Frequent Ejaculation May Protect Against Prostate Cancer
Good news men – in case you didn’t know already know, orgasms not only feel fantastic but are also linked to a decreased risk of prostate cancer. It appears that men who ejaculate a lot over the course of a month are less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. This finding was first uncovered back in 2004 when researchers at the National Cancer Institute examined the association between ejaculation frequency – which includes sexual intercourse, nocturnal emission, and masturbation – and the risk of prostate cancer. The study first appearing in the Journal of the American Medical Association, tracked over 29,000 men in the U.S. aged 46 to 81 years using data from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study from 1992 to 2000. All men were cancer free when the study began. Each man filled out questionnaires every 2 years over the course of the study with the participants reporting on the average number of ejaculations they had each month during the ages of 20 to 29 years, 40 to 49 years, and during the past year. The results showed men who ejaculated 21 or more times a month had a 33% lower risk of prostate cancer compared with men who reported four to seven ejaculations a month throughout their lifetimes. An Australian study of 2,338 men had the same results in that men who averaged four to seven ejaculations a week were 36% less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 70 than men who ejaculated less than 2.3 times a week on average. But another study found that men who had sex with 30 or more women were two to three times more likely to develop prostate cancer than men with only one partner. This is considered good news for all men even though there was no agreement as to what accounted for the protection. One reason given was that the prostate accumulates carcinogens or other harmful substances which are eliminated during ejaculation. Men need to remember that sexual activity can have some negative consequences, such as acquiring a sexually transmitted infection. High levels of male sex hormones, or androgens, may increase a man's risk of prostate cancer. But different studies of this question, done in different ways, have reached different conclusions. To look at the question in a new way, a team of researchers at England's University of Nottingham looked at whether men with more intense sex drives were at higher risk of prostate cancer. Polyxeni Dimitropoulou, PhD; Rosalind Eeles, PhD, FRCP; and Kenneth R. Muir, PhD, obtained detailed sexual histories from 840 men. About half the men got prostate cancer by age 60, and about half did not have cancer. The findings were surprising. Sexual intercourse did not affect prostate cancer risk. But frequent masturbation did -- in different ways, at different times of life. "Frequent masturbation during men's 20s and 30s increased their risk of prostate cancer," Dimitropoulou tells WebMD. "But men in their 50s who masturbated frequently had decreased risk." Of course, masturbation frequency is relative. For men in their 20s, "frequent masturbation" was two to seven times per week. Compared to same-age men who reported masturbating less than once per month, 20-something frequent masturbators had a 79% higher risk of prostate cancer by age 60. For men in their 50s, "frequent masturbation" was one or more times per week. Compared to same-age men who reported never masturbating, 50-something frequent masturbators had a 70% lower risk of prostate cancer. What's going on? The study wasn't designed to answer that question. But Dimitropoulou and colleagues have some theories. They suggest that young men genetically predisposed to have hormone-sensitive prostate cancer will be at higher risk if their bodies naturally produce high levels of male hormones -- the same hormones that give them an intense sex drive. So it's not masturbation itself that's increasing prostate cancer risk in young men. More masturbation may just mean more sex drive -- and more androgens bathing prostate tissues. That's not the case for older men. Dimitropoulou suggests that in older men, masturbation itself may actually be helpful, ridding the prostate gland of fluids that may contain cancer-causing substances. "In mature age, it may be more important that toxins get flushed out of the system," she says. "And because the masturbation frequency was not as high in the men's 50s as it was in their 20s, even low levels of masturbation in the 50s has a protective effect." These are just theories, Dimitropoulou warns. More research is needed to determine the exact role of sex hormones and sexual activity in prostate-cancer risk at different stages of life. Meanwhile, Dimitropoulou, now at England's University of Cambridge, advises moderation for both younger and older men. "It is kind of logical that a moderate level of masturbatory activity has to be maintained," she says. "Not too much, and not none at all." There’s at least one preventative step men can take—and they won’t even have to leave their bedrooms. Attention men everywhere: You now have a great excuse to get it on in the bedroom. After all, it’s all in the name of science (and your health!) That’s right! According to several studies, ejaculating frequently—during sex, masturbation, or while sleeping—can reduce men’s risk of prostate cancer. A 2016 study got a bit more specific on what the researchers mean by “frequently.” After surveying 32,000 men from 1992 to 2010, the study found that participants who reported ejaculating at least 21 times per month during their 20s were 19 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer than those who ejaculated seven times per month or less. If you’re in your 40s, there’s even better news: frequent ejaculation reduces your prostate cancer risk by 22 percent. “While our findings should be confirmed in studies that evaluate the potential biological mechanisms underlying the observed associations, the results of our study suggest that ejaculation and safe sexual activity throughout adulthood could be a beneficial strategy for reducing the risk of prostate cancer,” Jennifer Rider, lead author of the study, said in a press release. This study wasn’t the first to make the connection, though. An Australian study of 2,338 men found that men who averaged 4.6 to seven ejaculations a week were 36 percent less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 70 than men who ejaculated less than 2.3 times a week, on average. Still, ATTN says, “there’s no magic number of times a person should ejaculate to reduce their risk. What the study findings suggest is a dose-dependent relationship, where the risk becomes lower the more frequently a person ejaculates.” Although the relationship between ejaculation and risk of prostate cancer has been more or less confirmed, researchers still don’t know why the two are linked. Rider has one theory about the connection. Here’s what she told Reuters: “Ejaculation frequency is, to some extent, a measure of overall health status in that men at the very low end of ejaculation—zero to three times per month—were more likely to have other [medical problems] and die prematurely from causes other than prostate cancer.” There you go! This is one of the most commonly asked questions and one of the reasons why many people rationalize that jacking off is healthy for them. Don’t stop masturbating and watching weirder and weirder genres of porn… It’s healthy and everybody does it. Plus, you’re preventing cancer.” Regardless of what you have found, I've looked into this pretty deeply because I obviously do not want to increase my chances of cancer by participating in NoFap, and have found the definitive answer to this question. Before we get into this answer and the reasons behind it, be sure to smash that subscribe button like you're smashing your crush, and let me know what videos you want to see in the future! OK. After a ton of research, I have concluded that no, stopping masturbation will not give you cancer. And here are 5 reasons which are proven through logic and research which is why I personally continue on NoFap forever. The main reason is that if you want to believe in some conflicting studies that say frequent ejaculation will help, first off, sex is not off limits, so with NoFap you can still find a girl or guy (and it's more likely that you will on NoFap than when you're addicted because you have to go find someone to have real sex with) or even if you're a man and not getting any release during the day, wet dreams still allow your body to get rid of excess semen in your body. This is the most natural option anyways, if your body does not want it anymore, it will get rid of it, so it's not like you will never be able to cum and your prostate becomes a rock. Sex and wet dreams allow you to naturally get rid of it without porn and masturbation. The second reason is that there have been other studies (as I said before many studies do conflict with each other) noting that the argument that frequent ejaculation helps with preventing prostate cancer is only for men over 50 years old. And for men under that age, frequent ejaculation actually increases the likelihood of cancer. That's the thing with trusting studies, there's almost always evidence against either theory, so the most important thing is to collect all the data and see for yourself. Obviously I'm not a doctor, but after reading up on this subject, there's a reason why I advocate for NoFap and the benefits that it brings to you. The third reason is that there are always some minor benefits to destructive habits. If you were looking up if you should smoke, one of the "benefits" of smoking is that it reduces the risk of Parkinson's disease. If we follow the same logic we do with how some people rationalize porn usage, then we should all smoke because well, it reduces the risk of Parkinson's, so it's all good. Obviously we've been educated on how smoking causes damage to the body, and I'm sure that masturbation is less harmful than putting toxins in your body, but I'm just pointing out a logical flaw in the argument that because there is a small benefit to something (which may or may not be true depending on the studies you look at), you should do it. High levels of male sex hormones, or androgens, may increase a man's risk of prostate cancer. But different studies of this question, done in different ways, have reached different conclusions. To look at the question in a new way, a team of researchers at England's University of Nottingham looked at whether men with more intense sex drives were at higher risk of prostate cancer. Polyxeni Dimitropoulou, PhD; Rosalind Eeles, PhD, FRCP; and Kenneth R. Muir, PhD, obtained detailed sexual histories from 840 men. About half the men got prostate cancer by age 60, and about half did not have cancer. The findings were surprising. Sexual intercourse did not affect prostate cancer risk. But frequent masturbation did -- in different ways, at different times of life. "Frequent masturbation during men's 20s and 30s increased their risk of prostate cancer," Dimitropoulou tells WebMD. "But men in their 50s who masturbated frequently had decreased risk." Of course, masturbation frequency is relative. For men in their 20s, "frequent masturbation" was two to seven times per week. Compared to same-age men who reported masturbating less than once per month, 20-something frequent masturbators had a 79% higher risk of prostate cancer by age 60. For men in their 50s, "frequent masturbation" was one or more times per week. Compared to same-age men who reported never masturbating, 50-something frequent masturbators had a 70% lower risk of prostate cancer. What's going on? The study wasn't designed to answer that question. But Dimitropoulou and colleagues have some theories. They suggest that young men genetically predisposed to have hormone-sensitive prostate cancer will be at higher risk if their bodies naturally produce high levels of male hormones -- the same hormones that give them an intense sex drive. So it's not masturbation itself that's increasing prostate cancer risk in young men. More masturbation may just mean more sex drive -- and more androgens bathing prostate tissues. That's not the case for older men. Dimitropoulou suggests that in older men, masturbation itself may actually be helpful, ridding the prostate gland of fluids that may contain cancer-causing substances. "In mature age, it may be more important that toxins get flushed out of the system," she says. "And because the masturbation frequency was not as high in the men's 50s as it was in their 20s, even low levels of masturbation in the 50s has a protective effect." These are just theories, Dimitropoulou warns. More research is needed to determine the exact role of sex hormones and sexual activity in prostate-cancer risk at different stages of life. Meanwhile, Dimitropoulou, now at England's University of Cambridge, advises moderation for both younger and older men. Men who report a higher frequency of ejaculating as adults are less likely to be subsequently diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa), a new study led by a School of Public Health researcher confirms.
