Enter to Grow | Children's Garden Gate

00:55
This short video is accompanied by a blog entry at gabrileblacksmith.blogspot.com about the gate creation. Tim demonstrates the use of the fly press in making design detail—distressing the edges of the iron—while the metal is cold. A tedious, but wonderful addition to the otherwise flat edges of the gate posts. The gate is slated for installation in September 2011 at Lincoln Grade School in Hillsboro, Oregon. A generous donation from Intel provided funding for a weather station and children's garden.

Building an Off Grid Cabin using Free Pallet Wood: A Wilderness Project

01:03:23
We built this small off grid log cabin using recycled pallet wood that we collected for free. The aim of the diy project was to try and save money by building a cabin in the forest on the cheap. Living off grid is something we have always admired, being able to forage and gather food from the land, much like the primitive hunter-gatherer did. This off the grid cabin, although small, is an ideal one-man bug out camp in a survival situation. Slowly, we are turning this off grid cabin in the forest into a wilderness homestead. So far, this tiny hobbit home has no electricity or solar power, but it does have a window, roof, front porch, folding table, raised bed, chair, bench, shelves, bookcase and a woodstove to keep the cabin warm during the cold winter months. To build the pallet wood cabin we have used a mixture of hand tools and power tools. We filmed and documented the building of this log cabin in a playlist on our channel called "The Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin" which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxnadpeGdTxDMYqxhMnVMPHzgIuUOKB54 We started the cabin build by breaking the pallets down into useable pieces of timber. We then cleared a site in the forest to build the foundations of the cabin using larger pallets. The second stage of the build was the side walls, and then the roof, which we used a piece of recycled tin from an old barn. We then fitted a small window from a garden shed, and started to work on building the front porch. Once the main structure of the cabin was complete, we focused on making rustic pallet wood furniture for the inside of the small house. We bolted together a raised bed, and made a small chair and foldaway table to save space inside. We then needed to heat the cabin, for this we opted for the G Stove Heat View which has a stove pipe oven attachment so that we can bake food in it, plus a water container to boil water for fresh coffee and tea. In many of the episodes we cooked food in cast iron frying pans on the woodstove. In the warmer months we cooked on an open camp fire using a cast iron grill on a Bushcraft style tripod which we lashed together. We have cooked fresh fish, pie, bacon, eggs, soup and much more on the woodstove. Hopefully, we can use this former Bushcraft Camp as an area to practice developing our wilderness survival skills, learning primitive technology and how to forage for wild edibles and catch and cook our food. At the end of the day, this project was more about a father and son spending time in the outdoors working on free diy projects and learning how to become self reliant and save money for a happier lifestyle. We hope you enjoy the adventure! The Woodstove we use is the Gstove Heat View. Bushcraft Shelters - Tree Root Shelter with no tools | TA Outdoors

07:40
Mike shows you how to build a bushcraft shelter using no tools. This is a simple, fast and easy shelter to use when you have little time and need to construct a natural shelter using wood from the woods/forest. The structure is a simple "A" Frame shelter, using a large tree root for support. The shelter is covered with moss to protect you from the wind and rain as well as provide insulation for the shelter. It took roughly an hour to build. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Watch more BUSHCRAFT videos here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxnadpeGdTxBqUjgb60isxg1sLCb1soDR ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CAMERA & FILMING GEAR I USE: Main Camera: Canon 550d Secondary Camera: http://amzn.to/2cc4yNV Tripod: http://amzn.to/2c3VVXJ Microphone: http://amzn.to/2cKi7Zc BUSHCRAFT GEAR I USE: My Backpack: http://amzn.to/2cKiGlF Folding Saw: http://amzn.to/2cr9iEX Sharpening Stone: http://amzn.to/2cr90O7 Firesteel: http://amzn.to/2cAgYRZ Shemagh: http://amzn.to/2cvsI8Y These are amazon associate links If you wish to send me stuff: Mike Pullen PO Box 7466 HOOK RG27 7NA -----------------------------------SOCIAL MEDIA------------------------------------------------------ Facebook → https://www.facebook.com/totallyawesomeoutdoors ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out our other YouTube Channel: TOTALLY AWESOME FISHING: https://www.youtube.com/user/TAFishing

DIY Raised Garden Bed with Privacy Wall

02:59
More details here ➜http://empressofdirt.net/raised-bed-privacy-wall/ This raised garden bed with privacy wall is a project that solved a number of problems in my backyard. -the raised bed provides a lot of growing space where I can control the soil and watering -the privacy wall blocks out the neighbour's view of my yard, and provides wind protection for the plants -the privacy wall provides lots of opportunities to display garden art and provides protection and support for an espaliered apple tree This video gives an overview of how I built this project. There are more details on the post at Empress of Dirt: http://empressofdirt.net/raised-bed-privacy-wall/ In the video I also mention how to deal with a fear of power tools so that you can make all the stuff you want without depending on someone else to do all that work for you. If you want to read more about this, see this pep talk: http://empressofdirt.net/overcome-fear-power-tools/ It's very helpful to know what it is you specifically fear so you can address it. Often the fear is of the unknown. Learning to operate power tools safely and properly, and troubleshoot any problems, is an excellent way to gain confidence. I never feared the tools but always hated the noise. When I finally got good ear protection, it became really enjoyable to work in the shop building stuff. Scrap wood bee hives and a BEE Update!

06:27
Here is a quick update of my bee project where I caught 4 bee swarms this spring and relocated them into 4 DIY scrap wood top bar bee hives. The hives are a bit junky and I'm still very new to beekeeping but so far the bees seem like they are doing well and growing! I've made a LOT of mistakes as you'll see, but my main goal was to see if I could get into beekeeping on the cheap.. and I mean cheap! Currently, my only direct expense has been a smoker... I'm borrowing my suit from my wife uncle and the rest has been salvaged from supplies/materials I had on hand:) Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions... or tips! #swarmcapture #beekeeping #topbarhive #diybeekeeping #feralbees #homesteadonomics #beehive #scrapwoodhive Intro music is by my brother in law, Trey Harris and the background music is from Youtube's free music library (Over Time by Vibe Tracks).

Elements of a Japanese Garden

03:11
Japanese gardens combine the basic elements of plants, water, and rocks with simple, clean lines to create a tranquil retreat. Learn how to make your own Zen garden. Make an Entrance Use a simple bamboo fence to block views of the world outside your Japanese garden. Make the entrance to your garden clear with a gate and attractive arbor. Create Mystery A key element in Japanese garden style is creating vignettes that can't be viewed all at once. Here a winding path leads your eye past the stone pagoda and beckons exploration of what's around the next corner. Most Japanese gardens rely on subtle differences in color and texture. Here conifers provide soothing shades of green for year-round interest. Some echo the pyramidal form of the pagoda while others frame the feature with their low, spreading branches. Encourage Moss Moss makes the perfect groundcover in moist shady areas of the Japanese garden. Because moss doesn't tolerate foot traffic well, place stone steppers among the moss to allow passage without damage to the cushiony surface. Make a Private Pavilion Create an intimate space in your Japanese garden with a teahouse or pavilion made of bamboo or wood. Use such a structure for entertaining or for viewing the serene landscape. Try a Pagoda Pillar Stone lanterns shaped as pagodas are staples of Japanese gardens. They can echo the roofline of a teahouse or covered gate entries in addition to providing a charming glow in the evening garden. Add Textural Contrast Shaded sections of the Japanese garden rely on subtle color contrast and bold textural differences to create interest. Here chartreuse and green hostas surround the base of a tree while variegated hakone grass softens the edge of the bed. Create Structure from Plants Trees in a Japanese garden often are pruned into shapes that reveal their architectural form. This Japanese maple shows its zigzag branching pattern. Arching branches reach over the contrasting groundcover and reflect in a nearby pool of water. Protect Yourself from Evil Spirits Legend has it that a zigzag bridge such as this one will protect you from evil spirits in the Japanese garden. The myth says that evil spirits can only travel in a straight line, so the bridge traps them, allowing you to escape to safety. Provide an Island Getaway A small island in the middle of this pond creates the illusion of a secluded Japanese garden retreat, even though the arch of the bridge is too steep to safely walk over. With a larger space and longer span on the bridge, you could access the island. Time for Reflection This small reflecting pool has a decidedly Japanese garden flavor. From the glass Japanese fishing float on its surface to the bamboo fountain, Japanese bloodgrass, stone pagoda lantern, and moss-covered rocks surrounding the pond, all elements blend in Asian style. Feed the Fish Colorful koi and goldfish bring hours of enjoyment to the Japanese garden. Train your fish to come on command for feeding time. Goldfish are hardier than koi, but both types may need to be overwintered indoors in cold climates. Go with the Flow The sound of moving water from waterfalls adds to the soothing nature of Japanese gardens. This stream is punctuated by two waterfalls and ponds. Papyrus, ornamental grasses, and groundcovers bring life to the stream edge. Deter Deer Naturally This clever bamboo device is designed to frighten deer away from the Japanese garden. The upper bamboo tube drips water into the larger, lower tube. When the tube fills, the weight of the water causes it to clunk against a bamboo mat resting on a stone. The sudden sound startles deer and reportedly scares them away. Braced with Bamboo Bamboo has many uses in Japanese gardens: It's grown as an ornamental plant, and it serves as an important structural component. This bamboo fence uses bamboo shoots as rails and smaller ones tied into latticework to follow the curve of the gravel path inlaid with steppingstones. Graceful Gravel Garden Raked gravel surrounding stones represents ripples of waves around islands. This type of Zen or Japanese garden is designed for contemplative thought and is super-easy to maintain. Artful Additions Personal touches in the Japanese garden should have a connection to nature. These polished egg-shape stones arranged in a bowl are a good example. Backed by the crimson foliage of a Japanese maple, they take on a sculptural quality. Stone Streambed Japanese gardens usually utilize representation. Here, tumbled gray river rocks of uniform size have been carefully arranged in this meandering dry streambed to create the illusion of flowing water. Ferns and evergreens line the stream, softening its "shoreline."

How to Fence Your Raised Bed Garden Using PVC

02:43
In this video I show you the materials necessary to build a pvc fencing structure that will stop deer and other critters from eating your vegetables out of your raised bed garden. The structure is made from the following and will surround an 8ftx4ft box: 22 five foot sections of schedule 40 pvc piping 16 pvc elbow joints for the corners of the structure 4 pvc T joins for the middle of the longer sides for support 4 clamps for the opening end (cost about a dollar a piece) zip ties netting of your choice that is at least 5ft in height for this design You can probably pull the whole thing off for about $65 depending on what kind of netting you end up getting. The pvc may come in a longer length than 5ft, so you may have to cut the pipe in half to make shorter lengths for your structure. The pvc I bought was in 12ft sections so I am going to make a structure that is slightly larger than this one because my sides will be 6ft instead of 5ft. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them in the comments. Thanks for watching and good luck gardening! Taken in Zone 6a, Cincinnati, Ohio 05/14/2013

DIY Chain link top rail bender, for low cost professional greenhouse

06:51
How to make your own chain link fence top rail bender and greenhouse on your own in an easy inexpensive and professional way. Bending top rail one piece at a time is far easier than my first video, where I showed how to bend the top rail with all 3 pieces together. Here is a video link to the first greenhouse I built with a railroad tie base and it has worked perfect for the last 4 years (but I like the one piece bending better for simplicity) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSFk5Rn5rGA

Cabin Life: Snow at the Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin - Unboxing Mail

25:58
We wanted to experience Cabin Life in the Snow. So we head to the Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin in Winter, which had a recent snow storm with blizzard and ice rain that came in from Siberia. We get the woodstove going, make some tea and light the candles for some hygge! We open up some subscriber mail sent from you guys, thank you so much to those who sent us stuff. This Off Grid Tiny Home was built using recycled Pallet Wood. It has been a great wilderness project which I have been doing with my Dad. It's only small, and can sleep one person. It has a woodstove, raised bed, folding table, book case, sink and wash area, front porch and small log store. It may not look like a Log Cabin, but for us it was the building part that meant the most. We used a mixture of hand tools and power tools, but our main aim was to try and save money and build the cabin for free. Thanks for joining us on this winter snow day! The Woodstove we use is the Gstove Heat View. How to Create a Bent Wood Trellis

01:49
Whenever I'm designing elements for my garden, I always keep in mind, that the more natural they are the better they seem to fit in and that's exactly what I did when I created this rustic trellis. But others have taken this idea a step further. Jim Long, author of the book Making Bentwood Arbors and Trellises, explains how to create these artistic garden ornaments. Jim Long, Author: I find that lots of people can't identify wood so, my rule of thumb is, if it bends use it. And one of the nice things about this project is you don't really have to do very much measuring and the first step is to attach a crosspiece. All I'm going to do is nail through the top piece into the bottom. What I do is kind of establish the arch that looks about the right proportion. There's no measurement again. Allen: Right. Jim: Match it with this piece and I like to twist one around the other so it kind of helps hold it in place. Allen: Sure. Jim: So this is our basic trellis shape. All of my trellises are built on this foundation. As you can see, these rustic trellises and arbors can create visual interest simply standing alone in the garden. Or they can be useful supports to plants like this vigorous climbing rose. If you'd like more information on how to make interesting trellises and arbors just check out our website. Building an Off Grid Cabin for Free to Save Money - Woodstove & Pallet Wood Bed

33:02
The Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin is really developing now that the roof and Front Porch are done. Now it is ready to have the Woodstove put in to keep the Tiny House warm in the cold winter months. We also use more free recycled Pallet Wood to build a raised bed in the one-man Cabin. Using the stove we boil water for soup and cook up some food on the stove. Closing the door on the Cabin it got really warm and next time we hope to put a thermometer inside to track the temperature. There are still plenty of jobs to do though. We need to chink the walls, perhaps with a primitive style of moss and clay, although there isn't much of that around so we might use materials from our garage. We also need to fill in any holes in the roof, add a chair to the porch and a small chair and table in the Cabin. It is now ready for me do some overnighters in and I'm really looking forward to this. Thanks to all who have watched this Primitive Cabin build by father and son. It's been a great Wilderness Project so far and we have done it all for free to save money. An awesome DIY project! Build It | How to Build a Chicken Coop

08:30
Watch the full episode: Check your local listings for air times beginning Feb. 18: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/info/0,,20613015,00.html Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva creates a backyard chicken coop for a homeowner in Connecticut in “Build It.” (See below for steps.) Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Steps for How to Build a Chicken Coop: 1. Stain the sheets of T1-11 and allow to dry. 2. Place two sheets of T1-11 on top of each other and ensure they’re even on all sides. Use a track saw to cut the roofline of the plywood at a 45-degree angle on both sheets at once. 3. Remove one sheet and then, using a jigsaw, cut a small square opening for the sliding coop door into a plywood sheet. For all the doors, the cutouts will later be reattached as the door. 4. On the next sheet, cut an opening for the small entrance door, using the jigsaw. 5. Cut a third sheet of T1-11 to form the side walls. On one of them, cut a large opening for the egg door, using a jigsaw. The other side wall will remain uncut. 6. Cut two of the 4x4 posts to the desired length, then match the angle of the roof using a miter saw for both steps. 7. Use a driver to drive in 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws to attach the posts to the plywood sheeting. 8. Use a piece of 2x4 at the bottom and the top of the coop to give it additional support. Attach these using ceramic screws, and fasten them using a driver. 9. Construct the opposite gable end, repeating the same steps. 10. Connect the two gable ends using 2x4s, and attach one of the side walls. 11. To form the rafters, screw in a 2x4 ridge beam and 2x4 purlins (parallel roof framing), using a driver and 3-inch ceramic screws. 12. Finish the framing by attaching additional 2x4s to the base of the front and back gable walls, using 3-inch ceramic screws. 13. Then, attach two more perpendicular 2x4 joists to form the floor support for the coop with 3-inch ceramic screws 14. To form the floor, use the ½-inch exterior plywood and cut out the corners to match the posts using a jigsaw. 15. Fasten the plywood floor by driving 1 5/8-inch screws into the floor joists. 16. Attach the cutout door pieces to the plywood exterior sheets of the structure using hardware of your choice. Do this by driving provided screws into the hardware. 17. Attach the chicken door by threading a rope through a pulley at the top of the door. Then attach the rope to an eyelet on the chicken door. The other end of the rope should be linked to a hook at the opposite end. A track for the door can be made using scrap wood. 18. Attach the final side wall using 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws. 19. Build a nesting box to your desired dimensions using plywood and 2x4s. 20. Cut cellular PVC trim boards to match the angles of the coop, using a miter saw. 21. Attach the PVC trim boards to the exterior of the coop using a hammer and stainless-steel trim nails. 22. Attach ½-inch plywood roof sheathing to the roof structure using a driver and 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws. 23. Lay down a layer of felt paper, and staple in place. 24. Using a hammer and roofing nails, attach the asphalt shingles with a 5-inch reveal to the roof sheathing. 25. Attach 4x4 posts of the coop to a beveled base using a driver and ceramic screws. 26. Attach the beveled base to a 2x12 square using a driver and ceramic screws to keep the coop from sinking into the ground. 27. Create a pen area using pressure-treated 2x4s to desired design. Connect the pen structure using driver and ceramic screws. Include an access door for cleaning the pen. 28. Cover the pen with chicken wire by hammering in construction staples. 29. Dig a trench in the outline of the pen at least 3 inches deep, and place the structure in the trench. This is meant to keep predators from crawling in underneath. 30. Attach the pen structure to the coop structure by driving in screws. 31. Place a piece of 2x12 from the coop door to the pen to serve as a ramp for the chickens. How to Make a Compost Bin from Pallets

04:34
Composting is the gardener’s way of recycling old plant material into rich, soil-nourishing compost. Plants love it! DIY: How to Make A Wedding Invitation using the Cricut

13:51
Hi! I just recently bought the Cricut Explore Air and wanted to show you guys how to make a fancy invitation for any occasion. The example in the video are snowflakes but if you wanted to do a swirly romance kinda card, just download different fonts on www.dafont.com for free. Seriously, I've been using the Cricut machine nonstop. It kills your time but I. can't. stop. You can literally do anyyythinggg with it. Save the Date cards, any occasion cards, cut vinyl, fabric, cardboard. I KNOW! In my humble opinion, save your money and don't subscribe for the images in design space. You can google images all over different websites for free. My next video is gonna be a tea video. A review and what I think about it. I am obsessed with tea, esp during this rainy, cold season. Thanks for watching and sticking by me! ❉ ----- Instagram —— ❉ https://www.instagram.com/jennieqdeng/ ♡Jennie

Off Grid Log Cabin: Recycled Pallet Wood Project - Roof Extension & Sink

39:51
The Log Cabin Build continues. We use Recycled Pallet Wood to build a wood roof at the back of the off grid cabin in the wilderness. Being able to use recycled materials to make simple and cheap diy projects is a useful skill to have and it helps to save money. So far the Log Cabin itself was free to build. It is heated with the woodstove, which is great for the cold winter months where temperatures drop below freezing. Although the Cabin looks might look like a shack on the outside, we've turned this primitive hut into a cosy tiny house on in the inside. With a rustic wood chair, folding table, raised bed as well as a woodstove and a book case. It also has candles, lanterns and other items that make it a one-man rustic cabin. The day started out with me alone in the woods. I got the woodstove going and made a cup of fresh coffee to start the day. Dad then joined me and together we began building work on the wilderness homestead. We opened some more subscriber gifts and answered some of the questions that you guys have been asking us in previous pallet wood cabin episodes. I hope to spend more time at the cabin to practice primitive technology, wilderness and survival skills and learn more about living off the land and foraging for wild food. The Woodstove we use is the Gstove Heat View. Watch This Video Before Building a Wood Fence

04:48
http://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/fences/index.html One of the biggest problems with a wood fence are the wood posts that start to decay, or get hit by a large colony of termites. One time I put a new fence post in, only to find out that my idea didn't work. Actually it was an idea that I read about in one of my favorite homebuilding magazines. The magazine article suggested that you paint the bottom of your wood post with a roofing tar and then install the wood post, to enjoying many years of a maintenance free fence. Instead of using a roofing tar, I painted the bottom of the wood post fence with an elastomeric paint in the wood post rotted within one year and needed to be replaced. I've tried putting gravel at the bottom of the fence posts, leaving the wood exposed at the bottom and quite a few different things and I'm here to report that I haven't came up with any improvements or tips that I could share with anyone that really worked good. Watch this video if you want to learn more about things I've done to wood posts that haven't worked well.
