High School Science Teacher Vlog #2 | Curriculum Design: Backward Planning

Join me as I discuss my poor curriculum design process as a new teacher and how I eventually developed those skills; which helped me later on in my career (as a district instructional specialist and campus assistant principal). Subscribe, and Bond with James, so that you don't miss updates! _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Purchase the book, Understanding by Design, here: http://astore.amazon.com/bondwithjames-20/detail/1416600353 Facebook Group: Secondary Science Teacher PLC ***Security clearance is required as the group is for secondary science teachers only*** http://bit.ly/2s0E6Dz _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ BOND WITH ME ON MY OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS: (@bondwithjames for all of them) - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/bondwithjames - Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bondwithjames - Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/bondwithjames - TeachersPayTeachers https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/store/bond-with-james _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Additional insight: If you are unfamiliar with the Backward Design process or wish to advance your career as an instructional leader (administrator, department chair, or instructional coach/specialist), then I recommend reading the book, Understanding by Design, by Wiggins and McTighe. Furthermore, the framework serves as an excellent curriculum model to assist you in the development of your yearly curriculum. The book goes into much more detail than what I shared in the video. For example, the book describes how teachers should unpack (and repack) their learning standards. It also talks about mistakes of curriculum development - coverage and activity-oriented design; which is referred to as the "twin sins" of traditional curriculum design. While my subject area is science, the book is also packed with K-12 curriculum desing and lesson plan ideas. It also includes examples and a few templates (additional templates are available in supplementary UbD resources). UbD is a great book for those interested in creating lessons (their own or for others) and highlights several key ideas in regard to the art of teaching (and developing pedagogy).

What are eLibrary BookCarts and Quizzes? Get an overview here to get started. To view our full training series about this exclusive lesson planning and resource collection tool, click here: http://www.proquestk12.com/landings/Vids_eLibrary.shtml No matter which version of eLibrary your library receives from ProQuest, the integrated BookCart and QuizCart tools make it easy for you and others to integrate digital resources and assessments into daily classroom use.  Full eLibrary BookCart resources can be found here: http://proquestk12.com/productinfo/elibrary_bookcarts.shtml BookCarts (download our quick start guide) provide point-and-click templates for building standards- and Lexile-correlated reading lists, project pages, lesson plans, and assessments with online content. Educators can incorporate links to relevant publications, articles, photos, maps, multimedia files, and websites from online sources or personal favorite weblinks. BookCarts and QuizCarts can be easily shared by teachers in the same school or any school in the district. Teachers and library media specialists can collaborate with our BookCart Editor tool to pre-select a collection of reference materials and store them in special BookCart lists that are accessible to students for a variety of inquiry-based learning activities. We've also created hundreds of model BookCarts to help teachers get a jump start on assigning inquiry-based learning activities. These BookCarts correlate to most of the popular topics/issues assigned for research in all curriculum areas and grade levels. The models include selected resources combined with lesson plan elements: essential questions for critical thinking, student directions, a standard, and options for print call numbers and a quiz. This makes each a self-contained one-stop learning activity.

What's New in Teaching Business Communication? Adapting Persuasive Message Skills to Social Media - Expert Speaker: Courtland Bovee The AIDA model and similar approaches have been successful with marketing and sales messages for decades, but in the social media landscape, consumers are more apt to look for product information from other consumers, not the companies marketing those products. Consequently, today's business communicators need new skills to encourage and participate in these online conversations. Following these guidelines will help students adapt what they're learning in the course to the new realities of promotional communication. How Social Media and Electronic Communication Are Revolutionizing Business Communication, 2016

11:08
How Social Media and Electronic Communication Are Revolutionizing Business Communication, Updated Expert Speaker: Courtland Bovee, one of America's leading instructors in clear and effective communication, coauthors (with John Thill) the world's leading textbooks in business communication. Professor Bovee's specialty is social media and electronic communication. In this video update, Courtland Bovee explains that social media isn't a fad. It's a fundamental shift in the way we're communicating. But not only is the communication model changing, what is being taught in a typical business communication course should be changing, too. This video answers these important questions: (1) What's the difference between social media and electronic communication?, (2) How is social media and electronic communication changing how we communicate?, and (3) What resources are available for teaching social media and electronic communication? After you've watched this video, visit the sites below for additional information that will make your teaching easier and more effective. Visual Media Chapter in a Business Communication Textbook Adds A Powerful Medium: Television

05:01
What's New in Teaching Business Communication? Visual Media Chapter Adds A Powerful Medium -- Expert Speaker: Courtland Bovee This video discusses an important medium that has now, for the first time, been integrated into a business communication text's visual media chapter. Video has become a core business medium. In fact, one could argue that video is almost as revolutionary as social media, given how many business messages that were once delivered in written format are now delivered via video. And just as document design, presentation slides, web writing, and other tasks moved out of the specialist realm and became mainstream skill expectations, many employees are now expected to be able to do basic video work for training courses, product demos, video news releases, customer service, and other routine applications. With companies such as Zappos encouraging video uploads from job applicants, video could become significant in employment communication as well. Just as Courtand Bovee and John Thill were the first business communication authors to cover social media, they now once again lead the way in new topic coverage by adding a unique section on video production as part of Chapter 9, Visual Media, in their text, Business Communication Today, 12th Ed. It guides students through preproduction, production, and post production, with simple hands-on advice at each stage. Students can learn even more about video production by visiting a website described in one of the book's Learn More features that offers a wealth of advice on producing quality videos. As more and more companies rely on video for internal and external communication, learning some basic video skills will make students more effective and more valuable communicators. You are strongly encouraged to include video production as part of your full-spectrum business communication course. Business Communication Today, 12th Edition, would be the ideal text for you to use, because it's the only business communication text that offers coverage of business video. Steve Terry on Web 2.0 Tools for Teaching and Learning - MSU Libraries Emerging Technologies Summit

43:49
As the proliferation of "cloud" tools grows, it is increasingly easier to integrate these new media tools into academe and to adapt them for our teaching and learning environments. In addition to the usefulness and relatively low-cost of these tools, equal consideration must be given to the effort required to support these tools within our campus environments. The University of Memphis has attempted to build sets of criteria around recommended teaching and learning tools, which include many new and emerging "cloud" or "Web 2.0″ tools. What emerged was the need that faculty simply wanted a categorized list of teaching and learning tools that could be easily referenced and that could be share with their colleagues. The challenge for our local support environment at Memphis was to create this list of tool sets that was not only meaningful for our campus, but also to recommend tools that were either already standards, or to recommend new tools that required very little software and/or user support. This is a presentation from the 2011 MSU Libraries Emerging Technologies Summit. For more information about the Summit, please visit http://library.msstate.edu/emergingtech.
