Although they’re identified with a specific gender, both hormones are found in women and men. Women have more estrogen and men have more testosterone It's also the hormone that can be the most troublesome in the fat department At normal levels, estrogen actually helps keep you lean by increasing the production of insulin, a hormone that manages blood sugar. When estrogen gets thrown off, though, it turns you into a weight-gain machine. Xenoestrogens are fat-soluble and non-biodegradable in nature. Unfortunately, accumulating estrogen is not hard. We are constantly exposed to estrogen-like compounds since the major sources of these Xenoestrogens are pesticides, detergents, petroleum products, plastic products, cosmetics, etc. (1) Fat Gain The "thickening" of women's bodies and the "softening" of men's bodies are often related to excess estrogen. When in excess, estrogen promotes the growth of estrogen sensitive tissues, leading to an increased size of adipose (fat) tissues in the waist, belly and other estrogen sensitive fat tissues In men, fat accumulation is typically in the belly and chest; for women, in the belly, lower butt, upper thighs and sometimes in the back of the arms. In some cases, excess estrogen causes feminization of men's bodies with conditions such as genecomastia. Estrogen sensitive fat tissues are also called "stubborn fat" due to their high resistance to fat burning. Generally, not even diet or exercise can help remove this estrogen sensitive tenacious fat. Excess estrogen works in a vicious cycle. Estrogen promotes fat gain, and the enlarged fat tissue produces more estrogen within its cells, which then promotes more fat gain, and so on. Cortisol Back in the bad old hunter-gatherer days, the human species got a lot of use out of the hormone cortisol. That's the stress hormone activated during the fight-or-flight response, causing our blood pressure to rise and heart rate to increase. But in the modern world, there's little need to either fight or flee. Yet the cortisol release remains functional in the species, only now it's activated in response to the stressors of modern society (e.g., bad traffic, malfunctioning machinery, domestic discord) rather than natural perils or challenges to survival. Fat Gain Repeated elevation of cortisol can lead to weight gain in 3 ways: 1) One way is via visceral fat storage. Cortisol can mobilize triglycerides from storage and relocate them to visceral fat cells (those under the muscle, deep in the abdomen). Cortisol also aids adipocytes’ development into mature fat cells. The biochemical process at the cellular level has to do with enzyme control (11-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase), which converts cortisone to cortisol in adipose tissue. Solutions Vitamin C Vitamin C is probably the best and most cost-effective supplement that you can take to balance high cortisol levels naturally. Multiple studies have found out that vitamin C supplementation after exercise rapidly clears cortisol and that when vitamin C is administered before a stressful situation it blunts the stress induced rise in cortisol. I want to talk about some of the hormones that are responsible for tissue growth, responsible for muscle growth, but I also want to address some of the pressure that you might be feeling from the industry and sometimes even from your doctor when it comes down to human growth hormone or IGF. Human growth hormone and IGF are two very, very similar hormones within the body, and what I mean by that is they do very similar things, but, at the same time, they're also very, very different. What happens is your pituitary gland creates something called human growth hormone. This human growth hormone circulates throughout the course of the body and eventually hits the liver. When it hits the liver, it triggers the release of something known as IGF, insulin-like growth factor-1. The first misnomer that we have to address when we're looking at human growth hormone and we're looking at muscle growth, in general, is that human growth hormone doesn't directly allow muscles to grow. Human growth hormone indirectly activates IGF, which, therefore, allows muscles to grow through a couple of different pathways. You see, not only do we create insulin-like growth factor in the liver, but we also create it at different localized areas throughout the body, in the skeletal muscle and in the bone. That's exactly why, hormonally, your body starts to build muscle when you train a specific area. When we look at things like this, it would be easy to assume that if we utilized human growth hormone, we'd be able to produce more muscle, but let's understand how this works a little bit more. You see, human growth hormone is usually secreted through periods of growth, naturally, whenever your body biologically feels that it needs to grow. Adolescence is a perfect example. You're going to be secreting human growth hormone in a pulsatile fashion, and you're usually secreting it throughout the evening time or within the night time when you're asleep, but you're also going to secrete it when you're consuming copious amounts of protein at one sitting, simply because of the amino acid arginine, but you're also going to stimulate it through intense exercise. First off, we have to understand when the body is producing it, and that helps us understand when you would actually need it. Believe it or not, it's being discovered in a lot of studies, that unless you're deficient in human growth hormone, you're not going to get much benefit out of adding it into your body. We're going to address the human growth hormone side of things a little bit more when we look at some of the studies later in this video, but, first, let's talk about what IGF is and how this process works. You see, most of the anabolic responses that we're getting from human growth hormone, again, aren't a result of human growth hormone. They're a result of IGF. Let's talk about IGF. You see, IGF stands again for insulin-like growth factor, and what that means is it's very, very structurally similar to insulin. If you've watched my other videos, you know that insulin is the absorptive hormone. It's the hormone that turns your body into absorptive mode, meaning it's easier to store carbohydrates and it's easier to store fat and, ultimately, even easier to store a little bit of muscle, too. In this video, I walk you through the 5 principles to building muscle over 50 and keeping your body strong as you age. Use these principles along with our free resources to get started today! *Use Compound Exercises (1:25) The 5 key exercises to include in the best workouts for men over 50 are Squats, Deadlifts, Rows, Bench Press, and Military press. You may have done these exercise before, but here at the FFP, we show you how to tweak them to keep them safe for aging bodies. It’s important as you get older to do exercises in a way that is safe for your muscles and joints. Incorporating these exercises into workouts for men over 50 can be done in a couple of ways. Firstly, you could do a full body workout that has you completing all 5 exercises 2-3 times per week, just like we show you in our free video (https://fitfatherproject.com/get-free-muscle-workout). You could also do them as an upper/lower body split, where you would do Bench Press, Rows and Military Press on one day and Squats and Deadlifts another day. This is because your metabolism lowers as you age and any excess in calories is more likely to be stored as body-fat. You need to prioritize a lean bulking nutrition plan and fuelling your body for building muscle. What I mean by lean bulking is to have the optimum number of calories above your TDEE (Total daily energy expenditure) to aid with building muscle. This should only be between 250 - 500 calories over, so as not to cause fat gain. They are used as a way to optimize the 2 principles above, exercise and nutrition. If you are not following those 2 principles, any amount of supplements will not lead to the gains you want. My recommendations are: Creatine - Increases strength and your ability to push more weight. Also helps preserve muscle, especially in aging guys. 5g to be taken daily. Protein powder - Supports your protein intake and can be taken as Whey, Whey/Casein Blend or a plant-based blend. Should be taken post-workout. Vitamin D3 - Increases testosterone and keeps your immune system strong. Multivitamin - Ensures you're getting optimal levels of vitamins and minerals. Fish Oil - Helps with joint care and brain health. Turmeric/Curcumin - Reduces inflammation, especially in joints. *Get Enough Rest & Recovery (9:42) A little R & R is always good for you, right? When it comes to building muscle over 50, it’s incredibly good for you. You need to aim to improve your sleep and get an absolute minimum of 7 - 7.5 hours of undisturbed sleep each night. Today I’m here to go through one of the most highly-discussed topics in fitness: protein powder. News flash guy...protein powders are NOT important just because of their protein content. Anytime we consume protein, it causes a spike our insulin levels - this is called being insulinogenic. This reaction opens up our cells to be more receptive to the nutrients from the protein you are taking in...Let’s breakdown the best forms of protein powder to continue building lean muscle and getting you closer to your six pack abs. My most favorite type of protein powder hands-down is grass-fed whey protein isolate. When you notice the words “protein isolate” on the label, that means the protein has been separated from all the unnecessary junk in the whey so the protein that is being absorbed is much more pure. Any “grass-fed” protein means the whey is being derived from naturally-sourced, non-grain fed cattle that will pass down the good nutrients from their diet into the protein you will be taking in. Second to grass-fed whey protein isolate is pea protein. Pea protein is good for your digestive system and is something a bit different so that you can change up your protein intake so your body doesn’t get too accustomed to the same sources of nutrients. The third best form of protein powder isn’t even powder...It’s meat. You can't out-supplement protein from whole foods in your diet. It can get very complicated. Plus, once you start, you can’t stop because taking testosterone will SHUT down your own production and thus, why your testicles shrink and sometimes just disappear into little raisins. Anyway, the point is that with more “growth” (muscle, strength, lower body fat), ALSO comes more side-effects. Especially if you’re over the age of 35. The older we get, the more sensitive we become to side-effects. Each group is discussed in relation to one of four age brackets regarding their appropriateness. All of the supplements discussed are ones that I take myself and would recommend to others. You will not see any testosterone boosters or pro hormones because I don’t believe in them or recommend them to my viewers. Even the pre workout supplements must undergo severe scrutiny based on the dangers that have been shown to riddle that product category for the past couple of years. All that said however, I make it very clear that any supplementation plan must start with a commitment to good nutrition. If you think that you are going to make up for a bad diet by taking supplements you are flat out fooling yourself, and likely wasting a lot of money.
