Heartburn Drugs: What Are the Risks of Taking My Heartburn Drug?

02:01
If you have taken Prilosec, Nexium or Prevacid, please listen to this important legal announcement. The Food and Drug Administration has issued several warnings to patients that are taking these types of drugs known as Proton Pump Inhibitors or PPI’s. According to the FDA, long-term use may cause problems with the body’s ability to absorb calcium, magnesium, and other nutrients. Patients who take these drugs for an extended period may be at risk of suffering kidney damage, bone fractures, heart attack and other serious side effects. Several studies have determined that there are potentially a lot of risks involved with the use of these types of over the counter acid reflux medication. In January 2016, a study found that PPI’s increase the risk of Chronic Kidney Disease by 20-50%. Damage to the kidneys may leave them unable to filter toxins from the bloodstream. Chronic kidney failure is not reversible, so any symptoms of kidney issues such as lack of urine production or fluid retention should immediately be reported to your physician. The FDA issued warnings in 2010 that PPI’s could lead to an increased risk of hip or spine fractures. Those receiving high doses for more than a year were at the greatest risk. The FDA also issued a safety alert that PPI usage may lead to low magnesium levels, which could lead to seizures, muscle spasm or an irregular heartbeat. If you or a loved one suffered kidney damage after using these drugs, learn your legal rights. You may be entitled to financial compensation. Call us right now for your free consultation.
Acid Reflux, GERD, Heartburn. The cause and solution by Dr. Peter Glidden

02:56
Acid reflux also known as heartburn or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) plagues 20% of the population unnecessarily. Yes that’s correct unnecessarily! So why are Proton Pump inhibitors (PPIs) drugs like Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid among the highest-selling classes of drugs in North America? To the tune of 9.5 billion in annual sales. Because medical doctors have it wrong when it concerns Acid Reflux. They do not know what causes it and they don't know how to cure it. So they make Billions managing it... Here are eight risk factors that Do Not cause heartburn: Smoking Pregnancy Eating a large meals Eating just before bed Lying down right after a meal Drinking alcohol, tea or coffee Eating spicy foods, citrus, fatty foods, chocolate, onions or garlic Taking medication such as aspirin, muscle relaxers or blood pressure medication These factors are known to trigger heartburn. But remember correlation does not equal causation. Medical doctors have told you that acid reflux is a result of too much stomach acid - but they can't tell you why or how this happens (it doesn't). Their ad hoc solution is to give a PPI to stop the production of stomach acid….The result no more GERD. This is like cutting off a finger to eliminate finger pain. It is an out of date, juvenile prescription which completely misses the point. Par for the course in MD land. The reality of the situation us that Acid Reflux is caused by not enough stomach acid! It is used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a condition where the acid in the stomach washes back up into the esophagus. Sometimes omeprazole is used in combination with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, clarithromycin) to treat ulcers associated with infection caused by the H. pylori bacteria (germ). Omeprazole is also used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition where the stomach produces too much acid. Omeprazole is also used to treat dyspepsia, a condition that causes sour stomach, belching, heart burn, or indigestion. In addition, omeprazole is used to prevent upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding in seriously ill patients. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. This medicine is available both over-the-counter (OTC) and with your doctor's prescription. This product is available in the following dosage forms: Tablet, Delayed Release Capsule, Delayed Release Powder for Suspension Packet Nursing NCLEX Precautions Drug information provided by: Micromedex It is important that your doctor check the progress of you or your child at regular visits. This will allow your doctor to see if the medicine is working properly and to decide if you should continue to take it. Blood and other laboratory tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects. If your or your child's condition does not improve, or if it becomes worse, check with your doctor. Tell your doctor if you or your child have Asian relatives, such as Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Taiwanese. You may need a lower dose of this medicine to treat erosive esophagitis. This medicine is sometimes given together with other medicines to treat ulcers. Be sure you understand about the risks and proper use of any other medicine your doctor gives you or your child together with omeprazole. Omeprazole may cause a serious type of allergic reaction when used in patients with conditions treated with antibiotics. Call your doctor right away if you or your child have itching; trouble breathing or swallowing; or any swelling of your hands, face, or mouth while you or your child are using this medicine. Serious stomach conditions may occur while taking this medicine alone or together with antibiotics. Stop using this medicine and check with your doctor immediately if you or your child are having more than one of these symptoms: abdominal or stomach cramps, bloated feeling, watery and severe diarrhea which may also be bloody sometimes, fever, nausea or vomiting, or unusual tiredness or weakness. This medicine may increase your risk of having fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine. This is more likely if you are 50 years of age and older, if you receive high doses of this medicine, or use it for one year or more. This medicine may cause hypomagnesemia (low magnesium in the blood). This is more likely to occur if you are taking this medicine for more than one year, or if you are taking this medicine together with digoxin (Lanoxin®) or certain diuretics or "water pills". Stop using this medicine and check with your doctor right away if you have convulsions (seizures); fast, racing, or uneven heartbeat; muscle spasms (tetany); tremors; or unusual tiredness or weakness. Do not stop taking this medicine without first checking with your doctor, or unless told to do so by your doctor. Do not take other medicines unless they have been discussed with your doctor. This includes prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicines and herbal or vitamin supplements.

Cricopharyngeal Spasm: A Troubling Feeling of a Lump in the Throat

05:51
In this video, Dr. Robert Bastian of Bastian Voice Institute explains cricopharyngeal spasm, a problem that causes a troubling sensation of throat constriction or of a foreign body in the throat. Cricopharyngeal spasm is caused by over-contraction of the upper esophageal sphincter, or cricopharyngeus muscle, and causes an annoying, preoccupying, even anxiety-provoking sensation of something stuck in the throat, like a "wad of phlegm." A common description is "There is something in my throat that I can't swallow or spit out." Individuals with this problem often have difficulty getting a clear diagnosis, and may see several physicians and undergo unnecessary and unhelpful tests in their quest for an answer. Sometimes also called "globus sensation," this disorder is described and explained in detail. Say Goodbye to Heartburn With These 3 Natural Remedies

03:28
► Say Goodbye to Heartburn With These 3 Natural Remedies Heartburn is related to acid reflux, which is also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. These digestive issues are sometimes referred to as “indigestion.” But what causes heartburn and acid reflux? Lifestyle habits and diet, mostly. They commonly produce various yet temporary but often painful, symptoms. The most common times one experience acid reflux or heartburn symptoms occur at night, after consumng a large meal, during movement such as lifting or bending, or when laying down flat on your back. Common Heartburn Symptoms: • Bitter and sour tastes in your mouth. • Burping, belching and feeling nauseous or symptoms of dyspepsia. • General discomfort below the breast bone or in the upper abdomen. • Pain and burning sensations in the chest. • Pain that seems to move up from your stomach at first, and can reach as far up as the throat. • Regurgitation or having the sensation of acid backing up into your mouth or throat. • Stomachaches shortly after eating, or the feeling like stomach acid is “churning”. • The feeling of being overly full. Natural Remedies for Heartburn: 1. Apple Cider Vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is one of the most common and effective home remedies for acid reflux. It helps in digestion and to balance acid production in the stomach. Materials: 1-2 tsp organic raw apple cider vinegar. Warm water. Directions: Combine 1 to 2 teaspoons of organic raw apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water. Drink it 20 to 30 minutes before meals. Do this on a regular basis, at least for a few months. 2. Chew Gum. The Journal of Dental Research conducted a research that showed individuals with symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or chronic heartburn, experienced relief when they chewed on a piece of sugar-free gum for at least 30 minutes after a meal. This is because chewing gum can increase the flow of saliva and stimulate the salivary glands. Any acid that has built up in the gut is washed away and diluted or cleared out more quickly. The clearance of acid can help improve the symptoms of GERD. This could be applied to occasional heartburn as well. It is your saliva that actually makes normal bouts of reflux completely painless. Material: 1 piece Sugar-free gum. Directions: After a meal, chew a piece of gum for at least 30 minutes to help fight off heartburn. 3. Lemon Juice. Lemon juice contains a pH of around 2, making it an acid that is stronger than vinegar. Also, it contains an added boost with lots of nutrients, especially vitamin C. Therefore, not only can it help with heartburn, but it contains more nutrients as compared with apple cider vinegar. Material: 1 organic lemon. ¼ cup Water. Directions: Juice 1 organic lemon into a glass. If you can drink the lemon juice straight drink it. Otherwise, add ¼ cup of water and drink it. 👉🏿 Please leave a like if you enjoyed and tell me what you think in the comments! 👉🏿 Don't forget to subscribe my channel to help us reach to 10.000 Subscribers : https://goo.gl/29sHF2 Hi, I hope you like this video on my channel - Healthy2Life, if you did, please leave a Like and Subscribe to my channel ❤ Thank you all ;)

Heartburn Pills Damage Your Heart, Kidneys and Bones…Here’s What You Can Do To Fix This

06:37
Heartburn Pills Damage Your Heart, Kidneys and Bones…Here’s What You Can Do To Fix This According to the latest statistics, heartburn is one of the most common digestive disorders in the United States. The experts warn that you should be very careful, because if it’s left untreated, acid reflux can cause irritation and damage to the oesophagus, lungs, vocal cords and throat as well as cause pneumonia, ulcers, and breathing problems. This condition can quickly become unmanageable as sufferers have trouble going about their daily lives because of chest pain experienced after meals and throughout the night. UNFORTUNATELY, more than 15 million Americans currently rely on prescription heartburn medication to manage their symptoms. Proton pump inhibitors, the main medication prescribed for the condition, are currently the most widely prescribed drugs in the world. The MILLION-DOLLAR question – how does heartburn medication work? First of all, you should know that there are many different types of heart medications on the market shelves today. And, some of them, like tums and pesto-bismol, are available over-the-counters. And others, like Prilosec, Prevacid and Nexium, can only be taken through a prescription. Heartburn “appears” when stomach acid backs up into the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. Prescripion proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) reduce the production of acid in the stomach. This makes any stomach juice that may reach the esophagus less irritating. Ladies and gentlemen, this is very important for you to remember – these drugs are not a quick fix. They can have devastating side-effects and multiple studies have shown that 70% of patients taking them don’t actually need them. Here are just a few risks associated with this medication. Kidneys Disease A recent study, conducted by group of experts at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health, has analyzed two sets of data representing more than 250,000 people in an attempt to find a link between PPI use and kidney problems. The experts found that regular users of PPIs were 13% more likely to develop chronic kidney disease than acid reflux sufferers that do not take the medication. Other studies have found that PPI use makes patients 20%-50% higher risk of chronic kidney disease. The condition is known to cause toxic overload, fluid retention and central nervous system damage. Heart Disease Study, conducted by scientists at the Stanford University in California, has found that people with gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) who took PPIs had a 16 % risk of heart attack. They were also twice as likely to die from cardiovascular problems. Another study has found that the drug may lead to cardiovascular problems. The findings show that proton-pump inhibitors may not only lower stomach acid, they may also affect the health of the blood vessel itself. This is mostly because of the reduced levels of nitric oxide, a chemical which is produced to protect and relax blood vessels. This can lead to an increased risk of heart attack. According to Dr. John Cooke, chair of cardiovascular sciences at the Houston Methodist Research Institute, PPI users are 16- 21% more likely to suffer a heart attack over a 17-year period than chronic acid reflux suffers who were not taking the medication. Fracture Risk You should also know that the FDA has issued warnings about the increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures associated to PPI use. PPI use of at least 7 years was shown to make patient two times more likely to suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture. The experts also warn that 5 years of regular use was associated with an increase risk of hip fractures. Other affected areas included the wrist and spine. Nutrient Malabsorption We all know that the stomach acid is important for the body to absorb vitamin B12 and magnesium. Other nutritional deficiencies caused by the drug include calcium and iron. This can lead to: -Seizures -Arrhythmias -Muscle spasms -Anemia -Nerve damage -Psychiatric problems -Dementia NOTE: acid reflux medication can cause these problems within the first year of use. Unfortunately, supplements cannot remedy these deficiencies as long as the drugs are still being taken. And, one last thing – PPIs have also been linked to pneumonia and Clostridium difficile infection and PPI therapy has led to an increase in hospital mortality in about 90% of patients. How to Manage Acid Reflux NOTE: PPI prescription is an inappropriate treatment for most patients. They claim that all sufferers MUST start by changing their diet, stop smoking or reduce their alcohol consumption. -People, stomach acid plays an important role in breaking down food and absorbing nutrients, and also kills bacteria and microbes. And, long-term maintenance use of acid-suppressing drugs

Get Rid of Heartburn and Acid Reflux With this 8 Homemade Remedies

06:39
How to Get Rid of Heartburn and Acid Reflux Acid reflux, Heartburn or constipation is something that most adults will experience during their lifetime. It is characterized by an uncomfortable burning sensation right behind the breastbone that often times creeps up the throat, and is a symptom more so than a disease. It is caused by acid reflux, which occurs when the ring of muscle that allows food into your stomach relaxes when it shouldn’t. The result is acid from your stomach goes back up your esophagus, which then causes the sensation of heartburn. Think about it…its acid burning your throat…ouch! It’s actually possible to have reflux without heartburn, but it is not possible to have heartburn without-reflux. While over-the-counter and prescription medications are available, if you suffer only from occasional heartburn, lifestyle changes and heartburn home remedies may be the route you want to take. 1.A spoonful of baking soda… A spoonful of sodium bicarbonate, or teaspoon-full to be exact, can help put an end to the gnawing, burning, sensation of heartburn caused by acid reflux. Baking-soda, as sodium-bicarbonate is more commonly known, can help your reflux and in turn help your heartburn because it is a base substance. It has a pH-higher than 7.0, and therefore neutralizes stomach acid You will need… -1/2 teaspoon or 1 teaspoon of baking soda -a glass of fresh water Directions Mix either a ½ teaspoon or 1 single teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water that is no more than 8-ounces. Give it a good stir and drink all of the mixture. You can repeat this as needed but should not exceed seven ½ teaspoon doses in a 24-hour period. Also, avoid using this as a remedy for more than a week straight, as it is high in salt and can have side effects such as swelling or nausea 2.Chin up (and don’t lie down) Heartburn tends to get worse at night, thanks to the fact that you’re lying down when you sleep. Gravity works against you, and it’s easier for the digested contents of your stomach to back up into your esophagus, along with acid. Try elevating your head about 6 inches when you sleep by placing bricks, books, or blocks under the legs at the head of your bed. You could also try a wedge-shaped pillow under your mattress, but don’t simply pile up extra pillows as it’s easy to slip off of them at night. Don’t lie down within 2-3 hours after eating, because lying down with a full stomach makes stomach contents press harder against your lower esophageal-sphincter. 3.  Avoid tight fitting clothes Things cinched tightly about your waist or middle can worsen heartburn. If you have super tight-jeans on, when you sit down, the waistband is going to sink into your abdomen region. Same goes for tight belts-and even shirts can be a problem for some. This is because all of the above puts extra pressure on your lower esophageal-sphincter, which make it more likely stomach contents, will push through and you’ll experience reflux. 4.Chew gum The Journal of Dental Research conducted a study that showed people with symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, or chronic heartburn, experienced relief when they chewed a piece of sugar-free gum for 30 minutes after a meal. This is because chewing gum stimulates the salivary glands, and increases the flow of saliva. Any acid that has built up in the gut is diluted and washed away or cleared out more quickly. The clearance of acid then improves the symptoms of GERD. It is possible that the same school of thought could be applied to occasional heartburn as well. It’s our regular saliva that we swallow that actually makes normal bouts of reflux here and there completely painless. could not write the entire description of the video 8 Home Remedies To Cure Acid reflux | Heartburn | Gerd | Acidity as youtube has 5k words limit.you can pause the video should you require written content. How Can I Get Off Prilosec?

10:03
What is Prilosec? Prilosec, "the purple pill," helps with gastroesophageal reflux disease (or GERD). Now .. what is that? Reflux, what is otherwise known as heartburn, is when the acid from the stomach goes back up the esophagus and causes burning in the chest. Prilosec decreases the amount of acid in the stomach so that you don't have as much acid that can go back up the esophagus causing that heartburn. There are definitely other ways you can manage reflux, so that you don't need to be on Prilosec. The first way is to look at what types of foods you are eating and how you are eating. The foods that worsen reflux are fatty foods, greasy foods, and foods that have a lot of caffeine like coffee, black tea, and dark chocolate. You have a muscle at the end of the esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter that keeps food in the stomach; keeps it closed. If that muscle relaxes, then the food can go back up into the esophagus and these fatty foods, the high carbohydrate meals, caffeine, alcohol, smoking all relax that the lower esophageal sphincter allowing acid to go back into the esophagus. Another reason why people can have reflux is because they have a hiatal hernia. That is when part of the stomach actually protrudes back up into the esophagus and then the acid also goes backup into the esophagus. So now that you know why some people get reflux, then we find ways to prevent reflux. The first is simply avoid the causes and triggers. When we reduce the amount of fatty foods, the caffeine, alcohol and when we stop smoking (which has a whole other section of benefits), then we help to maintain the tone of the muscle that keeps the food in the stomach after it passes the esophagus. If you eat too large of a meal and the food just sits there and doesn't get digested the way that it's supposed to, it can push back up and cause heartburn. So eat smaller, more frequent meals. Thinking about the types of food you are eating, if you are used to eating foods that are easily digestible, then throw something in the mix that is NOT, then you might throw a shock into the system. Again, you will have food sitting in the stomach undigested and it will push back into the esophagus creating more acid in the stomach and causing heartburn. There are also things that create just an influx of acid production. One of the biggest things is stress. Stress causes an increase in acid and it doesn't matter if it's physical stress or emotional/mental stress. If the body of overly stressed, it will produce too much acid which will go up the esophagus and cause heartburn. So some of the things that you might want to do in terms of relegating this reflux are eating the smaller, more frequent meals. You can also add some supplements that will help further the digestion. The biggest recommendation I make - probiotics. Probiotics help to maintain the natural process of the stomach and intestines. When you have that good natural bacteria in the stomach and intestines, then foods can digested the way that they are supposed to be digested. Another thing you may consider taking is digestive enzymes. If you don't want to take the digestive enzymes as a pill, you would look at foods like papaya or pineapple. Then there is ginger and pepper mint. You have to be careful with peppermint because by nature, peppermint relaxes the muscles and it could relax the lower esophageal sphincter and cause heartburn .. but on the same token, peppermint is also good for facilitating digestion. So monitor the amount of peppermint, or combine it with ginger so that you get the increase effects of digestion of the ginger and the peppermint and minimizing the reflux. Here's a little recipe for you! Acid Reflux Tea: 1/4 tsp of baking soda 2 Tbsp of aloe 1 Tbsp of honey 1/8 Tbsp of virgin coconut oil 4 oz of warm water Not only does it neutralizes the acid in the stomach, but the aloe vera helps heal the stomach lining, the coconut oil helps to decrease the inflammation, and the honey gives it a sweet flavor while coating the stomach as well. Drink this every night for 30 days and it will re-balance the acid system in the stomach. Another recipe? 1 part fennel seeds 1 part flax seeds 1 part fenugreek seeds 1 part spearmint leaves Add that to a tea and drink that on a daily basis. Fennel and fenugreek are very good for digestion, as well as spearmint. Flax seed provides the fiber that digests the foods and keeps it down. Finally, you want to eat foods that are rich in celery, potatoes (red potatoes, particularly) and cabbage. This soothes gastric inflammation, which can also increase the level of reflux or the feeling of heartburn.

Acid Reflux Jaw Pain

00:57
Acid Reflux Jaw Pain http://acidreflux.product-truths.com - Acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are closely related, however the terms aren't necessarily interchangeable. Acid reflux may be the backward flow of stomach acid in to the esophagus - the tube that connects the throat and stomach. Acid reflux is additional especially known as gastroesophageal reflux. Throughout an episode of acid reflux, you could possibly taste regurgitated food or sour liquid in the back of one's mouth or feel a burning sensation in your chest (heartburn). Often acid reflux progresses to GERD, a a lot more serious form of reflux. Probably the most common symptom of GERD is frequent heartburn. Other signs and symptoms may perhaps incorporate regurgitation of food or sour liquid, difficulty swallowing, coughing, wheezing and chest pain - specially when lying down at night. Should you have occasional acid reflux, life style adjustments might help. Drop excess weight, eat smaller meals, and prevent foods that look to trigger heartburn - like fried or fatty foods, chocolate and peppermint. Avoiding alcohol and nicotine may enable, as well. If vital, occasional acid reflux may be treated with over-the-counter medication, such as: - Antacids, such as Tums - H-2-receptor blockers, which include cimetidine (Tagamet HB) or famotidine (Pepcid AC) - Proton pump inhibitors, which include omeprazole (Prilosec OTC) Should you suspect that you just have GERD, your signs and symptoms worsen, or youexpertise nausea, vomiting or difficulty swallowing, speak to your doctor. Prescription medications could enable. Within a handful of cases, GERD may possibly be treated with surgery or other procedures.

The continuous shoulder pain is where the individual don’t raise the hands fully in hyper extension. These are the common symptoms where they develop the stiffness. Patient with diabetic, if he does nth do the exercise properly will develop a condition called as the periarthritic condition. He will have a continuous shoulder pain to prevent if the shoulder joint movement is not proper, then he may develop a condition called as the frozen shoulder. The other thing is gastritis. these conditions, they will face the shudder If the shoulder pain is on the left side and if it penetrates to the front, then it is better to have a consultation with a cardiologist ,and get an ECG done or any other management by the cardiologist. Another treatment done is .My advice is to do the regular exercises. Whoever wants to exercise regularly and who doesn’t want their hand above the shoulder level, these kind of exercises prevent the shoulder pain and if there is a pain when they have a pain on the right or the left shoulder, try to avoid lying down on that position for few days. Continue with the exercise or consult any physiotherapist to get a regular set of exercises to reduce the pain in the shoulder.
Treat and Stop Acid Reflux with Natural Medicine - Dr. Patti Kim, ND

Low stomach acid causes most Acid Reflux symptoms, according to Dr. Patti Kim, ND (Naturopathic Doctor). In this video interview, Dr. Kim discusses: 1) The symptoms of Acid Reflux, including burning, heat or pain sensation in chest and/or throat area, regurgitation, belching due to the sphincter being weakened, feeling full sooner than normal, chronic sore throats or laryngitis. 2) The conventional treatment for Acid Reflux, including calcium carbonate antacids such as Tums, Maalox, Mylanta; or proton pump inhibitors such as Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid and Protonix. 3) That neutralizing stomach acid or stopping stomach acid production with artificial drugs can be harmful to the body because of the numerous side effects associated with the drugs, and that this type of conventional symptom treatment does not treat the root cause. 4) That stress is a primary cause of lowering stomach acid. 5) That stomach acids leak into the esophagus because of a weak sphincter (often due to stress). 6) Factors that influence acid reflux: poor nutrition, foods that cause inflammation, eating spicy foods and alcohol. 7) Natural Medicine treatment of acid reflux includes: stomach pH may be tested; goal is to raise stomach acid (or lower if too high) through dietary changes, exercise, herbs, nutritional supplements, digestive supplements and Homeopathic remedies. 8) Especially important is removal of processed foods and eating whole, organic foods. 9) Dr. Kim has a great success rate of stopping acid reflux: most of her patients are symptom free within a week. Choices Matter | Health Tip #3: How to Cure Acid Reflux

08:02
Link to my blog post about acid reflux: http://healthyfuturestoday.com/2015/10/25/acid-reflux/ Here are some of my go to solutions for acid reflux: 1) Slow Down and Chew. The average American chews each bite of food only a few times before swallowing it down hard, often with a gulp of water as a chaser. Try to chew your food until it’s liquid. This significantly reduces the work of your stomach. I know this seems simple, but sometimes the simplest remedies have the most profound effects. Just by chewing your food 20-30 times per bite and not drinking much liquid with meals (see below), you may resolve your acid reflux. 2) Drink as little liquid as possible with your meals. Ingrained in our dining culture is the practice of drinking beverages with our meals. But this habit is actually causing us harm. When we drink a lot of water or other beverages during meals, we are diluting our stomach acid. This makes it less potent, leading to belching, bloating, and acid reflux. Ideally we should hydrate 20 – 30 minutes before a meal and wait 1 ½ to 2 hours after a meal to drink. In between meals is by far the best time to hydrate. Have only a small glass handy during meals to help clear your palate (e.g. 4 oz). 3) Eat less at one time. Sometimes our LES gets blown open by the sheer volume of food we try to cram into our bellies. This is especially true when we eat at restaurants. Yes, the stomach will stretch, but only so far. Try to stop eating when you are 80% full. You have to leave room (literally) for digestion to take place. 4) Fix magnesium deficiency. This is a widespread issue in the US. The USDA estimates up to 90% of Americans don’t get enough magnesium. Low magnesium can cause your muscles to be too tight or to spasm erratically. This includes the LES. If you also struggle with any regular constipation, headaches, irritability, or tight muscles, try taking a magnesium supplement (start with 400mg magnesium citrate). 5) Stop eating foods that cause your LES to spasm. So here’s the solution to acid reflux that you didn’t want to hear. Unfortunately, we tend to love the foods that are most irritating to the LES. I know it’s hard to give up some of the foods we love, but continuing to eat them and just pop a pill to ignore the pain is likely to turn into a serious illness or disease some day. The most powerful food triggers include: cooked tomato sauce, citrus juices, coffee, soda, alcohol (especially wine), peppery or spicy foods, fried food, chocolate, and things with mint in them (e.g. gum, mints, toothpaste, tea). 6) Don’t eat or drink anything 2-3 hours before bedtime. Reflux can often be worst at night. This is when all of our muscles relax at least a little bit, including our LES. If you put food in your stomach and then go to bed before it’s fully digested, reflux is much more likely. The goal is to eat throughout the day such that you just go to bed with an empty stomach – but not hungry. Not eating a full 3 hours before bed is also an excellent way to improve the quality of your sleep. 7) Experiment with acid replacement. If you suspect that low stomach acid is the cause of your reflux, try taking 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in the middle of a meal (mixed in 1 -2 oz. of water). The idea is to put something more acidic into the stomach at the right time. And finally, a few words about acid reflux medications. Antacid medications such as Tums are only treating the symptoms – they do nothing to remedy the root cause. And long-term use makes acid reflux worse. If you’re taking a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) such as Prilosec or Nexium for your acid reflux, it’s important for you to be aware that long-term use of PPI medications (more than a couple of months at the most) is dangerous! PPIs act by reducing the body’s production of acid (remember acid reflux is often a result of too little stomach acid, not too much!). PPIs prevent the absorption of critical protein and minerals that, over years, can be the true root cause of ailments such as osteoporosis, arthritis, depression, heart disease, and diabetes. If you are taking a PPI and want to stop, do not stop cold turkey; that can actually do more harm than good. Slowly wean off the medication over a month’s time.

https://www.instagram.com/marcuswolford/ https://twitter.com/mvmntcoach Believe it or not, I have almost deleted this video, but have left it up, please read... My main services are as a Strength & Conditioning Coach as well as Diet Consultant for Fat Loss, Muscle Mass & Exercise Optimization. Keep in mind that this video is a summary of just one common cause. * On this point I want to make it clear that I am not even necessarily recommending a Low Carb Diet, for many people, its specific kinds of carbs that cause an issue, hence the SCDiet or for a lot of people eliminating high FODMAP foods is the best first step. * Whatever you choose, please consult a healthcare professional, and please do not contact me asking whether you should have a surgery or not. I am not a medical doctor, I am just some dude who made a neat video many years ago after doing some research. I am not a miracle worker nor am I a health-care wanna be Doctor practitioner thingymadoo. I am also not implying that there are no other effective treatments, nor that carbohydrate fermentation is the ONLY cause of GERD. Happy you liked my video....again, please consult a professional, not a random dude on youtube ;)

Episode #6: Dr. Steven Sandberg-Lewis Shows Us How to Overcome Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) Download the show notes and learn more about Dr. Steven Sandberg-Lewis here http://highintensityhealth.com/SIBO ➢Check out Dr. Sandberg-Lewis's book: http://ncnm-press.com/product/functional-gastroenterology -----------------------------------------Lets Connect-------------------------------------- ➢ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MikeMutzelMS ➢ Listen to the Audio in iTunes: http://highintensityhealth.com/itunes ➢ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/metabolic_mike --------------------------------------Key Takeaways---------------------------------- 07:18 Functional GI Disorders: A group meets in Rome, Italy every 10 to 15 years to determine “The Rome Criteria for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders”. There are about 36 functional gastrointestinal disorders that have diagnostic criteria. Each part of the GI tract can have dysfunction. Pathologies, true diseases, will show in blood testing, biopsies or scope exams. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is the most common functional GI disorder. Most physicians do not know how to deal with functional gastrointestinal disorders, so Dr. Sandberg-Lewis wrote a text book for physicians and created the center. In the general population, he believes that 10 to 15% of our population has IBS. 10:58 Bacterial Imbalances in the Small Intestine: SIBO stands for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. One study determined that 84% of patients with IBS have IBS because if SIBO. They do not have an infection. They have an overgrowth of the normal flora. The small intestine has a relatively small bacterial population. Symptoms typically are severe IBS symptoms: bloating of the abdomen, abdominal pain (could be severe), gas, gas that comes out as breath, heartburn, chronic nausea, inability to gain weight, muscle pain like fibromyalgia, headaches, joint pain, cramping pain and either constipation or diarrhea, or an alternation between the two. 13:43 Causes of SIBO: Medications, such as proton pump inhibitors like Nexium, Prilosec, and other commonly prescribed drugs that inhibit acid production predispose us to SIBO. Normal levels of stomach acid, pancreatic enzymes and bile are essential to keep the growth of bacteria at normal levels. Opiate pain killers, like Vicodin, Tramadol and Oxycodone, decrease the cleansing of the small intestine by slowing it or nearly shutting it down, allowing bacteria to overgrow. Another trigger could be antibiotics, especially for extended periods. Alcohol abuse could also be a trigger. 15:38 Preventing Overgrowth: Ensure proper motility, where things move from mouth to anus (not the other direction) in a well-regulated manner. The proper secretions are needed also. The right type of saliva, stomach secretions, pancreatic secretions and gallbladder secretions. The valves of the GI tract should work properly, especially the ileocecal valve between the small intestine and the large intestine. If the ileocecal valve is not toned and operating properly, we can get ileo-reflux, which can allow billions or trillions of bacteria from the large bowel to enter the small bowel. 18:19 Improving Sphincter Health and Tone: Look for parasite overgrowth or food sensitivities, unresolved emotions, and dietary factors. Popcorn is like razorblades going through the ileocecal valve. 19:47 Foods That Inflame: Fiber helps to feed gut bacteria. In SIBO, however, the bacteria are in the wrong place. Low FODMAPS diet is low fermentable carbohydrate foods that tend not to feed the bacteria. Eventually we will want to feed the bacteria when we can get a balance. You cannot starve the bacteria, because they will eat the sugars in intestinal mucus, and when you are very ill, it can eat the mucosa. 22:29 Rebalancing the GI Tract: There are a few strategies involved in rebalancing the GI tract. Reduce the bacteria’s food and, one could use prescription non-absorbable antibiotics like Surfaxin, Neomycin, or the absorbable antibiotic Metronidazole. Another option is to use a natural route and use berberine herbs, like golden seal or Oregon grape. There are different gasses produced by the different organisms and the ones that produce hydrogen, respond well to that. They also use extracts of garlic, the allicin extract, neem, an irevadic herb, maybe some oregano, and maybe enterically coated peppermint, that has the additional effect of being an excellent anti-spasmodic for the bowel. A study from John’s Hopkins reported that herbal combinations were more effective than Rifaximin. You never really know what will work for an individual patient. The SIBO breath test measures gasses, not which bacteria are making them. They also do not know which herb works best on which bacteria. In addition, the small intestine is 16 feet long and a scope can enter the first few inches.

5 Foods You Should Not Eat If You Have Heartburn and Acid Reflux

03:59
5 FOODS YOU SHOULD NOT EAT IF YOU HAVE HEARTBURN AND ACID REFLUX 1. CHOCOLATE If you like to eat chocolates and often suffer from heartburn, it’s time to say no to one of your favorite sweets. Chocolate is bad for people suffering from acid reflux for three reasons. First, it contains caffeine and other stimulants such as theobromine that cause reflux. Theobromine is a kind of methylxanthine that can keep the lower esophageal sphincter muscle hardened, thus directly increasing the chances of severe acid reflux. Second, it is high in fat, which means it takes longer to digest and can trigger reflux. 2. ALCOHOL Any type of alcoholic beverage can contribute to reflux. Alcohol can relax the valve in the lower esophagus, which in turn leads to reflux. It also stimulates the production of acid in the stomach and irritates the stomach and esophagus to make the condition worse. A 2004 study published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology found that heavy alcohol use – consuming 210 g or more alcohol per week – is one of the risk factors for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Later, a 2006 study published in Food and Drug Therapeutics reports that alcoholic beverages commonly consumed as wine and beer induce gastroesophageal reflux in GERD patients. 3. COFFEE If you enjoy drinking coffee all day, it’s time to switch to some herbal tea. Caffeine in coffee is bad for people who already suffer from acidity or acid reflex. It increases acidity in the stomach, causing acid reflux. Coffee also reduces pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter, which can cause or exacerbate acidity in susceptible individuals. In addition, coffee speeds up the gastric emptying process, which can help the highly acidic contents pass into the small intestine faster than normal. This can cause injury to the intestinal tissue. Along with coffee, you need to avoid foods and beverages that contain caffeine, such as tea, soda, and energy drinks. 4. TOMATOES Tomatoes and tomato based products are best to avoid if you suffer from heartburn or GERD. Tomatoes are rich in citric acid, malic acid and ascorbic acid that can irritate the stomach and esophagus. Tomatoes trigger acid reflux Once these acids are consumed, the stomach begins to produce too much gastric acid. This can creep up into the esophagus and cause an uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest. Avoid tomatoes as well as tomato-based products such as ketchup, pizza with tomato sauce, pasta sauce and chili sauce. 5. CARBONATED BEVERAGES Soda and other carbonated drinks also cause heartburn and acid reflux. First, carbonation bubbles expand inside the stomach, and increased bloating can cause reflux of stomach acids. Secondly, soda is highly acidic in nature. When you drink such drinks, the volume of stomach acid can rise much higher, thus worsening the condition. Try to limit your intake of any type of carbonated drinks to avoid acid reflux. Is it SAFE to Consume BAKING SODA to Improve Your HEALTH? SIDE EFFECTS of Drinking BAKING SODA Water

12:10
SIDE EFFECTS of Drinking BAKING SODA Water: Baking Soda Dos and Don’ts. Is there really a miracle product sitting in the back of your fridge -- something cheap that can zap bad smells, keep your teeth sparkly white, and even treat life-threatening diseases? Yes. That box of baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda (or sodium bicarbonate), can do some major things. Its superpowers come from a two-letter term: pH. That stands for “potential (or power) of hydrogen” to make something either an acid or a base (alkaline). Baking soda is an alkaline substance. When it mixes with an acid, it alters the pH level. That’s why it can quickly soothe an upset stomach or cover a bad smell. Baking Soda Dos You can use it to: Calm indigestion: Add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water to zap acid in your stomach. But acid doesn’t cause all kinds of indigestion, so if your symptoms don’t improve after 2 weeks, call your doctor. Don’t take baking soda within 2 hours of other medications. When the baking soda lowers stomach acid, it can slow the rate at which your body absorbs some medicines and change the way others work. Don’t give it to a child under 6 unless your pediatrician tells you to. Treat insect bites and stings: While it isn’t good for everyday use on your skin, it can soothe the redness, itching, and stinging that are signs of a mild reaction to an insect bite. Many over-the-counter creams contain baking soda. You can also make your own paste of one part baking soda to three parts water. This also works for poison ivy and rashes. Keep your mouth healthy: Brushing your teeth with toothpaste that has baking soda can hold off tooth decay and keep your gums and mouth in good shape. A half-teaspoon of baking soda mixed in a glass of water can also freshen your breath. Control odors: Most bad smells come from either strong acids (think sour milk) or bases (like spoiled fish). When you add baking soda and change the pH balance, the odors in your fridge or your carpet come into a neutral state. Try it for yourself. Put an open box of baking soda in your fridge. Sprinkle it over the layers of garbage in your trash can or toss it into the bottom of your dishwasher. CONTINUED Help chemotherapy work: While no scientific studies have found that baking soda cures cancer, research does show that it can help some cancer treatments work better. Some chemotherapy drugs need alkaline conditions. Others become more toxic in an acid environment. That’s why some doctors suggest using some form of sodium bicarbonate for best treatment results. Your oncologist can tell you if your drugs will get a boost from baking soda. Mouth and throat changes are common chemo side effects. If this happens to you, rinse your mouth three times daily with a mixture of 1 cup warm water, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/8 teaspoon salt, followed by a rinse with plain water. Treat kidney disease: A daily dose of sodium bicarbonate can help people whose kidneys can no longer remove enough acid from their blood. Baking Soda Don’ts Sometimes you should leave the box on the shelf. Here are some things baking soda won’t do. Soothe your skin: Your body’s largest organ is slightly acidic. This helps it hang on to moisture and keeps harmful bacteria out of your body. But if you have sensitive skin, you’re likely to find alkaline substances irritating. Style your hair: Some people skip shampoo and use a mixture of baking soda and apple cider vinegar on their hair. Over time this will make a bad hair day worse. Like your scalp, your hair is naturally acidic. Baking soda might shine your locks up at first, but over time it’ll cause frizz, tangles, and breaks. Boost athletic performance: You might hear about runners drinking a large amount of baking soda before a race or meet. This is called soda loading, and it can make you sick if you get too much too often.
