Hold tight and welcome to today's Plumberparts.co.uk video. My name's James and this is gonna be a really, really quick video. What we're gonna talk about today is bypass valves. Now on this particular system here, we've got a bypass valve that's effectively a gate valve. So that means that you set it at one point, and then leave it for the rest of it's life. But you can also get automatic bypass valves that are a lot better because they're a lot more efficient for the heating system, but for the purposes of this video, to see where they fit in on a heating system, this particular layout that we've got behind us here is just fine. So if you come over here and have a closer look, I'll give you an idea about what bypass valves do, where they sit in the heating system, and then we'll go back to the white board to show you this lot all laid out schematically. So all right, on this system here, we've got our flow coming up from the boiler here. It goes through the pump, and the up. We've got an automatic air vent up there so that just vents the pump out. And it comes back down here, and this is a S-plan system. At this point here, it's really important. Effectively it can go one of three ways. If the radiators are calling for heat so the programme is calling for, and also the thermostat's calling. This two port valve here is going to open up, send a live supply to the boiler, and the pump to come on. That's great, brilliant, everything's good. We've got loads of water coming around there. If this tank here is calling for heat, so the programme is calling for heat, and the thermostat in the centre of the tank is calling for heat, this two port valve here's going to open up and send water around the coil of this tank here. Well funnily enough actually, this tank doesn't actually have a call on it. It's tank in tank beast, but let's say this tank is not calling for heat, but this radiator valve here, the two port valve for the radiators is open. That's where the bypass valve comes in. So say you've got say ten radiators on the heating system, and they've all got thermostatic radiator valves on them. As those thermostatic radiator valves turn down and turn down, on an old system, and also on some of the new systems as well, that's gonna cause more stress on the pump. Now that's where the bypass valve comes in. The bypass valve, especially in the type that we've got here, is set to constantly let a small trickle of water through directly onto the turn back to the boiler. What that means is is that you've got a constant flow around the heating system at all times regardless of whether the radiators are open or either of the two port valves are open. This is also really handy if either of these valves fail. So to recap really quickly, the bypass valves ensures that there's a constant flow of hot water around the heating system through the boiler and the pump at all times regardless of whether there's been a problem with any of the valves or if the TRVs are open or closed. So why do we want to do that? That's the big question. If either of these valves go wrong or there's some sort of problem and flow is completely restricted round the heating system, number one, the pump is gonna struggle, okay? Now in new modern pumps like this Waller that we've got behind us, they actually know what pressures coming off 'em and they can actually turn themselves down automatically which saves you energy. But even with that function there it's never going to fully switch itself off.

Passive Cooling Strategies

Go to our Natural Building Blog where we answer questions. http://naturalbuildingblog.com Today I want to talk about passive cooling strategies for keeping your home cool in hot climates. This is a very hot climate and yet our earthbag roundhouse is about 15 degrees Fahrenheit cooler inside than out. So 15 degrees Fahrenheit, 8 degrees Celsius temperature difference with no mechanical cooling systems. No air conditioners, no fans, no anything. It's just passive strategies, natural strategies for keeping the home cool without the use of machinery or electricity. So we'll discuss about 11 different strategies that you can use. They're all very low cost and simple. The first one is the color of your wall -- your exterior wall. You want the walls to have a light color so they reflect the sunlight. One of the most important things is to have wide roof overhangs. This is about 4 feet, a little over one meter. So the sun almost never hits the wall. Because they're high mass walls, if the sun hit the walls frequently, that mass would heat up and eventually that heat would transfer inside. So we keep the sun off the walls as much as possible. Another important strategy is windows. We have casement windows that swing open and catch the prevailing breezes. So the breezes come from this way and these are like a scoop -- a wind scoop -- to pull the wind into the roundhouse. We also have windows on all sides of the house so the breeze is always blowing through. If you look up above the window, we have screened openings above the windows that keep insects out, but let hot air escape this way. And I don't know if you can see it, you might want to come closer. Above the bond beam is a gap of a few inches. In between the rafters there's a gap where hot air can escape. So the hot air is rising and it goes out the top. Also we use thatch roofing and some air passes through the thatch. We also have one of these screened openings above the door as a transom. Let's go inside and I'll show you the earth coupled floor. This is our earth coupled floor right here. What that means is the floor -- the high mass floor -- in this case concrete, but it could be tamped earth, stone, CEBs, brick, recycled brick, whatever. The floor is in direct contact with the earth underneath with a moisture barrier to prevent wicking of moisture. So the floor is absorbing the coolness of the earth. It's very cool, surprisingly cool even in this hot climate where you can start sweating in just a few minutes. So this is surprisingly cool. We also have earthen plaster on the inside. All that mass and this mass partition wall all absorb the coolness of the earth -- the coolness coming up from the earth. And the breezes help all the hot air escape. So the temperature inside stays the same night and day. You don't need an air conditioner or even a fan. It's surprisingly comfortable in here. Some other strategies, you want to look up and see the high ceiling. So there's plenty of space for hot air to rise and escape. There you can see the gap above the bond beam to improve ventilation. The last strategy I'm going to talk about is vegetation -- using plants to keep the building cool. Here we've used a mango tree on the hot southwest side of the house. That's the hottest direction. We have different plants here. So the sun, as you can see, almost never hits the house directiy. And also we have a very large tree above here that protects and shades the house through most of the day. Again, these are all simple, low cost strategies that anyone can do. Very low cost, very simple. You can save a lot of money on energy bills and also help the environment.

Now if it goes anywhere below kind of half a bar, then you know that you've got a problem and obviously if it's constantly going down all the time or that recently you're topping it up using a filling loop like then you'll know that you've definitely got a problem. Now there's a few things that can cause this and inside a heating system, the cold water atoms and On a pressurized system, instead of having the expansion pipe, you have what's called an expansion vessel. How they work is very simple. It's very difficult to compress water and so therefore you have an expansion vessel with a rubber diaphragm and on one side of the diaphragm you have compressed air that's usually compressed to one or one and a half bar and on the other side you have your heating system water. So as that water heats up and expands, it gets more and more happy, it can expand into the easily compressed air without letting air into the heating system because there's a rubber diaphragm in the way. So make sure that your heating system is nice and full of water at all times, you have a filling loop that fills up the cold water from the cold water main system and make sure that everything's okay. So now you've got a basic idea about how a pressurized heating system works. Let's look at problem number one that could cause a pressure drop. Firstly and most obviously of all, you could have a leak on your heating system somewhere. When it comes to finding leaks, the best thing to do is pop around all the radiator valves for a start and just make sure there's no leaks on them. Make sure you lift up the heads as well to make sure that there's no weep on top of the valves. Make sure that the compression fittings on each side of the radiator valves are nice and tight and there's no water anywhere. Just go around, run around with your hands and make sure that you've got no leaks there at all. That's number one on the list. Try and stop the leaks. If you find that you can't find any leaks anywhere, always look out for sort of dark brown patches on the ceiling. They can indicate leaks. After that, you're into the gnarly world of pulling up floorboards and having a look under the floor. Things like that can get pretty horrible. So that's number one. You might actually have a leak on your heating system. Number two, most modern combi boilers have what's called automatic air vents on them. Now they're great for when it comes to venting a system out. Everything gets vented automatically and it works brilliantly. But they can cause problems if the heating system hasn't got an adequate amount of inhibitor in it or if the pump setting is set too high for the speed. Let's go through both of those quickly now. What an inhibitor does is stops the water from reacting with the inside of the radiators and the inside of the components of the heating system itself. If that's not in there, you've got normal water going up against the insides of a radiator and causing horrible things to happen. Many, many months ago I started an experiment with two jars just like this, one with inhibitor in it and one with just water in it and then popped about 10 nails in each and I think you can see the difference. If I just pop these down so you can have a closer look at them, you can see the different state in the nails and if inhibitor is not inside your radiators, that's exactly what's gonna happen to the inside. Now, another byproduct of this is not just sludge and rust that goes around and stops a heating system from working properly, it's also hydrogen and other gases. What happens is the hydrogen can work its way around to an automatic air vent and the automatic air vent's just doing it's job, it's just sitting there having a nice chilled out day, a little bit of gas comes along and it lets it out quite happily, but what happens then is the pressure drops down on your boiler.

How to cool your house on the cheap

Hi guys, I had a couple of requests to show this neat trick I have of keeping the house cool. first, some theory. Everywhere the sun hits, it gets hot, which is why closing your blinds to keep the sun out is helpful. You'll notice the wall still getting really hot, though, because the sun is still hitting it. The same heat buildup is happening in your attic, although you might not realize it. The heat builds up in the attic, and especially if you live in an older house with poor insulation like I do, the heat transfers down through the ceiling into the house, making things really hot. So if you could push air into the attic, it could cool the attic, which would keep the house from getting too hot. If you open a window on the cool side of the house, you can help cool things even further. The hot air leaves the attic via vents under the eavestroughs or on the roof. This happens normally, but you can help force airflow to go faster using this trick. So where can you find a place to push air into the attic? Well, in my house, it's right in the hallway. sometimes attic access will be in hallway, or bedroom, or closet; if you don't know where yours is, you'll have to look around, but you probably have one. It's usually pretty easy to get into the attic; just get a stepladder and push the board up. Warning; if you do this on a hot day, it'll be crazy hot in the attic. Next you need a box fan. These are pretty cheap from Walmart or the hardware store. Mine comes with a switch with 3 different settings. However, if you were to try fit the box fan into the space, you'll likely find that it doesn't work; the space is too large for the box fan. What I had to do is take some scraps of wood and build an inset. It's pretty flimsy; just held together with staples; but it doesn't need to carry a lot of weight. I also put a bit of weather stripping on it to keep the air from escaping too much. So you put the insert in, and then the fan. Remember that you can rotate it to get it to fit the now-tight space. You'll need to find a plug for the fan. Take a look around in your attic; often there;s an outlet, and you can use a short extension cord to get the power to the fan. And that's all there's to it. in the coming weeks, if there's a heat wave coming, just climb on a chair or stepstool, turn on the fan, and start cooling down your attic! Although this approach isn't as effective as Air Conditioning, it's a fraction of the cost and uses way less electricity. Thanks for watching! Keep cool! don't forget to subscribe! All of this is to be done according to the U.S. Department of Energy's recommended R-Values for attic insulation in the region, which in Ohio is between R-49 and R-60. That method establishes the attic floor as thermal boundary of the building envelope. The problem with this method is that the attic remains unconditioned, therefore temperatures change drastically as the seasons change. The attic is very cold when it is cold outside, and on hot summer days it can reach temperatures as high as 140 degrees! If you have uninsulated air ducts running through such a hostile environment, the air that you paid to heat and cool is loosing or gaining temperature as it passes through the attic and is released into the rest of your home. An alternative way to insulate the attic, is to make the attic a part of the conditioned space in your home. That means making the attic as cool as possible during summertime and as warm as possible during wintertime. To accomplish this, Dr. Energy Saver recommends the SuperAttic System. In this approach, a high R-Value, 4-inch thick, and foil lined rigid foam insulation board, called SilverGlo, is fastened to the underside of the roof, leaving the soffit and ridge vents unobstructed so that the roof can be vented. The SilverGlo boards are then taped and sealed to prevent air leakage. This process establishes the underside of the roof as the thermal boundary of the house. The insulation will prevent heat conduction in or out of the attic. The radiant barrier on both sides of the SilverGlo will reflect heat back to the outside on hot days, and to the inside on cold days. An attic insulated with the SuperAttic System has a temperature very similar to the temperature of the living areas of your home. Welcome to today's plumberparts.co.uk video today we're gonna look at expansion vessels on heating systems. What I'm gonna do for today is we're gonna cut apart an expansion vessel we're gonna actually have a look inside it and see what's inside one of these things, then we're just gonna have a quick look at where they are in a pressurised system how they work, what they do. And love like that. Anyway people I hope you enjoy today's video and remember hold tight! We have an expansion vessel is got water on this side, heating system water on this side and on this side here you've got compressed air. The cold water when heated up on the boiler the molecules start to move more this is basic science and because they move more the volume of water expands. And so you need an expansion vessel to take up that expansion on a sealed system. Now usually if you had an open vented system you have an expansion part that goes up in a crook into the top of your tank, the F&E tank. Because you don't have that here there's no expansion pipe you need to use this to take the expansion. You cannot compress water it's really really difficult but you can compress air so say you've got one bar of water here cold and you've got 1 1/2 bar pressurised air on this side. The water here when the boiler cuts in comes on will slowly heat up, slowly heat up and you'll be able to watch the pressure gauge on the heating system go up and up and up from one bar, gets to 1 1/2 bar it starts to push into here, pushing this air and compressing down and then it should just hover about and be very happy. The problem is that a lot of the time these do go wrong and the main problem for that is the divide between the water and the air usually have a thick rubber diaphragm and it is effectively a moving part. And moving parts always prone to going wrong. So what we're gonna do is cut this open and have a look in here. So you get a good idea of actually what's inside one of these and then when I've done that I be able to show you one on a system and also give you a quick drawing about actually where they fit in the system. People because we used the grinder today we do have to wear personal protective equipment. Make sure you wear a box, a thigh pad and an inner thigh pad, pants, protective gloves, a helmet and of course eye protection. Now we're ready to go. In all honesty though, being serious is really important when you're doing any kind of grinder, any work really where your eyes might be in danger to wear protection for your eyes and in a minute when I put 'em back on wear gloves to protect yourself. If you ever need to recharge the air this is where you'll do it. This is a schrader valve these are the same sort of valves that go on bike tyres. If you've got a problem with your expansion vessel symptom being that the pressure goes right up or sometimes the high pressure relief valve dumps pop your finger on here if no air comes out try and re-pressurize it and see if it work. If you leave your finger in here for a long time and water starts to come out you then know that the rubber diaphragm is gone in it. Let's get grinding. So now we've taken the side off we can actually see the two different sides, now here we've got our rubber diaphragm what's happened is in the past that has basically broken so the mitre this is the actual expansion vessel when it's actually in an unpressurized state. So the system pressure is probably about one bar and it's cold. Now this area here you can see in front of us is air it's full of compressed air. At the bottom we've got a small layer and this side we got water. Now as the system heats up the water expands and pushes up into the air that we can pressurise we can compress air. So that pushes up so when it's at a fully pressured state our diaphragm will be up here. Now the problem is that these do fail as I said it's kind of a moving part and when they do fail as you can see we've got loads of heating system waters on the air so it shouldn't be there. Now that fluctuation in change happens constantly throughout a heating system's running cycle. As I said you can re-pressurize the air at the top of the Schrader valve and do it like that. If you've got any problems and also the schrader valve is a really good way of figurin' out if there's anything wrong. Now I'll give you a quick idea about how these schematically fit onto a heating system. So let's have a quick look at how these systems work. We'll have our boiler, our pump, radiators and then back to the boiler.

After seeing the concept, I couldn't find any information anywhere on the internet or in libraries about arc furnace experiments, so I experimented on my own until achieving these results. Project History & More Info: I made a homemade stick welder from old microwave parts ( and experimented with it's power by sparking an arc between two carbon electrodes I pulled out of a “heavy duty” lantern battery. Although I haven't verified it, I believe any stick welder can be used to power the mini arc furnace, and for most hobbyists, that would definitely be the easier and safer way to go. I just don't own a welder, so I used the one I made instead. You can get refractory brick from major hardware stores online, but to find something local, I did a Google search for “refractory materials” in my city. I called a couple of local companies and asked if they'd sell to the general public, and most did. At their warehouse, I identified the 3” x 4.5” x 9” Alumina-Silica Bricks as the kind I needed, which are extremely lightweight, and capable of withstanding temperatures used in steel working. Most local refractory suppliers will only sell the bricks in cases, but luckily they had an open case in the shop, and sold me a single brick for $6. However, I later went back and got a case of 10 for about $33, making the cost of each brick around $3.30. I found the furnace can be powered off 120v mains power by center tapping the arc welder unit, however it performs tremendously better on 240v without any modifications. Impressively I didn't even need to use The “Scariac” ( to ballast it. In all my experimenting, it worked just fine on a 20 amp breaker by plugging it in and sparking the arc. A commercial welder should give your circuit breaker the same electrical protection because it will limit the current that can be drawn. The longest I've run the unit continuously is around 3-4 minutes, and the electrodes get so hot at that point they can seriously burn your hands, or melt your gloves. I realize it would be easy to modify them to have insulating handles and run it longer, however I believe that's beyond the scope of this project, and there is good risk that the insulation on the cables would start melting and the system would self destruct. I designed the furnace so you can easily make two of them from one brick, and you'll see how I made them in the project video, “How To Make The Mini Arc Furnace”. Rock Energy Systems Heats Up the Market

After Rock Energy Systems, formerly Lanair Holdings LLC, purchased its largest competitor, it decided to move the manufacturing operations of the newly acquired business to Wisconsin from Pennsylvania. With no experience in relocating a business, Rock Energy Systems turned to the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership for assistance as it began to consider ways to integrate Lancaster, Pa.-based Clean Burn Inc., a niche manufacturer of waste oil furnaces and boilers, into its existing business. Rock Energy targeted Clean Burn for its leading market position and strong distribution network as a means of complementing its existing products. The move to buy Clean Burn came a short time after Rock Energy bought the assets of Lanair, which also produces waste oil heaters. "WMEP was able to bring a resource to the table that had experience in acquisitions and in moving and integrating companies and really guided our efforts. The talent that WMEP brought to the table was critical for us achieving what we were able to achieve," Rock Energy president and chief executive officer Barry Brandt said. "There really was no option for failure. WMEP really helped us stay focused, stay on track, asked really good questions and challenged us in many ways as we were moving down the path." Based in Janesville, Rock Energy Systems has 55 employees, about 30 of which were added in Wisconsin following the Clean Burn deal. Rock Energy specializes in Environmental Protection Agency-approved and Underwriter Laboratories-listed waste oil heaters, sold under the Clean Burn and Lanair brand names. The waste oil heaters allow oil removed from cars, trucks and heavy equipment to be placed in a tank and used for to heat structures during colder periods of the year. In addition to shifting Clean Burn's operations to Wisconsin, Rock Energy also brought back in house much of the manufacturing that Clean Burn had outsourced prior to being acquired. WMEP also provided Rock Energy with marketing assistance through its partner organization Roundhouse Marketing in Verona. "At one point we had just been buying a leads list of 100,000 names. It was basically just throwing darts and not knowing if we were actually hitting our target customer," said Tom Francois, national sales manager for Rock Energy. "Roundhouse qualified and refined that and narrowed that list down. Now, we can look at different markets and different areas of the country. We are seeing better results." As a result, Rock Energy decreased its spending on direct mail by 25 percent, according to Francois. "I'm a big believer in WMEP. The resources that they bring to the table in all the different disciplines, from manufacturing to marketing, even the transition resource used in helping us move the business, was unexpected," Brandt said. Rock Energy didn't want to waste time in an exhaustive search for marketing assistance. "I could just go to the WMPE folks and they could point me in the right direction. They have lots of contacts throughout the state," Brandt said. Rock Energy plans to continue to use WMEP's services moving forward, Brandt said.

Thorium is an abundant material currently disposed of as waste. It is found in coal ash piles and mine tailings. A single Rare Earths mine could produce enough Thorium byproduct to power the entire planet. To do so requires a very different nuclear reactor than the kinds we use today. Not one that uses solid fuel rods, but a reactor in which the fuel is kept in a liquid state. Not one that uses pressurized water as a coolant, but a reactor that uses extremely stable molten salts. The full description of one such reactor is: 2-Fluid, Thermal-Spectrum, Molten-Salt Breeder Reactor equipped with a chemical fuel salt treatment module. Such a reactor was conceived of decades ago, as documented in the book "Fluid Fuel Reactors" [1958]. Or, simply "LFTR" (Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor) as proposed by Flibe Energy's Kirk Sorensen... a modern redesign of the 2-Fluid, thermal-spectrum, MSBR concept. http://Flibe-Energy.com/ Since 2011 (the year Flibe Energy was founded), legislators asking questions about Thorium have had their queries answered as if such a reactor design did not exist. NNL [UK] and OECD [NEA] reports on the Thorium Fuel Cycle did not explore the implications of this reactor, and dismiss thorium based on challenges and mediocre performance found in other reactor designs. For example, other options include a "Fast-Spectrum Molten-Salt Reactor". Worth pursuing, certainly, but requires more fissile inventory than LFTR... approximately 5x as much. (Fissile inventory is specifically mentioned as a concern by OECD's thorium report.) And assuming the challenges of a fast-spectrum MSR can be met... both natural Uranium and natural Thorium can both be fully consumed as fuel in a fast-spectrum reactor. That is where Thorium is dismissed as only "4x as common as Uranium" (fast-spectrum usage) rather than "400x as common as U-235" (thermal-spectrum usage). Thorium's advantages: both thermal-spectrum breeding and unique chemical properties, are taken full advantage of only by LFTR style reactors. When evaluated in any other reactor, depending on that reactor, Uranium can be as attractive, more attractive, or Uranium can be the only viable option. For example: Shippingport. Cited as an example of a "Thorium Reactor" by Dr. Lyons, it was NEVER intended to be economical, and features no advantages of LFTR. It was a solid-fuel reactor, and so operated at low-temperature, had no on-line chemical reprocessing, used high-pressure water coolant, used fuel as inefficiently as every other solid-fuel reactor, and had to be shut down every time it was refueled. 2 of its 3 fuel loads were Enriched Uranium. It was -a- Reactor capable of consuming Thorium and demonstrated only that it was possible... it was not -THE- Thorium Reactor. How to make a water heater with big plastic (PET) bottles. Inside each bottle there is a 3.5 meteres piece of 4 mm drip watering tubing. This heater takes advantage of the greenhouse effect inside the bottles. It is like the heat inside a car in the sun in summer. Since when the circuit is stopped the water heats more inside the tubing it woul be a good idea to use a timer with i. e. 1 minute ON and 1 minute OFF. This also would protect the pump motor from excessive heating. With a small water pump the water is cycled and the temperature rises. It would be better to use a 12 volt DC motor water pump connected to several solar cells. You can also try to paste a sheet of aluminum foil in order to concentrate more heat inside the bottles. The solar water heater is scalable, so you can connect more bottles and groups of bottles in order to heat a swimming pool.

This power distribution system provides operators the ability to safely tap into commonly found 240VAC power from a variety of sources including generators and direct grid power. This portable spiderbox is suitable for outdoor applications. The MDC-240-100MB-8X120 temporary power distribution system provides a safe and reliable way for operators in industrial settings to tap into and utilize power sources independently of the work area. This unit provides an effective power distribution system for operators performing plant turnarounds, maintenance and cleaning in hazardous areas, equipment installations and repairs, and any activities requiring an alternative to native power sources. This portable transformer is designed to operate with 240V 60hz which it then steps down to 120 VAC. The power distribution system on this portable substation makes 120VAC available via eight 20A, 120V GFCI protected 5-20 duplex receptacles with weatherproof covers. 10' of #6/4 Type-W line in power cord is included to connect the substation to a primary 240V primary power supply. This power distribution system conforms to UL 508A. The main load center is protected by a 100 amp load center with main breaker for circuit protection. 120V line out protection is provided by eight 20amp, 125 Volt, 1 pole breakers. Connection for 120V is through receptacles mounted on the side of the load center. Receptacles include eight 5-20 120v, GFCI waterproof duplex receptacles. The load center is mounted within NEMA 3R enclosure. The transformer and load center/distribution assembly is mounted to a standard upright steel dolly cart style frame resulting in an extremely stable, durable, and mobile power distribution platform. Two run-flat tires and a cart style mounting platform provides easier substation mobility. This temporary power distribution solution can be modified to meet the needs of job-site receptacle requirements. Units are available up to 150kva, and can be equipped with skids or trailer mounted. Applications: This power distribution system is NEMA 3R rated and ideal for indoor/outdoor use and applications including but not limited to; construction sites, plant maintenance, plant turnarounds, hazardous location operations, shows, exhibits, and shipyard operations.
