High School Science Teacher Vlog #2 | Curriculum Design: Backward Planning

11:46
Join me as I discuss my poor curriculum design process as a new teacher and how I eventually developed those skills; which helped me later on in my career (as a district instructional specialist and campus assistant principal). Subscribe, and Bond with James, so that you don't miss updates! _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Purchase the book, Understanding by Design, here: http://astore.amazon.com/bondwithjames-20/detail/1416600353 Facebook Group: Secondary Science Teacher PLC ***Security clearance is required as the group is for secondary science teachers only*** http://bit.ly/2s0E6Dz _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ BOND WITH ME ON MY OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS: (@bondwithjames for all of them) - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/bondwithjames - Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bondwithjames - Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/bondwithjames - TeachersPayTeachers https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/store/bond-with-james _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Additional insight: If you are unfamiliar with the Backward Design process or wish to advance your career as an instructional leader (administrator, department chair, or instructional coach/specialist), then I recommend reading the book, Understanding by Design, by Wiggins and McTighe. Furthermore, the framework serves as an excellent curriculum model to assist you in the development of your yearly curriculum. The book goes into much more detail than what I shared in the video. For example, the book describes how teachers should unpack (and repack) their learning standards. It also talks about mistakes of curriculum development - coverage and activity-oriented design; which is referred to as the "twin sins" of traditional curriculum design. While my subject area is science, the book is also packed with K-12 curriculum desing and lesson plan ideas. It also includes examples and a few templates (additional templates are available in supplementary UbD resources). UbD is a great book for those interested in creating lessons (their own or for others) and highlights several key ideas in regard to the art of teaching (and developing pedagogy).

Teaching Visual Literacy: Media Studies Before the Internet

01:30
I thought I'd share this recently rediscovered relic from my early days as a teacher. Back in the late 1970's / early 1980’s I started teaching a high school "Media Studies" class. (Pittsford-Sutherland HS, Rochester NY). It was one semester, social studies elective that examined the impact of media on society (mainly TV - and all very McLuhan). Duane Sherwood, our building edtech specialist, was inspired by early TV pioneer, Ernie Kovacs to shoot this 1 minute video. I used it after my first few introductory lessons. That day, instead of their teacher, my students found a TV / recorder in front of the class. The sign instructed them to "watch this video." The shot took "forever" to set up. I attribute my bad acting to sitting sideways and trying to keep a straight face. It's just too bad I wore red flannel and khakis that day.... Adapting Persuasive Message Skills to Social Media

04:25
What's New in Teaching Business Communication? Adapting Persuasive Message Skills to Social Media - Expert Speaker: Courtland Bovee The AIDA model and similar approaches have been successful with marketing and sales messages for decades, but in the social media landscape, consumers are more apt to look for product information from other consumers, not the companies marketing those products. Consequently, today's business communicators need new skills to encourage and participate in these online conversations. Following these guidelines will help students adapt what they're learning in the course to the new realities of promotional communication. How Social Media and Electronic Communication Are Revolutionizing Business Communication, 2016

11:08
How Social Media and Electronic Communication Are Revolutionizing Business Communication, Updated Expert Speaker: Courtland Bovee, one of America's leading instructors in clear and effective communication, coauthors (with John Thill) the world's leading textbooks in business communication. Professor Bovee's specialty is social media and electronic communication. In this video update, Courtland Bovee explains that social media isn't a fad. It's a fundamental shift in the way we're communicating. But not only is the communication model changing, what is being taught in a typical business communication course should be changing, too. This video answers these important questions: (1) What's the difference between social media and electronic communication?, (2) How is social media and electronic communication changing how we communicate?, and (3) What resources are available for teaching social media and electronic communication? After you've watched this video, visit the sites below for additional information that will make your teaching easier and more effective. 'You Are Your Brand:' Using Social Media to Find a Job

04:00
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Today we share some ideas for job hunters about presenting yourself online. Ben Kirshner is chief executive of a New York company he started in two thousand four. Elite SEM, or search engine marketing, has about twenty-five employees. Many companies use headhunters -- recruiting services that find workers for high-paying positions. But Mr. Kirshner says that would cost him probably ten to fifteen thousand dollars to find a one hundred fifty thousand dollar a year employee. He saves money by advertising jobs online and using social media. Sometimes finding the right person this way can take time. But recently Mr. Kirshner posted a job on the advertising site Craigslist. He says he had one hundred fifty good candidates within four hours. He says his company does not use sites that offer to search the Web for information about job candidates. His company does that itself. Social networks and other websites can provide a lot of details about people's lives. As Ben Kirshner points out, that may even include personal information that employment laws prevent employers from asking. He says: "Things we are not legally allowed to ask in an interview, we can find because they're publicly displaying it on the social networks." Leslie Stevenson directs the Career Development Center at the University of Richmond in Virginia. For young job-seekers, she says, the barrier between public and private is changing. She says: "In the past two years, candidates are not seeing social media as a place that we have to keep private from prospective employers but as a tool that will assist in my search." To do that, job-seekers need to carefully develop their online image. Ben Kirshner says an important part of that is managing public and private details on social media. He says: "You are your brand. So everything you do online reflects who you are personally and professionally." He thinks a willingness to share experiences and skills will lead to a more open workplace. Even the kinds of links you share with other people on Facebook or other sites are part of your image. Image is one thing. But you also need skills. And career specialist Leslie Stevenson says that includes the "soft skills" that help communicate in the workplace and with potential clients. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal. You can find last week's report about finding a job online at voaspecialenglish.com. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 13May2011)

School Spotlight: Fernbrook Elementary

03:45
Fernbrook Elementary in Maple Grove is one of the larger elementary schools in the Osseo School District. It's larger size is one of the reasons building a sense of community is top priority at this school. The way Fernbrook Principal Todd Tischer sees it, his elementary school is a big family. "With 850 students, people sometimes walk in and think, oh my gosh, it's such a big school, but we try and make it a small, connected, warm, caring, family," said Tischer. 850 students, prekindergarten through fifth grade, consider Fernbrook Elementary their home. And as head of this school household, Principal Tischer insists joy and creativity should lead the way in learning not test scores. "We know that children are more than just test scores, so our focus has been on teaching the whole child and enriching their lives and pushing with creativity and getting them to do their very best work," said Tischer. Creativity and critical thinking whirl together in the school's Maker Space. It's a room where hands-on exploration and problem solving skills are encouraged, and students have a chance to do a number of different creative activities. "Every child has an opportunity to come in here at least once during the school year during their recess time," said Kim LeClaire, talented and gifted specialist. "They get to explore and make choices, whether they like to build things, use technology, take apart some technology, play on a Lego wall, build a marble run, pretty much the sky is the limit." Fourth grade student Sophie Kollodge loves working on the circuit board in the Maker Space. It's a project where troubleshooting skills are required. "There's always mistakes in this, so we learn by our mistakes and then our goal is eventually finding out what we did wrong," said Kollodge. There's a joy of reading and learning on display in the school's media center, especially each year when the library is transformed into a book theme that comes to life. One year the theme was "Wizard of Oz," another year it was "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." "This is a way to celebrate classic literature, and kind of re-immerse our kids in classic literature, and bring it to light," said Kim Haugo, library media specialist. "When they [students] walk in and see the chocolate fountain from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" in the middle of the media center with large candy hanging from the ceiling, they just can't believe it." Remember the idea of family at this school? Here's a great example: every two years, teachers and staff dress up for a variety show that raises money for Fernbrook families in crisis. "We've had families who've experience fire, families who have experienced a flood, families who've experienced homelessness, each year it seems to be something different," said Amy Fouquette, school counselor. Thank you letters to the school's caring committee show how much the emergency funds are appreciated. "We can now afford food on our table and Christmas for our children" said one note. "These kids know, they know what community service is," said Carol Joelson, the school's volunteer coordinator. Each spring, a community service project brings the whole school out to the Maple Grove High School track to walk for a cure. Since 2001, the school has raised a staggering amount for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. "Our grand total is $152,044 and 28 cents," said Joelson. More than $152,000 in giving. There's no test score for that, but this school believes they're on the right track. "It's harder to measure compassion and kindness, and caring for one another, but that's essential to developing human beings who are going to contribute to our community in the future," said Tischer. The school also does cross-grade level activities so students build connections and know the names of kids in different grades. Tischer also believes it's important for every student to know that any adult in the school should be considered a teacher, able to help and support. Reviews From The Classroom Teaching is not an easy task. There are standards to be met. Data and information to be collected, assessed and shared. Prodigious efforts made to help students excel in an era of information overload. In districts across the county, students, teachers and administrators are using the Pulse smartpen to transform the learning experience. Students are better equipped to actively learn and engage in the classroom. Teachers can create more effective lesson plans and instruction. Administrators benefit from more effective method for data collection and knowledge sharing. It really changes the way I teach.
