Veggie's 3rd time this year, for a good cause! Hair For Hope 2011! Extracted from: http://www.hairforhope.org.sg/index.php?/home/sectionpage/2 Into its 9th consecutive year, Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF) is organizing Hair for Hope (HfH) on 23rd and 24th July 2011 (Saturday and Sunday), from 11 am to 7 pm (on Saturday) and 1pm to 6 pm (on Sunday) at VivoCity. Through this symbolic gesture, we aim to: 1. Create awareness of childhood cancer in Singapore. 2. Show children with cancer and their families that they are not alone in their fight against cancer. 3. Tell children with cancer that it is OK to be bald. 4. Raise funds to help children with cancer and their families. 5. Build a community of support for children with cancer and their families. HfH is the only head-shaving event in Singapore that serves to raise funds and awareness of childhood cancer. Every shaven head represents an understanding by an individual of the ordeals that a child with cancer is subjected to. This year, we hope to encourage at least 3,000 participants to join our cause, with a target to raise at least S$1.8 million to aid children with cancer and their families. All funds raised will contribute to the overall annual $3.5 million needed to continue providing critical programmes and services to assist our children with cancer and their families. In addition, a total of 20 satellite shaving events would be organized in the months of June to August 2011 in various corporate offices and schools of CCF's partners.

Our team, titled "Mission IFpossible", consists of three members from Hwa Chong Junior College and one from Hwa Chong Institution High School. The main purpose of the project is to support Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF), a non-profit organization based in Singapore, in their endeavour in improving the quality of lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer. Our project aims to raise social awareness of childhood cancer by reaching out to a wider group of public population, to involve the beneficiaries in a direct manner by organizing events and activities and, most importantly, to dedicate fund raised to our partnering VWO to further fulfill this social cause. Under the umbrella of "If I, Will You", a theme we adopted, a multi-pronged approach will be implemented in order to meet the goals. A national calligraphy competition will be jointly organized with Hwa Chong Calligraphy Club to promote awareness in the form of arts. We will conduct street sales, street busking and flash mob to encourage widespread supports from the general public. A "Charity Jukebox" will also be put in place in our hostel to reach out to student body. The outcome of the project is to pass on the spirit of love for children who get cancer, and to make the impossible possible IF we are able to push forwards every little piece of wholeheartedness. How Kids See Class Differences | Regardless Of Class | CNA Insider

"They think that we are quite stupid, so they seldom talk to us." How do students in Singapore from the Express, Normal Academic and Normal Technical streams perceive each other? And when does such class consciousness start? We found it could be as young as 9 years old. #RegardlessOfClass examines class difference - the issue that more than half of 1,036 respondents think is most likely to cause a social divide, according to a survey conducted by Channel NewsAsia. We're a nation built upon the ideals of meritocracy, equality, and justice. But a nationwide survey reveals that Singapore's sharpest social divisions are not based on race, language, or religion, but class. This new documentary Regardless of Class examines the invisible line that cuts through the heart of a maturing nation. In the next installment of the "Regardless of" series, Janil Puthucheary, the chairman of OnePeople.sg, goes on a journey to speak to people across the class spectrums. How deep is this class divide? And how can he bring the two sides together?

The CCLG approached me to adapt a children's book they created into an animation to make the story more widely available. I worked the CCLG team to adapt the book's story into an animation script and storyboard. After the storyboard was approved, I recreated the characters in Adobe illustrator and rigged them in After Effects where I then animated them.

Girls who shaved heads told to wear wigs - 02Aug2013

01:58
SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education (MOE) says it provides schools with a set of guidelines in the management of school discipline. These include the objectives of discipline and communication of school rules. But within this set of guidelines, schools may formulate their own rules based on their school's context and needs. The MOE was responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia about five girls from St Margaret's Secondary School who had their heads shaven in support of the Hair for Hope charity event last Saturday. Three of them had turned up in school bald, even though they had promised their principal to wear wigs, while the other two kept their promise. Cherry Wong and Leia Lai, both 15 years old, were among those who took part in last Saturday's event and turned up at school on Monday without wearing wigs. Rules at St Margaret's Secondary do not allow "punk, unfeminine or sloppy hairstyles". Leia's mother, Mdm Emily Chia, said the girls were suspended from almost two lessons and made to sit in the general office. Two other girls from the same school who took part in the event, said they were willing to wear wigs since it was what they had promised their principal. Pee Chloe said: "Why should we go back on our words when we already promised her that? Even if (you would get rashes if you wear wigs)...at least you must (show) an MC (medical certificate) before saying, we don't want to wear our wigs and stuff." Sumiko Choo said: "The thing is, the principal already stated that if you are willing to do it (shave the head), you have to wear a wig. She stated it very clearly. "But if you are not willing to wear a wig, you can do it after you graduate." Hair for Hope is an annual event organised by the Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF), which raises funds to help children and their families affected by childhood cancer. According to CCF, 16 schools had participated as satellite partners -- 12 of which had female students shaving their heads for the cause. However, St Margaret's Secondary was not one of the participating schools. Weighing in on the issue, parents and other students had mixed reactions. One parent said: "Personally I find it a bit silly. If you are already pushing for that project, to ask a kid to show support by shaving her head, then why do you want them to wear a wig? Is it something shameful? I don't think so." St Margaret's Secondary School student Masturah Bagum said: "...they not abiding by the rules and not wearing a wig...I don't think it is right to push the blame to the school and the principal." Meanwhile, CCF said that it is heartened by the bravery and compassion of the five girls who had their heads shaved in the event. It said a key message of Hair for Hope is to let children who lost their hair following cancer treatment know that it is alright to be bald. CCF added that every shaven head in Hair for Hope represents the understanding by an individual of the ordeal that a child with cancer goes through. It also said the schools that took part in its satellite events did not raise any concerns about their students being bald during school time. Leia's mother, Mdm Chia said she is surprised this topic has gone viral online. "I'm glad that it created the awareness that we wanted to create, although our intention was never to shame the school or to shame the principal. "I think I just wanted the girls to have the recognition they should have gotten instead of being reprimanded." www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/girls-who-shaved-heads/763998.html

Breakthrough in neuroblastoma and breast cancer research identifies new treatment targets A team of researchers have discovered a completely new pathway in which a cell protein causes two common forms of cancer, neuroblastoma and breast cancer. In neuroblastoma, the most common tumour of infants, and breast cancer, levels of the Myc proteins are commonly elevated in tumour cells. High levels of the protein are also associated with poor treatment outcomes. However, the way in which these proteins cause cancer has remained unknown. For the first time, researchers at Children's Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research (CCIA), and collaborators in Italy, describe how the Myc proteins lead to tumour formation. "Our results show that Myc proteins cause cancer by switching off genes involved in cancer prevention, such as transglutaminase 2 (TG2)," says Professor Glenn Marshall, Head of CCIA's Molecular Carcinogenesis Program and Director of the Centre for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders at Sydney Children's Hospital. "In addition to this, we have also shown that when the neuroblastoma and breast cancer cells are treated with a new class of anti-cancer drugs called histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs), they are able to turn the TG2 gene back on, which then inhibits tumour growth." The results which will be published this week in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA journal, describe in detail the complex interaction between the Myc protein, TG2 gene and HDACI drug within tumour cells. "This work highlights the importance of HDACIs for the treatment of cancers caused by the high levels of Myc proteins," says Professor Marshall. "More importantly, we identify TG2 as a potential drug development target for the treatment of these cancers. "We believe that TG2 mimetics, combined with HDACIs in cancer therapy, will have potent anticancer effects in cells driven by Myc proteins." -ends- This work was supported by funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council, Cancer Council New South Wales, Cancer Institute New South Wales, United States National Cancer Institute, University of New South Wales, Italian Association for Research on Cancer, Italian Ministry of University and Research, University of Bologna, and Regional Program for Industrial Research-ITT Emilia Romagna Region, Italy. Children's Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research is affiliated with the University of NSW and Sydney Children's Hospital. Note to editors The following manuscript will be published in the November issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA: Liu T, Tee AEL, Porro A, Smith SA, Dwarte T, Liu PY, Iraci N, Sekyere E, Haber M, Norris MD, Diolaiti D, Della Valle G, Perini G and Marshall GM (2007) "Activation of tissue transglutaminase trascription by histone deacetylase inhibition as a therapeutic approach for Myc oncogenesis". About CCIA Children's Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research (CCIA) is the only independent medical research institute in Australia devoted to research into the causes, better treatment, prevention and cure of childhood cancer. The vision of the Institute is to save the lives of all children with cancer and to eliminate their suffering, and its mission involves achieving this through world-class research. LIFE Before Death Pediatric Palliative Care

05:27
DVD OUT NOW http://www.lifebeforedeath.com "Pediatric Palliative Care" Short film 21 of 50 in the LIFE Before Death documentary series about the global crisis in untreated pain and the dramatic life changing effect palliative care services can deliver to patients and their families around the world. In this short film we discover that the barriers to pediatric palliative care are very complex and pain in children is often under treated. We learn that providing good care is crucial to the quality of life for the child but that support needs to extend to the whole family. "I think that in the pediatric population pain is more frequently under recognized and under treated than it is in the adult population, though the medications are available, sometimes the training for physicians is a little bit inadequate and physician's feel unsure in their ability and concerned about the medications," reflects Dr Kim Bower (USA). "You know I always say, if you think doctors are frightened about giving morphine to an adult, put a child or a baby in front of them and ask them for morphine and they go tearing out the door because you just don't do that," states Professor Joan Marston (South Africa). "Children can't raise their voices, they can't tell you how they're feeling, they can't tell you how much pain they've got." Professor Marston recounts the story of a young girl being denied morphine by a pharmacist who felt she must be an addict until he actually went to the girl's bedside to see for himself, only to realize how wrong he was. In Uganda we meet a Wasswa, a child being treated by Dr Henry Ddungu (Uganda) with oral morphine to treat his cancer pain. "We now believe and we know it that a child can have as much pain as an adult," explains Dr Ddungu. "And so they are given treatment accordingly. When we start them on morphine, we give it to them until the pain is controlled, we don't have a ceiling dose that; 'Oh my god a child can not get more than this'. We give it to them according to how much they need to control their pain with minimum side effects." Dr Bower goes on to explain the importance of community involvement in a child's palliative care - especially when it comes to the parents and siblings -- but also the family's church or spiritual community as well as the school the children attend. Dr Bower explains that for kids, their desires and what they look forward to and want to do may be different to that of adults in that children want to enjoy time with their family and do normal and fun things like go to amusement parks. "It's important that families are supported to make this possible." We meet Jessica, Hendra and Esther (Indonesia), a family who have relocated Singapore to access care for Jessica. Jareal Bantilan their hospice physiotherapist tells us that the family hopes to take Jessica home to Indonesia but to do so she needs to be able to sit up on the plane, at that time she was admitted she was largely bedridden. Bantilan explains; "At first I tried to limit the exercise because I was worried Jessica might not be able to handle too much. But she was very motivated and wanted to do more, they now have hopes she may even be able to walk." "I think I can now tell them that we have a new family in Singapore," reflects Hendra. "We came to Singapore a little family but I have met so many people here who care about us, in this place where we are so far from home, we make our home here also, that's joyful for us!" Featuring Dr Kim Bower (USA), Professor Joan Marston (South Africa), Dr Henry Ddungu (Uganda), Jareal Bantilan (Singapore), Jessica, Hendra & Esther (Indonesia). LIFE Before Death comprises 50 short films themed around pain control and end of life issues, releasing one a week for a year from May 2011. A feature film was released in early 2012 and is available at http://www.lifebeforedeath.com The project is presented by the Lien Foundation and produced by Moonshine Movies. It is also supported by The International Association for the Study of Pain, The Mayday Fund, The Union for International Cancer Control and The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice International Programs. http://www.lifebeforedeath.com

Breast Cancer Awareness Video

01:24
Music by: Speak Now (Acoustic Guitar Version) - Taylor Swift Instrumental Karaoke (PERFECT) This video is a part of CSR project for Fashion Communication 2 module. Different approach is being used to capture YOUR attention (using males to tell about breast cancer). Hope you like it! :) Some little research to be shared: According to (Singapore Cancer Society, 2013), cancer is the number one killer in Singapore. Approximately 1 out of 3 Singaporean dies of cancer. Although about 80 % of women with breast cancer noticed the symptoms themselves and consult for a doctor, it is still important to highlight and emphasize early checkups for breast cancers, making its way in achieving 99.9% awareness among the people (National Cancer Center of Singapore Pte Ltd, 2012) * Singapore Cancer Society. (2013). General Cancer Information. From Singapore Cancer Society: http://www.singaporecancersociety.org.sg/lac-gci-cancer-facts-n-figures.shtml * National Cancer Centre of Singapore Pte Ltd. (2012). The Stigma Of Depression

03:42
"When I was young, I always felt that I was worthless and I was useless. So I used to cut myself to punish myself because I felt like I wasn't good enough for my family, I wasn't good enough for my siblings. And I felt like that was the only way I had to cope with all the emotions that I had that I was just useless. When I shared about my depression to my classmates, they treated me really differently. They started seeing me as this frail, over-sensitive person. They were really scared of sharing anything with me, especially things that were slightly sad because they were scared that I would be affected by it. So it felt like there was a barrier between us when we were talking." Have a story to share? Let us know here: http://bit.ly/2lNf5G9

Biggmama's head shave for CCF Hair For Hope 2010 Singapore, Part 1

I apologise for the poor quality of this clip, it was taken impromptu by my cousin using a mobile phone. Though this is my 2nd time having my head shaved for the same cause but trust me, the feeling is juz as nervous as the 1st time in 2009. The hair length u ssee in here is actually grown out from the last shave, I didn't even had it trimmed! That's how precious I thought my locks were until this cause came out again and I thought, heck, why not again? The cancer strickened kids don't have a choice to keep they hair after chemotherapy, don't they? This is done for them and also to raise the awareness for cancer in children. As u can see, I were kinda freakin' out juz right b4 the shave, I were one of the last few shavees this year (not many people left on stage). I apologise for that few shrieking "me" moments b4 I got up the stage, and that rubberface was cos there were too much hair on my face and it was crazy ticklish! LOL Those u see with me are part of my loving family, cousin, niece, nephew, aunties and my uber sweet bestie, auntie Bel. Passing me tissue, holding on to my ultra heavy bag and taking pictures of me... aww! :))

Central Blood Bank Seeds of Hope Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Your blood donation can make a difference in the lives of children. Did you know that blood is made up of three components? Red Blood Cells, Platelets and Plasma Some cancer treatments cause a loss of platelets. These specialized blood cells help control blood clotting. When platelet levels fall too low, patients are given a transfusion of platelets to replenish their supply and prevent life-threatening hemorrhages.
