Blood Types: ABO and Rh (with donuts and sprinkles!)
All about blood types - ABO and Rh blood groups. Who donates to whom? How are blood types inherited? What are the medical issues involved with transfusions? Alleles in the ABO System i = base (plain donut) IA = encodes A antigens IB = encodes B antigens Allele Combinations ii IAIA or IAi IBIB or IBi IAIB Antigens and Antibodies The antigens you have on your blood cells are recognized by your immune system as SELF antigens If foreign antigens are discovered in your body, antibodies (or immunoglobulins) will be made by B cells of the immune system Antibody Structure Antigen + Antibody = agglutination reaction Agglutination = the clumping of particles Latin: agglutinare meaning 'to glue' Mixing of all blood groups and the result KEY: CANNOT transfuse if foreign antigens are introduced!!! The Rh Antigen Inherited in Mendelian fashion! Medical issue: Rh- mother and Rh+ fetus Good News... Rho(D) Globulin Treatment ("RhoGAM")

Know more about Blood Groups. NEET Zoology XII Human Health and Diseases
Know more about Blood Groups. NEET Zoology XII Human Health and Diseases Blood Groups: There are 30 or so known antigens on the surface of blood cells that give rise to different blood groups. In a transfusion, certain blood groups, e.g., ABO blood group, the recipient and donor must be matched, otherwise the recipient’s immune system will produce antibodies causing agglutination of the transfused cells and blocking circulation through capillaries. ABO blood groups are determined by the gene I (for isoagglutinin). There are three alleles, IA, IB and IO of this gene. Proteins produced by the IA and IB alleles are known as A and B antigens, respectively. Individuals with blood group A have ‘A’ antigen on the surface of their red blood cells (RBCs) and antibodies to antigen B in their plasma. People with blood group B have ‘B’ antigen on their RBCs and antibodies against ‘A’ antigen in their plasma. Individuals with AB blood group have both antigens A and B on their RBCs and no antibodies for either of the antigens in their plasma. Type O individuals lack A and B antigens on their RBCs, but have antibodies for both these antigens in their plasma. People with blood group AB can receive blood of A, B or O group, while those with blood group O can donate blood to anyone. This is the most important blood group in transfusion. If a transfusion is made between an incompatible donor and recipient, reaction of antigens on the cells and antibodies in the plasma will produce clots that will clog capillaries. The Rh (Rhesus) blood group is due to a cell surface antigen which was first discovered in rhesus monkey. Persons having this antigen are called Rh positive (Rh+), whereas Rh negative individuals lack this antigen. Rh antigen induces a strong immunogenic response when introduced into Rh- individuals. Rh blood group is important in blood transfusion and is involved in haemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN). When an individual bears an foetus, the RBCs from the foetus may enter the mother’s circulatory system during child birth, causing her to produce anti-Rh antibodies. As a result subsequent foetuses will be exposed to the anti-bodies produced by the mother, which results in HDN. In order to prevent HDN, Rh- mothers are injected with a defective anti-Rh-antibody during all pregnancies carrying Rh+ foetus. Each specific B-lymphocyte may have 100,000 copies of its specific antibody on its surface to bind with an antigen. The Sports Guide: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Plan
National Institutes of Health National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute The Sports Guide: NHLBI Planning Guide for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Projects at Sporting Events. AVA21235VNB1 The most recent national surveys of public awareness and knowledge of treatment and control of cardiovascular disease (CVD) show that health initiatives targeting specific populations are effective ways to support health promotion and disease prevention. Projects and activities outlined in this guide are directed to spectators at sporting events, especially young adults and middle-aged persons, to persons with cardiovascular risk factors, and to minorities. The publication is designed to encourage health awareness and disease prevention by promoting the knowledge that CVD may be prevented and can be treated. The guide describes how to design a project to fit the community and the target audience, how to fund the project, working with the sports community, organizing and training volunteers, marketing the event, referrals and follow-up activities, and spillover events. Themes for different types of sporting events are suggested, such as "Slam Dunk Stroke" (basketball), "TouchDOWN on Fat" (football), "Net a Healthy Heart" (tennis), "Run for Life" (track), along with suggestions for gathering data to be used in evaluating the program. Projects carried out in Atlanta, Baltimore, Hawaii, South Carolina, and New Orleans are described. Four appendixes, which comprise more than half the guide, include: planning and implementation form, data form and recording chart for screening booth, screening evaluation sheet, and media contact and coverage forms; sample publicity materials such as a press release and public service announcement (PSA) radio and video scripts; camera ready art; and resource materials that can be duplicated and distributed as part of health promotion projects. 血液型性格分類 研究 Blood Type vs. Personality Experiment
In Japan and Korea many people believe that blood type determines personality. After doing an analysis of variance on 1500 mixi profiles, I got a representative sample of the population (excluding age) and found no difference at all between blood type and number of friends. These ideas were mostly created from scientific racism in 1920s/30s Japan and Germany (See Wikipedia link below). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is a good spoken debunk. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS5Ic3dCH8U Wikipedia also has a good page about blood types in Japan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_types_in_Japanese_culture And in Korea http://www.korea4expats.com/article-blood-types.html A Japanese guy complaining about it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9ctn9LgluU&feature=related ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Over the years this issue has slowly been creeping into the west, e.g. Weight loss diets targeted to individual blood types.

But what do the dialects spoken in dozens of countries around the world have in common with each other, or with the writings of Chaucer? Claire Bowern traces the language from the present day back to its ancient roots, showing how English has evolved through generations of speakers. Lesson by Claire Bowern, animation by Patrick Smith.

Your heart gets a lot of attention from poets, songwriters, and storytellers, but today Hank's gonna tell you how it really works. The heart’s ventricles, atria, and valves create a pump that maintains both high and low pressure to circulate blood from the heart to the body through your arteries, and bring it back to the heart through your veins. The Progressive Income Tax: A Tale of Three Brothers
"The Progressive Income Tax" is one of those economic terms that gets bandied about, but few actually know what it means or how it works. This tale of three similar brothers with three different incomes (but one shared expense) helps explain the tax system under which we live. Adapted from an article by noted investor and economist, Kip Hagopian, and narrated by actress Carolyn Hennesy of "General Hospital" and "True Blood" fame, this animated story will change the way you think about how you pay your taxes.  Donate today to PragerU! http://l.prageru.com/2ylo1Yt Joining PragerU is free! They were raised in the same home, with the same parents, had the same IQ, same skills and same opportunities. Each was married and had two children. They were all carpenters making $25 per hour. While they were very similar in all these respects, they had different priorities. For example, Tom, chose to work 20 hours per week, while his brother, Dick worked 40 hours and Harry 60. It should also be noted that Harry's wife worked full time as an office manager for a salary of $50,000. Dick's wife sold real estate part time 10 hours a week and made $25,000 per year. Tom's wife did not work. Tom and Dick spent all of their family income. Since they paid into Social Security they figured, they didn't need to save for retirement. Harry and his wife, on the other hand, had, over many years, put away money each month and invested it in stocks and bonds. Here's how it worked out: Tom made $25,000 a year, Dick and his wife made $75,000 and Harry and his wife, $150,000. When a new housing development opened up in their community, the brothers decided to buy equally-priced homes on the same private street. One day the brothers decided to pool their funds for the purpose of improving their street. Concerned about crime and safety, and wanting a more attractive setting for their homes, the three families decided to install a security gate at the street's entrance; repave the street's surface; and enhance the lighting and landscaping. The work was done for a total cost of $30,000. Harry assumed they would divide the bill three ways, each brother paying $10,000. But Tom and Dick objected. "Why should we pay the same as you?" they said. "You make much more money than we do." Harry was puzzled. "What does that have to do with anything?" he asked. "My family makes more money because my wife and I work long hours, and because we have saved some of the money we've earned to make additional money from investments. Why should we be penalized for that?" "Harry, you can work and save all you like" Tom countered. "But my wife and I want to enjoy ourselves now, not 25 years from now." "Fine, Tom. Do what you want. It's a free country. But why should I have to pay for that? "I can't believe your being so... unbrotherly," Tom argued. "You have a lot of money and I don't. I thought you'd be more generous." At this point, Dick, the peacemaker in the family, entered the conversation. "I've got an idea," Dick said. "Our combined income is $250,000, and $30,000 is 12 percent of that amount. Why don't we each pay that percentage of our income? Under that formula, Tom would pay $3,000, I would pay $9,000, and Harry would pay $18,000." "I have a much better idea," said Tom. "And one that's fairer than what you're proposing." For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/progressive-income-tax-tale-three-brothers

Blood Sugar Test with Fred & Lynda Part 2: omelet (vs burger & chips)
In this second blood sugar test with Fred and Lynda Lindstrom, Dennis, Fred, and Lynda eat a large omelet stuffed with various meats. After waiting one hour they get the results. Dennis then contrasts this meal with the meal used for the previous test - a large hamburger with Fritos corn chips. The contrast was great, and the lesson learned is powerful! From these tests we learn that type 2 diabetes can normally "beat diabetes" by a careful control over what goes into their mouths, and what does not!
