High School Science Teacher Vlog #2 | Curriculum Design: Backward Planning

11:46
Join me as I discuss my poor curriculum design process as a new teacher and how I eventually developed those skills; which helped me later on in my career (as a district instructional specialist and campus assistant principal). Subscribe, and Bond with James, so that you don't miss updates! _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Purchase the book, Understanding by Design, here: http://astore.amazon.com/bondwithjames-20/detail/1416600353 Facebook Group: Secondary Science Teacher PLC ***Security clearance is required as the group is for secondary science teachers only*** http://bit.ly/2s0E6Dz _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ BOND WITH ME ON MY OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS: (@bondwithjames for all of them) - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/bondwithjames - Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bondwithjames - Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/bondwithjames - TeachersPayTeachers https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/store/bond-with-james _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Additional insight: If you are unfamiliar with the Backward Design process or wish to advance your career as an instructional leader (administrator, department chair, or instructional coach/specialist), then I recommend reading the book, Understanding by Design, by Wiggins and McTighe. Furthermore, the framework serves as an excellent curriculum model to assist you in the development of your yearly curriculum. The book goes into much more detail than what I shared in the video. For example, the book describes how teachers should unpack (and repack) their learning standards. It also talks about mistakes of curriculum development - coverage and activity-oriented design; which is referred to as the "twin sins" of traditional curriculum design. While my subject area is science, the book is also packed with K-12 curriculum desing and lesson plan ideas. It also includes examples and a few templates (additional templates are available in supplementary UbD resources). UbD is a great book for those interested in creating lessons (their own or for others) and highlights several key ideas in regard to the art of teaching (and developing pedagogy).

Adapting Persuasive Message Skills to Social Media

What's New in Teaching Business Communication? Adapting Persuasive Message Skills to Social Media - Expert Speaker: Courtland Bovee The AIDA model and similar approaches have been successful with marketing and sales messages for decades, but in the social media landscape, consumers are more apt to look for product information from other consumers, not the companies marketing those products. Consequently, today's business communicators need new skills to encourage and participate in these online conversations. Following these guidelines will help students adapt what they're learning in the course to the new realities of promotional communication. Teach Your Students the Modern Slide Design That Many Presentation Specialists Now Advocate

05:05
What's New in Teaching Business Communcation? Teach Your Students the Modern Slide Design That Many Presentation Specialists Now Advocate -- Expert Speaker: Courtland Bovee The complaint of "death by PowerPoint" is often voiced by audiences forced to sit through screen after screen of overstuffed bullet-point slides. But presentations don't need to be so dull. As students learn in Bovee and Thill texts, the most important design decision for a presentation is whether to use conventional structured slides or the looser, free-form slides that many presentation specialists now advocate. If the text you're currently using is teaching only conventional bullet-point slide design, it isn't preparing students for the expectations of today's workplace. Steve Terry on Web 2.0 Tools for Teaching and Learning - MSU Libraries Emerging Technologies Summit

43:49
As the proliferation of "cloud" tools grows, it is increasingly easier to integrate these new media tools into academe and to adapt them for our teaching and learning environments. In addition to the usefulness and relatively low-cost of these tools, equal consideration must be given to the effort required to support these tools within our campus environments. The University of Memphis has attempted to build sets of criteria around recommended teaching and learning tools, which include many new and emerging "cloud" or "Web 2.0″ tools. What emerged was the need that faculty simply wanted a categorized list of teaching and learning tools that could be easily referenced and that could be share with their colleagues. The challenge for our local support environment at Memphis was to create this list of tool sets that was not only meaningful for our campus, but also to recommend tools that were either already standards, or to recommend new tools that required very little software and/or user support. This is a presentation from the 2011 MSU Libraries Emerging Technologies Summit. For more information about the Summit, please visit http://library.msstate.edu/emergingtech.

SEO For Beginners: 3 Powerful SEO Tips to Rank #1 on Google in 2019

09:21
SEO For Beginners: 3 Powerful SEO Tips to Rank #1 on Google in 2019 Are you new to SEO and want to rank #1 on google this upcoming year? Here are 3 SEO strategies that will boost your rankings! #1: Focus on content Google has this update called Hummingbird, and with Hummingbird, websites who just have content on everything won't do as well as sites which focus on one single niche and are super thorough. You want to be VERY thorough with your SEO content. Poke holes in your content and fill them all up, so then that way people are like, "This is the end all site "that you should end up reading "if you're interested in dating online." #2: Optimize your title tag and your meta description Have you ever done a Google search, and noticed that every time you do it, there is this link at the top, and then there's this one sentence with a link at the top is called the title tag. And the description below is called the meta description. Now think of it this way, if you search for the phrase online dating, and you don't see the word online dating in neither the title or the description, are you going to click on the result? Well if you are, there's something wrong, because why would you click on a result that isn't related to what you're looking for? In addition to that, have you ever searched for a term like online dating? And have you ever noticed that the word isn't in the title or description? That's because Google tracks who's clicking on what listing, and they've learned that when a keyword is in the listing, that same keyword that you're searching for, they know you're way more likely to click through. So in your title tag and your meta description, make sure you include the keyword. But you can't just add the keyword, "online dating," right? The easiest way and what I would do and I wish it was this simple; I will just put "online dating, online dating, online dating, online dating." If I could put it 20 times so people would know that the article is on online dating, I wish I would get more clicks. But it's not that simple. Yes you have to include the keyword in your title and your description, but it has to be appealing. If it doesn't flow in a sentence, it's not easy to read, and it's not appealing or evoking curiosity, no one is gonna click through. #3: Use Google Search Console Did you know that Google gives you a tool that teaches you how to rank number one on Google? Yes I know that sounds ridiculous but it is true, and it's called Google Search Console. If you're not already a user of it, sign up. It doesn't cost a dollar. You're missing out if you're not using it. I can't emphasize that enough. So now that you're using Google Search Console...give it a few days because it takes some time to populate data. You'll see a screen that shows Search Analytics and this shows you all the pages on your website that are getting you traffic. But the cool thing about Google Search Console is they also show you which articles are getting impressions. Take all the keywords you're getting impressions for and start adding them to your copy. Now we have an article on Instagram, and it teaches you how to get over 300 targeted Instagram followers per day. The article is around 10,000 words. When I first wrote that article, it wasn't 10,000 words, it was roughly 2,500. I went to Google Search Console, I saw all the people that are searching for terms related to the article, I added them within that article. I made it more thorough and you know what? My SEO traffic more than tripled to that article. Yes it is that simple. And when I made that change, it didn't happen right away, but I noticed the results within 50 days. That's not a long time. Now that you've learned these three tips, I challenge you in which I want you to take these tactics and implement them, and then after you implement them, in the next 45 days I want you to leave a comment with your results. Because if you're not doing well, that means I'm not happy. Teaching Visual Literacy: Media Studies Before the Internet

01:30
I thought I'd share this recently rediscovered relic from my early days as a teacher. Back in the late 1970's / early 1980’s I started teaching a high school "Media Studies" class. (Pittsford-Sutherland HS, Rochester NY). It was one semester, social studies elective that examined the impact of media on society (mainly TV - and all very McLuhan). Duane Sherwood, our building edtech specialist, was inspired by early TV pioneer, Ernie Kovacs to shoot this 1 minute video. I used it after my first few introductory lessons. That day, instead of their teacher, my students found a TV / recorder in front of the class. The sign instructed them to "watch this video." The shot took "forever" to set up. I attribute my bad acting to sitting sideways and trying to keep a straight face. It's just too bad I wore red flannel and khakis that day.... UACT CONFERENCE '09 - (Part 3) Keynote: It Takes a Village to Raise a Teacher...

08:38
It Takes a Village to Raise a Teacher... In Larson's case it took 4. Between her first teaching experience in an EBD school in Minneapolis and her current position as the media specialist at Richfield Middle School, she has taught in the most rural and urban of settings. Lessons learned from those experiences have made her the teacher she is today. Drawing from the books that shaped her as a teacher, from her first months in the classroom through changes in grade level, subject area and region to today, Larson will weave the principal lessons she has learned through her teaching experiences into stories of her adventures in the classroom.

Prior to that, I was a campus assistant principal (at the same school) and prior to that, I was a district-level science instructional specialist for high schools. And prior to that, I was a high school science teacher (biology and chemistry) and a middle school science teacher (7th and 8th grade). I decided to make this video because people always ask me why I made the decision to leave higher positions and return to teaching. The decision to return to teaching was easy - I still had a passion for all the things that led me to become a teacher in the first place. Hopefully, you will continue with me on my teaching journey as I begin to document my experiences through this teacher vlog series. Thanks for watching!

School of Education at IUPUI continues growth with third PBL Institute

04:16
More than 220 educators from three states and around 50 facilitators took part in the third annual "Learning by Doing: Project-Based Learning Institute" in Indianapolis June 27 through June 30. It was a four-day event concluding sponsored by the Indiana University School of Education at IUPUI, the University of Indianapolis and its Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL), and the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township—host of the event at Ben Davis High School. Project-based learning (PBL) requires students go through an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Rigorous projects help students learn key academic content and practice 21st Century Skills such as collaboration, communication and critical thinking. Teachers throughout Indiana and across the country have been adopting its techniques as a way to engage students in content by placing it in a "real world" context and emphasizing skills of collaboration and teamwork with classmates. Teaching teams from Utah and Ohio again joined Indiana participants for this year's event—they also came to the 2010 PBL Institute. The institute opened with a new pre-workshop event, added content disciplines, addressed PBL in the context of standards and testing, and expanded the grade level of teachers. During the first two years, participants have been focused on teaching middle school through postsecondary. This summer's program has added elementary-level teaching. Joy Seybold, chair of secondary teacher education and coordinator for the Transition to Teaching Program at IUPUI, said that the continued spread of PBL at the middle school and beyond has spurred elementary teachers to learn more, even if they aren't fully using PBL for their students. "They want to prepare students so they're ready for the new tech approach when they get to high school," Seybold said. "So I think that's partially why there's a growing interest among the elementary population. But then there have been several elementary schools that have been more or less project-based all along and now they're taking it to the next step." This year's event has also attracted more teachers from different subject areas who want to partner on PBL projects. "We're pulling a lot more school teams, particularly high school interdisciplinary teams," said Adriana Melnyk-Brandt, director of professional development for the IU School of Education at IUPUI. "This is exciting because we're seeing a new approach at the high school level, with teachers trying to take it across all content areas." Melnyk-Brandt added that the institute has many more first-time participants this summer from a range of schools, including charters, parochial, and more rural settings. There are more specialized areas covered during the workshop as well, this year including librarians, or media specialists. Rhonda Huisman, assistant librarian at the IUPUI University Library and liaison to the School of Education, said that she observed last year's PBL Institute "and there were lots and lots of question of questions that I thought librarians could answer." Huisman said elementary librarians often have a chance to co-create student PBL units with teachers, and there are also opportunities for middle and high school teachers to partner with librarians. She said she also wanted to give others some thoughts about how they might drive a PBL lesson plan using library resources. "Some participants right now have no librarian at their school," Huisman said. "So this is the perfect opportunity for them to sort of pick our brains about what would we do if we were there to assist them, and even give them some outside support once they leave here." Seybold said an added piece this year is helping teachers use each other as resources after the workshop is over. All participants are establishing accounts this week through "Edmodo"-- a free social learning network for teachers, students, and schools that can help the teachers share ideas, lesson plans, and seek advice. "So we're hoping that the online networking will really support them over the time that they're implementing the projects that they develop here," Seybold said.
