Growing Plants Vertically Using A Simple Low Cost DIY Garden Arbor

03:10
Hey there everybody, how's it going? It's Dan from http://www.plantabundance.com. Today I just wanted to share with you guys how I went about putting together this garden arbor with an entry gate to the main part of the garden. Here we've got some 'Wisteria Sinensis' otherwise known as 'Prolific'. This is an abundant flowering shrub/vine. It re-flourishes in the months of June and July. And will usually start blooming in the second year, which is what's happened here. We've had them in the ground for two years and these are the first blossoms we've had. Moving right along, you can see we got some of this 'Opo Squash' or 'Bottle Gourd' hanging down from the trellis. Now this is a really cool vegetable. It's got a nice refreshing mild taste. You harvest them when there about ten to twelve inches long for eating. People will actually use them once there dried out to make things like water bottles bird houses and all kinds of stuff. We got some dried pole beans and a tree collard that's leaning against the arbor. You can see where it's poked through and created a little dense cluster and a couple birds have made a nest. Now these 'Purple Tree collards' are a perennial brassica from the cabbage family. They're rich in fiber, calcium and contain no oxalic acid so you can eat as many as you want. You can see the structure of the tree collard coming up. It's a really dense and strong structure that's doing a good job helping to hold the arbor in place. The construction for this project was very simple and low cost. All That I ended up using was (4) 5' t-posts which I then connected to the sixteen foot piece of cattle panel using just a little bit of tie wire. Other than that, a couple 4x4's that are holding the gate in place which were also tie wired to the t-posts. And the gate itself was just some left over 2x4 boards I had framed out to create a nice lightweight swing gate. so that's it guys. Well, it's another beautiful day out here in the garden. I'm enjoying shooting this video and sharing it with you guys. I hope you're having a great day and I'll be talking to you soon.

Build a cold frame with repurposed material

A few folks asked for more detail on building cold frames. In this vid, I cut 4x4's in half to create 2x4's, walk thru how to measure and make the sides, attach front and back, then screw the door on. Built another one that's just a straight box with no angles, but dug it in at an angle. How to Create a Bent Wood Trellis

01:49
Whenever I'm designing elements for my garden, I always keep in mind, that the more natural they are the better they seem to fit in and that's exactly what I did when I created this rustic trellis. But others have taken this idea a step further. Jim Long, author of the book Making Bentwood Arbors and Trellises, explains how to create these artistic garden ornaments. Jim Long, Author: I find that lots of people can't identify wood so, my rule of thumb is, if it bends use it. And one of the nice things about this project is you don't really have to do very much measuring and the first step is to attach a crosspiece. All I'm going to do is nail through the top piece into the bottom. What I do is kind of establish the arch that looks about the right proportion. There's no measurement again. Allen: Right. Jim: Match it with this piece and I like to twist one around the other so it kind of helps hold it in place. Allen: Sure. Jim: So this is our basic trellis shape. All of my trellises are built on this foundation. As you can see, these rustic trellises and arbors can create visual interest simply standing alone in the garden. Or they can be useful supports to plants like this vigorous climbing rose. If you'd like more information on how to make interesting trellises and arbors just check out our website. Door is in! With ultra simple latch for the moment.

00:51
Very simple door installation on the greenhouse. It is held on with 2 screws (+ being attached to the perspex above). Later I will silicone the door to the wood all they way along vertically and it will be very solid. It is an old shower door and I have no idea if it would break if I drill into the glass. (No need to find out.)

How to Fence Your Raised Bed Garden Using PVC

02:43
Support me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nkydiy In this video I show you the materials necessary to build a pvc fencing structure that will stop deer and other critters from eating your vegetables out of your raised bed garden. The structure is made from the following and will surround an 8ftx4ft box: 22 five foot sections of schedule 40 pvc piping 16 pvc elbow joints for the corners of the structure 4 pvc T joins for the middle of the longer sides for support 4 clamps for the opening end (cost about a dollar a piece) zip ties netting of your choice that is at least 5ft in height for this design You can probably pull the whole thing off for about $65 depending on what kind of netting you end up getting. The pvc may come in a longer length than 5ft, so you may have to cut the pipe in half to make shorter lengths for your structure. The pvc I bought was in 12ft sections so I am going to make a structure that is slightly larger than this one because my sides will be 6ft instead of 5ft. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them in the comments. Thanks for watching and good luck gardening! Taken in Zone 6a, Cincinnati, Ohio 05/14/2013

Elements of a Japanese Garden

03:11
Japanese gardens combine the basic elements of plants, water, and rocks with simple, clean lines to create a tranquil retreat. Learn how to make your own Zen garden. Make an Entrance Use a simple bamboo fence to block views of the world outside your Japanese garden. Make the entrance to your garden clear with a gate and attractive arbor. Create Mystery A key element in Japanese garden style is creating vignettes that can't be viewed all at once. Here a winding path leads your eye past the stone pagoda and beckons exploration of what's around the next corner. Most Japanese gardens rely on subtle differences in color and texture. Here conifers provide soothing shades of green for year-round interest. Some echo the pyramidal form of the pagoda while others frame the feature with their low, spreading branches. Encourage Moss Moss makes the perfect groundcover in moist shady areas of the Japanese garden. Because moss doesn't tolerate foot traffic well, place stone steppers among the moss to allow passage without damage to the cushiony surface. Make a Private Pavilion Create an intimate space in your Japanese garden with a teahouse or pavilion made of bamboo or wood. Use such a structure for entertaining or for viewing the serene landscape. Try a Pagoda Pillar Stone lanterns shaped as pagodas are staples of Japanese gardens. They can echo the roofline of a teahouse or covered gate entries in addition to providing a charming glow in the evening garden. Add Textural Contrast Shaded sections of the Japanese garden rely on subtle color contrast and bold textural differences to create interest. Here chartreuse and green hostas surround the base of a tree while variegated hakone grass softens the edge of the bed. Create Structure from Plants Trees in a Japanese garden often are pruned into shapes that reveal their architectural form. This Japanese maple shows its zigzag branching pattern. Arching branches reach over the contrasting groundcover and reflect in a nearby pool of water. Protect Yourself from Evil Spirits Legend has it that a zigzag bridge such as this one will protect you from evil spirits in the Japanese garden. The myth says that evil spirits can only travel in a straight line, so the bridge traps them, allowing you to escape to safety. Provide an Island Getaway A small island in the middle of this pond creates the illusion of a secluded Japanese garden retreat, even though the arch of the bridge is too steep to safely walk over. With a larger space and longer span on the bridge, you could access the island. Time for Reflection This small reflecting pool has a decidedly Japanese garden flavor. From the glass Japanese fishing float on its surface to the bamboo fountain, Japanese bloodgrass, stone pagoda lantern, and moss-covered rocks surrounding the pond, all elements blend in Asian style. Feed the Fish Colorful koi and goldfish bring hours of enjoyment to the Japanese garden. Train your fish to come on command for feeding time. Goldfish are hardier than koi, but both types may need to be overwintered indoors in cold climates. Go with the Flow The sound of moving water from waterfalls adds to the soothing nature of Japanese gardens. This stream is punctuated by two waterfalls and ponds. Papyrus, ornamental grasses, and groundcovers bring life to the stream edge. Deter Deer Naturally This clever bamboo device is designed to frighten deer away from the Japanese garden. The upper bamboo tube drips water into the larger, lower tube. When the tube fills, the weight of the water causes it to clunk against a bamboo mat resting on a stone. The sudden sound startles deer and reportedly scares them away. Braced with Bamboo Bamboo has many uses in Japanese gardens: It's grown as an ornamental plant, and it serves as an important structural component. This bamboo fence uses bamboo shoots as rails and smaller ones tied into latticework to follow the curve of the gravel path inlaid with steppingstones. Graceful Gravel Garden Raked gravel surrounding stones represents ripples of waves around islands. This type of Zen or Japanese garden is designed for contemplative thought and is super-easy to maintain. Artful Additions Personal touches in the Japanese garden should have a connection to nature. These polished egg-shape stones arranged in a bowl are a good example. Backed by the crimson foliage of a Japanese maple, they take on a sculptural quality. Stone Streambed Japanese gardens usually utilize representation. Here, tumbled gray river rocks of uniform size have been carefully arranged in this meandering dry streambed to create the illusion of flowing water. Ferns and evergreens line the stream, softening its "shoreline."

How to Build a Rustic Cooler -- by Home Repair Tutor

08:19
http://www.homerepairtutor.com/how-to-build-a-rustic-cooler/ (who doesn't love a rusting cooler, they're sweet!!) Wanna learn how to build a rustic cooler from FREE pallets? I was able to do this with only one saw and a drill & impact driver. Hi Friend, this is Jeff from Home Repair Tutor and you'll love this way awesome rustic cooler project. Primarily because it's so darn easy. You can expect to spend about a day and a half on this project but in the end you'll have a great result. It all starts with about 5-8 pallets. You can visit a local landscape supply company and ask them if they don't mind parting with a few old pallets. Chances are high they'll say yes and show you which ones to take. Get the pallets home and either scrub or power wash them. This makes the wood look great and allows you to choose the slats that appear the best. I used the Dremel Ultra Saw to cut all the slats to size and assemble the rustic cooler frame. Then I used a 50 qt Igloo cooler that was sitting my garage collecting dust. You'll have to make a frame for the cooler lid and add some accessories (like a battle cap opener and brass drain). But I show you how to do all this in the video. For all the details watch my video http://youtu.be/bvxmZPy21Jo If you think this video would help a friend feel free to share it http://youtu.be/bvxmZPy21Jo For tips on home repair & improvement make sure you check out more Home Repair Tutor videos on YouTube. If you need help with garage storage solutions check out this video http://youtu.be/lwGVUjU-j8A I share many tips that a lot of people have found to be SUPER helpful. Have a great day! Jeff

Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin Build in the Forest for Free - Wood Floor, Wall & Frame Structure

25:08
The second instalment of the off-grid one man cabin build using free reclaimed pallet wood. Now that the pallets have been processed down and the wood floor and foundation is complete, it was time to focus on the main structure of the cabin. We carried the wood in by hand as we have no saw mill. This meant that we could put together the walls of the cabin in the woods using reclaimed nails where possible. We are going for a classic log cabin look to the structure, with an apex roof and a window. We had to put the frame together in pieces as the original pallets aren't large enough. Once we had each side built, we screwed them in place to create the cabin shape itself. We also used some Bushcraft Skills with the axe and knife to weave a wall from the log store to the cabin itself. Next time we hope to put up the roof of the shelter. Building an Off Grid Cabin for Free to Save Money - Woodstove & Pallet Wood Bed

33:02
The Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin is really developing now that the roof and Front Porch are done. Now it is ready to have the Woodstove put in to keep the Tiny House warm in the cold winter months. We also use more free recycled Pallet Wood to build a raised bed in the one-man Cabin. Using the stove we boil water for soup and cook up some food on the stove. Closing the door on the Cabin it got really warm and next time we hope to put a thermometer inside to track the temperature. There are still plenty of jobs to do though. We need to chink the walls, perhaps with a primitive style of moss and clay, although there isn't much of that around so we might use materials from our garage. We also need to fill in any holes in the roof, add a chair to the porch and a small chair and table in the Cabin. It is now ready for me do some overnighters in and I'm really looking forward to this. Thanks to all who have watched this Primitive Cabin build by father and son. It's been a great Wilderness Project so far and we have done it all for free to save money. An awesome DIY project! Scrap wood bee hives and a BEE Update!

06:27
Here is a quick update of my bee project where I caught 4 bee swarms this spring and relocated them into 4 DIY scrap wood top bar bee hives. The hives are a bit junky and I'm still very new to beekeeping but so far the bees seem like they are doing well and growing! I've made a LOT of mistakes as you'll see, but my main goal was to see if I could get into beekeeping on the cheap.. and I mean cheap! Currently, my only direct expense has been a smoker... I'm borrowing my suit from my wife uncle and the rest has been salvaged from supplies/materials I had on hand:) Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions... or tips! #swarmcapture #beekeeping #topbarhive #diybeekeeping #feralbees #homesteadonomics #beehive #scrapwoodhive Intro music is by my brother in law, Trey Harris and the background music is from Youtube's free music library (Over Time by Vibe Tracks).

Build It | How to Build a Chicken Coop

08:30
Watch the full episode: Check your local listings for air times beginning Feb. 18: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/info/0,,20613015,00.html Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva creates a backyard chicken coop for a homeowner in Connecticut in “Build It.” (See below for steps.) Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Steps for How to Build a Chicken Coop: 1. Stain the sheets of T1-11 and allow to dry. 2. Place two sheets of T1-11 on top of each other and ensure they’re even on all sides. Use a track saw to cut the roofline of the plywood at a 45-degree angle on both sheets at once. 3. Remove one sheet and then, using a jigsaw, cut a small square opening for the sliding coop door into a plywood sheet. For all the doors, the cutouts will later be reattached as the door. 4. On the next sheet, cut an opening for the small entrance door, using the jigsaw. 5. Cut a third sheet of T1-11 to form the side walls. On one of them, cut a large opening for the egg door, using a jigsaw. The other side wall will remain uncut. 6. Cut two of the 4x4 posts to the desired length, then match the angle of the roof using a miter saw for both steps. 7. Use a driver to drive in 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws to attach the posts to the plywood sheeting. 8. Use a piece of 2x4 at the bottom and the top of the coop to give it additional support. Attach these using ceramic screws, and fasten them using a driver. 9. Construct the opposite gable end, repeating the same steps. 10. Connect the two gable ends using 2x4s, and attach one of the side walls. 11. To form the rafters, screw in a 2x4 ridge beam and 2x4 purlins (parallel roof framing), using a driver and 3-inch ceramic screws. 12. Finish the framing by attaching additional 2x4s to the base of the front and back gable walls, using 3-inch ceramic screws. 13. Then, attach two more perpendicular 2x4 joists to form the floor support for the coop with 3-inch ceramic screws 14. To form the floor, use the ½-inch exterior plywood and cut out the corners to match the posts using a jigsaw. 15. Fasten the plywood floor by driving 1 5/8-inch screws into the floor joists. 16. Attach the cutout door pieces to the plywood exterior sheets of the structure using hardware of your choice. Do this by driving provided screws into the hardware. 17. Attach the chicken door by threading a rope through a pulley at the top of the door. Then attach the rope to an eyelet on the chicken door. The other end of the rope should be linked to a hook at the opposite end. A track for the door can be made using scrap wood. 18. Attach the final side wall using 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws. 19. Build a nesting box to your desired dimensions using plywood and 2x4s. 20. Cut cellular PVC trim boards to match the angles of the coop, using a miter saw. 21. Attach the PVC trim boards to the exterior of the coop using a hammer and stainless-steel trim nails. 22. Attach ½-inch plywood roof sheathing to the roof structure using a driver and 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws. 23. Lay down a layer of felt paper, and staple in place. 24. Using a hammer and roofing nails, attach the asphalt shingles with a 5-inch reveal to the roof sheathing. 25. Attach 4x4 posts of the coop to a beveled base using a driver and ceramic screws. 26. Attach the beveled base to a 2x12 square using a driver and ceramic screws to keep the coop from sinking into the ground. 27. Create a pen area using pressure-treated 2x4s to desired design. Connect the pen structure using driver and ceramic screws. Include an access door for cleaning the pen. 28. Cover the pen with chicken wire by hammering in construction staples. 29. Dig a trench in the outline of the pen at least 3 inches deep, and place the structure in the trench. This is meant to keep predators from crawling in underneath. 30. Attach the pen structure to the coop structure by driving in screws. 31. Place a piece of 2x12 from the coop door to the pen to serve as a ramp for the chickens. Building Without Nails The Genius of Japanese Carpentry

25:25
We've heard of the genius "technology" used in ancient times to build towering monuments with nothing more than primitive tools like stones and ropes. The Egyptian pyramids of old is a great example. Back in the far east, Japan had plenty to offer the ancient world as well when it came to resourceful inventions and crafts. Traditional Japanese Carpenters built houses, temples, and castles, without the use of nails, screws, or bolts. In a documentary interviewing one of the few remaining practitioners of this seemingly lost art of carpentry, an old Japanese master craftsman exclaims "No bolts, no nails. It lasts longer!". Proudly claiming its effectiveness that no one would be able to argue against its success in the form of several majestic towering temples all over Japan still standing to this day. After being subjected to harsh weather and clashes of changes in civilizations for well over a thousand years. But with the bold statement comes a clear understanding that the success to this art isn't because they designed it to withstand "against" nature, instead, it is all about being "with" nature. Moving his livelihood to New York and sharing his art form of old Japanese wood working to the world, Isao Hanafusa, co-owner of Miya Shoji, has carved himself a unique niche in the competitive market of the furnishing industry. Sought out and revered by New Yorkers wanting that embrace with nature in their interior decor with a style and durability in craftsmanship that can't be rivaled by most factory produced alternatives. All furniture selections in Miya Shoji showrooms are hand crafted, even the types lumber used in all his crafts are hand selected by Hanafusa himself. Isao Hanafusa was a graduate of Industrial Revolution studies of which he states has produced countless wonders for the modern world, but its cold machinery has also tragically killed off individual talent that is supposed to reside in craftsmen. To this day, he rejects criticisms of his methods being unnecessarily old fashioned, because with all the bold talk of technologically advanced tools and methods used in modern day construction work, the Hanafusa family believes a thousand years worth of talent refinement and mastery should not be thrown away in exchange for mass production convenience. Nor is it going to back down from the contest that their crafts will last even longer than rigid concrete and metal structures for the simple fact they are not designed to resist against the force of mother nature, but to live with her. Watch This Video Before Building a Wood Fence

04:48
http://www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/fences/index.html One of the biggest problems with a wood fence are the wood posts that start to decay, or get hit by a large colony of termites. One time I put a new fence post in, only to find out that my idea didn't work. Actually it was an idea that I read about in one of my favorite homebuilding magazines. The magazine article suggested that you paint the bottom of your wood post with a roofing tar and then install the wood post, to enjoying many years of a maintenance free fence. Instead of using a roofing tar, I painted the bottom of the wood post fence with an elastomeric paint in the wood post rotted within one year and needed to be replaced. I've tried putting gravel at the bottom of the fence posts, leaving the wood exposed at the bottom and quite a few different things and I'm here to report that I haven't came up with any improvements or tips that I could share with anyone that really worked good. Watch this video if you want to learn more about things I've done to wood posts that haven't worked well.

The Cowboy Cabin | Tiny Texas Houses

04:09
A rustic little cabin sits on a beautiful piece of southeast Texas acreage, looking like it has been there for over a century. While the weathered siding and rusty tin roof are decades old, the cabin as a whole is not. It was placed there only a few years ago after having been built 50 miles away in the workshop of Tiny Texas Houses. If you’re not familiar with Tiny Texas Houses, they design and build small cabins and cottages almost entirely from salvaged materials. They obtain the material by deconstructing old houses and barns. While things like wiring and water piping are new for safety reasons, the company says that over 95% of the materials are reclaimed. The Cowboy Cabin is one of their larger builds. At 12′ by 28′, it has a 336 ft2 (31.2 m2) footprint. The kitchen is roughly in the middle of the ground floor, and is open to the living room. It looks like the living room is a pretty comfortable size and if you were willing to have one less armchair, you could fit in a small dining set. This cabin, however, has a fold-down table attached to the back of the kitchen peninsula. There is also the option of dining on the screened porch attached to the back of the cabin. The bathroom is behind the kitchen and features a shower lined with repurposed roofing tiles. The vintage sink has old-school separate hot and cold faucets, which look nifty but might not be so pleasant to use. Next to the bathroom is a nook that seems to be serving as a dressing area, with a good-sized closet and a storage cabinet. The small cabin has a sleeping loft at both ends, with the one over the living room being slightly larger than the one over the bathroom. The two loft ladders were cleverly integrated into the living room and kitchen shelving. The railing for one loft was created from a pair of old doors turned on their sides. This is a fantastic idea and very practical as most exterior doors are around 36″ wide, just the height required for interior railings. Besides the cabin itself, the property also has a lakeside pavilion ready for outdoor cooking and dining. Several photos of the pavilion are included at the end of the photo gallery. The plans for the Cowboy Cabin are available for purchase. Please see Tiny Texas House’s online store for details. Best Door Sweep for Exterior Doors -- by Home Repair Tutor

07:17
http://www.homerepairtutor.com/best-door-sweep-for-exterior-doors/ What is the best door sweep for exterior doors? You might dispute me on this but I think it's U-Shaped. Hi there, this is Jeff from Home Repair Tutor and I think you should opt for U-Shaped door sweeps because they will prevent your doors from rusting or rotting from the bottom. Check out this video to see how easy it is to install a door sweep and in 30 minutes you might be able to lower your utility bills & stop rodent or pest invasions. And the door sweep I'm referring to only costs $9.47. Pretty sweet. Check out my video for all the details If you thought this video was helpful PLEASE Like it so that others will see it, too. http://youtu.be/nl11XrBAKZY For tips on home repair & improvement make sure you check out more Home Repair Tutor videos on YouTube. And if you'd like to know another great way to keep out hot or cold drafts check out this other video I made http://youtu.be/FBMJvC9TZ3A (how to add weather stripping to an entry door) I share several tips that will come in handy. Have a great day! Jeff P.S. Use this link to share this video with your friends on Facebook http://youtu.be/nl11XrBAKZY

Amish watering the garden

00:13
This was filmed as a joke version of our real-life cooling/watering yesterday. It was near 100 degrees so we filled a cattle trough with very cold water from our cistern. We took a "dip" to cool off, then watered the garden with the water.

2013 Garden: Straw Bales, Reclaimed Cabinets, and Water Trough Plantars Video 1 May 13th

05:26
http://jenspringer.com Creative gardening is the theme for our 2013 garden! Straw bales, water troughs, old cabinets, throw away iron gates as a squash trellis, recycle bin, and even an old kitty litter box as planters. We love vegetables so we decided this 2013 growing season to go all out and plant "out of the box". Ha ha! For veggies we have: 4 varieties of peppers (bell, jalapeno, wax, serrano), all kinds of heritige tomatoes, pumpkins, pan squash, zucchini, brussel sprouts, carrots, radishes, beets, rutabaga, and lettuce. For herbs we have: stevia, sage, oregano, cilantro, parsley, and rosemary. Oooh, we gotta get those basil seeds planted ASAP!
