Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is defined as high pressure in the arteries, that are the vessels which carry blood from the heart to the body. It’s easy to tell whether an adult has high blood pressure because there’s a standard set of measurements: Normal blood pressure—systolic under 120 mmHg and diastolic under 80 mm Hg; Pre-hypertension—systolic 120-139 mmHg or diastolic 80-89 mmHg; Stage 1 hypertension—systolic 140-159 mmHg or diastolic 90-99 mmHg; Stage 2 hypertension—systolic ≥160 or diastolic ≥100 mmHg. Approximately 86 million adults (about 1 out of every 3) in the United States have hypertension. Many factors can affect blood pressure, including - smoking, leading a sedentary lifestyle, a diet with a high salt intake, being overweight or obese, long-term sleep deprivation, a diet focused on meat, dairy products, and eggs, high LDL cholesterol, alcohol abuse or chronic alcohol use, or a family history of high blood pressure. If high blood pressure remains untreated, it can cause kidney failure, heart disease, and increases the risk of stroke. High blood pressure commonly has no symptoms and is often labeled "the silent killer." However, a few people with high blood pressure may experience: #1 Vision problems - hypertension can damage the vessels supplying blood to your retina, causing retinopathy. This serious condition can lead to blurred vision, bleeding in the eye, and complete loss of vision. #2 Nausea - a sensation of unease and discomfort in the stomach with an urge to vomit. #3 Headaches - some individuals with hypertension may experience headaches, but they usually don't occur unless the pressure is notably raised. #4 Erectile Dysfunction - the inability to have and maintain an erection becomes increasingly common in men as they reach age 50. But high blood pressure damages the lining of blood vessels and causes atherosclerosis, limiting blood flow to the penis. #5 Kidney Damage - a high blood pressure can cause damage to the filters and blood vessels in the kidney, making removal of waste from the body difficult. #6 Fatigue - feeling tired all the time and experiencing difficulty with everyday activities, such as climbing stairs, shopping, walking, or carrying groceries. #7 Mental function can also change as a result of hypertension with many experiencing difficulties finding words, memory loss, and an inability to focus. #8 Heart palpitations - to "make up for" the loss in pumping capacity, the heart beats faster. #9 Chest pain which may radiate to the back, arms, neck or jaw. #10 Ringing in the ear - considering the immense amounts of blood flowing in and out of the head and this area, it is no surprise that hypertension can affect one’s hearing. Note - According to various studies, foods or beverages that may help reduce hypertension include - whole grains, legumes, flax seeds, beets, dark green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, potatoes, hibiscus tea, and foods high in potassium (such as pistachios, bananas, raisins, almonds, dates). AGE Most people don’t realize that AGE is one of the BIGGEST factors for high blood pressure. I discuss this in my very important article, but what’s important to note is that after the age of 40, 33% of the population has high blood pressure and after the age of 60, over 71% of the population has hypertension! So, if you’re over the age of 40 and have high blood pressure, it may not be your fault. But it IS your responsibility to fix it right away and here is how I lowered my dad’s blood pressure naturally, in just 30 days. 2. GENETICS & FAMILY HISTORY Well, not much can be done here. This is in fact my own problem because I have a family history (on my dad’s side) of hypertension, heart attacks and especially strokes. SMOKING Come on people, smoking has NO health benefits. STOP smoking! 4. ALCOHOL A little bit of alcohol is okay, especially if it’s organic red wine. But drinking every night will cause damage to your heart, arteries and liver. Alcohol is a toxic and it’s acidic, both being bad for your body. 5. BEING OVERWEIGHT Similar to smoking, being overweight has no health benefits. And the older you get, the harder it is to lose that unwanted fat. 6. SODIUM Salt has its benefits actually. Regular table salt or salt found in processed foods and packages is BAD for you. However, “natural” salts such as Himalayan rock or Celtic sea salt is GOOD for you and can actually help LOWER blood pressure. I’ll discuss this in a future article. 7. STRESS Well know stress is bad. However, you can’t get rid of it. What’s important is the MEANING you give to stressful situations. If you freak out, get negative and focus on the problem the entire time … you put your body under extra stress. The secret is to focus on the SOLUTION and to know that “this too shall pass” and worrying about the problem isn’t going to help anything… Especially our blood pressure or heart. 8. LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY We sit too much these days. Just get outside and walk daily, even if it’s just for 15-20 minutes. It’ll do wonders for your physical AND mental health! 9. MEDICAL CONDITIONS This goes back to “genetics”. And if you know you have a genetic “problem”, which is making things worse, then you MUST make changes to your life-style because your body is more sensitive than the average person. This is a similar problem with my dad and why he had a stroke. 10. MEDICATION Ironically, many “heart” medications actually cause more heart PROBLEMS in the long run. They can increase your cholesterol, blood sugar or blood pressure levels. They can decrease blood flow and circulation. As far as clinical evidence, in one study of over 6250 people, cutting salt intake did NOT reduce the risk for heart attacks, strokes or death.1 In another study in 2013, it showed that lower salt consumption actually INCREASED your risk of death from heart disease.2 A review of the available research reveals that much of the science behind the supposed link between “salt and high blood pressure” is dubious and doubtful at best. According to Scientific American:3 "Intersalt, a large study published in 19884, compared sodium intake with blood pressure in subjects from 52 international research centers and found NO relationship between sodium intake and the prevalence of hypertension. In fact, the population that ate the most salt, about 14 grams a day, had a lower median blood pressure than the population that ate the least, about 7.2 grams a day... For every study that suggests that salt is unhealthy, multiple ones reveal that it does not." So what about the studies that show lowering salt is good for blood pressure? A 2004 analysis of 11 salt-reduction trials found that over the long-term, low-salt diets decreased systolic blood pressure by 1.1 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure by 0.6 mmHg. That equates to reducing your blood pressure from 120/80 to 119/79.6 A 2006 study in the American Journal of Medicine study compared the reported daily sodium intakes of 78 million Americans to their risk of dying from heart disease over the course of 14 years. The study concluded that lower sodium diets led to HIGHER death rates among those with cardiovascular disease!7 I can go on and on, but I hope you see where this is leading. Salt is good for you. Not only is salt relatively benign, it's actually a nutritional goldmine,... Regular table salt will damage your health, while natural salts are profoundly healing. Here's a quick break-down of their basic ingredients: Natural salt: 84 percent sodium chloride, 16 percent naturally-occurring trace minerals, including silicon, phosphorous, vanadium, magnesium, potassium, etc. Processed (table) salt: 97.5 percent sodium chloride, 2.5 percent man-made chemicals, such as moisture absorbents and flow agents. These are dangerous chemicals. Processing table salt also radically alters and damages the structure of the salt. Blood pressure is the force the circulating blood EXERTS on the walls of blood vessels. It is different in different types of vessels, but the term ”blood pressure”, when not specified otherwise, refers to ARTERIAL pressure in the SYSTEMIC circulation. When the heart contracts and pumps blood into the aorta, during systole, the aortic pressure RISES, and so does the systemic arterial pressure. The maximum pressure following an ejection is called the SYSTOLIC pressure. In between heart beats, when the ventricles refill, blood pressure FALLS to its lowest value called the DIASTOLIC pressure. THESE are the 2 numbers on a blood pressure reading. Blood pressure normally shows a daily pattern and is usually lower at night. During day-time, it fluctuates with physical activities and emotional states. Hypertension refers to a PERSISTENT HIGH blood pressure. In the US, high blood pressure used to be defined as greater than 140/90, but recent guidelines have changed these values to 130/80 to better prevent and treat the condition. Normal blood pressure is BELOW 120/80. In practice, blood pressure is considered TOO low ONLY if it produces symptoms. Hypertension does NOT cause symptoms on its own, but it slowly DAMAGES blood vessels, and in the long-term, is a MAJOR risk factor for a variety of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, aneurysm and heart attack; as well as end organ damage such as renal failure or vision loss. For this reason, hypertension is known as the “SILENT killer”. Hypertension can be classified as primary or secondary, with the former being responsible for over 90% of cases. Primary hypertension has NO apparent cause and may develop as a result of old age, obesity, high-salt diet, lack of exercise, smoking and drinking. Most commonly, the blood vessels are hardened with age or unhealthy diets, making it harder for blood to flow. Secondary hypertension, on the other hand, is caused by an underlying condition. Many conditions and factors can cause hypertension; most notable are kidney problems and endocrine disturbances. Regardless of the cause, the INcrease in blood pressure is produced by EITHER an INcrease in vascular resistance - narrower or stiffer blood vessels; OR an INcrease in cardiac output – larger volume of blood pumped out by the heart. These 2 factors are the targets of antihypertensive drugs. Treatments must start with life style changes such as healthy, low-sodium diets, physical exercise and stress management. On top of that, antihypertensive agents may be used to control hypertension. These include: - Vasodilators: these drugs DILATE blood vessels, thereby DEcreasing vascular resistance and reducing blood pressure. - Diuretics: diuretics promote sodium and water removal by the kidneys and thereby DEcrease blood volume. - Drugs that DEcrease cardiac output by decreasing heart rate or contractility, may also be used to treat hypertension.

BLURRY VISION; Why is yours Vision Blurry. Thousands of people suffer daily from blurred or diffuse vision, a disorder that has many causes and one you should not ignore. Above all if this problem is accompanied by headaches, dizziness, tiredness and nausea, it is very important that you find out why and how to prevent it. Do you often find yourself blinking, squinting, or rubbing your eyes to gain a clearer view? If you have blurry vision, you might chalk it up to age or needing new glasses. But it can be a sign of other health problems, too. Often, treatment for these conditions will clear up your blurred vision. Remember, though, that sudden changes to your eyesight aren’t normal, so if they happen, see your doctor right away. Could It Be Diabetes? The condition raises your risk for an eye disease called diabetic retinopathy. Over time, high blood sugar can damage the tiny blood vessels in your retina, the part of your eye that senses light. That can lead to swelling in a part of the retina called the macula. Along with blurry vision, diabetic eye disease may also cause: “Floating” spots in your field of vision Blindness Early treatment is the best way to ward off permanent damage. So protect your eyes from diabetes by getting them checked at least once a year. Could It Be a Stroke? One of the key signs that you’re having a stroke is a sudden, painless change in eyesight. You might have blurry vision, see double, or suddenly lose your sight. A migraine is more than a horrible headache. There are a host of other symptoms that you might have with the pain, including blurry vision and sensitivity to light. You may feel these signs even before a migraine starts, and they may last until it’s over. More dramatic changes to your eyesight during a migraine are called an aura. They can include: Loss of part or all of your vision for a little while Seeing flashes of light Seeing wavy lines or spots To solve these problems, you’ll need to work with your doctor to treat your migraines and keep them from starting. You may know this condition from these symptoms: Itchy or sore patches of skin Joint pain and inflammation Thick, red, scaly patches on the skin But psoriasis can affect your eyes, too. However, recent research has found a direct connection between high blood pressure levels and the use non-aspirin painkillers - such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin). Additionally, the report reveals a much higher risk for women, than men! A Harvard study involved 5,123 women age 34 to 77, all having healthy blood pressure levels to start. However, here’s what the study revealed: For women not taking painkillers, the risk of developing high blood pressure levels was only about 1-3 percent a year. Women taking 400 mg a day of over-the-counter painkillers (the equivalent of two ibuprofen) had a 60-78 percent increased risk of developing high blood pressure levels. Women taking an average daily dose of 500 mg of acetaminophen (one extra-strength tablet) had a 93-99 percent increased risk of developing high blood pressure levels within three years. That’s DOUBLE! The cause of this is because of the fluid retention and decreased kidney function due to these drugs. Why Is It Worse For Women? This is because women have smaller blood vessels in the heart, making them more vulnerable to high blood pressure and inflammation of the blood vessels. Now, aging causes higher blood pressure for BOTH men and women. However, as women get closer to menopause, there is a dramatic drop in estrogen, which causes a woman’s arteries to become less elastic and more constrictive, thus contributing to high blood pressure. Unfortunately, giving women synthetic hormones (estrogen and especially progesterone) makes this situation only worse. The Problem Started In The 1970s Food and beverage manufacturers began switching their sweeteners from sucrose (table sugar) to corn syrup in the 1970s when they discovered that High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) was far cheaper to use in their products. In fact, HFCS is the #1 source of calories in America!!!( 3) It’s found in almost everything you can think of. More specifically, in sodas and fruit juices. But also in many pre-packaged foods. This also includes “healthy sugars” sweetened with agave. My Proven “Prescription” and Recommendation For You You must do your best to limit and eliminate all HFCS and to do this, make sure you read labels. Again, the LESS pre-packaged the food, the better. Limit your TOTAL fructose to 25 grams or less, that’s about 100 calories daily. This includes the natural fructose found in fruits. If you are already suffering from high blood pressure or signs of insulin resistance like diabetes, overweight and high cholesterol, you should be particularly careful to limit your fructose, including that from whole fruits, to 15 grams per day or less. That’s about 60 calories daily. So there you have it. Focus more on limiting your sugars, this includes fruit sugar, fructose … and especially “high fructose corn syrup” which is found in most pre-packaged foods, especially sodas and fruit juices. In rare circumstances when people do experience symptoms, they may have a headache, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, heart palpitations and nose bleeds. According to Holland and Barrett, beetroot juice is your secret weapon in the fight against high blood pressure. A British Heart Foundation study showed drinking a cup (250ml) of beetroot juice day could significantly lower the blood pressure of people with hypertension. The high street health shop explains: “The nitrates in betroth are the magic ingredient but beware - because they’re water soluble, boiling your beets will reduce the beneficial effects. It advises that roasting or juicing are the best ways to have beetroot. So what is considered a normal reading? But, it’s not possible to get a diastolic blood pressure reading without equipment. First, find your pulse along your left arm. You’re looking for a radial pulse, which is below the thumb, and a little above your wrist. If you can feel the pulse without any difficulty, your systolic blood pressure is at least 80mmHg. In women nearing 50 there are multiple causes for right sided headache. The major cause for right sided headache is Migraine. Migraine is a vascular headache caused by the over dilatation of blood vessels. Stress, Long hours of hunger, high blood pressure all this are factors which can lead to migraine. For migraine its basically symptomatic treatment we usually give pain killers so that the symptoms get subsided. The other causes for headaches are Cervical Spondylosis which leads to compression of blood vessels on the right side giving them severe headache again the treatment is symptomatic with pain killers. The other cause is temporal arthritis this is a muscular headache and this leads to severe pain on the right side. We give them muscle relaxants. They could also be reasons like tumours which can lead to headaches which can turn to be permanent severe headaches. For this we have to go for a CT scan to confirm the diagnosis.

But some factors that contributes to the cause of high BP are age, race, overweight, hereditary, intake of excess sodium, use of alcohol, lack of exercise and also due to intake of certain medications. Some of the major symptoms of high BP are-blurred vision, Nausea, dizziness and constant headache. Sometimes the high BP show no symptoms but cause progressive damage to heart, blood vessels and other organs. If the degree of high blood pressure is high then it requires immediate hospitalization. It is very necessary to lower the BP to prevent stroke or brain hemorrhage. It can be reduced to a great extent through nutritional changes. First, let's quickly review how medical massage therapy affects the arterial blood pressure in patients with EH. There are three major mechanisms which massage practitioners should use to help patients with hypertension: Balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system, vasodilate the vertebral arteries and reduce peripheral vascular resistance. These three mechanisms are intimately correlated, hence the need to discuss them together as parts of the same process. Vertebral arteries arise from the subclavian arteries. They ascend through the cervical vertebrae and enter the skull where they unite to form the basilar artery, supplying the posterior part of the brain. The vertebral arteries also give off two important arterial branches that supply the entire spinal cord: The anterior spinal artery and two posterior spinal arteries. The pathway of the vertebral arteries through the cervical vertebrae is quite complex. The transverse process of each cervical vertebra has a special opening called the transverse foramen through which the vertebral artery passes. Cervical vertebrae are positioned on top of one another such that these openings form a bony canal through which the vertebral arteries ascend. The walls of vertebral arteries have their own sympathetic plexus innervation, regulating their constriction and dilation. It follows that any irritation to this plexus may result in their contraction.
