Essure is a product sold by Bayer, makes more contraceptive pills, patches, and implants than any other company in the world.
The Essure implant was first approved by the FDA in 2002. Since then, the FDA has received over 10,000 reports of serious complications caused by Essure, including allergic reactions, ectopic pregnancies, perforations, migration, and the need for removal surgery.
Every month, the FDA receives over 500 reports on Essure. As part of the FDA’s approval, the companies behind Essure were supposed to complete a study on its side effects by 2007. They didn’t finish the study until April 2015, eight years too late. Because the FDA let Bayer drag its feet, it was not until in November 2016 that the FDA finally added a real warning to Essure.
This new black box warning points out that "some patients" have suffered "perforation of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, and suspected allergic or hypersensitivity reactions." A little warning might be better than no warning, but that language doesn't get to the real problem.
The real problem is that Essure is poorly designed. The Essure works by irritating the fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes are only about 1 centimeter in diameter and they are made of some of the softest tissue in the body. That tissue is also particularly sensitive to the metal irritants used in Essure. Thus, the types of injuries we're seeing with Essure are inevitable.
