📱 RED ALERT! 11 Reasons Why Children under the Age of 12 Should Not Use Handheld Devices
Do you let your child play with your cell phone or your tablet? There are many reasons why children under the age of 12 shouldn’t use these devices. Technology has developed and enhanced our lives for many years, but do you know what these handheld devices are doing to your children? Children should have restricted access to handheld devices such as cellphones, tablets, etc. to avoid developmental consequences. Research indicates that technology is harming our children, yet many adults continue to support unrestricted use. These devices have increased infant, toddler, and child access and immersion into a viral world devoid of critical factors for development, behavior, and learning. Reasons to keep your children away from handheld devices 1. Rapid brain growth: When a child is between 0-2 years, the brain triples in size and continues in a state of rapid development to 21 years of age. Early brain development is determined by environmental stimuli or lack thereof. Stimulation for a developing brain caused by overexposure to technologies has shown to be associated with executive functioning and attention deficit, cognitive delays, impaired learning, increased impulsivity and decreased ability to self-regulate. 2. Delayed development: The technology we have come to know restricts movement for children, which can result in delayed development. 1 in 3 children enters school with being developmentally delayed, negatively impacting literacy and academic achievement. Movement enhances attention and learning abilities. When technology is used under the age of 12 it is detrimental to a child’s development and learning. 3. Epidemic obesity: Children who are allowed to have devices in their rooms have 30 percent increased risk of obesity. 1 in 4 Canadian children and 1 in 3 U.S. children are obese. 30 percent of children who are obese will develop diabetes, and obese individuals have a high risk of early stroke and heart attack, which shortens life expectancy. 21st century children may be the first generation to not outlive their parents. 4. Sleep deprivation: 60 percent of parents don’t watch their children’s technology usage, and 75 percent of children are allowed to use technology in their bedrooms. Those 75 percent of children aged 9-10 are sleep deprived to the extent that their grades are impacted. 5. Mental illness: When technology is overused it is implicated as a causal factor in rising rates of child depression, anxiety, attachment disorder, attention deficit, autism, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and problematic child behavior. 1 in 6 Canadian children has diagnosed mental illnesses. 6. Aggression: Violent media can cause child aggression. When young children are exposed to incidences of physical and sexual violence like “grand theft auto V” it portrays sex, murder, rape, torture, and mutilation, as do many TV shows. The U.S. categorized media violence as a Public Health Risk due to casual impact on child aggression. The media reports increased use of restraints and seclusion rooms with children who exhibit uncontrolled aggression. 7. Digital dementia: When high-speed media content can contribute to attention deficit, as well as decreased concentration and memory, due to the brain pruning neuronal tracks to the frontal cortex. Children who can’t pay attention, can’t learn. 8. Addictions: When parents add more technology, they’re detaching from their children. When parental attachment is absent, detached children can attach to devices, which can result in addiction. 1 in 11 children aged 8-18 are addicted to technology. 9. Radiation emission: May of 2011, the WHO classified cell phones as a category 2B risk (possible carcinogen) because of radiation emission. In 2013, Dr. Anthony Miller from the University of Toronto’s School of Public Health recommended that based on research, radio frequency exposure should be reclassified as 2A (probably carcinogen), not 2B. 10. Unsustainable: The way children are raised and educated in a technological world is no longer sustainable. What has the potential to teach practical life skills rather has become a viral sinkhole of aforementioned hazards. The future is bleak for children who overuse technology. 11. Eye strain: It is more common for children to suffer from eye strain after staring at screens for hours. This can also be called computer vision syndrome. You can avoid children with eye problems by limiting screen time to 30 minutes at a time. Veggie's 3rd time this year, for a good cause! Hair For Hope 2011! Extracted from: http://www.hairforhope.org.sg/index.php?/home/sectionpage/2 Into its 9th consecutive year, Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF) is organizing Hair for Hope (HfH) on 23rd and 24th July 2011 (Saturday and Sunday), from 11 am to 7 pm (on Saturday) and 1pm to 6 pm (on Sunday) at VivoCity. Through this symbolic gesture, we aim to: 1. Create awareness of childhood cancer in Singapore. 2. Show children with cancer and their families that they are not alone in their fight against cancer. 3. Tell children with cancer that it is OK to be bald. 4. Raise funds to help children with cancer and their families. 5. Build a community of support for children with cancer and their families. HfH is the only head-shaving event in Singapore that serves to raise funds and awareness of childhood cancer. Every shaven head represents an understanding by an individual of the ordeals that a child with cancer is subjected to. This year, we hope to encourage at least 3,000 participants to join our cause, with a target to raise at least S$1.8 million to aid children with cancer and their families. All funds raised will contribute to the overall annual $3.5 million needed to continue providing critical programmes and services to assist our children with cancer and their families. In addition, a total of 20 satellite shaving events would be organized in the months of June to August 2011 in various corporate offices and schools of CCF's partners.

LIFE Before Death Pediatric Palliative Care
DVD OUT NOW http://www.lifebeforedeath.com "Pediatric Palliative Care" Short film 21 of 50 in the LIFE Before Death documentary series about the global crisis in untreated pain and the dramatic life changing effect palliative care services can deliver to patients and their families around the world. In this short film we discover that the barriers to pediatric palliative care are very complex and pain in children is often under treated. We learn that providing good care is crucial to the quality of life for the child but that support needs to extend to the whole family. "I think that in the pediatric population pain is more frequently under recognized and under treated than it is in the adult population, though the medications are available, sometimes the training for physicians is a little bit inadequate and physician's feel unsure in their ability and concerned about the medications," reflects Dr Kim Bower (USA). "You know I always say, if you think doctors are frightened about giving morphine to an adult, put a child or a baby in front of them and ask them for morphine and they go tearing out the door because you just don't do that," states Professor Joan Marston (South Africa). "Children can't raise their voices, they can't tell you how they're feeling, they can't tell you how much pain they've got." Professor Marston recounts the story of a young girl being denied morphine by a pharmacist who felt she must be an addict until he actually went to the girl's bedside to see for himself, only to realize how wrong he was. In Uganda we meet a Wasswa, a child being treated by Dr Henry Ddungu (Uganda) with oral morphine to treat his cancer pain. "We now believe and we know it that a child can have as much pain as an adult," explains Dr Ddungu. "And so they are given treatment accordingly. When we start them on morphine, we give it to them until the pain is controlled, we don't have a ceiling dose that; 'Oh my god a child can not get more than this'. We give it to them according to how much they need to control their pain with minimum side effects." Dr Bower goes on to explain the importance of community involvement in a child's palliative care - especially when it comes to the parents and siblings -- but also the family's church or spiritual community as well as the school the children attend. Dr Bower explains that for kids, their desires and what they look forward to and want to do may be different to that of adults in that children want to enjoy time with their family and do normal and fun things like go to amusement parks. "It's important that families are supported to make this possible." We meet Jessica, Hendra and Esther (Indonesia), a family who have relocated Singapore to access care for Jessica. Jareal Bantilan their hospice physiotherapist tells us that the family hopes to take Jessica home to Indonesia but to do so she needs to be able to sit up on the plane, at that time she was admitted she was largely bedridden. Bantilan explains; "At first I tried to limit the exercise because I was worried Jessica might not be able to handle too much. But she was very motivated and wanted to do more, they now have hopes she may even be able to walk." "I think I can now tell them that we have a new family in Singapore," reflects Hendra. "We came to Singapore a little family but I have met so many people here who care about us, in this place where we are so far from home, we make our home here also, that's joyful for us!" Featuring Dr Kim Bower (USA), Professor Joan Marston (South Africa), Dr Henry Ddungu (Uganda), Jareal Bantilan (Singapore), Jessica, Hendra & Esther (Indonesia). LIFE Before Death comprises 50 short films themed around pain control and end of life issues, releasing one a week for a year from May 2011. A feature film was released in early 2012 and is available at http://www.lifebeforedeath.com The project is presented by the Lien Foundation and produced by Moonshine Movies. It is also supported by The International Association for the Study of Pain, The Mayday Fund, The Union for International Cancer Control and The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice International Programs. http://www.lifebeforedeath.com

Breakthrough in neuroblastoma and breast cancer research identifies new treatment targets A team of researchers have discovered a completely new pathway in which a cell protein causes two common forms of cancer, neuroblastoma and breast cancer. In neuroblastoma, the most common tumour of infants, and breast cancer, levels of the Myc proteins are commonly elevated in tumour cells. High levels of the protein are also associated with poor treatment outcomes. However, the way in which these proteins cause cancer has remained unknown. For the first time, researchers at Children's Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research (CCIA), and collaborators in Italy, describe how the Myc proteins lead to tumour formation. "Our results show that Myc proteins cause cancer by switching off genes involved in cancer prevention, such as transglutaminase 2 (TG2)," says Professor Glenn Marshall, Head of CCIA's Molecular Carcinogenesis Program and Director of the Centre for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders at Sydney Children's Hospital. "In addition to this, we have also shown that when the neuroblastoma and breast cancer cells are treated with a new class of anti-cancer drugs called histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs), they are able to turn the TG2 gene back on, which then inhibits tumour growth." The results which will be published this week in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA journal, describe in detail the complex interaction between the Myc protein, TG2 gene and HDACI drug within tumour cells. "This work highlights the importance of HDACIs for the treatment of cancers caused by the high levels of Myc proteins," says Professor Marshall. "More importantly, we identify TG2 as a potential drug development target for the treatment of these cancers. "We believe that TG2 mimetics, combined with HDACIs in cancer therapy, will have potent anticancer effects in cells driven by Myc proteins." -ends- This work was supported by funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council, Cancer Council New South Wales, Cancer Institute New South Wales, United States National Cancer Institute, University of New South Wales, Italian Association for Research on Cancer, Italian Ministry of University and Research, University of Bologna, and Regional Program for Industrial Research-ITT Emilia Romagna Region, Italy. Children's Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research is affiliated with the University of NSW and Sydney Children's Hospital. Note to editors The following manuscript will be published in the November issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA: Liu T, Tee AEL, Porro A, Smith SA, Dwarte T, Liu PY, Iraci N, Sekyere E, Haber M, Norris MD, Diolaiti D, Della Valle G, Perini G and Marshall GM (2007) "Activation of tissue transglutaminase trascription by histone deacetylase inhibition as a therapeutic approach for Myc oncogenesis". About CCIA Children's Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research (CCIA) is the only independent medical research institute in Australia devoted to research into the causes, better treatment, prevention and cure of childhood cancer. Girls who shaved heads told to wear wigs - 02Aug2013
SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education (MOE) says it provides schools with a set of guidelines in the management of school discipline. These include the objectives of discipline and communication of school rules. But within this set of guidelines, schools may formulate their own rules based on their school's context and needs. The MOE was responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia about five girls from St Margaret's Secondary School who had their heads shaven in support of the Hair for Hope charity event last Saturday. Three of them had turned up in school bald, even though they had promised their principal to wear wigs, while the other two kept their promise. Cherry Wong and Leia Lai, both 15 years old, were among those who took part in last Saturday's event and turned up at school on Monday without wearing wigs. Rules at St Margaret's Secondary do not allow "punk, unfeminine or sloppy hairstyles". Leia's mother, Mdm Emily Chia, said the girls were suspended from almost two lessons and made to sit in the general office. Two other girls from the same school who took part in the event, said they were willing to wear wigs since it was what they had promised their principal. Pee Chloe said: "Why should we go back on our words when we already promised her that? Even if (you would get rashes if you wear wigs)...at least you must (show) an MC (medical certificate) before saying, we don't want to wear our wigs and stuff." Sumiko Choo said: "The thing is, the principal already stated that if you are willing to do it (shave the head), you have to wear a wig. She stated it very clearly. "But if you are not willing to wear a wig, you can do it after you graduate." Hair for Hope is an annual event organised by the Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF), which raises funds to help children and their families affected by childhood cancer. According to CCF, 16 schools had participated as satellite partners -- 12 of which had female students shaving their heads for the cause. However, St Margaret's Secondary was not one of the participating schools. Weighing in on the issue, parents and other students had mixed reactions. One parent said: "Personally I find it a bit silly. If you are already pushing for that project, to ask a kid to show support by shaving her head, then why do you want them to wear a wig? Is it something shameful? I don't think so." St Margaret's Secondary School student Masturah Bagum said: "...they not abiding by the rules and not wearing a wig...I don't think it is right to push the blame to the school and the principal." Meanwhile, CCF said that it is heartened by the bravery and compassion of the five girls who had their heads shaved in the event. It said a key message of Hair for Hope is to let children who lost their hair following cancer treatment know that it is alright to be bald. CCF added that every shaven head in Hair for Hope represents the understanding by an individual of the ordeal that a child with cancer goes through. It also said the schools that took part in its satellite events did not raise any concerns about their students being bald during school time. Leia's mother, Mdm Chia said she is surprised this topic has gone viral online. "I'm glad that it created the awareness that we wanted to create, although our intention was never to shame the school or to shame the principal. "I think I just wanted the girls to have the recognition they should have gotten instead of being reprimanded." www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/girls-who-shaved-heads/763998.html

Moxie's Story | Children's Cancer Association
Six-year-old Moxie has a tumor wrapped around her optic nerve making for a difficult treatment, but when she met her Chemo Pal, Ashley, they hit it off instantly. Now, Moxie asks for Ashley before going to every appointment. The Children’s Cancer Association knows that for seriously ill children and their families every moment is precious. That’s why our programs leverage music, friendship, play, and resources to create transformative moments of joy for 20,000 children, teens, and their family members each year. We believe kids deserve long, wonderful lives. Or at the very least, short wonderful lives. Unlike many organizations dedicated to the worthy goal of someday finding a cure for cancer, CCA is all about creating joy today. See our programs in action at http://www.JoyRx.org.
