about their options: how to get started and what’s important. Issues like; Retirement, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Nursing Home Care, Elder care, Living Trusts, Wills and Probate. Free seminar AT: https://www.elderlawfirm.com/category/elder-care/ We hold our Ducks in a Row Legal Webinar every few weeks so that you have a chance to get the answers you need. Join us to discover how to avoid elder and estate planning mistakes, with plenty of Q&A time with an attorney. My spouse is in a nursing home and I need help paying for care. What will I have to live off of if my spouse gets Medicaid? Well, when you’re caring for a spouse who’s in a nursing home, of course, it’s a very difficult time. One of the things going through your mind is going to be, you know, what’s going to happen if we’re going to keep spending six, seven, or eight thousand dollars a month on that care. What am I going to live on for the rest of my life? And unfortunately, there are lots of misconceptions as well as some bad advice. Some people will spend thousands and thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars. When one spouse is at the nursing home, the other spouse is living at home, the Medicaid rules allow the healthy spouse to keep one half of the accountable assets for the community spouse’s resource allowance. In addition to that, because of the way Medicaid rules work, generally what will happen is that if the spouse gets the right advice, they’re going to be able to protect pretty much all of the assets; most of the savings, all of the real estate inNorth Carolina and keep their income. So with the right advice, the spouse living at home is not going to have to worry about their own finances; all they have to worry about is how to take care of their loved one in the nursing home. Facebook Tracks Non-Users' Data (PROOF)

Facebook is really raising some eyebrows lately... Kim Horcher and Jay Washington break it down. Give us your thoughts in the comments below! "We’ve talked about the fact that Facebook is tracking everyone online — even people who choose not to open a Facebook account — long before the Cambridge Analytica revelations came to light. But now that Mark Zuckerberg had to face Congress twice in as many days, we know for a fact that Facebook is indeed doing it. The good news is that, well, we know Facebook is doing it, which means regulators may find ways to stop the practice. But the bad news is that you can’t really do anything about it for the time being, and Facebook doesn’t plan to offer non-users access to the information about them that the service collects." *http://bgr.com/2018/04/16/facebook-tracking-non-users/ NerdAlert is a talk and discussion show for the well-rounded nerd, bringing you tech news, gaming, geek culture and more EVERY DAY of the week with host Kim Horcher and friends. Taunton MA Long Term Care Insurance- Call 508-977-0000-AF Macedo Insurance

01:05
http://www.afmacedoins.com/ It is important to understand the benefits of long term care insurance (LTCi) and how it can be used to help protect your family and finances, as well as help to avoid placing the same caregiving burdens on the next generation. Most people envision themselves living a long life, investing and planning throughout their working years to create a financially secure feature where they can enjoy spending time doing the things they enjoy the most. As part of your financial planning process, it's important to understand the potential impact that needing long term care may have on your assets, your family, and your future. First of all, long term care can cost $50,000 to $100,000 a year. In 30 years, the annual cost may be as much as $250,000. Also, Medicare and traditional health insurance do not pay for long term care. Without an LTCi policy, you are essentially "self insuring" your risk of paying for care. While wealthy individuals may have the financial means to cover their costs for care, this is not a viable strategy for the majority of people. Whether people overestimate their ability to pay for care over an extended period, or convince themselves they'll never need care, the risk of needing and paying for care remains. If you've ever been in a caregiving situation, you understand the physical and emotional toll it can take. While providing care to loved ones is an act of compassion, placing these burdens on spouses, children, and other family members can create a significant emotional and physical strain, and is something many people would like to avoid. Waiting to address your future care needs - until the point at which you actually need care - may significantly impact your financial situation, your quality of life, and your ability to maintain your independence. Incorporating LTCi into your financial plan can help protect your assets, reduce the burden of care that would otherwise fall on family members, and enable you to receive care in the setting you or your elder most prefer, including the home. Long term care insurance picks up where traditional health insurance leaves off. This can cover the costs associated with injuries such as: auto and motorcycle accidents; accidents like skiing, horseback riding, or diving; extreme sports; fractures; and falls. It can also help cover the care associated with long term conditions, such as strokes, heart attacks, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Multiple Sclerosis. So I suggest you be proactive, purchase a long term care insurance policy, prepare for the worse, and hope you never need it. But also be comforted by the peace of mind knowing that if you do require help, you'll be taken care of in your time of need. Marion Somers, Ph.D. (Dr. Marion) knows the elder care arena and provides a bridge for the generational gap with resolve, results, and respect. Dr. Marion's vision provides seniors and their caregivers timely, relevant, and valuable education, resources, products, and services for a better life. Her mission's universal approach to engage and promote elder care needs worldwide creates a positive difference in the lives of caregivers and their elders. "Blitzkrieg" - What most people get Wrong - Myth vs "Reality"

"Blitzkrieg" is probably the most wrongly used word when it comes to Military History. It's buzzword effect is widely known. The question is what was "Blitzkrieg" actually and is it used "correctly" at all? Additionally, the question if "Blitzkrieg" was something unique to the Wehrmacht will be answered? »» SUPPORT MHV «« » patreon - https://www.patreon.com/mhv » paypal donation - https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=TFHEY4P4YU3NY »» MERCHANDISE - SPOILS OF WAR «« » shop - https://www.redbubble.com/people/mhvis/shop »» SOCIAL MEDIA «« » minds.com - https://www.minds.com/militaryhistoryvisualized » facebook - https://www.facebook.com/milhistoryvisualized/ » twitter - https://twitter.com/MilHiVisualized » RallyPoint - https://www.rallypoint.com/organizations/military-history-visualized » tumblr - http://militaryhistoryvisualized.tumblr.com/ Military History Visualized provides a series of short narrative and visual presentations like documentaries based on academic literature or sometimes primary sources. Understanding Home Health Care

03:41
BALTIMORE - Tuesday, Dr. Alicia Arbaje joined Megan and Charley on Good Morning Maryland at Nine to discuss those options and how important it is to ask the correct questions for home health care. Dr. Arbaje says you should consider the following when thinking about home health care: What is Home Health Care? •Health care professionals provide care in the home to help with a new or changing health problem. o Nurses serve as your case manager. They may also administer medications, change dressings for wounds, and monitor vital signs, weights, or blood sugars. o Physical, occupational, and speech therapists help with improving balance, coordination, strength, swallowing, and home safety. o Medical social workers help you cope with your illness and may refer you to community resources. o Home health aides provide companionship and help with personal services. o Home healthcare agencies also provide medical equipment if needed. • They communicate with your primary care doctor to coordinate your care. • They come a few times a week for a short time. When Should I Consider Asking My Doctor for Home Health Care? • When leaving the hospital • When medications have been changed • When there is a new diagnosis • When having difficulty walking or experiencing a fall • When having difficulty managing daily tasks What Do I Do When the Nurse Arrives? • Ask the nurse o What you need to do help get yourself better o What problems to watch out for and what to do about them o How to take your medications o How to perform special skills like changing a bandage or giving a shot o What name and phone number to call if you need help • Ask to see a physical therapist if o you are having difficulty walking or managing daily tasks • Ask to speak to a social worker if o you are concerned about how you and your family are coping with your illness o you need help with health care costs

Richardson Grove Action Now Flash Mob in Sacramento 6/9/11

06:47
GET INVOLVED TO STOP HIGHWAY EXPANSION THROUGH RICHARDSON GROVE!! SPREAD THIS VIDEO ON FACEBOOK AND EVERYWHERE! After six months of organizing rallies and actions behind the 'redwood curtain' protesting CalTrans' plan to expand Highway 101 through Richardson Grove State Park and adjacent forestland, Richardson Grove Action Now [RGAN]- on June 9, 2011- upped the ante by taking the fight to the state capital in Sacramento, where they carried out a flash mob action. The highway expansion plan has global significance, threatening some of the last 2% remaining ancient redwoods on Earth. RGAN activists rode on the White Rose bus to Oakland, Sacramento, and Glen Cove, Vallejo in order to mobilize widespread resistance to the highway expansion, demonstrate at the Capitol, and connect with an ongoing spiritual encampment established to stave off development on a sacred indigenous burial shellmound site in Glen Cove. "Worldwide, people are opposed to harming or cutting ancient redwood forests, which CalTrans plans to do; ancient redwoods have all but been wiped off the face of the earth and, like the people at Glen Cove, we are saying to developers, government and corporations, 'You have already desecrated and taken too much- We're stopping you here.'" The road widening would mutilate an ancient grove in order to facilitate trans-national corporations, nuclear materials, development, and military having greater access to the Humboldt Bay region which has been relatively protected by forest bottlenecks and winding roads. Highways 199, 299, and 36, entering the region from the East, are also on the cutting block for highway expansion. The "White Rose" bio-diesel bus was formerly used by anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, and as a support vehicle for the Longest Walk 2 in 2008, organized by AIM to draw attention to indigenous sacred sites in danger of being destroyed by developers. (The White Rose was a German anti-fascist group during Hitler's reign, executed for distributing pamphlets encouraging resistance to the Nazis.) Thousands of individuals and groups, including RGAN, have written Gov. Jerry Brown, urging him to cancel the road widening plan using the Governor's authority. RGAN made this demand at the Capitol through a contemporary direct action known as a flash mob. On the Capitol steps, despite threat of arrest from onlooking officers, RGAN activists- joined by supporters from Chico, Sacramento, Oakland, and San Francisco- busted out a flash mob version of George Clinton/ Parliament's "We Got the Funk." Followed by police, RGAN marched to CalTrans' state headquarters & chanted "No Road Widening Through Richardson Grove. We are the People and the People Say NO," handing literature to CalTrans employees & passers-by. The final Sacramento flash mob action was done on a busy street in the business district. Families took photos, and many people including a foreign magazine writer took literature to spread the word against the highway expansion. While at the Capitol, RGAN learned that four women in wheelchairs had just been arrested protesting California officials' refusal to fund peoples' survival needs- cutting healthcare, in home services, education, etc.-with ever-increasing monies going to prisons, corporations, police, and urbanized development. Gov Brown recently shut down seventy state parks to "save" $22 million; however, the state intends to sink $5.5 million of public money, matching federal funds, into the 1.1 mile highway expansion through Richardson Grove. "If CalTrans can widen the highway through Richardson Grove, a world-renowned old-growth redwood forest, they'll go to any length to convert the 101 into an interstate NAFTA artery." Although CalTrans claims that the project will not harm ancient trees, it is well-established that cutting, compacting, & excavating redwood roots, as planned for the road widening, would harm or kill the trees. Also, it appears that huge ancient redwoods would have to be cut to implement CalTrans' road widening. RGAN vows to stop this plan in the roads, offices, trees, construction sites, & gov't buildings- near and far.

Meghan Markle coat of arms in PICTURES: Does it have US symbols? The coat of arms incorporates US and UK symbolism to signify Meghan’s past and present. The intricate design shows a shield held by a lion on the left and a songbird with an open beak on the right. Beneath the shield lies a patch of grass with flowers, while a coronet is perched on its top. What are the Californian elements?.Meghan, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, has strong aspects of her Californian heritage reflected in the symbolism, Kensington Palace said in its statement. The blue background of the shield of arms represents the Pacific Ocean off California’s coast, while the two golden rays represented the state’s sunshine. In addition, three quills have been placed either side of the rays “to represent communication and the power of words”. The statement added: “Beneath the shield on the grass sits a collection of golden poppies, California's state flower, and wintersweet, which grows at Kensington Palace. ”What does the songbird mean? Two “supporters” are placed on either side of the shield as is customary to represent the husband and wife. The lion represents Prince Harry while the songbird on the right relates to Meghan, “with wings elevated as if flying and an open beak, which with the quill represents the power of communication”. The coronet - a simple crown - is formed of two crosses patée, four fleurs-de-lys and two strawberry leaves. Thomas Woodcock, Garter King of Arms, said: "The Duchess of Sussex took a great interest in the design. “Good heraldic design is nearly always simple and the Arms of The Duchess of Sussex stand well beside the historic beauty of the quartered British Royal Arms. “Heraldry as a means of identification has flourished in Europe for almost nine hundred years and is associated with both individual people and great corporate bodies such as Cities, Universities and for instance the Livery Companies in the City of London. "The technical description of the arms is "Azure a Feather bendwise Argent quilled between two Bendlets Or all between two like Feathers Argent quilled Or".
