Lithium-ion batteries: How do they work?
Smartphone, cordless screwdriver, laptops and defibrillators: Everyone knows the lithium-ion battery - or the Li-Ion Battery - for energy storage in a variety of modern appliances. A great future for the battery is predicted in the modern electric car. But how does this battery work? The animation shows how the components of the battery work together to release energy and to recharge the battery again. The goal: BASF wants to make the electric car of tomorrow reliable and suitable for everyday use with lithium-ion batteries. BASF helps to increase the mobility of the electric car by making the lithium-ion battery even more powerful. This film explains the principle of the lithium-ion battery: The battery is enclosed in an aluminum and copper layer. In between are a positive electrode, the cathode, and a negative electrode, the anode. The cathode consists of a lithium metal oxide, the anode is a graphite layer. In order for the Li ions to migrate into the cell, the cell is filled with an electrolyte. The electrolyte of the battery must be extremely clean. Cathode and anode in the battery are split by a separator, which is permeable to the Lithium-ion. In addition, the process of charging and discharging is displayed. ISRO will Share lithium-ion battery technology to private companies
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has given India many reasons to feel proud. Its achievements have established the country as a forerunner in the field of space, along with pioneers like NASA, European space agency, Russian space agency Roscosmos, Japanese space agency JAXA and China National Space Administration. The Indian government has asked ISRO to allow manufacturers interested in producing indigenous lithium-ion batteries, including those from private sector, to obtain the technology for its mass production. ISRO will now come up with a framework to make this process smooth. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre under ISRO has developed indigenous technology to manufacture such high-power batteries for automobiles and e-vehicles and their feasibility tests in vehicles have been successful. Over half a dozen major automobile companies, battery manufacturers and public sector undertakings have already approached ISRO. Mahindra Renault, Hyundai, Nissan, Tata Motors, High Energy Batteries, BHEL and Indian Oil have shown interest in producing the indigenous lithium-ion batteries. Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari had sought ISRO's help to develop indigenous technology for lithium-ion batteries so that their prices are within the reach of Indian customers. ISRO had earlier developed similar batteries for Mangalyaan, satellites and the launch vehicle applications. The Indian government has set an ambitious target for pushing more use of electric vehicles to reduce air pollution, which has become one of the biggest health concerns. Batteries are the key component of any electric vehicle. At present, all lithium-ion batteries are imported from foreign countries and it's very expensive. The lithium-ion batteries have high-power, but these weigh less and their volume is much less as comparison to conventional batteries.

Lithium Ion Batteries in Electric Vehicles
By Austin Anderson, Lewei He, Kiri Nicholson, and Brooke Noeska Adoption of electric cars has been on the rise for the past decade due to the substantial advances that have been made by improvement of technology. The greatest challenges regarding electric cars are their batteries. Finding a balance between battery life, weight, rechargeability, and cost has proven to be a significant issue. This video focuses on lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. First, we provide a quick survey of electric vehicle designs. We then discuss chemistry, physics, and material science behind basic design of lithium-ion batteries. Next, we look at challenges that electric vehicles and the batteries face, which is the balance between adequate energy storage and weight of the battery. How do we solve these challenges? The answer to this question lies within the material science paradigm triangle, which looks at property, processing, and structure. One key aspect in performance of the battery is the use of silicon versus graphite anodes, in which lithium ions are absorbed. Considering properties, graphite is more stable while silicon can absorb more ions, although they sometimes absorb too much and fail due to the mechanical stress. Considering processing, silicon films as thin as 20nm can absorb nearly the maximum amount of ions while limiting the amount of load the ions create. Finally, in a structural view, research has shown that small amount of tin in silicon anodes can greatly enhance capacity. Similarly, silicon-graphene anodes are another option with improvements in capacity and stability. In this perspective, the way to improve performance is clear: thinner silicon sheets with small amount of tin. Lithium ion batteries hold a lot of advantages over other types of power sources. Compared to gasoline, vehicles produce less emission by using power that may be generated by renewable and nuclear energy. Compared to other batteries, lithium-ion provides high energy density by weight, relatively low amount of toxic and hazardous elements, and a good cycle durability. The future of electric vehicles is immense, and with advancements in material science, lithium-ion batteries will likely continue to provide the energy that not only drives cars, but also drives the growth of the market of electric vehicles. Types of Batteries in Hindi
A battery is a source of electrical energy, which is provided by one or more electrochemical cells of the battery after conversion of stored chemical energy. In today’s life, batteries play an important part as many household and industrial appliances use batteries as their power source. Types of Batteries: Batteries can be divided into two major categories, primary batteries and secondary batteries. A primary battery is a disposable kind of battery. Batteries Once used, it cannot be recharged. Secondary batteries are rechargeable batteries. Once empty, it can be recharged again. This charging and discharging can happen many times depending on the battery type. Alkaline batteries, Mercury batteries, Silver-Oxide batteries, and Zinc carbon batteries are examples of primary batteries whereas Lead-Acid batteries and Lithium batteries fall into the secondary battery's category. Alkaline Batteries Alkaline batteries are non-rechargeable, high energy density, batteries that have a long life span. This battery obtained its name because the electrolyte used in it is alkaline (potassium hydroxide). The chemical composition features zinc powder as an anode and manganese dioxide as the cathode with potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte. Zinc-Carbon Batteries Zinc-Carbon batteries are also known as dry cells (as the nature of electrolyte used in these cells is dry), which come in a composition of a carbon rod (cathode) surrounded by a mixture of carbon powder and manganese dioxide (to increase the conductivity). This whole combination is packed in a zinc container acting as the anode. The electrolyte is a mixture of ammonium chloride and zinc chloride. The typical voltage value is a little less than 1.5V. These batteries are durable and have longer lives. Zinc-Carbon batteries can be used effectively at moderate temperature but do not work well at low temperatures. Lead-Acid Batteries Lead-acid batteries are the rechargeable kind of batteries invented in the 1980s. These large, heavyweight batteries find the major application in automobiles as these fulfill the high current requirements of the heavy motors. The composition of Lead-Acid battery changes in charged and discharged states. A combination of Pb (negative) and PbO2 (positive) as electrodes with H2SO4 as electrolyte in charged form and PbSO4 and water in discharged form. Mercury Batteries Mercury batteries are non-rechargeable batteries that contain mercuric oxide with manganese dioxide. They are deep discharge batteries and voltage level does not fall below 1.35V until 5% energy level is reached. These batteries are less popular because of low output voltage. Furthermore, mercury is toxic and can cause hazards for humans. Lithium and Silver Oxide Batteries Lithium batteries are rechargeable (secondary) batteries, where lithium in its pure ion compound form is used. Depending on the design and chemical compounds used, lithium batteries can produce voltages from 1.5 Volts to 3.7 Volts. The most common type of lithium battery used in consumer applications uses manganese dioxide as cathode and metallic lithium as anode. Compared to ordinary zinc–carbon batteries or alkaline batteries, the voltage production of lithium cell is twice from them. Silver oxide batteries are expensive, small to large sized primary cells that offer better run time than alkaline batteries. They are usually suitable for powering low-current electrical devices.They use silver oxide as positive (cathode) electrode, zinc as negative (anode) electrode plus alkaline electrolyte, normally Potassium hydroxide (KOH) or Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH).

They are however more expensive than a lead acid, but the cost may be well worth it. On average a lithium-ion battery costs 30% more than a lead-acid.  Lithium-ion batteries are generally much smaller than lead-acid. For this reason, make certain upon purchase that it will fit your motorcycle. Many sellers of lithium-ion batteries will put the battery in a "stock case" for your brand/model motorcycle. That means that they'll make it the same size as your stock lead-acid battery so it will fit perfectly in the battery compartment of your Harley-Davidson as an example. If you choose to buy the smaller size lithium-ion it may bounce around in your large battery compartment. Many come with shims so you can try to wedge the battery in to keep it from moving around. My recommendation is to get a lithium-ion battery with the correct case size for your application.  When purchasing a lithium-ion, also be aware of the terminal placement such as side or top to make sure it will work with your application. Again, this is why I bought a direct replacement lithium-ion made for my Harley Street Glide that has everything the same as my lead-acid.  Lithium-ion batteries often have more cold cranking amps (CCA) and that means more powerful starts. As an example, the Twin Power Lithium Ion Battery -DLFP30HL-BS-H I bought has 625 CCA, whereas a typical lead-acid for a Harley will have 400-500 CCA.  The first possible drawback to a lithium-ion is that if you let it fall to below 11 volts by accidentally leaving your headlight as an example, you may permanently damage the battery. Whereas, a lead-acid in good shape could be charged and likely recover. The second drawback, not really in my opinion, to a lithium-ion motorcycle battery, is that if you leave your motorcycle out in temperatures below freezing for an extended period of time, you'll have to "wake" the battery to get it cycling. This is easily done by turning your headlight on for a short period or bumping the starter a few times. Once awake, you lithium-ion goes to work fast and gives you those cold cranking amps. I tested my lithium-ion battery by placing it in my freezer for a bit over two hours at 12 degrees Fahrenheit. I tested it on my Harley and it fired right up and the battery never went to sleep. That tells me that you'd need to have your bike in the below-freezing temps for some time before it would go to sleep. Again, easily overcome by just bumping your starter or turning your headlight on to wake it.  An upside is that Lithium-ion batteries don't really need to be on a battery tender all winter like a lead-acid as they only lose about 10% of their charge a year while sitting. Whereas, a lead-acid battery loses 1% per day. Just remove the negative battery terminal on your lithium-ion battery when storing your motorcycle & you're good to go. Then, just charge it up and top it off before riding season. In contrast, you should keep your lead-acid on a battery tender while you park and/or store your motorcycle for any length of time to greatly increase its lifespan. Due to their construction, the Gel and Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) types of VRLA can be mounted in any orientation, and do not require constant maintenance. The term "maintenance free" is a misnomer as VRLA batteries still require cleaning and regular functional testing. They are widely used in large portable electrical devices, off-grid power systems and similar roles, where large amounts of storage are needed at a lower cost than other low-maintenance technologies like lithium-ion. There are three primary types of VRLA batteries, Sealed VR wet cell, AGM and Gel. Gel cells add silica dust to the electrolyte, forming a thick putty-like gel. These are sometimes referred to as "silicone batteries". AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries feature fiberglass mesh between the battery plates which serves to contain the electrolyte. Both designs offer advantages and disadvantages compared to conventional batteries and sealed VR wet cells, as well as each other. Lead-acid cells consist of two plates of lead, which serve as electrodes, suspended in diluted sulfuric acid, which is then the electrolyte. In conventional lead-acid cells, the diluted acid is in liquid form, hence the term "flooded" or "wet" cells. VRLA cells have essentially the same lead-acid chemistry, but the AGM and Gel types have the diluted acid electrolyte solution immobilized, either by soaking a fiberglass mat in it (hence: glass-mat batteries), or by turning the liquid into a paste-like gel by the addition of silica and other gelling agents (hence: gel batteries). The wet cell type contains acid in the liquid form similarly to the flooded lead acid batteries, just the wet cell VRLA battery case is better sealed. When a cell discharges, the lead and diluted acid undergo a chemical reaction that produces lead sulfate and water (see lead–acid battery for details of the chemical reaction). When a cell is subsequently charged, the lead sulfate and water are turned back into lead and acid. In all lead-acid battery designs, charge current must be adjusted to match the ability of the battery to absorb the energy. If the charging current is too great, some of it will be wasted decomposing water into hydrogen and oxygen, in addition to the intended conversion of lead sulfate and water into lead dioxide, lead, and sulfuric acid which reverses the discharge process. If these gases are allowed to escape, as in a conventional flooded cell, the battery may need to be topped up with water from time to time. In contrast, in VRLA batteries the gases are retained within the battery as long as the pressure remains within safe levels. Under normal operating conditions the gases can then recombine within the battery itself, sometimes with the help of a catalyst, and no topping-up is needed. However, if the pressure exceeds safety limits, safety valves open to allow the excess gases to escape, and in doing so regulate the pressure back to safe levels (hence "valve-regulated" in "VRLA"). In flooded lead-acid batteries, the liquid electrolyte is a hazard during shipping and makes them unsuitable for many portable applications. Furthermore, the need to maintain water levels makes them unsuitable for maintenance-free applications. The immobilized electrolyte in VRLA batteries (AGM and Gel types) addresses these problems. At the same time, since VRLA cells can't be "topped off" with water, any hydrogen lost during outgassing can't easily be replaced.....

Despite having a very low energy-to-weight ratio and a low energy-to-volume ratio, its ability to supply high surge currents means that the cells have a relatively large power-to-weight ratio. These features, along with their low cost, makes it attractive for use in motor vehicles to provide the high current required by automobile starter motors. As they are inexpensive compared to newer technologies, lead–acid batteries are widely used even when surge current is not important and other designs could provide higher energy densities. Large-format lead–acid designs are widely used for storage in backup power supplies in cell phone towers, high-availability settings like hospitals, and stand-alone power systems. For these roles, modified versions of the standard cell may be used to improve storage times and reduce maintenance requirements. Gel-cells and absorbed glass-mat batteries are common in these roles, collectively known as VRLA (valve-regulated lead–acid) batteries. In 1999, lead–acid battery sales account for 40–45% of the value from batteries sold worldwide (not including China and Russia), a manufacturing market value of about US$15 billion.
