Cancer patient turns to support groups for strength

"By sharing our hopes, our fears and everything in between, we're calmer and less stressed about our cancer. Releasing that stress in a positive manner lets our body use its energy elsewhere. The result is we're helping ourselves become stronger and better prepared to move forward in our cancer battle." Machine Learning with Scikit-Learn - The Cancer Dataset - 32 - The Decision Function

I will use ipython (Jupyter) and the code will be available on github. We use the recently trained SVM on the cancer dataset (that we built over the previous few videos) to inspect the decision function, in detail (the raw values) and more abstractly (using Boolean interrogations). This helps us better understand how our algorithm 'makes' decisions. Trans veteran finds support, strength and a new path

01:35
Brittyn Calyx (conservation and environmental science) had to withdraw from school because of a hospitalization and depression. She found some purpose in joining the Wisconsin Army National Guard and returning to UWM. Eventually, she came out as trans and was discharged from the military under “don’t ask, don’t tell.” She felt alone and isolated, but UWM’s LGBT Resource Center provided crucial support. A birding group at the Urban Ecology Center brought further solace, and pointed the way to a new path in life. Story Half Told Video

08:02
A Story Half Told is a campaign which looks at the extent of misconceptions around Metastatic Breast Cancer (mBC) he survey results reveal that 95 percent of women in Ireland believe that breast cancer can be cured if it’s caught and treated early1. However early detection does not help survival for metastatic breast cancer patients - average survival for women with metastatic breast cancer is 2-3 years.2 The first of its kind survey was commissioned by Pfizer as part of A Story Half Told campaign. The campaign was launched by Pfizer conjunction with Ireland’s leading cancer support groups Europa Donna Ireland, the Irish Cancer Society and the Marie Keating Foundation and aims to highlight the extent of misconceptions and misunderstandings surrounding the most advanced stage of breast cancer and the need to widen the conversation around breast cancer in Ireland to include metastatic breast cancer. Hope and support for people with traumatic brain injuries

03:08
"I enjoy gardening, and I'd rather not do it at my house," said Linn Hilderbrand, with a laugh. Hilderbrand and other volunteers spend several days each week working in the community garden near Salem Hospital's Regional Rehabilitation Center. They're also survivors of traumatic brain injury and taking part in horticultural therapy, which is designed to provide purpose, structure and a reward for their effort. "I personally have had a brain aneurism. I've had a brain tumor, brain cancer, and an infection in my brain. I've had to have three brain surgeries," said Hilderbrand. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury every year. The leading causes are falls and car accidents. "Some people can't talk. Some people are in wheelchairs. Some people are blind. Some people will never, ever wake up again. That's how damaging and severe the brain injuries are," said Hilderbrand. "People who've not had a brain injury really have no idea what's going on. You try to explain it to them ... they have no idea." But Hilderbrand found a common bond with a growing number of people who are part of the Salem Brain Injury Support Group. The group originally started more than 20 years ago, with the help of Salem Hospital therapists. Now, around 30 people gather every Friday at IKE Box Coffee Shop—plus meet monthly at Salem Hospital's Regional Rehabilitation Center. "They've developed really close friendships that I think some of them will last a lifetime," said Megan Snider, therapy aide and the group's facilitator. Snider says besides making friendships, another goal for the group is to become more independent—plus find comfort in knowing they're not alone. "I strongly encourage finding a support system. It's very, very important," said Snider. "They're not only helping themselves, but they're helping others too ... and everybody benefits. I feel they've made me a better person." "It's people who know what I'm going through," said Allison O'Grady, a traumatic brain injury survivor. O'Grady has been part of the group for 15 years. Her life changed forever in 1995. "I was getting ready to go rock climbing with my boyfriend up in Portland at Rocky Butte Quarry ... and I fell 60 feet instead," said O'Grady. "They had to take out a section of my skull over here on my right side, which gave me left side paralysis. I unfortunately had two and a half years of schooling at a university, lost all my schooling and forgot how to read." The support group plays a vital role for people dealing with the consequences of brain injury—and many have an innate need to be understood and accepted. Over the years, O'Grady decided to become active. She now does extensive volunteer work for several Salem area organizations. "I may have fallen off a cliff, but look at what else I've done with my life ... because there's a lot more to me than just having my accident," said O'Grady. "Your life has changed. Some things will never be the same," said Snider. "But you can grow from where you are ... and our group is a great, perfect example of that." "The wonder of this group and how it's so supportive for everybody who comes," said O'Grady. "These are my friends," said Hilderbrand. "That's as good as it gets, I guess." I will use ipython (Jupyter) and the code will be available on github. In my view, this is easier to understand compared to the decision function. The implementation is relatively easy: we're using the same support vector machine (SVC) classifier trained on the cancer dataset from previous tutorials for illustration purposes. Using it with the default parameters seems to lead to overfitting the (training) data and it also leads to a relatively poor performance on the test subset. We're gonna try to remediate this by looking into the scaling of the data and also into hyperparameters such as the C parameter and gamma. Heath’s Story: How art is helping his family heal after their painful loss (Full video)

04:08
Donate now: https://albertacancer.ca/donate/healing-arts#PC62485_351=YouTube We have the opportunity to support families across Alberta through their cancer journey. By giving them access to expressive art therapy, children and adults are better able to cope with their diagnoses, heal from treatment, and build resilience for the future. We have committed $300,000 to a Healing Arts program and need your support. This program within CancerControl Alberta relies solely on Alberta Cancer Foundation donor support to help as many patients and families as possible. Art therapists can be there throughout the journey—from diagnosis to end of life and after. Give today: https://albertacancer.ca/investment-priorities/healing-arts#yt Heath McCoy strongly believes in the healing power of art. In 2015, he had to do the unthinkable: tell his seven-year-old-daughter, Bronwyn, and four-year-old son, Finn, their mother had died. Tamara Gignac had been diagnosed with terminal colorectal cancer a year earlier and the family made one last trip to Mexico so she could fulfill her wish of feeling the sand under her feet and watch her children play in the waves. She deteriorated quickly on that trip and ended up being flown back to Calgary via air ambulance. Heath and his children were at Tamara’s bedside in her final moments to say goodbye, which he describes as the most traumatic part of their cancer experience. “I remember telling my daughter that this is the time we have to say goodbye to mommy and I remember she screamed and she kicked,” says Heath. “She had a physical reaction and I held her as tightly as I could and tried to take away her pain. I could feel her agony, I could feel her writhing in my arms. And I remember my son, he couldn’t grasp it as well, but he was crying and crying because he felt like he had done something wrong, to hurt his mom. It was really traumatic.” Thankfully, there are ways to help children and families through this physically and mentally traumatic time. Krista Marsden, provincial co-ordinator of Healing Arts says art therapists often hear from children who think they are to blame for a parent “going away.” “A cancer diagnosis and even more, the loss of a parent, can impact someone’s lifelong trajectory,” says Marsden. “The love story the dying parent and child share can be beautiful—art therapy can help children see everything that parent is doing or has done to live those extra days to hold them and to have those extra moments together. “It helps them not to see the blame but to see the love in that and set them up in their life to be resilient and healthy.” Heath and his children are rebuilding a new life together as a family of three and along the way, he has seen the benefi ts of art in his own children. It became a refuge from the intense emotions associated with their loss. He would watch them do something simple like draw, colour or write a poem that had nothing to do with their mother but before long, that peaceful, meditative time to refl ect would help feelings emerge. “I always tell them their mother is in their heart and it was remarkable to see how art would calm them down, bring them a little peace and help them feel closer to her. What better way for them to feel mommy in their hearts than when they’re in that artistic space, maybe writing a poem or painting a picture of her?” The demand for creative art therapy visits is steadily increasing. Last year, the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the Cross Cancer Institute saw almost 3,000 creative arts therapy visits, ranging from individual/family sessions to group-based workshops. Therapists also spend time in palliative care units in the cancer centres, facilitating activities that improve quality of life for cancer patients. During this time, patients and family members can create meaningful legacy art projects as well as share in creative activities in the time they have together. There are often waiting lists to see a therapist. The volume of group programs has also been limited. We are in urgent need of $300,000 so we don’t have to turn away patients or families. Together, we have the power to change lives. Be part of this $300,000 investment that will make life better for Albertans facing cancer by donating today: https://albertacancer.ca/investment-priorities/healing-arts#yt Your support will help improve the quality of life of patients which can have a positive impact on health outcomes. Your support can help families heal and build resilience. Thank you for making life better for Albertans facing cancer.

There are numerous parameters that we could tune in, but here we are solely focusing on the C parameter, which controls the complexity of our model. By default, C is set to 1, and with C=1 we are underfitting on the scaled data. We're increasing C to 1000 and we retrain the support vector machine on the cancer dataset. The performance of the algorithm increases significantly. Humorous Motivational Speaker - Healthcare, Hospice, Palliative Care and Cancer

01:26
For more information on Conor Cunneen: http://irishmanspeaks.com Providing palliative care, comfort and compassion is tough and draining work. More so, than any other healthcare or support group, hospice professionals do make a difference every day to patients and families coping with end of life illness. Sometimes it is difficult not to take the job home with you. Sometimes, you need a lift. Sometimes, you need a lift from a speaker who having survived two bouts of cancer appreciates the work that all healthcare professionals do. Sometimes, you need a lift from a humorous, motivational, hospice speaker who will have you learning and laughing. Conor Cunneen is an Irishman, happily exiled in Chicago, where he says pizza is good, the natives are friendly and he has been force-fed more corned beef than he ever had in Ireland. As a meeting or event planner, you can be sure that when Conor combines effective pre-event research with life lessons from Ireland, UK and USA, a natural gift for storytelling and the wit that won Chicago Humorous Speaker of the Year, you will your audience saying to you, "Well done for booking that humorous, inspirational speaker. You really do a good job. Thank you." Interesting Factoid. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization writes about the History of Hospice Care: The term "hospice" (from the same linguistic root as "hospitality") can be traced back to medieval times when it referred to a place of shelter and rest for weary or ill travelers on a long journey. The name was first applied to specialized care for dying patients by physician Dame Cicely Saunders, who began her work with the terminally ill in 1948 and eventually went on to create the first modern hospice—St. Christopher's Hospice—in a residential suburb of London. You may not be looking for an inspirational, hospice humorous speaker at this moment, but you may be interested in other information about the many wonderful organizations that provide support. Links of interest for anyone seeking information on hospice care and support include: http://www.nahc.org/haa/ The Hospice Association of America (HAA) is a national organization representing thousands of hospices, caregivers and volunteers who serve terminally ill patients and their families. http://www.nahc.org/ The National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) is a nonprofit organization that represents the nation's 33,000 home care and hospice organizations. NAHC also advocates for the more than two million nurses, therapists, aides and other caregivers employed by such organizations to provide in-home services to some 12 million Americans each year who are infirm, chronically ill, and disabled. http://www.aahpm.org/about/default/history.html American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine is the professional organization for physicians specializing in hospice and palliative medicine. The code:https://github.com/CristiVlad25/ml-sklearn/blob/master/Machine%20Learning%20with%20Scikit-Learn%20-%20The%20Cancer%20Dataset%20-%2029%20-%20SVMs%205.ipynb This machine learning video is all about data scaling. In scikit-learn you can simply do this in one or two lines of code, using the StandardScaler or the MinMaxScaler for example. We're not gonna do that thought; at least not for now. Instead, we're gonna scale the data by hand, which is also quite simple and straightforward; additionally, doing it by hand provides a better understanding of the whole process. As we can see, scaling the data leads to much better performance of our SVM classifier on the cancer dataset.
