Poets themselves have struggled with this question, often using metaphors to approximate a definition. Is a poem a little machine? A firework? An echo? A dream? Melissa Kovacs shares three recognizable characteristics of most poetry. Lesson by Melissa Kovacs, animation by Ace & Son Moving Picture Co., LLC.

High School Lessons | Spoken Word Poetry

02:22
This is a poem I've been rewriting over and over since my creative writing class sophomore year. I'm happy to finally be able to share it! words // High School Lessons by Chloe Roberts Beyond the binds of textbooks, You learn from the days that seem to strap you tightly into a carousel. Spinning circles of anxiety around a headache, you’re stuck in the pattern of pretending fun feels like dizziness. And when you realize running from responsibilities or yourself only increases the speed, remember how temporary this moment is. You will fall someday, like autumn leaves, and regrow even stronger. Look for those lessons in bonfires under starry nights and red solo cups filled with Sprite and Cola, although your endless laughter would make anyone question otherwise. And when you realize that friends and dark nights make you feel on top of the world, make sure to tell them that their closeness creates a flame in your life that puts shame to the feeble fire pit that you all created. Find lessons in dimly lit classrooms during the hours of coffee and tea. Watch the sleepy sun rise to the soft murmurs of the school band practicing. And when you realize there’s a simplistic tranquility in something like that stop and breathe deeply there. Everyone deserves a break. It hurts but you’ll learn from your aching chest, with a heart that will shatter. Loss will find you, and grieving will take home behind your sleepless eyes. You’ll find that life will provide you with more questions than answers. And when you realize memories are all we have remember the one taken from you; and carry on their kindness when their memory carries heavy on you. I learned lessons. I did. Not from equations, or history books. But from when my heart was beating, or breaking, for a reason. - Instagram: @chloerobs_ Twitter: @chloeerobs ♡ Chloe

The only way you will ever need to teach theme

07:00
More on my blog: http://guidingontheside.blogspot.com/ Broken down into the cognitive steps, students can determine theme with the support of modeling and collaboration. This video shows the strategy for introducing the concept (even though kids in 8th grade were exposed WHAT theme is in prior years, I never assume they were taught HOW to figure it out). After doing this strategy with passing the paper and creating multiple themes, it is simply a matter of reminding students throughout the school year that in order to determine theme you just need to follow these basic steps.

ELA - Introductory Poetry Lesson - December 1, 2015

19:31
This is the first day of a poetry unit for ELA. Direct teaching section is longer than it would typically be for a mini-lesson, in order to set the stage for the unit. The essential questions/objectives for the lesson are on the board, but, because of the angle of the camera, are not visible in the video. They are: "How do we read poetry?" and "What can we 'jot' about in poetry?" These questions helped to set the stage for the approach to reading and writing about poetry, as it is very different than our approach to fiction and non-fiction.

Online Lesson Plans

01:03
Teachers know that a well-paced lesson plan is the backbone of an engaging and successful classroom. English and Language Arts teachers will find creative and thought-provoking lesson plans, worksheets, literature lesson plans, PowerPoints and much more that will hook their middle and high school students into becoming life-long learners. All lesson plans for teachers are based on: clear communication, research and structure, and on providing teachers and students with activities that are motivational, interactive and substantial. The comprehensive Language Arts and English Literature unit plans are based on the Common Core principles and the Backwards Design concept, with the goals and objectives set from the first moment of lesson planning. After that, I chose the activities, assignments, projects and assessments to meet those objectives. Student Teaching October 2012

15:29
Student teaching: Regular education 6th grade language arts poetry lesson. This video shows 15 minutes of a 40 minute lesson. I greatly appreciate the middle school student who filmed the lesson for me, but I would like to point out that it was a student and that is why the quality is what it is. Also, the lights were dimmed during the first portion of the class, which makes it difficult to see on video. The lesson structure was teacher lead-in Halloween poem, class reading sample 4-line poems together discussing their visual imagery and structure, brainstorming adjectives/nouns/adverbs/verbs on a graphic organizer, writing poems on a rough draft copy and final copy if time permitted, and reading the poem aloud in 4-student tables. We were stopped 5 minutes early by school announcements, but closed the lesson after the announcements. Students shared their final copy during class the next day. Unfortunately, I was not there to see it, but their teacher is sending me copies to see. This was a fun class for both teacher and students. It was my first time teaching a class, and being filmed has taught me a lot about my class presentation and engagement skills, and how I can improve my lessons.
