Its unwavering commitment to the use of pharmaceutical drugs I see as a real problem. I think adverse drug reactions are far and away the leading category of doctor-caused disease; the costs of pharmaceutical drugs are a major reason why healthcare costs are out of control. There are other ways of treating many common conditions that don’t involve giving pharmaceuticals. There are mind-body interventions, there are dietary adjustments, other lifestyle measures that can all be tried before you prescribe a pharmaceutical drug – but that’s just one example. I think another root problem is that our healthcare system at the moment, it’s really a disease management system that we’re intervening an established disease. We’re not really preventing disease, we’re not teaching people how to be healthy, and we’re not promoting healthy lifestyle and healthy behavior. The irony is that Americans spend more per capita than anybody else but we’re not really healthier. It’s worse than that, I mean, we spend more per capita by a long shot on healthcare and by any measure of health outcomes we’re at or near the bottom. Clearly, something is wrong with that picture. We’re spending more and have less and less to show for it. So I think the obvious conclusion is, we’re spending our healthcare dollars in wrong ways. Specifically, we’re spending them on, as I said, intervention and established disease rather than towards preventing disease in the first place. Is it the profit motive, the fact that treating diseases is profitable if you have a pharmaceutical-based system? I think that there’s no question at the moment there are many vested interests that are making out from the present system and they will be very resistant to change, but the whole system is going down so at some point that will all have to change.

Thank you for watching **Useful Information** Vitamins And Minerals For Emotional Balance Deficiencies of vitamins and trace minerals have been reported in people with mood disorders, and these days, deficiencies are widespread. Modern, industrial, processed food does not give our bodies the protective nutrients – especially, vitamins and minerals – needed for optimal physical and mental health, and emotional balance. Correcting the deficiencies with dietary supplements sometimes helps. Most frequently cited as a good candidate for supplementation is the B-complex of vitamins, a group of water-soluble compounds that the body cannot store and needs constantly for optimum metabolism. Its need for them is increased by stress, erratic diets, use of drugs and alcohol, smoking, illness, shift work, and demanding travel. In short, there is no reason not to take the whole complex of B-vitamins in supplement form, but also no reason to take them apart from a daily multivitamin/multimineral supplement. Allow Dr. Weil to emphasize: Dietary supplements are not the whole answer, as they are not substitutes for good diets. At best, they are partial representations of the full spectrum of protective elements in whole foods. But they are good insurance against gaps in the diet. Dr. Weil grows a lot of his own food in rich, organic soil, prepares it himself, and is thoughtful about what he eats. He also takes daily supplements including a good multivitamin/multimineral and advises you to do so, too, because he considers it another good and safe measure to optimize emotional well-being. Here’s the “antioxidant cocktail” Dr. Weil recommends for emotional balance physical and mental health: Vitamin C. Aim for 200 milligrams per day. Vitamin E. Most adults should limit their daily supplement intake of vitamin E to 100-200 IU (in the form of mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols). Selenium. Aim for 100-200 micrograms per day. Mixed Carotenoids. Aim for a daily intake of 10,000-15,000 IU. Antioxidants. A convenient way to get the recommended amounts of antioxidants is to take them as part of a daily multivitamin/multimineral supplement. The multivitamin should not contain iron (unless you are a female with regular menstrual periods). It should not include preformed vitamin A (retinol), as well. It is best to take these supplements with your largest meal of the day. Some other measures to consider: Fish Oil. Dr. Weil suggests eating oily fish at least twice weekly, but if you don’t, consider a fish oil supplement. Look for one in liquid or capsule form (2-3 grams a day of a product containing both EPA and DHA). Also choose molecularly distilled products that are certified to be free of heavy metals and other contaminants. Low-Dose Aspirin Therapy. This may be something to discuss with your physician. Generally it is one to two baby aspirins per day (81 or 162 milligrams). Anti-Inflammatory Spices. Eat both ginger and turmeric regularly; if you do not, consider supplemental forms of these spices. CoQ10. Add this to your daily regimen – choose a softgel with 60 to 100 milligrams and take with your largest meal of the day. Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA). If you are prone to metabolic syndrome, take alpha-lipoic acid, 100 to 400 milligrams a day.

The most important question is the last, i.e. can we extrapolate the data from the North American experience to Australia and the answer to this is clearly, no. The standards and regulations in the US are vastly different to the highly regulated programs in Australia. Basically, North American supplements are made to food standards with much less rigorous testing whereas Australian supplements are made to pharmaceutical grade. In conclusion, the Four Corners Program was very interesting and well done and did expose problems and concerns for the North American supplement industry but the information is completely irrelevant and misleading when you objectively examine well conducted clinical trials using high quality supplements even from the Northern Hemisphere and there is no doubt that the Australian and New Zealand supplement industry make much better quality, pharmaceutical grade supplements and therefore the Four Corners information is irrelevant to Australia. Three components are covered in this video: (1) Why is vitamin D important? (2) How much do you need? (3) Resources (1) Why is vitamin D important? Vitamin D is vital to the immune system and its production in the human body is initiated when UVB sunlight makes contact with the skin. The so called 'flu season' is actually 'less sunlight season'. Vitamin is a critical component for the body to produce antimicrobial peptides which are a major immediate defense mechanism of the innate immune system. So in essence, no lower sunlight exposure mean, lower vitamin D, and finally lower antimicrobial peptide product. This results in a weaker immune system during the critical winter months. (2) How much do you need? There is no simple answer to this question. Each person will have their unique need. The first important step to do is to have a blood test performed to assess your current vitamin D levels. The next step is discuss with your doctor what your results mean and how much you may or may not need to take through supplements or diet. The traditional scale ranges between 30 - 100ng/mL (nanograms per millileter). More naturopathic ranges are between 40 and 60 ng/mL or 50 - 80 nb/mL. A vast majority of people are deficient (have less than 30 ng/mL). Vitamin D is typically packaged in dosages referred to as International Units (IU). On average for every 1000 IU's the vitamin D blood levels may be raised about 10ng/mL. There are many factors that effect overall vitamin D levels that will need to be disgust with your doctor. What Is Vitamin D? Why Is Vitamin D Necessary? Vitamin D Supplements And Foods. What Is Vitamin D? Vitamin D, often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin,” is actually a fat-soluble hormone that the body can synthesize naturally. There are several forms, including two that are important to humans: D2 and D3. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is synthesized by plants, and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is synthesized by humans when skin is exposed to ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays from sunlight. The active form of the vitamin is calcitriol, synthesized from either D2 or D3 in the kidneys. Vitamin D helps to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Why Is Vitamin D Necessary? Vitamin D assists in the absorption of calcium and promotes bone mineralization, which may prevent or slow the progression of osteoporosis. It also helps to strengthen the immune system and protect against a number of serious diseases, including rickets and osteomalacia. Research suggests vitamin D may also provide protection from hypertension, psoriasis, several autoimmune diseases (including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis), and reduce the incidence of fractured bones. In addition, growing evidence has demonstrated its important role in defending against cancer (studies link a deficiency of vitamin D to as many as 18 different cancers). What Are The Signs Of A Deficiency? Deficiencies of vitamin D are common, especially in industrialized countries in northern latitudes, where sun exposure is typically infrequent. Low levels of vitamin D may be indicated by porous bones, weak muscles and easy fracturing. How Much Vitamin D Should Adults Take? According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the daily Adequate Intake (AI) for adults is 5 mcg (200 IU) daily for males, female, and pregnant/lactating women under the age of 50. People 50 to 70 years old should get 10 mcg daily (400 IU) daily, and those over 70 should get 15 mcg daily (600 IU). Based on recent research, Dr. Weil recommends 2,000 IU of vitamin D per day. Look for supplements that provide D3 (cholecalciferol) rather than D2 (ergocalciferol). Anyone with vitamin D deficiencies should discuss intake levels with his or her physician. How Much Vitamin D Should Children Take? According to the NIH, AI for children from birth until 5 years of age should take 5 mcg per day (200 IU). What Are Some Vitamin D Foods? It isn’t easy to get enough vitamin D from your diet. While fortified vitamin D foods such as milk and cereals are available, most provide vitamin D2, a form which is much less well utilized by the body than D3. Good dietary sources include fortified foods, eggs, salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines. Since sunlight causes our bodies to make vitamin D, daily exposure is helpful. A helpful rule: estimate the amount of time it would take for your skin to turn pink – or slightly, but noticeably darker – in the sun. Then reduce that time by 50 percent if you have fair skin, 25 percent for darker skin, and get that amount of exposure between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. two to three times per week. Are There Any Risks Associated With Too Much Vitamin D? No adverse effects have been seen with supplemental vitamin D intakes up to 10,000 IU daily. Exposing the face and hands to roughly 10 minutes of direct sunlight daily is also quite safe and a good way to boost vitamin D.
