If you are suffering from allergies, the first thing you should do is talk to your doctor. Most likely, you will be prescribed a combination of medicines that will control your allergy symptoms. Nasal sprays, antihistamines, eye drops, and decongestants work together to relieve symptoms like swelling, itching, runny nose, and congestion. There are also over-the-counter options for treatment, depending on the severity of your allergies. They can be very effective and a less expensive option for many patients. Side effects may include drowsiness or anxiety. When treating your allergies, there are a few safety precautions you should consider. Never drink alcohol or take tranquilizers while on antihistamines. If you have glaucoma, thyroid, heart, or prostate problems, check with your CVS pharmacist before taking over-the-counter drugs or medicine preparations. If you're breastfeeding or taking certain medicines to treat depression, consult your pharmacist first. Also, it is possible to become dependent on nasal sprays, so be careful when you use them to reduce symptoms. If your symptoms are year-round or you don't respond to other medications, you may be a good candidate for an allergy shot. An allergy shot is a long-lasting solution with a success rate of 70 to 90 percent. It consists of a series of shots containing small, purified doses of your allergy trigger. This dose is gradually increased over time until your body is eventually immune to the allergen. Downsides of allergy shots include weekly visits to the doctor for two to six months and possible allergic reactions. You can see there are many considerations when treating your allergies. If you have any questions, talk to your CVS pharmacist. We're here to help. Source: CVS Caremark Health Resources

Leaking brain mistaken for runny nose

Arizona resident Joe Nagy mistook his constant runny nose for an allergy when in fact it was brain fluids that were coming out of his nose. Nagy's symptoms continued for 18 months. He tried taking allergy medicine, but it didn't stop the clear liquid from coming out of his nostrils. After an examination, a doctor found that the liquid was actually Nagy's brain leaking fluids, due to small hole on the membrane around his brain. What Causes Allergic Conjunctivitis?

02:59
Dr. Sean S Da Silva, Medical Superintendent, Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgeon, The Eye Foundation, Bangalore, India, explains the causes and treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. He also advises on some of the do's and don'ts for individuals suffering from it. Allergic conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the thin and clear membrane (conjunctiva) that covers the eyeball due to an allergy-causing agent. The eyes release the chemical histamine whenever they are exposed to an allergen, resulting in watery, swollen, itchy, red eyes. It is not contagious. “School-going children are very vulnerable to this type of conjunctivitis. Most kids pick up the allergens from their school, playgrounds or home. Some of the commonest allergens are pollen, animal dander, mold, dust, perfume, cosmetics, smoke, certain eye drops, etc.” Allergic conjunctivitis tends to affect both the eyes at the same time with the same severity. Allergic conjunctivitis can be: Perennial (all year-round): It is mostly in reaction to an animal dander, mold spores or dust mites. Seasonal: It is mostly reported in dry and windy season. Air-borne allergens such as pollen are the main culprits. Prevention Removing the allergens is the best way to avoid frequent episodes of allergic conjunctivitis: Get rid of dust mites: Remove carpets. Disinfecting bedding, pillows and mattresses help. Avoid pets: Dog and cat dander are well-known allergens. e The doctor will usually prescribe eye drops or medication to reduce the inflammation. Lubricating eye drops can be prescribed to wash away the allergens. Applying cold compresses to the eyes helps in easing the pain. Ask the Expert: Getting kids ragweed relief

02:18
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A warning for parents who have children with allergies, ragweed season is hitting hard this year. Family medicine experts Local 12 News talked to at Tri-Health said it was important to get kids treatment for allergies as soon as possible. Due to a wet early summer, ragweed season is hitting early and hard which means people don't want to chase symptoms. It's not uncommon as kids go back to class to see colds and viruses spike. But if the sneezing, itchy eyes, and scratchy throat hit suddenly too, it's likely allergies. Getting them on medications to ease the symptoms is critical to healthy sleep and healthy learning. Dr. Scott Woods said, If your child has bad allergies historically it would be good to get ahead of it. Dr. Woods told Local 12 that when parents don't intervene with medications and lifestyle changes from the great outdoors they run the risk kids will be miserable for months. It stops a lot of the inflammatory, the allergic inflammatory process before it gets started. Once you have very intense allergies in your respiratory tract inflamed it's very hard to cool that down; its a very difficult process, takes a lot longer, said Dr. Woods. Allergy experts said that they didnt want to limit a child's activities outdoors but parents should know that anything outside comes into the home. So especially at night and before bedtime people need to make sure those allergens are no longer on the skin, hair and on clothing. Parents should have kids change clothes and shower off the allergens as soon as they are home. And be careful about letting them sleep with pets that have been outside too. Air conditioning inside, instead of windows, can help and it's suggested parents don't hang laundry or clothing outside to dry. It's important to remember it's always a combination of things that might be different for every child and if prescription or over-the-counter kids medications aren't working parents may need allergy shots or drops year round. Dr.Gorden T. Mcmurry MD :children and ragweed allergies

01:19
Are ragweed allergies making your child sick? Does your little one have episodes of hayfever, with sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose or a stopped up nose. Children who suffer from inhalant allergies may have year round symptoms, that is perennial symptoms or they may have seasonal flare-ups. If your child is bothered with seasonal allergies, they are usually mostly bothered in the spring and the fall. Fall allergy symptoms may be worse than spring symptoms and the major culprit involved is the pollen of the common weed, ragweed. The flowers are small and green in color so we usually do not see them. In the Louisville each year, August 15 is "Pearl Harbor" for allergic children. Ragweed, both the small and giant variety, start flowering in the Louisville area on August 15th every year, regardless of the weather. It does not matter if the summer has been hot and dry or cool and damp, ragweed flowers the same day every year. The ragweed pollen is very light and blows readily through the air and thus easily gets into your child's nose and respiratory tract. Unfortunately, it flowers for a long time each fall, staying in bloom until there is a hard freeze. As we all know, this can be anywhere from October until early January each year in the Louisville area. So if your child has an allergy to ragweed, August 15th is like the attack at Pearl Harbor. 3 Common Indoor Allergy Myths

02:10
For more information: http://bit.ly/1nAByD7 COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A yellow dusting of pollen might have you running for cover behind closed windows and doors. Not so fast. An allergist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center says indoor allergens cause just as much trouble, and they're around year-round. However, a few common misconceptions about indoor allergies could mean you are making things worse for yourself. Bedding: If you've given up on down or feather bedding in favor of hypo-allergenic down alternative products, then you might be missing out. Dr. Nabeel Farooqui, an allergy and immunology specialist at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center says it's usually not the down or feathers that are to blame. "That material is washed thoroughly and stuffed inside very tightly-woven casings. Synthetic materials often have looser-weave casings which can allow more dust, mold and dander to collect. That's most often what people are allergic to -- not the feathers themselves," Farooqui said. He recommends using the bedding material you find most comfortable, and wash it regularly in hot water to minimize dust and dander allergens. You can also try using dust mite covers on bedding. Black mold: Mold spores are all around us and, while some people can be sensitive to high levels of mold, they generally do not cause serious health problems. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the type often described as 'toxic black mold' (stachybotrys chartarum) isn't actually toxic. "This type of mold usually does not aerosolize and get breathed in because it's sticky from growing in a moist environment," Farooqui said. "There have been studies to examine the toxicity of this mold, but the evidence isn't there. However, molds commonly worsen asthma and allergy symptoms." Farooqui says if you are sensitive to high levels of mold spores, avoid stirring up mulch, compost or decaying leaves when you're outside. When indoors, identify water leaks and other sources of moisture and get them repaired. Mold on hard surfaces can be cleaned away with a diluted bleach solution. Moldy absorbent materials like drywall, carpet or ceiling tiles need to be replaced. Hypoallergenic pets: Animal lovers who find themselves allergic to four-legged family members might spring for a pure-bred poodle, Bengal cat or other breed thought to be hypoallergenic, but Farooqui says don't expect allergy symptoms to go away completely. "In short, completely hypoallergenic pets just don't exist," Farooqui said. "The fur isn't the problem. The allergens are in the pet's dander, which are derived from proteins in the skin, saliva and urine. We advise people to bathe their pet regularly to reduce dander. Keep the bedroom pet-free and use a HEPA air filter. If you're still having symptoms, talk to your doctor to see if you are a candidate for prescription medicine or allergy shots." According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, about 40 million Americans report having at least one indoor/outdoor allergy and it can be hereditary. If one parent has an allergy, there is a 1 in 3 chance their child will have it. When both parents have the allergy, there is a 7 in 10 chance their child will too. Farooqui says it's important to see a board-certified allergist to identify your specific allergy triggers and treat the symptoms properly -- because the allergy might not always be caused by what you think.

Chronic coughing: Possible causes and treatment

02:34
Chronic cough is defined as daily coughing for three weeks or more. Although a common complaint in smokers, when non-smokers have a chronic cough with a normal X-ray, the cause is likely one of three things, says Jeffrey Weiland, MD, a pulmonologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. In half of the cases, it's because of undiagnosed asthma. In the other half, the cause is typically post-nasal drip (particularly common in those 60 or older) or acid reflux. Even when there are no other symptoms of acid reflux, Dr. Weiland explains that it only takes one teaspoon of acid to cause coughing. When patients do present with a chronic cough and have a normal X-ray, asthma treatment is initiated. If that does not resolve the issue, Dr. Weiland then refers patients to an ear, nose and throat specialist to look at the voice box for any indications of irritation or reflux. Its FREE to subscribe!!! Thanks so much for watching, see you next week:) Why is my toddler coughing year round? My eldest daughter is almost 3 now and she has had issues with excessive coughing for 2 years now. From what we know she does have asthma and she has been on puffers steadily now for over a year. Her coughing has gotten worse this Summer. In the past she would just get coughs along with colds in the winter, and they would linger for 3-4 weeks afterwards. This year, however, her consistent cough has not gone away. We do have an appointment set up at the childrens hospital with an asthma specialist in a months time. In the meantime, we thought we would try to find out the reasoning behind all this coughing. It can be very scary, and we have taken her to emergency on average 2-3 times per year as she coughs so much she can hardly breathe. We took her to a nutritionist who gave her a food allergy test. Turns out she is allergic to cows milk and whey. I used to give her yogurt tubes on a very regular basis thinking they were a healthy snack and it turns out they were causing her to be so inflammed, which was in turn causing her to cough and essentially have asthma due to the fact that they have whey in them. I also cut out cows milk so she drinks coconut milk and chocolate almond milk instead. She stopped coughing within days. I have also been able to keep her on the lowest dose of puffers for the past month until i see the specialist. I am really hopeful that this is truly what is causing her asthma and it is just this quick fix. If anyone else is going through this, my recommendation would be to check food allergies first. You never know, it might be just a simple solution. At least you can hope as that one is the easiest to fix. Thanks so much for watching:)

The idea of the treatment is to re-balance your body, through your own energy. Karyn Maag, a severe allergy sufferer, was desperate for help and decided to try NAET. Someone had given her a book about the treatment years ago but she tossed it aside, until she decided she needed help. "It's really crazy but it does work," she says. Maag said she left her first treatment "just laughing, thinking this is ridiculous." As ridiculous as NAET seemed, she came back because no one else could help her. Maag says she was "allergic to every vegetable and fruit you can imagine—and wheat, calcium, the sun." She was even allergic to shopping—when she touched new clothes her hands would start to burn and get a rash from the formaldehyde on the clothing. Maag says that all stopped after her NAET treatments. The results she says were almost immediate, though she didn't know what to think. Maag said "at first my husband said if you have a positive attitude you can make your body heal with anything." She said she was sure that wasn't it. Since she was laughing at how ridiculous it was the entire time she figured the placebo effect could not be the answer. Doctor Gary Olsen, a chiropractor at Pioneer Comprehensive in Draper who offers NAET treatments, says, "It will work whether you believe or not believe." He admits NAET treatments can seem a bit out there but says that they are very simple and based on Oriental medicine, acupuncture and a mix of western medicine. A doctor uses muscle testing to see what you're allergic to in your first appointment. For that you hold a vile of an allergen while the doctor tests your strength. If you show weakness it is a weakness your body has for the substance. Dr. Olsen heard about the treatment a few years ago from a doctor who was having success with it in St. George. Olsen says that once he saw the results, and the patient's results, he "was kind of blown away" That's when he started training. He has been using the technique now in his office for 3 years. He explains the success saying, "It's about energy and stopping your body from hyper reacting to an allergen." For many people it means headaches, exhaustion, digestive issues and other seasonal allergy symptoms. The treatments are fairly quick. You leave the office with a vile of the substance you're allergic to, taped to your leg. Olsen says it stays there for 25 hours, giving your body 2 hours to work through the 12 basic meridians that open energy flow. At home every two hours, while you're awake, you stimulate those 12 energy points and avoid the allergen. Olsen claims it works in 75-80 percent of the people, saying he's seen "phenomenal results, life changing results." Karen Maag no longer suffers from allergies. Her daughter, Danyelle, who has also been treated with NAET, has seen marked improvement but still has issues with gluten, which is not unusual. Olsen says dairy and wheat allergies can be treated but are more stubborn. He explains that they are "a chronic problem going on for a long time. We have them change their diet first and use NAET to get them less sensitive to gluten in the future." Olsen himself says that he had a milk allergy he was able to treat but his daughter, who is also intolerant to milk, has not been helped. As for Maag's skeptical husband? He's had a change of heart. Maag says, "He gave in and came to see Dr. Olsen because he couldn't handle his spring allergies. Within two days he was sending everyone at work to get it done. He said it was amazing and couldn't believe how it helped him." The treatments are not covered by insurance. There are only a dozen providers in Utah—they range from $40-$60 a visit. If you only have spring tree pollen allergy, or another single allergy, it is supposed to be a quick in and out visit. If you have issues with multiple seasonal and food allergies it can take a little longer because each is treated separately. As always talk to your own doctor before you try anything.
