After meeting top physicians across the country, Canales became educated about the anticancer lifestyle and learned that his own cancer, currently under active surveillance, could have been prevented. That galvanized Canales into awareness -- and action. He quickly launched the non-profit Blue Cure Foundation, which educates and empowers all men "but especially a younger generation." Canales wrote in the Huffington Post Prostate Cancer Prevention Begins When Men Are Boys and has led a clarion call that the conversation must change with a greater focus on prevention. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Musician Michael Morales reflects on the love he has for his work as a volunteer drum circle leader in the BOLD Program (Bronx Oncology Living Daily). The BOLD Program is a free wellness and support program that was launched in 2008 at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System to meet the needs of those affected by cancer and their families, regardless of where they received treatment. The program includes workshops such as yoga, crochet, drum circle, Reiki healing, meditation, Aikido, and a walking group. There are also weekly counseling and support groups, and peer counseling through the volunteer-based BOLD Buddy Program. The program is offered for both English and Spanish speakers. Weill Cornell has a very broad portfolio of clinical trials. I was on borrowed time. I was really on borrowed time. I met Dr. Furman and he said to me, "You are a candidate for one of the trials. It's worked with a lot of other patients that I have." Getting from the time that he gave me the trial to being, I'd say, about 90% back to normal took maybe another two months. But it was completely different. At least, my life was given back to me. Otherwise, it would have been over. Center for Healthy Sex presents a lecture by Dan Lacovara, MFT: "Bearing Witness: Therapeutic Support for the Coming Out Process" "The Sex Experts" is a monthly professional lectures series for sex therapists and specialists to workshop and refine new material that they've been working with in an informal setting before their peers. Any particular statements expressed herein represent the views of the presenter(s) only, but not necessarily the perspective of Center for Healthy Sex (CHS). With this lecture series, CHS intends to explore important issues and encourage conversation within the therapeutic community, as well as provide a platform to emerging voices. Lecture Description: When individuals come out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, they are making a courageous step in the process of self-acceptance. The process is different for everyone. Some may be filled with excitement, while others may experience a combination of shame and fear. As therapists, we have the remarkable opportunity to bear witness to this process. In this lecture, we will discuss the various challenges, opportunities and approaches to taking this journey with our clients. Learning Objectives: • Participants will understand and learn how to avoid common clinical missteps in facilitating a client's coming out process. • Participants will have a greater understanding of the role that trauma and internalized homophobia play in the coming out process. Presenter Bio: Daniel Lacovara, MFT is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice, and a staff clinical consultant at CHS. He has worked extensively with individuals, couples and families dealing with the coming out process. Daniel trained at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, where he worked with LGBTQ clients. In addition, he designed the curriculum for and co-facilitated the Center's first Sexual Compulsives Group for men. He has participated in numerous trainings for both group and individual treatment, including psychodynamic and relational work in group therapy, sex and love addiction, and the impact of depression on intimate relationships. He has also received advanced training in attachment theory and Bowenian approaches to individual and couples treatment at the Bowen Institute in San Diego. Prior to his clinical work, Dan worked in the field of marketing and communication, and staff development at City of Hope, a designated Comprehensive Cancer Center located in Duarte, California. He previously held the position of Administrative Director for Change Management at the Mount Carmel Guild Behavioral Services (MCGBS), a seventeen-site mental health clinic in Newark, New Jersey. There, he worked with clinical and administrative leadership helping the organization to achieve first-time accreditation by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Dan graduated with a masters of arts in clinical psychology from Antioch University, and received his undergraduate degree in English Literature from Georgetown University. MFT 92436 Center for Healthy Sex (CHS) is a community therapy center in Los Angeles that specializes in the treatment of sexual dysfunction, sexual anorexia, porn addiction, sex addiction, and love addiction. Clients participate in the diverse programs, online courses and social services offered at Center for Healthy Sex - ranging from weekly support groups, couples sex therapy, and the 11-day Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to online classes, free lectures and podcasts.
