Here's the latest movement of Cats' serenade, Allegro con neutrex, and you're probably wondering what "neutrex" means.
The theme deserves a profound explanation given its mystical charge, however, here is a brief presentation of this subject. Scholars believed that the ancient Egyptians were the first to keep the cat as a pet, about 3,600 years ago. However, in Israel a statuette of an ivory cat, of nearly 3,700 years, was founded, that is, 100 years earlier . For mystical reasons linked to cosmology, it was believed that the cats (mekhetos, as per the sacred Jewish language) were animated by an inner force that was expressed by the humidity of their snouts. This force would be what we might call today ”the cat’s soul”. During the period in which the Hebrews remained captives of the Egyptians, there was an exchange of culture and part of the Kabbalistic mystique was transmitted to the Egyptian religion. The Egyptians showed their appreciation for cats , which can be seen in statuettes, hieroglyphs, and even through the depiction of the goddess Bastet. This goddess was depicted as having the head of a cat.It was the sun goddess, symbol of fertility and protective of women. Later, when the Greeks reached Egyptians, Bastet was identified as the goddess Artemis, however, linked to the moon and not to the sun. The Greeks, influenced by this kabbalistic concept now translated with the Egyptian symbols, also incorporated to their culture this high appreciation for cats. Ailurus, a Greek word for cat, was developed as a consequence of the idea of the moisture of a cat's muzzle. Greek called it ”neutrex”. This word and its concept was passed on to the Romans, who expanded it through the empire. This is how the idea of neutrex has reached the present day. Today it is known that the health of the cat is actually manifested by the moisture of his snout. A healthy cat has a wet nose. When it dries, the cat has some disease. However, we know that it is not the "cat's soul" but only an external sign of his health condition. Current science, by studying the subject in depth, has already reached the nanoneutrex, which would be its smallest atomic particle. In other words, Allegro con neutrex means vivid and soulful. In this movement I tried to make a synthesis of the qualities of a cat. The agility, the hunter instinct, the gentle and chirpy way, in a nutshell, all the things that make this animal so appreciated by men. As the title of the movement says, this part of the string quartet is always bustling, with rhythmic fastnotes, agile like a cat. The harmony returns to the initial tonality, G major, the Great Sun of the godness Bastet, and the accelerated rhythmic pulse accentuates the joy of the major mode. The independence of the fast lines performed by each of the quartet instruments brings the sensation of a free and unpredictable movement, almost as if they were playing tag. The last movement ends with vivid energy, qualities of a cat neutrex.
