How to Fix a Car Starter

01:55
Watch more How to Make Simple Car Repairs videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/394210-How-to-Fix-a-Car-Starter Before you look under the hood, check out these tips for fixing a faulty car starter. Warning Working with jacks and electrical motors can be dangerous. To avoid injury, use caution and make sure the vehicle is stable before you work on it. Step 1: Rule out other causes Rule out other possible causes of the problem first, such as a faulty battery, gears, or the key connection. Tip If you hear the starter motor working well when you turn the key, the problem probably lies elsewhere. But a click, grind, silence, or weak sound may indicate a faulty starter. Step 2: Get to the starter Locate the starter either under the hood or from underneath. If you need to jack up the car to get to it, secure the car high up enough to slide under it and work. Step 3: Tap it Gently tap the starter cylinder with a wrench and test the ignition system to see if that solves the problem. Step 4: Label wires Label both sides of the wires connecting to the starter with masking tape, so you can put it back together properly later. Tip Consult the detailed repair manual for your car for tips on getting to and removing the starter. Step 5: Remove starter Remove the starter motor by unhooking the cables that connect to the battery and removing the bolts from the top and bottom with a ratchet and wrench set. Tip Most auto parts stores can test the starter at little or no cost to confirm your diagnosis. Step 6: Inspect the starter Inspect the starter for obvious damage to help determine whether the problem is in the motor or with the piece that is supposed to engage the flywheel. Step 7: Clean and reattach Fix any apparent problems, such as a jam or loose cable; then reattach the starter. If it still does not work, you probably need to buy a new one to replace it with. Either way, your vehicle will thank you. Did You Know? The first electrical starter system for cars was invented in 1911 by Charles Kettering.

The Basic Parts of an Automatic Transmission (Part 1)

28:14
Visit me at: http://www.ericthecarguy.com/ This is part one of my front wheel drive (FWD) automatic transmission dissection video. In this video I cover the operation of clutches, bands, accumulators, clutch drums, the oil pump, the valve body, valves, check balls, seals and 'o' rings, as well as the construction and function of many of the internal hard parts of an automatic transmission. To be honest a rear wheel drive transmission isn't much different as many of the basic components are the same. I guess what I'm saying is that you could use the information in this video to have a basic understanding of a rear wheel drive automatic transmission also. It is just a basic overview of the main components. I don't get into theory and operation so much. Just the general operation and identification of the parts. I may make more videos on this topic based on the comments I get so feel free to ask questions and perhaps I'll answer them in a future video on this topic. There will also be a separate video on the parts and operation of the torque converter as well. When that is posted I'll post links below to that video. Reading OBD-1 Codes on GM 1982-1995 | Without Code Reader!

05:28
Made a quick video on reading GM OBD-1 codes. Please consult the documentation in Chiltons, Haynes, or Alldata manual for your make/model. The under dash cowl was removed prior to the test. Your vehicle should have a small plastic tab that covers the OBD terminal, it can be pryed off w/a small screwdriver. To clear codes after repair, simply remove negative battery cable for a minute. It's a good idea also to do this during the repair.

Wes' Qualifications: He is recognized a leading expert in the automotive repair industry. He's collected more certifications, awards, and certificates than he can remember. The important ones are his ASE Automobile Master Certifications and his ASE Medium -- Heavy Truck Certifications. He has an Associate of Science Degree and is working toward achieving his Masters of Geology Degree. In 2003 he opened his own shop and aptly named it Above and Beyond Auto Repair. To date he's helped over 1 million+ people with car related issues through forums, trainings, videos, books, reports, service calls, service centers, educating fledgling mechanics, informational websites and several other training mediums and that number continues to grow every day. In November of 2011, he decided that 39+ years professionally making a living working on cars was enough. He sold the shop and became a full time business consultant, speaker, coach, teacher, author and internet marketing consultant. But his phone still rings a couple hundred times a month with questions about car repairs and how to ensure people are getting the best value, which inspired this book. Now you too can have peace of mind about knowing you cannot be taken advantage of any more. A Personal Guarantee and Note from Wes, If you do not feel you've received a minimum of double your investment, send in your proof of purchase (to me) and I'll send you DOUBLE what you paid for it (including shipping) AND you keep the book, the bonus videos and everything. I call it my 200% Satisfaction Guarantee. If for any reason you are not 200% completely satisfied for any reason, there is no charge what-so-ever. My goal is to help you, not take your money. All my contact information is provided in the book. Sincerely, Wesley "The Car Doctor" Harrison http://youtu.be/kNuQCJD8qvo

Help us to make future videos for you. Make LE's efforts sustainable. Please support us at Patreon.com ! https://www.patreon.com/LearnEngineering The operation of an automatic transmission is explained here with help of animation. Allison-1000 transmission model, which has 6 speed and reverse is used for this purpose. The video starts with an explanation of planetary gear set. Just by engaging few clutch packs different output speed can be achieved in automatic transmission. A brief introduction of the torque converter is also given here. Here is the 2D version of the video. In my opinion this video is more helpful than the 3D video to understand the technology. https://youtu.be/Ugao6jTyM7k Like us on FB : https://www.facebook.com/LearnEngineering Voice-over artist :https://www.fiverr.com/mikepaine

How To Test and Replace an Absolute Pressure Sensor P0105 HD

13:01
Click Here to Subscribe! http://youtube.com/carsntoys Website: http://carsntoys.net This was performed on a 1997 Nissan Maxima. Check with your vehicle's repair manual for testing parameters. Newer vehicles have the sensor 'built-into' the ECM. Always wear safety glasses! The absolute pressure sensor detects ambient barometric pressure and intake manifold pressure and modifies the voltage signal received from the ECM. As the pressure increases, the voltage rises. Note: This video is being performed by an experienced tech. Any attempt to repair automotive parts and/or systems carries risk of personal injury. Always adhere and follow safe practices when working on vehicles. Such as, use safety glasses, jack stands, no loose clothing, etc. No guarantee or warranty is implied. After a while, your handbrake may not be as tight and strong as it once was. In this video, I show you how to adjust it and make it tight again so it will be able to hold your car from rolling if you are on an hill. You can adjust your handbrake to lockup the back wheels or just so it is snug. Adjust it however you like, just make sure that you aren’t causing the rear brakes to drag while you are driving as you will wear out your brake pads prematurely. Auto: Side Mirror Replacement

11:51
How to do-it yourself instructional on replacing a side-view mirror on a car or light truck with complete inner door panel removal and installation process and discussions on torque and the over-tightening of fasteners. Transcript provided for the hearing impaired: OK so the problem is obvious, the driver's side view mirror is loose at the base. There is a broken mount. So stay tuned, we'll have a look. you've seen the problem, this mirror has a bad wobble in it because of a broken mount. we're going to, with a small handful of tools, remove the inside door panel and pull off the mirror, there's a little screw holds on that tray and another screw in here going to slip my little screwdriver in underneath, pry up on it, underneath there are a couple of hex headed screws remove with this little socket wrench. going to leave it hanging like that because I'm not going to disconnect components simply lifting the door panel off and let it hang get into this area. the only specialized tool you need made by Lisle. make your own need a piece of flat bar, cut a little groove in it bend the end of it. here's the diagram General Motors suggests your tool should look like. we start at the bottom, work your way in get the door panel off. last thing is a channel hooking into the door frame. need to be able to pop upwards and it's free. drop that through. little fellow comes in behind and pops free out used to cover access ports. pull them out carefully get in behind it with a screwdriver and chase it out through the front. 10mm socket. problem with a recess is I'm afraid to drop the nut inside the door panel. instead of undoing them all the way then I reach inside with my mechanical fingers... undo it the rest of the way with sure grip on the nut. And the mirror pulls away. there's an electrical connection. Pull back locking tab and it pulls apart. there's three studs third one's broken. service manual calls for 53 lb.in. show you on this wheel nut that you can easily put 53lb.ft. on with just one hand. a foot pound is 12 inch pounds so it's twelve times the power require on these little nuts. dialled in 53lb.ft.. I just wanted to show you how easy it is to make that kind of power never mind the 53lb.in., all you need to hang mirror. make some power. I was only a foot out rather than the actual full 18"... you see that? I don't turn at all and it's already saying 53lb.ft. make 53 lb.ft. just one hand and only twelve inches leverage. weather's changed hope there's enough light. get started by peeling off the tape. work with the window open, I'm working through window for your benefit.. touched up the paint where it's been worn off by mirror. parts dealer she was able to pick it off the shelf in minutes. don't live in a metropolitan area you might not be as lucky, wait a week or two... local scrap yard see if they've got it half the price a new one. electrical connection to go through I'm going to limit the amount of torque that I put behind this nut to ¼" socket wrench. got my nut loaded and it's in place with a bit of shop towel. find the stud. certain that's started now pull this off get the shop towel out of there and put this back on and spin it. all 3 nuts in place we can torque them down to spec. limit the torque I apply by using a ¼" socket wrench and choking half way up on it there's 40lb.in. and a zero we want to go to 53 don't know if you can see there's 50, 11, 12, 13, 40 and 13 is 53. torque these down you want to you want to bring all the bolts snug before you try and apply the torque developed a feel for it know spring about to jump. 1st one. 2nd. all three. letting go with this hand in order that it doesn't interfere with the torque I'm applying with this hand doing it with two fingers of pressure. some things can't take a lot of power you can make a lot of power no matter how small you think you are no matter how weak you might believe you're very strong compared to small fasteners and it's very easy to break them. foam bushings used for soundproofing. There's 1, 2, 3 they're just plugs cover the access port. body panel plugs I was mentioning. hang in little bracket/keepers on the inside panel they're all barbed and have pointed tips why you need that curved tool --get in behind it and it pops out. little hook, like that kind of deal . hook it into the door-panel right onto the steel inner door skin. pass this through there work on hooking that into the door.. Find keepers. little plastic piece holds door handle release and the actuator for the door lock. little keyhole type slot and lock actuator this rod and its got to be lined up. have both the actuator and the control both in the unlocked position. find neutral position work your way on from corner and snap drop a screw in behind there and we're done. last thing is hang convex "spotter" mirror on the outside lower corner I don't care what size vehicle you've got -- even a motorcycle -- you want convex mirrors on both sides.

No Start No injector pulse (shorted injector) part 2

09:31
In this part 2 of 2 video we will be focused on the injector resistance measurements. So if you do not have a scope, there are ways to identify this condition with an ohmmeter. Here is part 1 https://youtu.be/KF9viLxwJNc This problem is specific to GM vehicles built from the late 80s through the early 90s. Here is a partial list of the cars that used this style fuel injector. - 5.0 and 5.7 in the Corvette and Camaro - 2.8, 3.1, 3300 (Chevy, Buick, Olds, Pontiac) - 1.9 (Saturn) - 4.9 (Cadillac) The first time I ran into one of these, I mistakenly replaced the engine computer in an attempt to fix the no injector pulse condition. It is strange that one shorted fuel injector can cause all the other injectors to not fire, but this is exactly what can happen with a group fired system. “Group fire” means there is only one transistor in the computer that controls all of the injectors at the same time. For this reason, power window vehicles are still up and running especially in places with low humidity where rust is not an issue. A power window system uses a DC motor to actuate the glass and open the door windows. The DC motor works in the nominal 2 to 5 Amp current range. For this reason, a relay has almost always been used to control the motor. The basic motor operation is done by reversing the polarity of it's power and ground input. It is here where a properly connected window motor makes the whole arrangement worthwhile and stable. Although window motors come in various sizes, their nominal electric current range may go as high as 6 Amps, with peak voltages as much as 12 Amps if extreme resistance is found. Relays can deliver up to 40 Amps of power making them the best real world choice. Transistors have been used in the past and even on some new models, but they eventually falter and leave the driver to eat up the cost of replacement. This circuit connection is very useful due to the fact that many older vehicles can be re-wired using original or aftermarket parts, keeping the windows operational. Here is how the window motor circuit works: 12 volt power is fed from the fuse to terminal 87 of the relay. This terminal then becomes the power input. Power is also fed to terminal 85 of the relay coil on both relays. Terminal 87A is connected directly to ground, so this terminal becomes the chassis ground input. Then, terminal 30 is wired directly to the window motor relay. Each relay feeds ...... Get the whole story right here in this video....Enjoy... Inline 3 Cylinder Engine - Explained

03:09
The inline 3 cylinder engine is similar to an inline 6, but cut in half. I3's make a good choice for small, compact, and cost-effective engines producing good fuel economy. The primary and secondary forces are balanced (vertically), though unlike an I6 there is a rocking moment front to back on the engine, as there is a plane imbalance. These engine are becoming more popular with demand for greater fuel economy rising. They've also seen some use with modern sports/race cars, used in the Nissan ZEOD RC as well as the BMW i8.
